several days. crowds gathered for the the teen's life. wsls ten's duke carter has the story. nats of people cheering fans from both blacksburg and christiansburg filled the gym at chirstiansburg high school. nats full it's part of the annual battle girls basketball . different. it's to honor of 13 year old nicole lovell whose body was found a week ago. "shocked, i heard about it, because one of my old teachers posted about it on facebook," hank skutt is the captain of the boy's basketball team at blacksburg. skutt took part in creating warmup t-shirts with nicole's favorite animal -- the panda. hank skutt/captain blacksburg basket ball team "we decided to design them after we heard about her passing last week and we decided that this would be a good a great occasion to wear them," even the girls basketball team wore them.

christiansburg girls basketball team " the christiansburg high school chapter of help save the next girl also attended the event. they handed pins, and fliers to raise awareness about the dangers of social media and wore blue ribbons, nicole's favorite color to remember her. jasmine linkous/christia nsburg high school hstng chapter "we just hope they help spread the word and like promote safety, its not only about girls but everybody needs safety," safety to prevent another tragic incident like nicole. the 13 year old. to the public. organizers say their will be a limited number of candles...so they own. in news around virginia this rescue crews pull a suspect from hampton creek following a police chase. hampton police say the chase began just after 9-saturday morning when officers responded to a report of a car crash. by the time police arrived to the scene, the driver of one vehicle allegedly already left the scene. police then found the suspect near a home ... that's when the man ran and jumped into the creek. the suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for non- life threatening injuries. the owner of a virginia beach bakery and her husband are facing charges after being accused of money laundering and selling cocaine. according to city officials, 31-year old johnson is the owner of "g's cake shop."

husband -- vernon norvell were both charged last month. however, the bakery remains open and is only accepting cash payments at this time. court documents show the government is seeking forfeiture of the couple's home along with business. almost 500 local soldiers in the virginia national guard are preparing for a year long deployment in the middle east. the lynchburg based national guard, made up of men and women from across the area will deploy to qatar in may. they will provide security detail and will relieve another winchester based national guard unit who will return home from their year long deployment. specialist douglas harris / army national guard "it's a good feeling. i know that i am actually doing something, being a part of something that is bigger than myself is a great, great feeling." in march - the 116-th regiment will travel to fort pickett for training. they will complete their training at fort bliss texas. more than two dozen veterans and active duty military members are enjoying a weekend on the

possible by tuesday afternoon. a clipper system is inbound as we top story this morning ... police in phoenix arizona are searching for a woman and a one year old child following a fatal shooting. authorities believe the two could be in danger. the woman has been identified as veronica huerta brown. and the child has been identified as king richard paz. police believe the victim, brown and child were in the care together when a suspect approached them --- grabbing the child and fleeing. authorities say they are investigating the relationship between the suspect and those involved. the shooting victim is a 20-year old male. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a suspect is dead and police officer is in stable condition following a shooting in ohio. a hardin county sheriff says

newfer is recovering after being shot twice by a suspect. investigators say police were called to the scene just before five saturday afternoon for a domestic dispute. upon arrival, police say the suspect 47-year old stephen davis was sitting on the porch with a gun and began firing shots as police approached him. the suspect then fled off in his car where he later crashed into a ditch. it is unknown if the suspect was killed by gunfire of the vehicle crash. the incident remains under investigation. a fraternity president is behind bars this morning after being accused of sexual assault. wolfgang ballinger is facing multiple charges -- including attempted rape in the frist degree. the 21-year old is the president of psi upsilon chapter at cornell university. his lawyer entered a guilty plea for the student, but has not made any comments regarding the incidents.

thousand dollars cash or set to appear in court on tuesday. a north carolina man dies after challenge. contestants are supposed to run and eat doughnuts at the same time. officials say the 58-year old male reported having chest pains within the first mile of the race. he was transported to rex hospital where he was pronounced dead. it's the first we are hearing about it. but it deffinently makes you think about when you're running these races how people are involved in it and what they are getting into. it's sad to hear about the krispy kreme challenge is a student-led, charity-based run manage by park schoalrs at n-c state university and supporters of north carolina children's hospital. south korea says it has agreed to being talks with washington on possible deployment of u-s missile defense system. this comes after north korea's

satellite into orbit. however, neighboring nations believe north koreas's launch was a front for a ballistic missle test. according to reports, kim john un gave the order to launch the rocket saturday. u-s officials and south korean leaders immediately criticized the rocket launch. a south korean defense ministry leader described it as a "long- range missile." a u-s defense official said the rocket, based on its trajectory, "did not pose a threat to the u-s or our allies." rescuers find signs of life within the remains of a high-rise residential building that collapsed in a powerful earthquake in taiwan. the natural disaster left 19- people dead as families anxiously waited on site. people across the nation with families overseas say they are praying their loved ones are safe. rina nakano has the story. nats

"i was really shocked." saturday morning, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the island of taiwan. the epicenter... her relatives' home town of tainan. "our first question is of course, is everyone ok?" to her surprise, she received this video. nats christine: "huge apartment buildings just toppled over. water everywhere." several residential buildings collapsed. taiwanese authorities say at least 14 people were killed, among them, a 10 day old baby girl. 484 people are injured, around 60 of them still hospitalized. nats sunnia lin's was in middle school when she felt a 7.8 magnitude quake in taiwan, back in 1986. "early in the morning, 5 o clock, i was jolted off my bed so that one i remember really clearly." this time, her family in the

was safe... but she says the feeling of worry is spreading around the country. reporter standup: many people say this earthquake couldn't have come at a worse time, when people should be celebrating with family. coming up." many say it's the thanksgiving americans. "around this time, people like to focus on family, eating, there's a big chinese new year meal." while the quake has forced celebrations to be on hold, hundreds of people are working feverishly to help one another. "it seems like people are chipping in and helping out and volunteering, providing food for the search and rescue people." luckily for chang's family, everyone was okay. she prays her family's home country will make a swift recovery. light accumulations possible by afternoon. southwest virginia ... here's a best moments. wsls 10 is excited to announce the grand opening of our southside bureau. city leaders .. law enforcement .. and members of our staff were on hand for this week's open house in danville. nearly two- dozen people attended. a nationwide movement among health care centers to reduce the carbon footprint is coming to roanoke. carilion is the first hospital in the roanoke valley to take part in the healthier hospitals initiative. the idea is to improve the health of the environment. a hospital spokesperson says ... major changes are needed to make it possible. those changes include out sourcing with more local food vendors to reduce pollution from transportation

and greenhouse gas emissions. once the roanoke campus adopts all plans of action ... other carilion community hospitals will also look into making the positive changes saint vincent's home is starting two new programs for those with learning disabilities in the roanoke valley. adult and family services will be extended to people over the age of 22 .. who can no longer utilize the blue ridge autism and achievement center. the c-e-o of saint vincent's home says her son has a learning disability. she tells us .. as he grew older .. she decided to push for more adult employment and care programs due to a lack of services here locally. since the launch of the programs yesterday .. nearly half a dozen people have enrolled. leonard says .. because they are currently operating out of donated space -- the next step is to fundraise and find a permanent location. for some couples .. becoming parents is a dream they feel might not come true. after

community .. carilion clinic hired its first doctor specializing in "in vitro fertilization." we sat down with the parents of the first baby conceived and delivered through the system's new i-v-f specialist. heather and william draper now have a beautiful, healthy baby boy .. alecs .. to cradle in their arms. shortly before the drapers learned they would need invitro- emily evans- hoeker .. carilion's specialist .. moved to the area to join a fertility practice. dr. emily evans- hoeker / fertility specialist most everything is done here except for two days, but even during those days when we travel i'm still the one doing it, so they don't have to go see another provider. heather draper / mom just seeing her in north carolina when we got there it just kind of, you know, puts a little smile on your face thinking okay maybe this is going to be okay, it's going to work. as the drapers were leaving the hospital after delivery .. their first stop .. was dr. emily's office. it's super bowl sunday and we

and a moment of silence to honor the 13 year old. to the public. organizers say their will be a limited number of candles...so they encourage people to bring their own. in news around virginia this morning .. rescue crews pull a suspect from hampton creek following a police chase. hampton police say the chase began just after 9-saturday morning when officers responded crash. by the time police arrived to the scene, the driver of one vehicle allegedly already left the scene. police then found the suspect near a home ... that's when the man ran and jumped into the creek. the suspect was taken to the hospital to be treated for non- life threatening injuries. the owner of a virginia beach bakery and her husband are facing charges after being accused of money laundering and selling cocaine. according to city officials, 31-year old cheron johnson is the owner of "g's cake shop." court documents show johnson and her 42-year old

both charged last month. however, the bakery remains open and is only accepting cash payments at this time. court documents show the government is seeking forfeiture of the couple's home along with the business. almost 500 local soldiers in the virginia national guard are preparing for a year long deployment in the middle east. the lynchburg based national guard, made up of men and women from across the area will deploy to qatar in may. they will provide security detail and will relieve another winchester based national guard unit who will return home from their year long deployment. specialist douglas harris / army national guard "it's a good feeling. i know that i am actually doing something, being a part of something that is bigger than myself is a great, great feeling." in march - the 116-th regiment will travel to fort pickett for training. they will complete their training at fort bliss texas. more than two dozen veterans and active duty military members are enjoying a weekend on the slopes.

authorities believe the two could be in danger. the woman has been identified as veronica huerta brown. and the child has been identified as king richard paz. police believe the victim, brown and child were in the care together when a suspect approached them --- grabbing the child and fleeing. authorities say they are investigating the relationship between the suspect and those involved. the shooting victim is a 20-year old male. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a suspect is dead and police officer is in stable condition following a shooting in ohio. a hardin county sheriff says kenton police officer skyler newfer is recovering after being shot twice by a suspect. investigators say police were called to the scene just before five saturday afternoon for a domestic dispute. upon arrival, police say the suspect 47-year old stephen davis gun approached him. the suspect then fled off in his car where he later crashed into a

"it's the chinese new year coming up." many say it's the thanksgiving weekend equivalent for americans. "around this time, people like to focus on family, eating, there's a big chinese new year meal." while the quake has forced celebrations to be on hold, hundreds of people are working feverishly to help one another.
