then ice ... and now water ... causing flooding concerns ... and power outages across the region. 14:09:55 kenney boone/ apco thats usually what happens with an ice storm. trees fall over, branches break out and that is basically what we are finding today the damage control residents ... and local crews are faced with. plus ... storm team ten is tracking another storm system ... bringing more snow to some areas this evening. good evening, and thanks for joining us for wsls 10 at eleven. i'm john carlin. and i'm lindsey ward. southwest virginia is starting to slowly bounce back from the winter storm that dropped a dangerous combination of snow and ice across the region. flooding is a major concern ... following the overnight rain ... and melting of the snow ... also ... local crews have been working all day ... cleaning up downed trees ... and restoring power to the thousands that lost it overnight. now ... there's a clipper system ... that's bringing more snow to parts of the region. storm team ten chief meteorologist jeff haniewich joins us again ... jeff ... after yesterday's

ice and rain, it was nice to see the sun return on tuesday. however, we will still be dealing with the ramifications of the last storm, as there numerous power outages due to downed trees and powerlines. also, we will be monitoring the river levels over the next couple of days because of all the precipitation that fell. a weak clipper system will impact the region tonight bringing some light precipitation with it. we will start to see some light snow southern nrv and mountain empire during the mid- evening hours. as the storm progresses east towards southside, the light snow showers could changeover to rain showers. some flurries are possible across southside, but the light accumulations should stay just west of you into the nrv and mountain empire. these locations could see up to 1"

restore power to the thousands who lost it overnight. appalachian power ... a major service provider throughout the region ... is still reporting a large number of outages. roanoke and franklin counties are seeing the most outages ... there are still more than 47- hundred customers without power in roanoke county ... and nearly 4- thousand in franklin county. bedford ... botetourt ... henry and patrick counties are also reporting outages. utility companies tasked with restoring power due to damage from last night's storm. dominion power ... which serves central virginia is reporting nearly 400 outages between lexington ... covington and buchanan. meanwhile ... in salem ... the city's electric department is reporting about 100 customers who are still without power this evening ... crews expect all power to be restored by tomorrow. and danville utilities is also reporting around 100

leaders say crews will work through the night to restore service to affected customers. the better business bureau urges you use caution before hiring someone to clean up your storm damage. the group says scammers often come out looking to take advantage of homeowners needing help. the b-b-b offers some tips ... be wary of people who show up unsolicited offering help. shop around for contractors and get everything in writing. don't pay for everything up front-- just a deposit. the winter months can be a tough time for local seniors ... the floyd county sheriff's office just launched a new program ... aimed at helping keep seniors safe. it's called "rise and shine floyd." through the program ... dispatchers make daily calls to seniors that do not have someone checking in on them on a regular basis. deputies say if there is no answer after several tries ... someone with the sheriff's office will initiate a wellness check. sheriff brian craig floyd county 14 sec we're looking for seniors in our community, in floyd county,

contest to a perjury charge. leslie engleking entered the plea in bedford county circuit court this morning. during the hearing ... commonwealth's attorney "randy krantz" said ... engleking testified twice and made false statements to protect his sister ... patricia welch. she's also charged with perjury in the case. katherine and sheila lyon went missing from a maryland mall 40-years ago. it's believed they were eventually brought to bedford county. engleking is scheduled to be sentenced on june 7-th. meanwhile ... a former bedford police officer who's facing child porn charges ... is granted bond. reached an agreement to set bond at 20- thousand dollars. as part of the agreement ... mcalexander is not allowed to leave the commonwealth ... he's not allowed to access or use the internet ... and he must stay with his mother in collinsville. he'll be allowed to travel one day a week for necessities or religious services. wes nance/assistant commonwealth's attorney 01:47:01 "we work very closely with

state of crimes up until the prosecution so when there is a member of the law enforcement that's charged or accused of a crime our office has to remove itself from consideration." cont vo mcalexander is expected to have an attorney advisement hearing this friday. new tonight at 11 ... a woman connected to a murder investigation at a roanoke hotel was sentenced today in roanoke city circuit court. according to online court records ... brea belcher was sentenced to 5 years in jail ... with 4 years and 2 months suspended. belcher was charged with accessory after the fact to murder after police found geoffrey ndwiga of roanoke dead inside the rodeway inn last june from apparent gunshot wounds. mya rae lee was also charged with accessory after the fact. jamal daniels was arrested and charged with first degree murder in his death. also new tonight ... the lynchburg police department is investigating 3 counterfeit cases.

incidents happened friday at the ward's road locations of target ... michaels ... and dick's sporting goods. police say fake 100-dollar bills were used. detectives say they're are working to identify the suspect pictured on your screen. anyone who can identify this man ... or has any information about the crime ... is asked to call the lynchburg police department. new tonight at 11 ... deputy tim jones is named as roanoke city's interim police chief. city manager chris morrill made the announcement today during the roanoke city council meeting where current police chief chris perkins was honored. deputy jones will start march 1-st .. the day after chief perkins retires. chris perkins took on the police chief position in 20-10. also new tonight .. as expected, the danville city council approves a requested increase in the city's police force. the move increases the number of city officers from 131 to 135.

wsls ten's brie jackson has been following these outages ... she joins us live in roanoke. brie ... what can you tell us about the repairs. downed trees have caused power outages across the area. the snowfall followed by the cold temperatures created problems. applachian power crews say one of the biggest challenges with this recent storm is the ice. it developed on trees bringing down powerlines. officials say at one point close to 50 thousand customers lost power throughout our region. some of the areas hardest hit include the roanoke valley and

crews have been working since this morning to restore power. they say rural areas and other neighborhoods make take longer than others. 14:10:30 depends on the situation. if it is just a wire down then we have to isolate it. take the switch off and isolate it. if you can get a bucket truck to it, it is a real easy fix. if you have to get into back yards and climb a pole it takes longer calling in contractors to help. currently internal crews are doing what they can to restore power. new tonight at 11 ... if you're planning on boarding the class j-611 steam locomotive in roanoke this spring ... organizers say do not wait to purchase your tickets ... because they are selling fast. walker nelms with the virginia
