long the interstate will stay closed. this morning, the defense calls witnesses for the first time in a federal trial... stemming from the murder of waynesboro police reserve captain--- kevin quick. prosecutors rested their case... after twelve days of presenting evidence... against six alleged gang members ... four of which are charged with murder. wednesday was all about the cell phone evidence the prosecution says first led police to quick's body. the prosecution points to a gang killing... claiming all of the suspects are members of the 99 goon syndicate. the case is set to resume this morning in roanoke. # a grand jury charges a suspect in the so called "mansion murders" in washington d.c. the grand jury investigating the case returned 20-felony indictment against 35-year- old darren wint. wint is charged in the d.c. home invasion that authorities say left savvas and amy savopoulos ... their 10-year-old son and their housekeeper dead. wint was arrested last may and remains in police custody. if convicted he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without

criminal investigation is ongoing and more suspects could face indictments in the case.### new details are emerging about the controversial birth control--- essure. a pennsylvania congressman is claiming more deaths are linked to the birth control device--- "essure"--- than originally reported by the f-d-a new data shows evidence of fetal deaths dating back to 2008... and finds a total of more than 3- hundred fetal deaths from essure. the f-d-a previously reported only five deaths. the findings were released by congressman--- mike fitzpatrick. he recently proposed a bill that would pull it from the market .. to protect other women . fitzpatrick is now confronting the f-d-a... calling for a review of the new data. # in 10 cares heart health, having a heart attack or heart disease is a life changing event. after diagnosis, you have to make immediate changes to your diet and exercise to avoid further problems. fred st. clair first suffered a heart attack at the age of 42. it was a wakeup call that required him to alter his

five days left until the roanoke valley gives day. it's a 24-hour period where the community is encouraged to give back to local non- profits. regardless of what you want to support.. it seems there is something for everyone... from the american red cross... to angels of assisi... downtown roanoke inc... and friends of the blue ridge parkway-- there are more than one-hundred- twenty local organizations taking part in the big day. this is the first time the roanoke valley has ever held a day of online giving like this.. and organizers are hoping for a big response from the community. similar events across the commonwealth have been extremely successful.. like the online giving day in richmond, that raised more than one and a half million dollars. the goal for roanoke's give big day... to reach 150-thousand dollars in just twenty-four hours. it's very easy, you go to the roanoke valley gives website and pick from a list of organizations and its right in front of you. you can do it in your pajamas when you're getting ready to go to bed or getting ready for work. just take 5 minutes and do it.. it's a very easy way to make a huge

virginia tech. it includes plans for a new business school... and a university commons building. # amherst county holds a kick off meeting to talk about developing a strategic plan for the county. the plan will have recommendations allowing the county to grow in light of the closing of the central virginia training center and the changing economy. the plan is expected to look at the current and future needs of people living there, how to increase the tax base and create jobs. three hundred jobs were cut at the cvtc in 2015 with the remaining 900 expected to leave by 2020. the u.s. postal service celebrates black history month today at 1 p.m. at the main office in roanoke. the celebration will honor and highlight the contributions of american americans to u.s. history. there will be several guest speakers as well as a musical tribute. the postal service also has a series of stamps so you can learn about historic people, places and events.### virginia's blue ridge website wins a national award.

travel and tourism category for website design. it was judged in five different categories ... including design ... content ... feature functionality ... usability and standards compliance. the website was re-launched in april last year. it recorded a record number of 6-hundred - thousand unique visitors last year. # if you think you're being healthier by skipping the soda machine and going to starbucks.. you may want to think again. a new study by the group action on sugar finds that some flavored coffee drinks can contain more sugar than soda. they found some drinks contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar. that's three times more than what is found in can of soda and more than three times the maximum adult daily intake. starbucks says it has committed to reduce added sugar in its "indulgent drinks" by 25-

says a missing woman has been found. they are looking for this woman, bernice proctor. deputies received a call wednesday about a suspicious car parked on old liberty drive in martinsville. they say the car belongs to proctor. her family says they haven't heard from her and don't know where she is. a family member says she's left home in the past. if you have information, call 911.### a man is behind bars... following a car chase in amherst county. deputies say 53- year-old "lawrence crank" from lynchburg sped away from deputies after trespassing at riveredge park in madison heights tuesday. after an 8-mile chase ... deputies say crank got out of his car ... and ran off. he was arrested a short time after. crank faces several charges... including possession of meth with intent to distribute ... felony eluding ...and trespassing . # a federal grand jury indicts nevada rancher cliven bundy. the felony charges are connected to the standoff with authorities at his nevada ranch in 20-14.

oregon, where his sons ryan and ammon bundy were involved in the occupation of an oregon wildlife refuge. both sons -- along with two other men were indicted along with the elderly rancher wednesday. the sixteen counts carry prison terms and fines. most serious counts are assault on a federal law enforcement officer, and extortion. cliven bundy could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.### the university of texas announces it has approved rules ... allowing concealed handgun license holders to bring their weapons into classrooms. the decision was announced by the university's president following a review of the controversial campus carry law. the senate bill was passed last year. it will go into affect august 1- st. the president says ... while he does not believe handguns belong on campus ... he is obligated to enforce the law. he says the next step is to form a campus carry implementation task force. # a measure to reduce emphasis on standardized testing in schools advances through the

goal for the roanoke valley to reach... 150- thousand dollars in just 24-hours. this is the first time that the roanoke valley has ever taken part in an online day of giving like this. based on other similar events across the state... leaders are expecting it to be very successful. online giving events have raised anywhere from one- hundred- thousand dollars... to more than a million and a half. and for the 120 organizations taking part in "roanoke valley gives", like family service of roanoke valley.. this is money that will have a big impact on their day-to-day operations. ruth cassell, the chief development officer, tells me that money raised online that day will be used to advance their program for children. so get online, do some research and see what really means soemthing to you and what you're passionate about. when you find it 100% of your donation will go to that agency. it gives them money they need. for us, it's child therapy and

despite having a handful of dedicated therapists and three child therapy rooms.. there are still more than thirty children on a waiting list for play therapy. cassell is hoping that they money they raise will help the program reach even more children. you still have some time to decide how your want to donate your money.. "roanoke valley gives" begins just after midnight on march sixteenth.. and runs for 24- hours straight. i'm eb, wsls 10. a scary situation for a roanoke county firefighter.. who fell through two floors in a burning home. roanoke county firefighters were called to a fire along green hill drive nearly a week ago. firefighter robert mauck fell thru two floors... and was caught in the floorboards. his training kicked in... and he was able to free himself. robert mauck, roanoke county fire fighter: "i could see around and i noticed in the basement, in the area i was, i could not see any fire. i didn't feel any fire coming down on me. i decided the best thing for me to do at that point was to

to get my own self out." with only bruises to show ... he is lucky to be standing. he's accepted a new position as deputy fire marshall. # some central virginia groups are rallying against the atlantic coast pipeline after new developments. energy companies behind the pipeline came up with a new route, but these groups say it's still not good enough. the new path reduces the impact to national forests by one third, but affects 249 new land owners. the piedmont group of the sierra club met wednesday to talk about the project. it wants to see renewable energy being built instead of gas pipelines. joe lovett, executive director of appalachian mountain advocates: 15:56:38 "we should be making a transition from coal to renewables not from coal to natural gas" a spokesperson from dominion says the company is investing in renewable energy too. but the company says renewable energy alone cannot produce enough energy around the clock to make up for all the coal-fired

the health and human services secretary will visit flint michigan today... to get a firsthand look at the federal response to the city's water crisis. secretary burwell will talk with local leadership and community members about the next steps to address the ongoing health challenges. called for quick action in flint to remove and replace old pipes in the city. but governor rick snyder announced a plan wednesday to coat the city's pipes with a protective film and conduct an infrastructure study first. # power crews are still working this morning to fully repair the damage after this week's winter storm. right now... schools are starting to get back to normal with just a few delays this morning. one local family says they've slept in a cold house the last two days

"lawrence crank" from lynchburg sped away from deputies after trespassing at riveredge park in madison heights tuesday. after an 8-mile chase ... deputies say crank got out of his car ... and ran off. he was arrested a short time after. crank faces several charges... including possession of meth with intent to distribute ... felony eluding ...and trespassing . # a federal grand jury indicts nevada rancher cliven bundy. the felony charges are connected to the standoff with authorities at his nevada ranch in 20-14. bundy was arrested in oregon, where his sons ryan and ammon bundy were involved in the occupation of an oregon wildlife refuge. both sons -- along with two other men were indicted along with the elderly rancher wednesday. the sixteen counts carry prison terms and fines. most serious counts are assault on a federal law enforcement officer, and extortion. cliven bundy could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.### the university of texas announces it has approved rules ... allowing concealed handgun license

a scary situation for a roanoke county firefighter.. who fell through two floors in a burning home. roanoke county firefighters were called to a fire along green hill drive nearly a week ago. firefighter robert mauck fell thru two floors... and was caught in the floorboards. his training kicked in... and he was able to free himself. robert mauck, roanoke county fire fighter: "i could see around and i noticed in the basement, in the area i was, i could not see any fire. i didn't feel any fire coming down on me. i decided the best thing for me to do at that point was to try to get my own self out." with only bruises to show ... he is lucky to be standing. he's accepted a new position as deputy fire marshall. # some central virginia groups are rallying against the atlantic coast pipeline after new developments. energy companies behind the pipeline came up with a new
