mother and daughter ... who haven't been seen since thursday night ... have been found safe in cumberland, pennsylvania. according to police ... 33-year- old c'ere lewis and her 9- year-old daughter sesha hill were found safe late friday night. their family was worried and said it was highly unusual that lewis took off. family members say lewis would never let sesha miss school. it's not known why lewis and her daughter were in pennsylvania. in other news around virginia ... a richmond man and researcher at the college of william and mary is arrested on child pornography charges. police arrested 46-year-old michael wilson friday afternoon. he's charged with four felony counts of possession of child pornography. according to the schools website ... wilson is a research biologist at the center for conservation biology. he's being held at the virginia

virginia lawmakers fail to ban the specific use of smartphone apps while driving. this ... after members of the house of delegates postponed debate on a bill until 20- 17. highway safety advocates claim it's still legal for virginia drivers to post to social media while on the road. this comes as police in philadelphia investigate whether snapchat played a role in the deaths of three young women. the social media app features a filter which posts drivers' speeds while they record videos. according to triple-a ... more drivers are trying to set personal speed records and capture the moments with the speed displayed on the video. dominion virginia power could be fined after mineral oil spilled into the potomac river. the virginia department of environmental quality issued a notice of violation for the spill. a transformer failure at a substation in crystal city led to the release of more than 13- thousand gallons of

the senate passed legislation eliminating sanctions physicians could face from the board of medicine if they put lyme patients on antibiotics for longer than virginia's standard of 28 days. some physicians refuse patients seeking help for lyme or other tick-borne illnesses due to the possibility of investigations. this bill would clear the way for doctors to follow guidelines created by the federal government. the bill is headed to a house of delegates subcommittee on tuesday. the washington monument will be closed until next week to repair an elevator control box. according to the national park service ... the control box was damage by a contractor working in the structure on an unrelated issue. the reopening date will be determined as repairs are made over the weekend. turning now to news making national headlines ... the aircraft that crashed into pearl harbor thursday ... is salvaged. it took divers and crews about an hour to float the downed

roanoke valley home sales are 20-16. according to the roanoke valley association of realtors... the number of homes sold in january was the highest number of home sales during the month of january since 2007. the agency reports 287 homes were sold last month in roanoke, salem and botetourt, craig and roanoke counties. that's up from 248 homes sold in january of 2015. the average home price last month was just over 190- thousand dollars.

southwest virginia ... here's a look back at some of this week's best moments. students at gretna elementary now have a new way to learn about science ... technology ... engineering and math. the school received a 17- thousand dollar grant through the danville- pittsylvania chamber to purchase legos for the students. kindergarten students will use them to help understand shapes ... color patterns and basic math. first through fifth grade students will use the legos to build robots and other simple machines. the legos are part of the "we do stem" program the lego company offers and are specifically designed to help students learn about stem subjects. a historic site that's been struggling with finances is finally

natural bridge is now caught up on more than a million dollars worth of debt. the owners of the historic hotel missed their yearly payment of more than nine hundred thousand dollars. they also owed taxes to rockbridge county and various vendors for renovation work. after donating the natural bridge caverns to the state ... they were able to recoup one million dollars in tax credits to help pay off those debts. they've also received helped from private donors. southside saw a few inches of snow earlier this week.. about three inches fell in danville. that means there were a lot of walkways and sidewalks that needed to be shoveled. that's where a 55-year-old named logan comes in. by monday afternoon ... logan had already shoveled seven sidewalks and walkways of houses around him. logan says he feels like it's part of his responsibility to take care of his neighbors. he says many can't do it themselves. the 55-year-old says as long as

roanoke a seven-year-old girl fighting cancer who's stuck in the hospital was about to spend valentines day this year without a valentine. that was before 20 fraternity guys showed up. jake burns has the story. nats: katie "do you know what subway surfers is?" metul shah/vcu medical school student "nuhum." the seven year old and the med school student are unlikely valentines. metul shah and katie whatley met eight days ago. metul was on a rotation at the children's hospital of richmond at vcu and found out that katie didn't have a valentines. metul shah/vcu medical school student "and it's just unfair cause of her classmates, none of

roanoke valley home sales are off to a positive start for 20-16. according to the roanoke valley association of realtors... the number of homes sold in january was the highest number of home sales during the month of january since 2007. the agency reports 287 homes were sold last month in roanoke, salem and botetourt, craig and roanoke counties. that's up from 248 homes sold in january of 2015. the average home price last month was just over 190- thousand dollars. hoverboards ... one of the holiday's most popular gifts ...

prestigious school like virginia tech. enrollment numbers show few african american men are choosing virginia tech for higher education. jospeh owusu is a junior at tech. he's currently enjoying his career at the university --- but says it was hard becoming a hokie .. transitioning from high school to college. his biggest challenge ... often times being the only minority in a classroom. which is why organizers in the group black men excellence network are hosting the "uplifting black men conference." the goal --- to understand issues black men like owusu face in higher education so they don't leave the school. tommy amal/chair black men excellence network - "making sure those students are successful here making sure they have a great time here and making sure they are setup for success," students in the black men excellence network are hoping eventually there will be some push with recruitment to make virginia tech more attractive to miniorites, especially african american males. in the new river valley duke carte wsls ten.

city schools' grading system and possible changes may be coming for standardized testing. w-s-l-s ten's jenna zibton has the details in today's education matters. lynchburg students will have caps to their grade point averages starting next year. after some lengthy discussions... the school board voted in favor of the change five to four. the school board chair -- "mary ann hoss" says students are putting so much pressure on themselves... and families are putting so much pressure on them... but at the end of the day... it comes down to individual choices. hoss says board members voting in favor felt like students were taking excess a-p classes... and giving up the opportunity to take electives so their g-p-a would not be affected. but those voting against the change felt like high achieving weren't going to be rewarded for their work. hoss says this will help put students on a more even playing field. current 11th and 12th graders will be grandfathered in. the new system will start with current 10th grades at the start of the next school year.
