i looked and saw the camper flying through the air. cont vo john images of before lead the way for the destruction left behind. damage stretches the 460 corridor from the new river valley to virginia beach. with appomattox seeing the worst of mother nature. lindsey sot "i just didn't think i was i just didn't think i was going to make it. cont vo change three are dead including a toddler .. more than a dozen injured .. and one missing tonight. we're bringing you live team coverage as communities mourn and begin to pick up the pieces. good evening, and thanks for joining us for wsls 10 at eleven. i'm john carlin. and i'm lindsey ward. governor terry mcauliffe declares a state of emergency as cleanup is underway across the commonwealth .. and here in our area. the governor's office announcing tonight .. he'll tour the hardest hit areas tomorrow. that includes appomattox county. extensive damage has closed down

people without homes. i've been with the sherriff office 32 years. this is the worst i've ever seen our very own brie jackson is live tonight in appomattox county. brie -- we are in evergreen where it's likely a tornado hit. we won't know for sure until tomorrow. what we do know is that severe weather caused whatanu are saying is the worst damage

here's a look at the destruction after a likely tornado ripped through appomattox. the central baptist church, once a community gathering place, is now destroyed. its signature steeple blown nearly 200 feet away. ralph cheatham / appomattox 12:24:15 it's upsetting there is a lot of damage that happened to people i know reports are in of nearly 45 homes damaged, this one a total loss. police say the homeowner got out safely but their belongings are ruined. brie standup we are getting a closer look at the damage that this storm has left behind. i'm standing in what was once someone kitchen. the shelves have been destroyed the bricks are on the ground and we are also looking at what may have been their living room. shattered pictures and memories left behind now that this home has been destroyed. neighbors are also lucky to be alive after this truck flipped over with margaret dinges and her son steve inside. 12:39:05 steve said hold on and i didn't hold on cause i didn't know what he was talking about. i looked and saw the camper flying through the air. while they are shaken up, the family is thankful they survived. evergreen suffered widespread damage including downed trees and power lines. emergency crews blocked off roads and coordinated efforts to keep people safe.

sign, as just a couple of hours and emergency crews cleaning up from the storm. "i just didn't think i was going to make it. the wind and the rain, it was devastating." alice clerval clung to trees for dear life in her front yard as the storm passed through. her mobile home was completely destroyed, everything a total loss. thankfully, she her two sons and her 17- year-old dog are safe. her next-door neighbor was storm came through. thankfully he was able to get to his basement in time. sandy hamlett, sr./survived storm "with the wind blowing, it sounded like a train, it was right on me." stand up "while his home wasn't damaged from the store several of his beehives like this one here the honey still intact

scattered all across the ground. he says he will be able to save a few of the hives but for the most part they are a total loss." dominion power plans to be on scene all night and says it will likely be mid day tomorrow before they get everyone's power is restored. "this is catastrophic. it's going to take a while to get it back on. we are just going to work safe, take our time. dominion power says they will have about 150 crew members out here tomorrow working to get all of the downed lines repaired.

our storm team 10 meteorologists were on the air for several hours tracking this system minute by minute as it made it's way through our area. alan - this is a very strong indication on radar that this could be a tornado on the ground right over evergreen to the south and east of appomattox, riverridge road, appomattox, buckingham state road that looks like it could possibly be hit. jeff -- this is some of the strongest rotation i've seen storm team 10 chief meteorologist jeff haniewich joins us now. jeff -- this will no doubt go down as one of the most active days we have had in the last three to five years. we had several tornado

warnings across the region, with many reports of damaging wind and large hail. it certainly looks like a tornado touched down in appomattox county, near evergreen, as well. the national weather service's survey team will investigate this area, along with a few others to see how many tornadoes we did see this afternoon. our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by today's storms. here's the good news: the severe weather threat is over. we may have some lingering showers tonight, but the real weather story is the wind. a wind advisory is in effect until 7:00a friday for areas along and west of the parkway. wind gusts over 50 mph are possible in this time-frame. behind this powerful disturbance, we will turn cooler thursday through saturday. we could actually be cold enough in the mountains to see some snow showers, as wrap-around moisture kicks in. without question, most of these accumulating snow

newsroom.. state police say the missing man in the evergreen community of appomattox is dead. his remains will be transported to the office of the medical examiner for positive identification. this now brings total deaths in virginia to 4 ... 3 in waverly; 1 in appomattox county state police tell us appomattox county is in the process of setting up a help line to keep people up-to-date on information and available resources. that number is 434-352-2637 meanwhile -- crews are on scene in tappahannock right now. our media partner nbc 12 is reporting several people are trapped within storm wreckage. state police say more than 20 people were hurt and taken to the hospital.

fatalities at this time. the storm turned deadly in waverly... a small town outside of petersburg. at least three people are dead and eight others hurt. state police confirmed the three victims -- all males -- a two-year-old.. a 26-year-old and 50-year-old... were thrown from a mobile home during the storm. brian reid- witness raw 11:34 "so i thank god i thank god i thank my lord jesus christ that i'm still alive right now and i hope the families that's gotten hit even more, i'm hoping that everything is going to be ok with them." emergency responders will be spending the overnight hours combing through the debris, searching for those in need. those living in waverly are encouraged to stay inside as cleanup of gets underway. we will of course continue to keep you up to date on this developing story. when we're not on the air.. you can get up to date information on our website.. wsls dot com. and make sure to tune in

community members in montgomery county are asking for help to make a problematic road safe. brush creek road near riner has had issues ever since the flooding that happened last september. now .. neighbors say the road is so bad they fear even an emergency vehicle could not arrive safely. wsls 10's bethany teague shows us the conditions. patsy stull

it's never been as bad as it is right now. patsy stull has lived on brush creek road in montgomery county for 40 years. she says after a week's worth of rain and snow melting.. this is what her neighborhood looked like. patsy stull 40-year resident we expect some mud and a little slick, but nothing like the ruts that started occurring over the weekend, and we've never seen conditions like that before. but this road has not gone without problems in the past. frank glover has lived here 23 years. he says his home's foundation and basement have been damaged by water and gravel runoff from the road. frank glover 23-year resident it's terrible for myself. i'm disabled. it's terrible for my wife. a picture's worth a thousand words. bubba smith owns a farm along brush creek road. this is where he has to transport cattle in and out. smith says he has lost about two acres of crops because of gravel runoff into his field. bubba smith farmer i guess i'm just at a loss for hay. vdot spokesman jason bond says workers have been here every day this week trying to fix the problems. residents say they would like to see the workers more often before things get to this point. bubba smith farmer regular maintenance. love to see some different ditching done. when the potholes are 14 inches deep, that something's done about them before they're that bad. bond says vdot does do regular maintenance on this

up with the more than 100 miles of other unpaved roads in montgomery county. board of supervisors member todd king says the county and vdot have agreed to contribute 225 thousand dollars each to have this stretch paved next year. for those who drive it every day.. that can't come soon enough. bubba smith farmer love to see it just to the point where we can drive up and down the road without engaging four wheel drive in the summertime. but while they wait.. their request is clear. patsy stull 40-year resident for right now, just get us out of the mud.
