appomattox county yesterday afternoon. the appomattox county sheriff's office has released the name of the person who died during the storm. 78 year old edward keith harris found near his home on twin tunnel lane his body was located around 10 p.m. last night. wsls ten's erin brookshier has been in the area since early morning.... and joins us live with more on the cleanup process. erin what's happening there right now? ### we've seen dozens of families and volunteers cleaning up and sorting through the debris. you can see the home behind me... this is just one.... of dozens of homes in this area that has been destroyed. some have minor damage.. are just missing shingles or some siding, but others have been completely leveled.

pulled up by the roots... the sides or top levels of homes come platelet pulled off. at this point, many people are just sorting through the debris, looking for valuable items. sheila ferguson / cleaning up friend's home - "when you see your really good friend has built her home and all of her things and she had nothing left. we've already had people on fb tell us they want to help anyway they can and to just let us know what she needs. and so i know the community is going to come together. this cleanup is a process that will take some time. i spoke to one man who says in the 50 years he's lived here.. he's never seen anything like this. he described the damage as something you would only see in

the virginia national guard is in several of the hardest hit communities right now helping to clean up the storm damage. the guard has been deployed to essex, richmond, westmoreland, sussex and patrick countries. soldiers have been organized into teams to help first responders clear fallen trees and debris. additional soldiers and locations may be added if needed.### cleanup efforts are underway in waverly... a small town in sussex county. at least three people were killed.. including a 2-year old. eight others were hurt. matthew mclellan shows us the damage. # we are getting ready the first look at the damage the day after. the sun is up and everything is illuminated. looking around it is stunning the scope of the damage. if you look here you see two sets of steps and the foundation for a mobile home. it was picked up from its place and thrown across route 460... this is the location where those two men and little boy were when they were thrown.

look at this debris. there are branches and limbs lying all over the place. if you take a look here you see a lot of what was inside of their living their lives. now their home is gone and their loved ones. looking in this direction this was once a road. covered in debris, downed trees limbs and power lines. moving in this direction this house only minimally damaged... between two homes severely damaged. the other mobile home... you're looking inside the house... contents strewn all over the yard. you can see where the wall has come down. the va nations guard sending at least 50 appomattox county today to assess storm damage and meet with first responders.

they are doing their job. >> [ inaudible ] >> well, first you expect us in the command center to keep our heads on straight and make sure we are doing everything -- when you are in a command center you have 15 people that are connected to the headquarters you hope you are doing everything possible. we train over and over for these situations. when the first reports came out last night that three individuals has been killed including a 2-year-old child it breaks your heart. you think about all the family that is are impacted. we do have here i think there

four i believe have been released but i believe the two are still in critical condition and have been moved to a medical facility. we are doing everything we can to make sure we can help everybody. >> that was the governor addressing the media talking about what he is seeing what he was flying in. talking about 12 to 15 mile damage path to show how strong and long-lived the storms we were dealing with yesterday. >> we got new information. they are thinking eight tornadoes touched down in virginia yesterday. school kept kids late. they kept school busses off the roads. >> which is exactly what you want to do. >> they are calling this a serious situation.

published -- from 1950 to 2013 there were only four tornadoes in that 63 year period. we saw several it looks like yesterday. >> the governor will be travelling to other areas across virginia later today after he surveys the damage. >> a tornado moved through there. some injuries they are said to be critical. several people were trapped with rescues taking place into the might. police say they have accounted for the people who were missing. the storm had a six mile damage path. >> a couple of houses that are gone. completely. the church is gone. a lot of people are hurt. there were like three or four people.

side of the system. today, the cold side. flow will bring us the low winds. we have winds gusting over 40 miles per hour in roanoke and hot springs. we did see winds gusting over 50 miles per hour and are expecting to repeat on and off through the day overnight into early on our friday warning. wind advisory west of the blue ridge parkway until 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. because the windses is out of the north and west we are dealing with snow slope showers. we do have a small spill over special along points to the west. same thing as we head into the highlands. this is going to be pretty persistent. by friday afternoon we will enjoy more sunshine.

we are not seeing accumulation. we could see accumulating snow in our west virginia counties. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow because of the blowing snow and accumulating snow. we have minor flooding as well. for the roanoke river at randolph until saturday afternoon. right now we are match warmer east of the blue ridge parkway. we are looking at the 30s in the nrv. this afternoon temperatures in the 40s for most areas but cooler in the area. still breezy tomorrow but it gets better. the weekend looks great. 61 sunday only a few isolated stay mild. jenna and patrick?

trees a few minutes ago we heard from the governor who is touring the state today. he is now out on the ground. giving us a first hand look at the extend of this damage. >> this is a lot of what we are seeing. we are seeing trees on top of anything you can imagine. homes ripped down to foundations in some cases. >> this is what the governor's office believe eight tornadoes that touched down along the common wealth.
