we are following breaking news tonight out of kansas.. where authorities say four people including the gunman are dead after a series of attacks. police say 14 people were also hurt in the shootings at excel industries... a manufacturing plant where the gunman was employed. dan scheneman brings us the latest. dylan/shooting witness : "everybody said that there was gunshots, there was a shooter, and we just kept hearing pop pop." it was near the end of the work day when authorities in south central kansas were called to a shooting...a man driving a truck hit in the shoulder.... that was followed by a report of another attack at another location and then......word of an active shooter inside excel industries... sot jordan/employe e: "it didnt' matter who it was he had no specific target, he just... shooting anyone who got in his way." authorities say there were multiple fatalities and more injured.... donna / excel employee "just oh my god total shock just trying to get out of there and get help... there was a guy down and he needed help." outside the plant....relative s waited and worried. sot

know what this world's coming to." authorities eventually confirmed the scene was secure and the suspect was among the dead. 19:38:56 sheriff t. walton: the shooter himself has been shot and killed, he's an excel employee." in all....authorities say there are four crime scenes. the sheriff says the attacks are connected....the shooter traveled in between sites ande fired from his car....and for now the motive is not known. dan scheneman nbc news. central virginia continues to pick up the pieces tonight after the strongest tornado to hit the commonwealth touches down in appomattox county. one person died from yesterday's storm in appomattox county. he's been identified as 78- year-old edward harris. state police say.. his wife was among the seven people hurt. two of them remain in the hospital tonight with serious injuries. governor terry mcauliffe got a first hand look at the damage today. more than a dozen homes were destroyed and 100 other structures damaged. wsls 10's colter anstaett is live in appomattox county tonight

the storm. colter -- how are people staying motivated and keeping going? thanks to volunteers like those here at evergreen baptist church, who are making sure those cleaning up from damage like this are getting all of the support that is coming in to them from the community. lory king/volunteer "it's been a bunch of blessings. we are overwhelmed all the gifts all the help all the volunteers." that overwhelming support is what allows lory king and the rest of the volunteers at evergreen baptist church to continue to help first responders and community members as they continue to clean up from the storm. stand up "take a look at this. this is just one of the incredible seems that remains from yesterday storm. this black car here is just completely smashed under the weight of this tree. a total loss. this truck here next to it, covered in mud the windshield completely shattered. but if you'll notice

you've got books, several books. likely something someone came through today and try to salvage. and that is exactly why the volunteers have been here at evergreen baptist church all day. trying to keep these people going to hopefully help these people going so that so that they can hopefully save more books and personal memories." the appomattox animal shelter has also received a lot of support as they were without power and water until late this afternoon. shawn dunham/shelter manager "we have received about 100 bottles of water, over 1000 pounds of dog food and probably almost the same amount of cat containers of sanitizer wipes, towels, pine pellets we use for cat litter." despite all of the sadness and grief in the community after the storm lory king says this community has a bright future. and with hs hoops region titles up for grabs in the coming days.. our own alyssa rae checks in with another local power that's rolling towards another trip to richmond.. as the saying goes, "every dog has it's day." well for the martinsville bulldogs, that day came last year, winning the 2a basketball state championship. jeff adkins/martinsvi lle head coach:"it's very hard to repeat as champions, everybody is gunning for you and every game gets tougher at this stage." in martinsville, the hunt to become a bulldog starts when they're just little pups, and this pack has played together for years. aaron martin/bulldogs junior: "we've just been playing for a long time, i just feel like we know each other a lot and it feels like my brothers out there playing together." the big dog on this squad is 6 foot 7, radford bound devonnte holland, who sniffed out his 2 thousandth point in their 92-47 victory over appomatix monday in the first round of regionals.
