it's all part of a big initiative that aims to make our area safer. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live with more on why police say crashes like this are so bad.. erin?### if you think about what happens when you run a red light.. one drive is totally unaware the other will be speeding through the light. which ends up in a t-bone type crash... the side of the vehicles don't have as much of a cushion as the font does with the engine.. or the rear does with the trunk-- so if you are t- boned, the side of the car can cave in and led to an even more dangerous situation. each year.. there are hundreds of deaths and more than one- hundred thousand injuries as a result of someone running a red light. in this particiular crash, the reason why red light running is so dangerous, is because what the people like to do, they beat the light. so that has speed involved. you see the light change from
5:38 am
they inherently speed up. you have the potential of pinning somebody in with the collapse of the car and really causing serious injury or death and that's why running red lights is so dangerous. this is just one of many similar police campaigns that will be taking place throughout the year. today's initiative will stretch across the roanoke valley.. even reaching into christiansburg and the new river valley. i'm told officers will be out at major intersections and on back roads as well.. so if you run a red light today, chances are-- you will be stopped. keep that in mind, and drive safely as you head out the door to work this morning. i'm eb, wsls 10. a virginia legislative panel killed a bill that would have allowed the names of police officers be kept secret from the news media and the public. the bill put open records advocates... up against law enforcement groups... in a fierce debate about government transparency. it was introduced in response to a recent court ruling... directing the state to turn over the names and employment dates of thousands of law
