authorities say it happened just before eight- thirty friday night in the 100- block of wesley drive. officers received a call about a robbery -- upon arrival, a female victim told authorities a man struck her in the chest. that's when she dropped her phone and the suspect took it and ran. police say the suspect left the scene in a white vehicle. the victim was not injured and the incident remains under investigation. governor terry mcauliffe signs gun compromise legislation ... enacting stronger gun laws across the commonwealth. the bills will expand concealed carry agreements with states across the country... require people under protective and require state police presence at gun shows for voluntary background checks. governor terry mcauliffe the debate on gun safety has had sharp edges that has kept all of us apart for so many years, but we braved those sharp edges together this year, and we can be proud of

building upon the progress that we are making here today despite heavy criticism... the governor says he made his decision to sign the bills based on safety and not politics. turning to national headlines this morning ... a woman is arrested in connection with the deadly kansas shooting rampage. police say the gunmans former girlfriend sarah hopkins is charged with knowingly giving a firearm to a convicted felon. if convcited, hopkins could face ten years in federal prison. polo sandoval takes us through what happened the day cedric ford opened fire shooting more than a dozen people -- killing three. 15 people shot at this lawnmower- manufacturing plant in a tiny kansas town. unlike most of the flags in hesston, the one outside excel industries doesn't fly at half staff..it sits in what is still an active crime scene. kirk thompson kirk thompson, kbi director "we ask your understanding as we do very difficult work

investigators say a 38-year old employee shot and killed three of his co- workers and injured twelve others. .the random attacks started miles away. polo sandoval polo sandoval, reporting "this rural intersection is where the killer's first shots were fired. police say he shot and wounded a man driving with his two children, and then missed a woman traveling in a separate vehicle." polo sandoval, reporting "this ditch, just two miles away is where police say the next shooting happened. investigators say the gunman forced the driver of a pick up truck off the road, shot him in the leg, then made off with his vehicle" the gunman then made the four-mile drive to excel industries and opened fire. matt jarrell matt jarrell, witness/ suspect's co- worker "he flung open the door like i showed you in the picture. the door is still open. he hopped out and doosh doosh doosh he shot someone down outside and went inside the building." matt jarrell tells cnn's rosa flores, he was scheduled to take a break from his post at the factory's paint shop. ..when he went looking for his replacement, the man scheduled to take over for him was shooting. matt jarrell, witness/ suspect's

rosa flores, reporting "happy?" matt jarrell, witness/ suspect's co- worker "yeah - he looked like he hopped out almost with a smile on his face." inside the factory, it was the small town's police chief who chased-down and killed the shooter. a clue as to what triggered the rampage - a restraining order filed by the gunman's former girlfriend and served at this workplace just 90 minutes before the shooting started. now the small town of hesston is coming together remembering three lives cut short there's 30- year-old renee benjamin. joshua higbee was 31..brian sadowsky, 44. all employees at the same plant where the killer worked. in what's news today... if you're a fan of girl scout cookies ... head out to dunbar middle school in lynchburg for "cookie fest." the family friendly event is filled with inflatables, karaoke, face painting and of course cookies. it's happening today from eleven a-m until three this

the support from volunteers in evergreen has been tremendous. county leaders say ... roles for individual volunteers are fulfilled at this time. however ... if you'd like to help ... they're asking for all volunteers to register with a disaster relief agency. a danville organization known for helping communities across the country during disasters is now helping the people in evergreen following the recent tornadoes. members of god's pit crew delivered several pallets of water... gatorade... and blessing buckets friday morning. the buckets are packed full of essentials like toiletries and non-perishable food items. members of god's pit crew were in evergreen yesterday -- working to figure out how they could best use their resources to help out. volunteers say it's bittersweet seeing these locally-donated resources stay here in the area. supplies have also been sent to tapahanock.

children fund. this little boy was given two autographed shirts and a signed football from the iconic player. the boy's father says it was one of the happiest moments of his son's life. it's one of the rarest of all time beatles records and it's being auctioned off. the record disc is described as the "holy grail." this is the popular band's first record to be pressed. it actually helped them get a record contract. the song "hello little girl" is on one side and "till there was you" is on the other. this disc was found in the home of an english pianist. the record is expected to be auctioned off next month for more than 14- thousand dollars. it's a scene right out of a children's book --- a unicorn on the loose. take a look at this. this little 20-year old pony spends her days making people's dreams

juliette the pony got loose on wednesday -- still wearing her unicorn horn. after being on the run, a neighbor was able to bring the "unicorn" back home. juliette's owners say they are making changes to assure she doesn't escape again. luckily, the pony wasn't hurt and no injuries were reported. jonathan kegges joins us with for a look at our forecast. it was a big night in area hoops as a look at our forecast.

following a story out of roanoke county where an officer was involved in a shooting. according it happened just after seven last night near the walgreens on brambelton and electric road. authorities say they received calls of a man who was in the street with a gun. upon arrival, police told the man to put the gun down. that's when police say shots were fired. pio "there was an officer invovled shooting. the suspect was taken to the hospital." so far, there is no word on the suspect's condition. no officers were hurt and the incident remains under investigation. meanwhile, the man who witness friday night's police involved shooting said he never feared for his life, but was shocked to see something such as this. take a listen ... thomas gill / witness "what was your reaction?" ..... "operation zero hour" --which was conducted by local authorities and u-s marshals -- resulted in 170 served warrants, 123 arrests and the seizing of 22 firearms. the u-s marshals say 37-high risk searches were conducted ... confirming 18- gang members. meanwhile, other suspects are facing child sexual assault charges, cocaine distribution and attempted rape. police say an undisclosed number of fugitives remain on the run and the investigation

turning now to political coverage this morning. the democratic presidential candidates are gearing up to face off in today's south carolina primary. nbc's steve handelsman is in columbia with a look ahead in the race for the white house. good morning from columbia, here in south carolina, african americans are expected to make up the majority of voters in today's democratic primary... and that seems sure to power hillary clinton to an easy win... her second in as row after nevada. then comes super tuusday. where in 10 states where democrats have major races ...only in vermont .... bernie sanders' home state, does polling indicate he can win likewise on the republican side... in only one super tuesday state is frontrunner donald trump trailing... ted cruz's home state of texas. despite a shaky debate performance in texas by trump and a strong one by marco rubio... trump got a boost by the endorsement yesterday of new jersey governor chris

s/ steve handelsman / nbc news :45 - 1:02 and so on super tuesday all eyes on texas. can ted cruz lose?? can donald trump, can hillary clinton both lock the nominations just three days now?? and if the presidential election was today, virginians would choose democrat hillary clinton or bernie sanders over donald trump. that's according to a recent poll by hampton university. forty-eight percent of people across the state chose clinton over trump. while 48-percent also chose bernie sanders over trump. the poll was conducted by the university's center for pubic policy. a total of 500 registered voters in the survey say they plan on participating in virginia's general election. the cost of college continues to rise here in the commonwealth. the state's public institutions are, on average, among the nation's most expensive for students. virginia comes in as the fifth

expensive in the country. tuition and fees have increased more than 150- percent over the last 25- years. in this special education matters report -- wsls 10's jenna zibton takes a closer look at what your money is paying for and how we got here. steak & lobster for dinner... pools... and state of the art gyms. these are just a few of the things we found... that you're paying for on virginia campuses. 11:55:45 samantha hart, virginia tech freshman some of the things you're paying for it are really weird. 11:56:59 ilyes adjerid , taking a break from virginia tech 13-17 it's pretty rough. it's just getting more and more expensive, they keep adding fees on and you don't know what they're going to but they just keep raising the price of tuition. ilyes adjerid says the cost is too much... he's taking a break... putting off his mechanical engineering degree. 11:57:18 ilyes adjerid , taking a break from virginia tech i decided to ke the sesr f and i am just kind of rntting my credit back up, get me money and hopefullyt some loans. virginia college costs continue to rise... up seven percent every year... for the past decade.

jars & jelly beans 41-49 the average 4- year school in virginia works out to $11,592 students at virginia tech $12,485 and virginia military institute $16,536 pay more... while radford university $9,809 students pay less. jenna creative standup with car add in room and board--- and the prices rise to an average of $21,228 per year... that's like buying a every year... for four years. 11:43:20 beth armstrong, virginia tech director of university scholarships and financial aid 1:05 - 1:12 there is for some families a sticker shock as we call it when they get that bill and they see us talking about tuition and fees. but the price you pay isn't just for classes... and professors. we found out it also includes a lot of extras. there are mandatory fees... to support athletics, health services, transportation and paying off new buildings. all this paid for almost entirely by student revenue.... meaning students are paying for the experience. a "joint legislative audit and review commission" report...

spending by schools increased... mostly on non- academic services. at radford... students pay fees totaling nearly $3-grand $2,967.... which includes almost $12-hundred for athletics. at virginia tech... it's nearly $2-grand $1857. as the money keeps adding up... students are walking away with more and more debt. 11:39:20 beth armstrong, virginia tech director of university scholarships and financial aid it's obviously a real concern. it's a concern to all of us at virginia tech. virginia tech director of university scholarships and financial aid --- beth armstrong --- says they provide student loan data to the board of visitors... the group that sets tutition rates. current hokies took out more than $93-million dollars in loans in the 2013 academic year. 11:39:27 beth armstrong, virginia tech director of university scholarships and financial aid there is a borrowing issue but we have to make sure we're looking at why students are borrowing. it's very easy for students to accidentally over borrow. schools point to the drop in state support... for the rising costs. at radford university... over the last ten years.... state support dropped from more than 50- percent to less than 40-percent. putting the

now to a wsls ten consumer watch ... starting tuesday, subway will begin selling its new antibiotic-free rotisserie style chicken nationwide. subway frist announced its transition back in october. it will now serve only protein from animals that have never received antibiotics. on april first, chicken strips raised without antibiotics will also be available. subway's goal is to move to anitibiotic-free turkey within the next few years --- as well as beef and pork by 20-25. there is a new website that's making finding a vacation rental a lot easier for people with disabilities. it's called accomable dot-com. in addition to listing disability- friendly and accessible rental properties around the world, it offers detailed information. such as whether the bedrooms and bathrooms have step-free access.

workers to vote on super tuesday. and if the presidential election was today, virginians would choose democrat hillary clinton or bernie sanders over donald trump. that's according to a recent poll by hampton university. forty-eight percent of people across the state chose clinton over trump. while 48-percent also chose bernie sanders over trump. the poll was conducted by the university's center for pubic policy. a total of 500 registered voters in the survey say they plan on participating in virginia's general election. the cost of college continues to rise here in the commonwealth. the state's public institutions are, on average, among the nation's most expensive for students. virginia comes in as the fifth most expensive in the country. tuition and fees have increased more than 150- percent over the last 25- years. in this special education
