collapsed on the sidelines. williams was walking back to the huddle during tonight's game at boston college when he collapsed. you see it right there. he has a history of vertigo and had to be helped in the locker room where he was treated for dizziness. he did return at the end of the game to shake hands following the tarheels comeback victory tonight. >> nearly 100 families spent several hours without heat after a contractor ruptured a gas line installing google fiber in a neighborhood. an eyewitness news reporter was with those crews when they restored service two hours ago. brittany. >> erica, the last piedmont natural gas truck filed out of this area within the last ten minutes. that was after they were here all evening long, ruptured by crews working on google fiber lines. they cleared this area earlier this evening, but we learned

service to 89 homes in this area. many people here told us that they have neighbors who are retired, some have small children and a homeowner told us she was inside of her home sick when she noticed that her heater was blowing out cold air around 4:00 today. >> i would like them to be careful, just imagine if this was or own family and you cut the heat to their house. how would you feel? how can you prevent this from happening again? >> now these are google fiber lines, but the company has contracted with two other companies to do this work and you can see right here, there are lines marking all up and down the street. this marks where they are doing the work and different colors that outline the different utilities. people here tell us the heat and gas was turned on just in time for them to warm their homes through this cold, cold night. live in north charlotte, brittany johnson, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> thank you. channel 9 uncovered the utility

happened on several occasions as both google and at&t work to build their fiber networks. officials told us then even with those brightly colored lines, they expected for more gas lines to be cut across the area. crews are bracing for a surge in those calls. coming up ahead tonight at 11:00, the most common issues they respond to in these bitter cold temperatures. >> breaking news in the last 45 minutes, cmpd told officers arrested a student who they say brought a gun on to the campus at meyers park high school. 17-year-old, mon tez is charged with possession of a handgun property. the gun was found after school notified. right now, we're asking where the gun was found on the campus and if it was loaded, nobody was hurt in this incident. >> just in tonight, donned donald trump and bernie sanders

with 70% of the precincts reporting, 34% of the vote, john kasich has 16%. ted cruz 12% tonight. on the democratic side, bernie sanders 60% of the vote. hillary clinton at 39%. right now, so far 66% of the total votes have been counted. also tonight, coming up in the next 15 minutes, we're going to hear from the winning candidates from both parties and their victories tonight. breaking news right now. just within the past 20 minutes, charlotte mecklenburg school leaders voted to extend the contract for the current superintendent, ann clark. clark's contract would have expired this summer, but in a 6- 3 vote, the school board decided to extend it until june 30 of 2017. several board members say they thought that they needed a full year to search for a replacement. another reason the board members made that decision was because they now want to focus on the issue that brought all of the people to the meeting tonight. and that issue is student

eyewitness news reporter, elsa gillis was there and heard those comments. elsa. >> the hearing went on for almost two hours. this was a passionate crowd of people with varying opinions on student assignment. take this opportunity to bring greater equity and justice across charlotte. dismanteling successful schools within communities carefully chosen by parents. will not fix the fundamental problems of failing schools. >> our school district has resegregated along lines of race and economics where the experiences of our children is vastly different depending on the zip code that falls behind their address. >> here's the immediate time line the board has for student assignment. the community student assignment survey comes to a close on february 22. the board plans to vote on student assignment goals at their february 23 meeting. it also plans to hire a consultant by the end of the month and this spring, the board will determine whether or

is doable for the 2017, 2018 school year even if just in part. the next community engagement session is scheduled for sometime in march. reporting live at the government center, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> thanks, elsa. new at 11:00, the father of a 13-year-old virginia girl whose body was found in north carolina said that she was recently grounded from social media after having inappropriate conversations nicole lovell vanished on january 27 and her body was found four days later. on a dr. phil episode that aired here on channel 9 today, lovell's father said they took her phone away, but then she later got it back. two virginia tech students are now charged with her murder. we just checked and tonight's stock futures are trading down. the market closed down today. look at these not great numbers. down 12 points on the day.

the stock market has been fluxuating all year, with terms like bull market or bare market. to put it simply, a bull market means it's trending up. a bare market means it's going generally down. we've been in a mostly bull market for the past five years. switching over to a bare market would mean a 20% dip from the highest point last year. usually market turmoil doesn't cause a recession, but it can predict a recession. that's what everyone is grappling with right now. >> a huge factor is the cheap gas that we're all loving right now. the energy sector stocks have been suffering because of the free falling price of oil. tomorrow, a north carolina community will honor three muslim students shot and killed near unc chapel hill. prosecutors say that craig hicks killed the three victims last february over an on going parking dispute. a campus wide moment of silence will be held before a memorial inside that school. quarterback, cam newton promises to get the panthers

the team cleaned out their lockers today. cam has been facing harsh criticism for walking out of the post game press conference and today, he admitted that he is a sore loser, but his teammates and head coach, ron rivera jumped to his defense. >> at the end of the day, when you invest so much and things don't go as planned, i think emotions take over. >> they don't know. if you took the time to know who cam newton is, i think there will be more appreciation. >> rivera suggested as a public service that the players should be given more time to collect their thoughts before speaking publicly or to the media after a loss. >> out of town vendors who sell panthers gear will start to leave the charlotte area in the next few days. now that the team is back here in charlotte. we spoke with one popup shop vendor on east morehead street who travels the country selling

his shirts were selling for up to $35 two days ago, but now they are selling for as low as $5. just in the last hour, our two photographers making their way back from the super bowl in santa clara stopped for the night in arizona near the grand canyon. channel 9 photographers, carl mcclane and jeane seaman traveled 750 miles today. you can follow their cross country trip by following the hashtag, wsoc back to charlotte. administrators at a morrisville school say if your child is showing flu-like symptoms, do not send them to class. they notified the health department after several students got sick, but they wouldn't say how many. now, they are starting to clean desks, doorknobs, and other items twice a day. they sent a letter home to parents about this. previous charges from years ago could come back into play for this charlotte man accused in a string of violent robberies. police arrested eric orr sunday morning.

her car at a hotel in north charlotte, then robbed two convenience stores at gunpoint. last summer, a jury found orr not guilty in similar robberies where the suspect wore halloween mask. but our legal analyst say prosecutors could use that against him if it shows a pattern. the debate over an order that north carolina redraw its congressional district's map before next month's primary is heading to the supreme court. last week, a federal panel ruled that district 12 is drawn based on the race of voters and is therefore unconstitutional. this afternoon, the same panel refused to issue a stay to allow the march 15 primaries to go forward until the case could be appealed. new at 11:00, we have an inside look at what contractors want to build in southeast charlotte. leaders are saying that this is their vision for the corner of 7th street and castwell in the elizabeth neighborhood. a forum was held at the museum to ease the communities

just in the last two hours, donald trump and bernie sanders claimed victory in the new hampshire primary. with at least 70% of precincts reporting, trump now has 34% of the republican vote. john kasich in second and there is a tight race for third. on the democratic side, sanders has a commanding 60% of the vote right now over hillary clinton. >> i actually think they like me a lot and then all of a sudden, we started getting numbers in and everyone said, how come they like trump so much? but i have so many friends up here. >> we won because we are honest, the energy, and the excitement that the democratic party will need to succeed in november. >> now the attention turns to south carolina. the republican primary there is february 20. the democratic primary, february 27. and thursday, some of the gop

goes and snow showers in the mountains will begin to wind down by early tomorrow evening, but not before another inch or two where some folks have seen, especially up in ski country, beach mountain, half a foot of snow. we may see an inch or two. lower elevations, maybe a coating to upwards of an inch. neighborhood forecast in davidson, you guessed it, bundle up. temperatures in the mid 30s, plenty of sunshine. wayns borrow, temperatures again may nudge 40. but with the wind, it won't feel that warm. the good news is, depending on how you look at things, little chance for precipitation. if you have weekend plans, you should be good to go for valentine's day. 40 on saturday. mid 30s for valentine's day after a bone chilling start of 13 degrees. faze air as more detail on valentine's day, again, cold, temperatures in the 30s, but nothing falling from the sky. and again, if you're heading out in the evening, you'll need
