student spotted him with it on a school bus. >> i didn't hear anything about it. >> it was alarming news to parents at myers park high school. police say 17-year-old smallwood, a student at the school had a gun on his school bus yesterday around 4:00 p.m. >> not very good. like i say, i have my son going to school here, he's a ninth grader. and i would like to feel secure that he's protected while he's here. you know. so it makes me nervous. >> police say smallwood was part of an after school program. they couldn't say why the teen had the gun but say he may have felt the need to protect himself. >> never would i expect that someone would come or have a reason to come with a gun to school. >> today he appeared in court and was given a public defender but no one in his family was there to speak on his behalf. today school officials wouldn't answer questions about the incident but said he'll be discipline ed according to the

>> hopefully they can stop them from coming on to the property with weapons. >> reporter: with a look into his criminal past, he had one last year. that was about it. he's slated to appear in court later this month on these most recent charges. live tonight in south charlotte, tina terry, channel 9 eyewitness news. tonight new information on a robbery at a college campus in huntersville. the 19-year-old victim was cut knife point. he was treated on the scene at central piedmont community college's campus. the robber got $35. police haven't caught the person. school officials say they'll wait until after the investigation to decide if they'll change their security. new tonight, police in pineville need your help to find a robber who held up a man near carolina place mall. you can see in these surveillance pictures, a man dressed in a hoodie holding up the victim at the wells fargo atm on pineville matthews road. the victim told officers the robber had a gun.

this is the first time i've had one during a game. every attack that i've had is when i jerk my head quickly. >> williams was able to go back to the court at the end of the game to shake hands after the tar hemes defeated boston college. the father of a 13-year-old girl in virginia who disappeared and was found dead in north carolina spoke out for the first time about his daughters secret online life. >> we found out that nicole had been on social media talking to inappropriate people. for a 13-year-old girl, i thought some of the things that were said were inappropriate from my daughter. >> he told dr. phil he had a talk to his daughter about her social media use and her phone was supposed to be taken away. two virginia tech freshmen are charged in her murder. watch the interview on dr. phil starting at 9:00 before eyewitness news at 10:00.

carolinas county by county. in rowan county, deputies arrested a woman accused of shooting her boyfriend in the face. they were fighting at a home in granite quarry on sunday night. justin joyce is in a winston salem hospital recovering. in burke county investigators are looking for the driver who hit and killed a man, ronny frost was killed nearly three months ago riding his bike on old nc 18. left. they're searching for a light colored ford ranger truck. investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward. in mecklenburg county, neighbors in davidson can share their thoughts on a plan to develop 300 homes the development would go on davidson concord road where there's 96-acres of open space. later developers would add businesses on the corner of the road and robert walker drive. there will be an open house monday february 15th from 4:00

in davidson's town hall board room. you can review the plans, ask questions, and share thoughts. police were called to charlotte douglas airport this morning because of a disturbance at a gate. american airlines told us a disruptive passenger had to be removed. they wouldn't say what the person was doing that was disruptive. the flight was heading to hartford connecticut. new tonight, 2015 was a record breaking year at charlotte douglas. they had 44.9 million travelers last year. that set an all time passenger record in 2014, there were 44.3 million. it's the sixth year in a row that charlotte douglas has broken that record. the town of huntersville is growing fast. but police say crime isn't. it's actually down 10%. all new tonight, eyewitness news reporter angela hong went behind the scenes with officers to find out how they're driving problems out of area

when we found out huntersville was safe, it was appealing. >> that's why they moved here from new york two years ago. serious crimes in hurtersville are at the lowest levels since 02. >> robbery, rape, murder, breaking andn'terring, larcenies, and things like that. >> the population of hobbittersville has more than doubled since then. in 2015, serious crimes were down 10% from 2014. of the crimes larcenies were down 10%. robberies down 33%. major berry graham of the huntersville police department says this is due in part to an increased effort to reach out to the community but more recently they've added a contracted employee devoted to analyzing crime data using special software. >> to pinpoint days, times, particular areas of town that are going to have our highest probability of having crimes there. and then we would deploy our officers. >> a few months ago huntersville crime analysts

expect when you're outside. expect when you're outside. it seems everyday we hear about something that parents need to protect their children from and now add identity theft. >> 5% of calls to the identity theft resource center last year were related to children. action 9's jason stoogenke investigated the problem and found a new way you can protect your child tonight. jason? >> well alison, this new north carolina law just went into effect this year. it allows you to freeze your child's credit to block would be identity thieves. >> he's a pretty happy content baby. >> aerial just gave birth about two months ago. she's careful about her son's privacy. she asked us not to show his face. >> the way the world is these days, there's really not much protection out there. >> a recent college study found 10% of children were victims of identity theft. that's 51 times higher than adults.

old. the youngest, 5 months old. in one case, a thief ran up more than $700,000 in debt for a 16-year-old. >> you have to think, kids have nice, pristine social security numbers. >> caroline farmer is with the north carolina attorney general's office. she says in the past, you could freeze your child's credit. but only if he or she actually had a credit report. obviously most children don't. but now the new law allows you to freeze your child's credit regardless of whether or not they have a credit report. if for some reason you have to unfreeze your child's credit you can and then refreeze it. if your child is all ready a victim of identity theft, freezing is well free. for everyone else. it's $5 for each of the three major credit bureaus. make sure you freeze all three. >> it's sort of like locking down all your doors. you want to lock the front, the back, and the side door to make sure everything's safe. >> chiles knows about the new

the hospital about freezing her baby's credit. >> i wouldn't want him to go through what i went through. >> she went through it herself. >> i guess i was just very oblivious to it until, you know, until it happened to me. >> she was just 11 or 12 years old. someone stole her social security number and spent years opening accounts with sprint, duke energy, and even a home security company all in her name. she didn't find out until she applied to nursing school and her social showed multiple names associated with it. >> did you ever realize that people were running around stealing social security numbers from children? >> no. i didn't have a clue. >> she spent a year cleaning it up. investigators caught a man using her identity, able gonzales. he pled guilty. detectives told her gonzales admitted buying her social from

windchills below 0. you can get frostbite in an hour being out in something like this. if you don't uncover exposed skin. and covering is really the key. 28 in morganton. we have freezing in salisbury. normal cooler spots in the metro, shelby, lincolnton, all ready at freezing. charlotte is 36. as well as lancaster and rockingham. forecast this evening, we'll cool quickly. the charlotte area down to freezing by 7:00. well below freezing by 9:00. and as you saw, i'm forecasting lows in the upper teens tomorrow morning. when i said layer up, layering is the most effective way to fight this kind of chill and especially as i said covering up. you want to cover your head as much as you can. that's where you lose a lot of your heat, your hands, i mean you really need to dress appropriately in this kind of chill. by 9:00 a.m., we're up to the mid 20s. tomorrow's future cast, much like today. plenty of sunshine, that's not the problem. even the mountains will enjoy afternoon sun after a few days of snow showers. it's that northwest wind and the chill that continues to just not let go.

time of year, tomorrow, a step in the right direction, we'll be in the low to mid 40s. but still well below where we should be this time of year. and that doesn't take into account the wind. tomorrow's future cast, windchills still at freezing at lunch time. we at least get above 0 in the mountains. we top out around 40 in most of the metro. so with our weekend always in view, a lot of folks have plans outside this weekend have valentine's day, chances are at the very least you'll head out and do something. low 40s on saturday. plenty of sun. valentine's day itself will be very cold. if you're going out saturday night, i tell you what, temperatures bottoming out. we'll be below freezing by 7:00, 7:30, and back to the low 20s as early as 11:00. next week, we're going to talk more about it at 6:00. with vicki graf, we have the next system coming in. that's going to be a pretty decent rainmaker for us. late monday into early tuesday. the big question is, how much cold air that's now in place is still left as this moisture rolls in. it looks as if many of us are

changes over to all rain. pinpoint regional forecast, up in the high country, we'll get into the upper 20s. with the wind still blowing, windchill value, teens all day. in and around the charlotte metro, afternoon highs in the low to mid 40s. but again, plenty of sunshine, and with that wind blowing, it feels like it's in at least the mid 30s. the five-day forecast, as the next batch of cold air comes in on friday. we'll see a few clouds and more mountain snow showers. and that sets us up for that very cold weekend and the potential wintery mix early next week. wow monday doesn't look good. >> a lot going on. we have breaking news coming into the news room. a 25-year-old double murder case in caldwell county has been declared a mistrial. it was a hung jury in bill murphy's trial. jury deliberations started this morning and lasted all day. murphy was accused of killing mark and jenny sea crest back in 1990. we're reaching out to prosecutors to see what this means for the case moving forward. a lawsuit against a popular

now, from the news team that's covering the carolinas, this is channel 9 eyewitness news at 6:00. from the charlotte metro to the carolina mountains, the region is bracing for one of the coldest nights of the year, strong gust of wind pushing temperatures to dangerous levels. >> speaking of the wind, let's take a look at the windchill temperatures. right now you see charlotte feels like 24 outside. it feels like 20 in statesville. it feels like -3 in boone. thanks for joining us. i'm scott wickersham. our team of meteorologists and eyewitness news reporter dave faherty dig deeper into what is causing this dangerous cold snap and the conditions that we'll face in the morning. we begin with chief meteorologist steve udelson with coverage from severe weather center 9. >> the sun is just now setting. beautiful way to look at it is through a window. to be outside hasn't been pleasant at all. skies are clear. we lost 5 degrees after reaching 38 this afternoon.
