winter weather headed our way. i'm scott wickersham. >> and i'm erica bryant. tracking what you can expect when you head out tomorrow morning. steve. >> the cold air continues to pour in after a bit of a break. snow showers are beginning to fall again across e high country. won't amount to much. it's insult to injury. mid 20s in the mountains. many neighborhoods are below freezing like sulsbury, 34 officially uptown. look at the winds howling in the mountains. haven't picked up in the charlotte area yet. they are forecast to do so overnight and that dries down these windchill values. as cold as the mid teens, low 20s in the share lat area and up in the mountains, dangerous, life threatening windchills. as cold as 20 below zero. you can get frostbite in 20 minutes with numbers like that. snow and windchill for the mountains. a clear start to the weekend. very cold. and i'll soon let you know how long that next storm will be

>> all right, steve, tonight we have breaking news for the second time this week. a contractor installing google fiber hit a gas line cutting off heat for hundreds of families in north charlotte. >> brown is in the highland creek neighborhood where they are working to try to get the heat back on. >> erica, in the last 30 minutes, i saw two additional crews come into this neighborhood to help with those repairs and here's part of the problem. what they are trying to do is repair the gas line that was hit. you can see it roped off. now right now, it's impacting close to 300 homes. leaving some of those customers without heat tonight. officials do expect to wrap up at least part one of those repairs any minute now. then they have to go door to door to restore service to each of those households individually. now we did bring you a similar case of the same thing happening on tuesday where a third party for google fiber disrupted service. tonight, home ordinary reasons

>> for them to come in here and ruin things the way they're doing is just like there's no accountability. and that's what bathers me the most about it is. it's like they ruin something and it's no big deal to anybody else except the homeowners. >> and right now, officials with piedmont natch rat gas do not have a time line on how long it will take to restore service. they do have to go door to door. reporting live from north charlotte, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> this past summer, channel 9 uncovered the utility disruptions happened on several occasions as google and at&t are working to expand their fiber networks. wiwi brightly colored lines, they expect more gas lines to be cut across the area. and dot crews will decide tomorrow on how they will treat roads. they say treating the roads for freezing rain is different than treating for snow or sleet. any rain would wash away

down after they make a decision tomorrow, the trucks will start tackling highways and interstates first. more crews are on call if we get more than anticipated. >> we have dozens of pieces of county alone. we also have potential for 90 site. >> crews say about $24 million worth of salt has been used this year for storm preparations. that's more than half the state's budget for the year. >> the school district tells channel 9 that it is monitoring conditions before making any decisions about school on monday. ash county school students will have a half day of classes tomorrow. they are doing that to make up for days missed during the recent winter weather. we'll keep monitoring the plummeting temperatures. watch eyewitness news saturday morning starting at 6:00 a.m. for updates. >> all new tonight at 11:00, police just arrested the man

>> i want to know what was the biggest unexpected thing you hadn't planned for, and what are you most proud of that you did plan for? >> could have more than $100 million in one economic impact in charlotte. there are four cmpd staffers from the city on the trip with him as well. he estimates the taxpayer cost of that trip at around $12,000 or $13,000. kimble and his group head back on monday. >> police are looking for a robber who put a knife to a man's throat. investigators say on wednesday night, the robber cornered a worker as he was leaving the massage center on east boulevard. the victim suffered cuts on his arm and neck, but he is back at work. the people who work in and visit this community are stunned. channel 9 did a crime map. nine robberies in the last six months and 48 assaults. all new tonight at 11:00, a man from boone is in jail after

under age children online. they arrested john after they say he posted an ad on a website trying to draw in children. officers posing as an under age girl, then responded to that ad and arranged a meeting. they arrested him on the scene. he now has a court date set for march 3. stock futures are trending up tonight. the market rallied after a jump in oil prices today. the dow went up after weeks of struggle. that hi closed up more than 300. the nasdaq was up just under 70 point points. >> sibs the first of the year, the down is more than 8%. that has a big effect on your retirement accounts. it's important to remember the stock market is not an accurate reflection on how our economy is doing. unemployment is down and retail sales are up. >> the north carolina general assembly is coming up with a

to draw congressional maps before next month's primary. district 12 lines to be redrawn saying they were based on race. the general assembly announced today they formed a 36 member committee to hold a special session. if the supreme court does not make a decision by tuesday. >> days to go until the south carolina primary. these are the candidates who are leading in the polls right now. but the problem areas will be held on two separate days. the first one is for the gop on the 20th. the second one a week later for the democrats on the 27. now all new tonight at 11:00, eyewitness news reporter, elsa learned why they are being held a week apart and what it will cost you, the taxpayer, to make all this happen. >> notten is only -- it can be confusing for voters and i found it's costing taxpayers more money.

few states that will hold its democratic and republican primaries on separate days. dr. karen of winthrop says it's up to the national parties to decide when primaries are held. that involves some issue about where the candidates wanted to spend more of their time and how they wanted to invest in the states in terms of campaigning. >> she says having primaries on separate days can be confusing, which i found when talking to voters. >> we were aware that the democratic and republican primaries were on separate days? for people who wanted to vote, they have to be reminded to not also show up on the 20s. >> and it is costing south carolina taxpayers more money. according to the south carolina state election commission, it cost 25 to 30 percent more to hold primaries on two separate days.

elections said it cost me more than 28,000 to hire poll workers. if the primaries were held on one day, that number would almost be cut in half. >> i cut a hole in my pocket and let it jingle out. >> the doctor says there's one good thing about the split days. she told me it extends the amount of time south carolina can influence a national political debate. reporting live in rock hill, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> the political science professor told channel 9 that these elections are held on saturdays because they are not binding elections. she says she thinks there will be a hire voter turnout by holding them on the weekend. we reached out to the state and national parties about why they decided to hold the primaries on separate saturdays, but so far, we have not heard back. new tonight at 11:00, the sbi is investigating possible misconduct by morganton city employees.

we're asking police if the we're we're staying on top of breaking news where right now, piedmont natural gas crews are working to get the heat back on for more than 200 neighbors. piedmont saying a third party contractor working to install google fire accidentally cut a gas line at highland creek parkway. crews will have to go door to door in order to turn the gas back on once those repairs are complete. we'll continue to stay on top of the story overnight. we'll bring you the latest tomorrow morning on eyewitness news saturday morning starting at 6:00 a.m. new tonight at 11:00, thieves targeted local firefighters again. just hours after channel 9 reported break ins at the fire department, police responded to more break ins this time at the china grove fire department. >> and earlier tonight, eyewitness news reporter asked whether these cases are connected.

happen here. >> it was really in shock about it. >> around 7:00, two fireman here at the china grove fire department were ending their shift, walked outside, to find this. >> and the doors were open, glass was laying on the ground. >> those parking spaces now sit vacant, but police say thieves broke into two cars here and four others in the community. police say the suspects rummaged through those cars, took personal items and stole a gun. some vehicles were locked, others were not, but all had this. >> they all had the passenger side broken out of them, which is odd. it would only be a matter of time before we establish a definite direction. >> police worked a similar case. thieves broke into three or four cars just outside station 3 on florida avenue early in the morning. and it all happened while fireman were responding to a call. >> it's heartbreaking to know when you're sitting here doing the job to the community that

>> it could happen to anybody anywhere. >> in china grove, channel they witness news. >> right now, china grove police don't know if the two cases are connected. they have now joined forces and rowan county deputies to find the people responsible. >> we have new information tonight on a deadly shooting at an arizona high school. authorities say they are not looking for anymore suspects. police say they got a call just before 8:00 this morning about a shooting at independence high school in glendale. that is a suburb of phoenix. they say two 15-year-old students were found dead near an administrative building. we don't know anything more than that. investigators are working to find out the relationship between those two girls. >> duke energy can start removing water from coal ash ponds and pushing it into the lake to provide drinking water. the ash is intermingled with water. duke has to take it out of the pond at the river bend steam

basins into the lake. neighbors are split on whether this is a good idea. state leaders are calling the new permit the most stringent in the country. it will require routine sampling of the water that is being released into the lake. >> tonight, firefighters are trying to find the cause of this fire at a home in north charlotte. cropper 9 was over the scene earlier today. this one out. the family says even though the fire destroyed their home, they are happy everybody did make it out safely. >> bitter cold temperatures will settle in across more than 20 states this weekend from the midwest to the northeast. minnesota has seen 35 degrees below 0. think about that when you complain. new york city can break 100- year-old record if the temperatures drop below 2 degrees tomorrow. and just coming into our newsroom tonight. ash county will not have school tomorrow, we told you earlier the district was going to have tomorrow as a makeup day, but in the past five minutes, they canceled that makeup day.

nasty in the mountains. >> 20 below windchill in the mountains. that was a good call on ash county's part. in and around charlotte, the skies have cleared. still some scattered snow showers. air temperatures, single digits tomorrow. again, with windchills as low as 20 below. in the charlotte area, readings around 20. hickory, a little warmer south of town. chesterfield, but you get the idea. direct tracker over the weekend, nothing falling from the sky, that's important. we will see gusty winds tomorrow and those windchill values, yikes, here's a look at our weekend in view. sunshine, upper 30s tomorrow afternoon in spite of sunshine. sun will be filtered by increasing clouds and after one of the coldest readings this winter, 14 sunday morning will only rise to the mid 30s valentine's day afternoon. yes, there's a run tomorrow. thankfully, it's at lunchtime.

above freezing. mid to upper 30s. sunshine, pretty gusty breeze. i would dress in layers. runners, northwest wind tomorrow will continue all day long. finally we'll get sunshine back across the high country as well. really, it's the wind and that chill. look at these wind speeds up in the mountains. close to 40 miles an hour. charlotte area will see winds 10 to 15 miles per hour through a good chunk of tomorrow. and again, that's going to keep windchill values down throughout the day. in the 20s in the charlotte area. barely climbing above 0 for a time tomorrow afternoon before starting to tank again. again, that is frostbite territory in the high country. a closer look. a lot of folks will be up here phone issuely going skiing this weekend. windchill values stay belore zero, especially up high. i'm not telling you not to go, but you need to dress appropriately with some sport

conditions couldn't be better, natural snow. bases are high. neighborhood forecast for davidson, upper 30s tomorrow, plenty of sunshine. out toward lancaster. afternoon highs upper 30s. again, sunshine is not the problem, it's just the chill. saturday night and sunday, here comes the next system. gaining strength over the upper midwest. they could swing toward the carolinas. by this time sunday night, valentine's day in the metro will be sunny. some clouds increase in the afternoon. and then at night, here's our latest future cast. this is just updated. we're talking about a nuisance snow on the charlotte area. it starts as snow around daybreak and quickly change over to rain. but notice how quickly the snow totals ramp up, especially from i-40, hickory, statesville north into the mountains. big snow in the mountains, not much in the metro.

contenders records show that the 2016 bop presidential candidates are keeping quiet about their tax returns. >> donned trump, marco rubio, mitt romney offered some advice to the candidates. release your return information before the primaries and avoid tough scrutiny later. there's no legal requirement to show how much the candidates get back in their taxes. some new information on the deadly tacata air bag recall. some documents show that volkswagen leaders resisted the efforts to make those recalls. the company leaders told safety regulators that a recall was not necessary at first, but then eventually agreed. many vw car air bags are made in germany, which leaders say did not fail.
