precipitation, snow and ice gives the greatest danger in charlotte with the weather maker. a layer of snow, a coating of freezing rain on top of that snow. this all starts overnight sunday night into monday and all of us will start out with that snow. but the deal is warmer air working its way just above us, will melt a little bit of that, then refreezes on the ground on monday, by 6:00 or so. changes it into a freezing rain. that will be possible across rock hill all the way up into davidson. when you get to upper iredell county including statesville to taylorsville, morganton, that is where we'll see pretty much a steady snowfall. the top one looks to be ice, just because the snowfall may not have a lot of time to accumulate our futurecast sets the stage overnight tonight as the temperatures drop down to low teens and lower 20s. the cold will stay with us all the way through sunday as that weathermaker gets close.

the most controversial and conservative justices on the scort. widely regarded as a man of law who believed the constitution should be enforced just as men who wrote it would have done. associate justice scalia found dead of apparent natural causes at a resort in west texas. he reportedly died in his sleep on the trip. scalia was the longest serving justice on the current united states supreme court nominated by president reagan in 1986 >> getting nominated to the supreme court is a -- the culmination of a dream of course. and i'm greatly honored that the president would have such confidence in me. >> reporter: he was confirmed unanimously by the senate, became the first italian- american member of the court. he quickly became an anchor of judicial conservatism at odds with what conservatives call

>> he led the conservative movement in american law to roll back liberal activism. >> reporter: he was widely known for his high intel length, elegant writing. john roberts issued a statement calling his late colleague an extraordinary individual and jurist, admired and treasured by his colleagues. scalia leaves behind a wife and nine children. he was 79. >> north carolina governor pat mccrory released this statement. two north carolina cases are working their way to the supreme court. one on drawing congressional district lines and another on prayer in meetings. scalia's passing could directly impact the outcome of those

in washington gop leader mitch mcconnell already said president obama should not choose scalia's successor. he believes the next president should. tonight the president said he plans to nominate a successor in due time. elsa gillis speaks about how this will effect washington. charlotte memelenburg police need the public's help to catch a bank robber. police say this man walked into pnc bank on arboretum drive in south charlotte and handedle teller a note demanding money, then ran off with cash. detectives say that same man robbed this fifth third bank on pineville matthews road the morning of january 28th. police say it was a similar situation, he was armed, slipped the tellary note and took off.

call police. in just the last few minutes the six remaining republican candidates for president wrapped up their final debate before next week's primary in south carolina. ted cruz and marco rubio each defended their competing tax policy proposals. jeb bush went on the offensive accusing john kasich of encouraging obama care rather than fighting it. and donald trump and rubio both attacked bush's older brother, former president george w bush for his foreign policy and ability to keep america safe. >> it took jeb bush, if you remember at the beginning of his announcement when he announced for president, took him five days, he went back -- it was a mistake, it was a mistake. >> while donald trump was building a reality tv show my brother was building a security apparatus to keep us safe. >> but as voters we've been burned. >> over to the, they mentioned my name a couple of times. >> tonight's debate was in greenville.

in fort mills tomorrow. south carolina residents are already seeing more political signs and getting phone calls encouraging them to vote. many candidates have events planned in the state all this week despite trump's lead in the polls. the south carolina primary will be key for all candidates. >> it will be interesting to see who captures the evangelical vote and how close they get to trump. it will be interesting to see if bush is able to resurrect his campaign. >> the republican primary is the 20th, the democratic primary is the 27th. lancaster county man behind bars without bond tonight for stealing a woman's purse and hitting her multiple times in lot. police say arketus cauthem knocked the woman to the ground after stealing her purse.

whether he's connected to other recent purse snatches. many parents with kids in charlotte mecklenburg schools continue to fight against the student assignment review that could shift their kids to another school. today dozens of parents asked questions to the school board's vice chair at the ballantine priorities meeting. the superintendent says they check it every six years and address rumors to the massive busing system. >> there are no major changes in the works for busing. some parents said they still don't understand why cms leaders have said the busing changes are off the table. >> they weren't clear. we have to be concerned. >> school board members will vote on goals for the plan later this month. a major winter storm

to the public. new tonight -- brazil's president says the zika virus outbreak will not compromise the upcoming olympic games in rio de janeiro. today the country's military and hundreds of thousands of health workers were mobilized to fight the virus. brazil's president says her country will have success in fighting mosquitos that carry zika virus by the time the olympic games start in august. a winter storm watch is in effect for charlotte tomorrow night. meteorologist john ahrens pinpoints what your neighborhood will see. >> unfortunately the most dangerous kind of precipitation combo in charlotte. you start with snow, put a layer on ice on top of that. makes for hazardous driving. that will be the case monday morning and through the afternoon time. in the meantime quiet on doppler, skies are clear for now. the big turn, what we have to deal with tomorrow morning, the wind chill, i want to give you a heads up, going for church

with strong winds from time to time. it can feel like 11 in charlotte tomorrow morning. 8:00, 9:00. your planning that nice sunday walk? it's going to be very, very cold outside. it might start bright tomorrow but the clouds are quickly going to be taking over this picture. temperature 30. the clouds will lock us in with temperatures just barely above freezing in the afternoon time. if you have plans to take your sweetheart to daneer you're not going to run into winter trouble tomorrow. just getting ready for things. we'll eventually fall to 28 by 11:00. then that storm. up across the high country snow will start in the mountains by 5:00. we might get a brief burst of snow in charlotte. most likely flurries between 5:00 and 7:00. after that it settles down i'm looking more towards after midnight, into monday, that's when the big time opportunity

we have snow across the board. maybe sleet in york county and lancaster. all snow for charlotte. an icy scenario. this is not a big window for significant snow accumulation friends. i mean maybe about an inch tops. it's this guy, that's ice, that's not valentine's day, that is ice that will go on top of the thin layer of snow we'll have at 6:00 in the morning. you'll still have that freezing rain threat through noontime. this is the current forecast. we're updating constantly on facebook and twitter. just check the wsoc weather app with interactive radar to track as the system starts to knock on the door. by monday late afternoon things settle down for us. this is the latest ice accumulation here, what is good for us, you see the zero here, i got to tell you the pink colors would tell you it's going to be a very thin coating, so maybe not a 10th inch but maybe a couple hunches
