u.s. crude is trading at just about $30 a barrel now, and let's take a look at how that's affecting the dow. up 206 points now. the nasdaq is up 75. we'll be keeping an eye on this throughout the day. a fire swept through a northwest charlotte barn and killed seven dogs, two horses. this morning. now eyewitness news reporter angela hong has learned what may have led to this fire. angela. >> reporter: john, we have been here all morning and within the last 30 minutes you can see a bulldozer crew out here taking barn. we have new information, we learned a space heater used in the barn to keep the animals warm may have caused this fire. we were here shortly after 6:30 when the call came in off

we spoke with the owner off camera who said he lost two horses, a dog and six puppies. he said the animals were family pets and loved by his children. he saw the fire after he came back from dropping off his called 911. he tried to make it inside the barn but it was too late. the chickens, peacocks and other dogs outside the barn survived. channel 9 spoke with a neighbor. >> i feel sad that all those animals had to die. i feel really sad. >> reporter: no people were actually hurt in this fire. the fire marshal told channel 9 the space heater was likely flammable things nearby. an electrical inspector will be out here later on to take a look at this property, because the fire marshal noticed some of the wiring may not be up to code.

>> channel 9 let drivers know the firefighters closed oakdale road to fight this. you can sign up for those news tab. police have now upgraded the charges against a hickory man accused of shooting his girlfriend to death. james thacker faces murder charges. police say he shot his girlfriend in her stomach at her home monday. she died that night. the victim gave two statements to police in the hours before she died of her injuries. eyewitness news is gathering more information about that evidence now. we'll have a full report at 5:00. in the past hour south carolina senators began talking about how to pay to fix crumbling state roads. they've been fighting over this issue for years. they're facing a new pressure to get something done.

it's so critical now and the proposals they could make today. >> reporter: this has been a very long process here in south carolina, which includes not only dealing with south carolina's crumbling roads, but in this area problems with interstate overpasses crumbling. last year governor haley proposed a plan to raise the state gas tax by ten cents and decrease income tax by 2%. they're now looking at several plans today, one including raising the gas tax by 12 cents and possibly including an income tax decrease. some democrats are concerned an income tax cut could only affect the wealthy. that debate expected to go

from rock hill, greg suskin, eyewitness news. police officers are at gas stations with a new incentennial. in the past three months thieves stole 85 vehicles that still had keys in the ignition. today officers are rewarding any driver who shows them their car keys and they get a free drink coupon. >> they're not looking to steal the car to ship it somewhere to make a large amount of money. a lot of times it's juveniles looking to skip school for the day or do other crimes. >> officers say they have seen cars stolen from private businesses. opening statements expected to start today in the trial of a colorado woman accused of cutting an unborn baby from a

where voters in south carolina will get the chance to ask republican presidential candidates crucial questions ahead of the state's primary. cnn is hosting two town hall events. all all six of the candidates expected to attend. donald trump is hanging on to his lead three days out from the primary, with support from 38% of gop voters surveyed. ted cruz came in second at 22%. about half of the voters said they're still deciding who they'll vote for. that does not count for governor nikki haley. she's undecided but says she's not made up her mind, but has ruled out trump, which she says represents "everything a president."

>> t developing this midday, apple is vowing to fight a federal judge's order to help the fbi unlock iphones used by one of the san bernardino shooters. they say the case could have consequences affecting all cell phone users. the fbi says the phones could have crucial information. >> reporter: the fbi has been unable to access the phone for two months and the federal judge wants apple to help. a federal judge in california

cell phone used by one of the gunmen in the san bernardino terror attack that left 14 people dead. apple's ceo posted a response overnight saying the company is going to say no to the fbi and challenging the federal order. he's calling it an government overreach. he also says it could information. apple has said with the way newer iphones are engineered, enforcement. this concern all about what's known as encryption has brought the fbi director to capitol hill over the last year. he said not being able to unlock phones and encrypted messages is making it tough to catch terrorists. >> they know it's hard for us to get this information.

of charges posing as a doctor and seeing patients. police say he has been pretending to be a doctor for months now. an undercover officer handcuffed the 18-year-old tuesday when he started giving her a physical exam at his practice. today we're asking police for more information as they search for the robber who targeted a popular south end restaurant. one worker at phat burrito said he saw the robber pull a gun on the manager. no one was hurt. police have not released a suspect description. police are searching for the gunman who shot a man three times in northwest charlotte early this morning near lasalle and beattie's ford at a mcdonald's. a former hotel operator charged in the death of three people may not go to trial.

took the mother and baby to get checked out, leaving the two roommates with quite a story. >> as soon as we stepped back outside, thumbs, text, done. >> south carolina school district is now considering changing bus routes after 17 children were stuck on a broken bus for hours monday. the students in sumter had no access to food, water or bathrooms. some of them didn't even get home until almost 9:00 at night. parents say no one called them, despite repeated calls to transportation officials. >> i don't know if the bus driver got kidnaped, you don't know. got in a bad accident. couldn't get an answer from nobody. so sad. >> the superintendent says this is at least the tenth time that bus has broken down. he says the district is stuck with whatever the state gives it. the cold winter is cutting into construction of new homes. the commerce department said today that housing starts fell 4% last month to 1.1 million homes.
