question just yet. >> news that the mumps has been linked to the lowe's customer support center spread quickly through mooresville today. many here know someone that works there. >> i hate they won't get it and take it to the kids. >> today health workers told us they're working with lowe's to find any employees who may have been exposed to the disease. they're encouraging employees to get vaccinated and say those with symptoms shouldn't come to work. >> absolutely not. it's crucial they stay home from work. stay away from others. that helps mitigate the spread. we recommend they contact their physician beforehand. don't just show up at an urgent care. make sure they know when you get there that you think you may be a possible case. and they'll take the proper precautions to make sure this doesn't spread. >> health workers are investigated six other cases but wouldn't say if those are linked to lowe's as well. across the charlotte area, there's only one other confirmed case in mecklenburg

workers say test results on a potential case came back negative. state health workers say they're keeping a close eye on all reported cases. >> as of right now, we have had 11 cases reported total. so three of those we're counting at confirmed. eight of them are probable. >> reporter: a spokesperson for lowe's said two messages have been sent to employees about the out break. and she said we've taken additional housekeeping steps at the customer support center, including extra sanitizing and adding more hand sanitizer stations on campus. and still workers say they expect those cases to grow as health officials across the area get out and investigate some of those potential cases. reporting live in mooresville tonight, tina terry, channel 9 eyewitness news. thank you tina. coming up new tonight at 10:00 and 11:00, we're learning more about the challenges of stopping the spread of the mumps. why it could be weeks before we know the full scope of its impact.

not just because of that. it was the last day actually to register for the primary that's coming up in march. but many of the people who came in here today don't know which congressional district they'll vote in or for that matter who will be on the ballot. >> that will be the lancaster highway area right down there. >> michael vickerson showed us how the map would split mecklenburg county between two congressional districts. that map also shows just how far away from her proposed district congresswoman alma adams all ready lives. that has local democratics considering a run for her seat. >> my phone has been ringing off the hook. >> malcolm graham easily beat adams two years ago. >> would you be a candidate?

>> i think it really opens up a lot of options for a lot of people. >> former city councilman michael barnes also sounds like he might be one of those people. >> it's a very attractive opportunity, potential opportunity for someone who's served as long as i did. >> there could even be some republicans taking a shot at what's been a solidly democratic district. former councilman edward peacock said putting north mecklenburg in the 12th district could attract a republican candidate. but he's not interested. at least not now. >> i've got to look at the map. but as of now, i'm not running for office. >> so everybody's waiting to see whether the courts will sign off on that new map that the legislature approved or whether they'll go back to the old one. they started sending out ballots all ready for the primary coming up in four weeks. live in midtown, mark becker, channel 9 eyewitness news. all right mark. thank you. republicans are holing out hope

will stay the appeal court order that called for these new maps. that would change everything back. the controversial maps will be used and the congressional primaries won't be moved to june if that happens. drivers are still dealing with back-ups after a tractor trailer over turned. we brought live pictures of the southbound lanes from chopper 9 for the past hour. nobody was hurt. but still very slow going on 85 tonight. on monday night, charlotte city leaders will take up one of the most contentious issues council has ever faced. we've been telling you about the ordinance that would ban discrimination against the lgbt community in various places including public restrooms and locker rooms. mayor jennifer roberts told us she's heard from several big corporations including apple that they will not expand in charlotte if the city is not inclusive. now the opponents on council don't think that that's a reason to make the protections law.

we're not discriminating against people for reasons that have nothing to do with their ability to work. >> this is more about acceptance than it is solving a problem. >> 144 speakers are signed up to give their opinions about this ordinance before city leaders vote on it on monday. we've been checking in with police over the past hour and right now they're still looking for a man who shot and kimed a woman outside of a motel in gastonia. she was gunned down at the red carpet inn near 85 and highway 321. witnesses tell us they saw a man run from the scene and get into a silver hatch back with another woman and man inside that car. a fire at this south end apartment building caused up to $35,000 in damage today. this happened on will more drive off south trion around 9:00 this morning. firefighters found smoke pouring out of the home, two rooms were damaged. they tell us one person was inside when it started but they were able to get out and call

say the pilot who died when his plane crashed in union county did report engine problems before the aircraft wept down. >> and eyewitness news has been out there on the scene near new salem road in marshville all day gathering information. reporting ken lemon joins us live tonight with more from the investigators and the neighbors. ken? >> reporter: it looks like the plane fell straight out of the sky and landed between the trees. there are very few tree tops that are clipped or broken. if the pilot could have veered over another 20-yards he may have had a chance of landing the plane on this grassy now muddy road here that stretches out like a run way. the single engine plane landed nose down. the propellers were bent by the hard earth. the tail came to rest against a tree several feet off the ground. it fell last night about 60- yards away from terry brooks back door.

it was almost like a small explosion. >> the trees and a hill muffled the sound of the crash just after sunset. he didn't realize what happened until emergency crews showed up. >> it's tragic. >> jim cook was an experienced pilot who used to fly for richard childress racing. he often flew the race team to and from daytona. he headed back to his home in lexington. this is his flight plan. something went wrong close to the north carolina state line. you can see where the plane took an awkward turn off course. cook radioed a control tower and told the air traffic controller he had engine trouble, he planned to change course and land at the airport in monroe. the plane went down 10.5 miles from the airport. jim cook died. >> i felt very sorry for whomever it happened to out there. >> this afternoon, the ntsb checked out the plane looking for any obvious signs that might explain what caused the

experienced pilot off guard. they will have to examine the black box to get a better understanding. the federal team that came out here could not talk to us. but we learned that they will analyze items taken from that plane. i'll take you to a processing center to get a better look at it tomorrow morning. a salvage crew will come out and haul jim cook's plane away. ken lemon, channel 9 eyewitness news. tonight marks two years since someone shot and killed a hunterville teenager outside of a friend's apartment. police have followed several leads in peter jordan's hurt. suspect. they're offering a 10,000- dollar reward for answers. tomorrow jordan's family will hold a walk for justice and urge people to come forward what might have information. all new tonight at 6:00. the owner of the nc state fair ride that hurt several people in 2013 is heading to jail.

of justice today and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and a 22,000-dollar fine. five people were injured by the vortex ride when it started up unexpectedly as people were trying to get off the ride. investigators said that a safety mechanism designed to keep the ride from moving was disabled. last summer the operator pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. in december, new safety laws for fair rides went into effect in north carolina. one creates a penalty for anyone who tampers with a safety device on a ride. north lake mall is preparing to make a 50 million- dollar investment to bring you more shopping, dining, and entertainment options. the sprawling mall in north charlotte recently bought up a neighboring plot of land. it plans to build a 200,000 square foot building it's calling a lifestyle component. north lake mall told us they're hoping to have the project's summer. hundreds of mourners paid tribute to supreme court

the san bernardino terrorist's iphone a federal judge is ordering apple to do that. but the tech giant is fighting this. >> a few hours ago the justice department filed a motion to force apple to comply. new tonight, action 9 investigator jason stoogenke spoke one on one with u.s. senator richard burr, the chair of the central intelligence committee. >> he demanded apple cooperate with the fbi and help federal agents get inside that smart phone. senator richard burr calls it a charade and says it's gone on long enough. a judge ruled apple has to cooperate with the fbi, so it should. >> why would apple be different than any other business. federal agents say syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik destroyed a lot of possible evidence involving the

but they found farook's iphone and they want to search it. san bernardino county where farook worked owns the fun and agreed to the search. but federal agents say they can't get into it. and a federal court ordered apple to unlock it. but apple refuses citing privacy reasons. it posted a message saying the government is asking us to hack our own users. >> do you have a concern that if we use it in this case we'll use it for all sorts of cases. and your privacy on your phone, my privacy on my phone will be jeopardized. >> i am not concerned about that. >> senator burr says he doesn't want the government to have unlimited access to smart phones but if the government needs help and a court orders it, companies should have to retrieve data for investigators. >> i don't want the government to hold a key. i don't want them to know what door is there.

manufacturer to figure out. i just want them to respond to a legitimate legal court order. now senator burr tells me he would like to see the obama administration and technology industry come together and have some sort of voluntary agreement on how to handle these cases moving forward. he says if that doesn't happen, he's prepared to submit a bill that would compel companies to comply. jason stoogenke, channel 9 eyewitness news. a mountain man who police say was on the run from south carolina authorities is locked up tonight on child porn charges. brian is charged with five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. gaston county investigators worked with the south carolina ag's office to make the arrest. they began building their case against him in 2015. a former town administrator is accused of padding his paycheck with city money. now the mayor is asking auditors to investigate.

after employees discovered payroll irregularities. he forged a signature to get paid 400 hours of sick time. today was the final day of work for 1200 people at two local truck manufacturing plants. 550 people at the plant in rowan county and several hundred at the facility in mount holly were told they were being cut. the layoffs are drinked to a drop in demand. workers are being paid through april. >> outside today, it felt nice, but the real warmth is yet to come. >> we warmed to the upper 50s this afternoon in the charlotte area. not bad for mid february. but when you consider what's to the west, aha, this is a taste of spring. you know it's warm when chicago is warmer than the charlotte area. we'll get a taste of that this weekend. but the trade off, more warmth, more clouds. early warning doppler 9 shows

sun up a little after sen o'clock. by 10:00, we warm to 50. tomorrow's future cast, 56 is the average high. we'll be there and then some. everywhere east of the mountains, as early as lunch time. and then rise into the 60s tomorrow afternoon. a taste of early spring. make your outdoor plans now. now we'll see the cloud cover thickening up. and in the mountains we'll see a slightly better chance of showers. about a 30% to 40% chance. especially by the tennessee line. mainly tomorrow afternoon .. your neighborhood forecast, kings mountain, a great place to do hiking. mid 50s by lunch time, about 60 degrees by this time tomorrow evening. and out toward chesterfield, in the midlands of south carolina, we're going to warm into the mid to upper 60s. a pretty decent vail of high clouds. little chance for rain. the high country this weekend, weather looks good. you'll be dealing with showers, nothing terribly heavy. 50s saturday and sunday.
