over night we learned a unc student died in a car crash in virginia. 19-year-old austin seen here in a green shirt died late thursday night on route 13 in northern virginia. he was headed to washington d.c. with friends in a vehicle and a car was hit by a tractor trailer we're told the impact killed him. rainy was the school basketball manager, our thoughts and prayers are with them. polls will decide who they think should be the nominee? the latest poll shows it is a close primary for donald trump and ted cruz, right now trump has 28% of likely republican voters and cruz is close with 23%. florida senator rubio is third with 13% why jeb bush has 13%.

a new cnn poll shows the gap is narrowing going into the south carolina primary on the democrat side. hillary clinton is up, bernie sanders polling at 32%. the primary is next weekend february 27th. the u.s. supreme court denied a stay in north carolina's redistricting case, the supreme court's decision means that the new map passed by legislatures yesterday will be used in the primary election. it upholds the decision to move the congressional primary from march 15th to june 7th. channel 9 was in raleigh for those last minute changes which were made after a court ruled the old maps were bias and constitutional, impacts

federal regulators say michigan officials aren't doing enough to fix the problem that led to water contamination in the city's drinking water system. the epa sent a letter yesterday saying flint doesn't have enough qualified personnel to ensure the city's water system can meet federal regulations also added the city and state need to develop a plan for littling corrosion for the pipes, corroded pipes caused the water to become contaminated. there are several muchs cases some links to a morrisville company, the challenges officials are facing as they try to stop the cases from increasing. a driver crashed through an intersection leafing debris and downs power lines and traffic signals laying in the middle of the road. the surveillance video that shows that crash all on camera. hoverboards were a very popular holiday item for many people, new this morning the

we're starting out in the mid-40s, up in the 50s in some area expecting a spring-like day across the charlotte metro area we'll have an update in just a bit. a memorial service will be held next week for a new york student who died during an alleged hazing incident. allegations surfaced saying bradley doily's death may be related to hazing. doily may have pledged the alpha incident took place at an office campus location, he was a guard for the buffalo team and his team played last night. would be very upset if these guys didn't compete with their hearts tonight giving everything we had. a moment of silence was

travelers in the u.s. will no longer be screened for ebola, they've been checking passengers at 5 hub airports since the 2014 ebola outbreak. that screening caused taxpayers $119 million never identified anyone with the disease however travel groups say that it was all worth giving people peace of mind. >> we think the white house had a great smart tailored strategy that most importantly avoided over reaction. >> homeland security tells us that 42,000 passengers to the u.s. were screened for ebola. stsa agents seized two guns at charlotte's airport those guns were found within 10 minutes of each other thursday at different checkpoints one was a glock 42 handgun, the other a smith and wessen caliber. we are reaching out to find out if they arrested those gun owners. this has become an unsettling trend at the airport this month alone police say there have

guns to the airport. the most high profile case happened next week when the former chairman of the unc board of governors was caught at airport security, he told our cameras it was a mistake. the owner of the north carolina state fair ride that critically hurt several people in 2013 is now in jail. yesterday he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and sentenced to 30 days in jail plus a $22,000 fine. 5 people were hurt by the vortex ride when it started up unexpectedly as people were trying to get off. investigators determined a safety mechanism designed to keep the ride from moving had been disabledded. last summer the operator pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon. we are turning to weather which really looks like it is going to be perfect for getting out and about today. you'll want to take advantage of this spring-like weather, we're going to stay cloudy throughout the day and see the clouds from our lake
