lots of fog this morning, but we're starting off prett >> thank you for joining us. i'm brittany harper. >> within the past hour, a dense fog advisory that goes until 10:00. that in clouds charlotte and points northward. it is tough to see in some areas this morning. visibilities are less than a mile. if you're venturing out on the roads, take it slow and keep enough distance between you and the car in front of you. that fog will start to lift as we head toward 9:00, 10:00. we'll keep the clouds around and not as much sunshine. highs in the upper 60s. the threat for a few showers. i'll tell you when they will arrive coming up. a shooting injured one person in north charlotte.

a parking lot around 11:20 last night. gunfire was exchanged between two different cars. one person was shot in the arm but police are not sure of their condition this morning. we're asking if they have any suspects. also the homeowners dog woke them up and helped them escape a fire at this home. officials say an electrical miss function cause the the fire. crews responded around 12:45 and found smoke coming from the home and a fire in the kitchen. crews extinguished the fire in about ten minutes. by then it had caused about $10,000 in damage. new this morning, while donald trump took the primary, we now know who took a very close second. trump won 32.5% of the vote with 100% of precincts reporting. overnight the associated press

out ted cruz by less than .2 of 1 percentage point. rubio had 22.5% and cruz has a close 22.3% of the vote. that is the difference of about 1,000 votes. we will not officially know the results until the state's formal confirm nation this saturday. >> >> jeb bush is suspending this campaign for president. he finished a distant fourth, 14th behind ted cruz. a very large crowd formed to celebrate the primary win. despite polls showing his lead narrowing, the celebrity businessman really coasted through south carolina. the crowd cheered very loudly when trump's family took the stage around 9:00 and he thanked the state of south carolina and took a break from the insults and even

volunteers all over the country continue to defy the pundits and produce extra ordinary results. >> each acknowledged jeb bush decision to suspend his campaign and they called him a great public servant. they expected the turnout to be a record. even though the race has been called, the york county board of elections had along overnight as they tried finalizing those results. polling places across south carolina were busy all day full oven theus was stick voters ready to cast their ballots. >> we want to get our voice heard. it seems like that there has been a lot of interest with this primary and that is why we're seeing a higher turnout. >> this has been a divisive

>> s police have a suspect in custody in a shooting rampage that killed seven people including an eight-year-old. our abc affiliate in kalamazoo michigan says the suspect's name is dalton. it appears the shooting were random. it began at some town homes where a woman was shot several times and in serious condition right now. about three hours later, police were called to a car dealership. there they found a father and son dead and a third person in critical condition. then they were called to a cracker barrel restaurant where five were killed including an 8- year-old and 14-year-old. we'll monitor this closely and bring updates throughout the morning. a shooting there last night. police are still looking for the two alleged shooters this morning. they say the men fired several shots inside the mall around 7:00 last night.

arguing and say they to have descriptions from surveillance video. officers quickly evacuated the mall and witnesses told police the shots were fired into the air. no one thankfully was injured. investigators are trying to figure out if the incident was gang related. time is 6:08. we're two days away from board members voting on goals for their student assignment project. parents discussing how to handle diversity and high poverty schools in cms. >> they will have two more opportunity tis to discuss the project. 3:00 johnson c smith university. residents of district 2 are invited to the conversation expected to last about an hour. the second conversation begins at 6:30 tonight. that runs through 8:00 tonight. mecklenburg county

our partners say william o'brien hill is charged with second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. police reports say hill used a handgun to shoot blake on january 23rd. he was shot multiple times in the r parking lot. he died the next morning. hill is in the gaston county jail this morning. we're asking police if hill and blake knew each other. at the time of his arrest yesterday, hill was found with a handgun. he was previously charged with possession of a firearm by a felon in 2007. he pleaded guilty to the crime the following year and was sentenced to 13 to 16 months in prison. >> >> clouds from yesterday are going to stick around today. meteorologist vicki graf has an update and the fog advisory. >> that is right brittany. we're under a dense fog

we're in the upper 40s to lower 5 oz. we're going to warm up quickly. we're under cloudy skies right now tracking the threat for showers out to the west. as those showers approach later today, some neighborhoods will see the threat for rain. we are going to deal with morning fog so be aware of that until 9:00, 10:00. that is when the dense fog advisories expire. we'll keep the threat for showers later today. not everybody will see the rain. upper 60s today, but i'm tracking more unsettled weather this week. i'll pinpoint when you can see heavier downpours in your neighborhood. charlotte is seeing a number of new apartment building being bit. that could give you evicted from that new place. >> >> thousands will be here for the c i wa basketball tournament.

mazola makes it better. experts are in investigating the shooting of two new york city police officers. the officers were shot yesterday morning while responding to reports of gunfire in brock lynn. eight officers were chasing a suspect. that is when officials say the suspect jamal opened fire on police. >> these are very dedicated officers who were out there protecting us and thank god they had some of the things they needed to keep them safe.

they believe he may have extremist ties. the two officers are expected to make a full recovery. he was shot and is in critical condition this morning. thousand us gathered to say good-bye to the longest serving supreme court justice justice antonin scalia. his funeral was held yesterday. one of his nine children paul is a catholic priest and he led the service. he said his dad loved god, country and family. >> the deeper he went in his catholic faith, the better a citizen and public servant he became. >> joe biden, dick cheney, members of conference and all eight sitting justices of the supreme court were at the funeral. white house officials say president barack obama is liking into possible replaces for him. the binder you see him holding includes information about potential candidates including their careers, records and

republicans are threatening to block the president's nominee. they say the next president should choose scalia's replacement. investigators are treating a fire in missouri a homicide. four people died in the fire including a three month old boy. this shows the damage there. that home completely destroyed. some neighbors heard an explosion. a preliminary investigation shows there are suspicious situations around the home and the deaths. they have not been able to enter the home so far, but they say there could be more victims. >> this helicopter crash in hawaii, the pilot told air traffic control "i think i am going down." here is a clip of that audio just after the crash. >> the helicopter crashed near

center on thursday. crewed removed it from the water yesterday. the five people on board including a canadian family of four, they survived that crash. but a teen-age boy is still in critical condition this morning. navy officials say the helicopter belongs to the tour company genesis aviation. while we're still warm, this morning is a different picture with all that fog out there. >> we're starting with dense fog across the area. as a result we have dense fog advisories. if you're heading out early, just take it slow on the roads. it is going to be hard to see especially in the low-lying areas. visibilities near zero in some spots. difficulties morning. that will start to lift by around 9:00 or 10:00. we're starting off with some fog, clouds a mild start. nothing right now as far as rain.

throughout the afternoon. we're in the upper 40s right now here in charlotte. 50 rock hill. 52 boone and 46 statesville. we'll hold onto that fog through 9:00. upper 60s later today. i'm tracking showers on the way. you can see some starting to pop up out to the west across tennessee. some of that will head this way but we're starting to enter into an unsettled weather pattern by midweek, there could be heavy rainfall. the mountains could see showers through lunchtime. it is not going to be heavy rain here, won't last long but keep your eyes to the sky and download our weather app so you can track the showers as they start to move through.

mostly cloudy skies but even with the clouds it will be warmer. we made it to 61 degrees yesterday here in charlotte but it will be warmer than that today. cloudy, but near 70 degrees there later today. a few stray showers possible through the afternoon. tomorrow a cloudy start to the day. through the afternoon tracking some rain and this time it will move in from the south and then lift north ward. by 5:00, 6:00, could be wet roads. monday and tuesday could have heavy rain. your commute tomorrow, cloudy and mild. highs for tomorrow in the upper 50s to low 60s with a chance for some showers by the afternoon. heading towards tuesday and wednesday, that is when we could sti our best chance for rain as you can see from our five-day forecast. i'll break that town and tell you when we will see downpours in your neighborhood, but once

temperatures are back in the 50s the we'll have to wait until thursday before we see the sunshine returning. >> at least is comes back in time for the tournament this weekend. >> yes. keep your wsoc weather app handy too. 6:20. one company is behind a product that some are calling a game changer for their trips to the supermarket. parts with children with special needs will make it easier. stephanie maxwell found out how it is coming together. >> reporter: this is a true labor of love made in newton. workers are scrambling to produce 1800 shopping carts for target stores but built to carry not just groceries but people with special needs. she can't walk. her mother came up with the idea eight years ago.

it was on a napkin at dinner. >> she said i am pulling a shopping cart and wheelchair, you say how do you do that? >> reporter: she took her invention to the largest shopping cart manufacturer in america and the first was made in 2013. it is not just for children. it will seat anyone up to 250 pounds. >> we needed to have it hold a special needs child adult. the first cart went to stores in newton including this one at the iga. they are now in stores in canada and australia too. she remembers the first time she saw one at her local super market. >> i would dream about and talk to the store managers about and when i finally saw it, it was like a double-take. >> reporter: she said this is a game changer because it

nd looking ahead to stories channel 9 will be covering this week, a local man trying to snuggle guns to west africa will be in court. he will be in court tuesday for an arraignment. an in don't said he bought 63 guns and 3500 rounds of ammunition, then traveled from charlotte to ghana. he hid more weapons and ammo inside a washer and drier and tried to ship those machines to ghana. he bought guns online and they only handled the paperwork. he said he found it odd he bought multiple types of the same gun. his father thought he went there to visit his girlfriend and their child. the weather. we're looking for a little bit of rain.

good morning. i'm brittany johnson. >> it is going to be a warm day here across the carolinas but we have to get through some fog first. we have dense fog advisories from charlotte north ward that goes until 10:00. visibilities have been limited to near zero so if you're headed out to church early on, take it slow on the roads especially the back roads, side roads where fog could pee more of a problem. as that lifts by mid morning we'll warm up. it will be cloudy, however we'll make it into the upper 60s. some spots close to 70 degrees. i'm tracking a slight chance for showers later today. i'll let you know when rain could arrive. thousands will be in uptown charlotte for the tournament. eyewitness news reporter learned more about the security this week. >> reporter: it will bring in

in recent years that has included a number of events after the games were played, some marked by violence. >> ciwa, is this really going on? it is mind blowing. >> reporter: all the signs point to another big weekend in charlotte. the annual tip-off for college basketball ciwa tournament, an event that brings in millions for the city and will draw in more than 100,000 fans. >> it is usually flooded with people. >> reporter: the event will bring an increase in security as well. i spoke with the supervisor for a private company off camera who said they will have even more officers on duty surrounding the whole site time warner cable arena. >> i do come out to have fun. >> reporter: they made five arrests last year and responded to a shooting at an afterparty

in 2013 it came to a violent end after a shooting at an uptown hotel left fans scrambling for safety. the year before it was an extraordinary event and made 21 arrests over the weekend. fans say safety is not an issue. >> not really. people usually act like they have some sense, but -- no people come out to have fun. >> reporter: i reached out to see if any additional security measures would be put in place for the weekend, but have not gotten a response. last year several people complained about a service charge applied to their bill at the ritz-carlton at the ciwa. they came to an agreement saying along with refunding customers money, the ritz would

scholarship fund. they are investigating what started this fire. you can see the damage right there near the rock barn golf and country club last night. three fire departments responded and they were able to contain the fire to one room. it started outside and spread to the roof of the con over club. donald trump took the south carolina republican primary yesterday while hillary clinton pulled off a crucial win in nevada's democratic caucuses. in both states there were really long lines to vote. ted cruz and marco rubio had strong performances as they battled for second place. cnn said rubio came in second with a difference of two tents tenths of a point. jeb bush called it quits. bernie sanders is not dropping

maps approved by state lawmakers friday. a panel of judges ruled the old maps were racially biased and unconstitutional. that forced state lawmakers to redraw district lines. the redrawn maps mostly impact district 12 which is a big part of the mecklenburg county. that is 100 miles away from where alma adams lives. >> it is just more people. it doesn't mean that i am going to give any less attention. it will be more attention. the focus will be strictly on the 12th district wherever it is. >> friday night we told you the supreme court refused to issue a stay in this case. in addition to the new maps, state lawmakers voted to move the congressional primary from march to june. former panthers wide receiver steve smith returned to charlotte to help families dealing with domestic violence.

bowling event strike out violence yesterday. families bowled at ten parke lanes in charlotte for resources for victims. >> we're involved with families. we're affecting families and helping families, so we want to have a family atmosphere to do it. it is more as adults we want our kids to find their wear to serve. >> one in four women will be impacted by domestic violence during their lifetime. later this week, people in belmont will have a chance to meet their new police chief thursday to get to know the community. he started on the job earlier this month. you may remember he wants to help the apartment move on from a really rough year. after that investigation, the former chief charlie franklin

i' good sunday morning. at 6:40 we're starting off with cloudy skies and dealing with some dense fog across the area. charlotte is under a dense fog advisory through 10:00 and visibilities are limited throughout most of the area especially north of the charlotte. that goes until 9:00, 10:00 this morning. if you're fog for a walk or jog early on, be careful. the fog willits and we'll be stuck under cloudy skies for most of the day. it is a warm start, we're in the upper 40s to low 50s right now. don't have to worry about the heavy layers. highs today in the upper 60s but we could deal with showers.

new this morning, former subway spokesman jared fogle es hoping to get a reduce the prison sentence. he never abused children and the prostitutes were near the age of adulthood. he was charged with 15 years in prison after he pleaded guilty. federal prosecutors have requested a sentence of 12 1/2 years. apple says the fbi missed a big opportunity to learn more about one of the san bernardino shooters. apple executives say investigators missed that chance with farook's icloud account. the password was changed hours after the shooting. that prevented an icloud backup that could that revealed further information. friday, san bernardino county said that it reset the

request. richard bur said he doesn't want the government to have unlimited access but if a court orders it, companies should have to give that data to investigators. he said he doesn't want the government to hold a permanent key and he would leave it up to out. tomorrow they will look at making improvements along i-85. they report the n cdot began the second phase of widening i- 85 to the rowan county line. city council reached out to dot crews about embellishing bridge structures, gateway signs as part of the widening project. tomorrow more than 100 ordinance.

it would ban discrimination of the lgbt community in various places, women's restrooms and they think they can pass the vote this time around. turnout charlotte a group will hold a news conference on the issue tomorrow morning and the group don't do it charlotte which opposes the legislation is mapping a rally in front of the government center tomorrow. they expect more than 1,000 people to attend. just take a look at this. this is video where peopop are trapped in elk city. this major landslide, look at all that mud. that is leaving them with no way in and no one out of the town. thursday's landslide left 15- tons of debris including rocks and trees across highway 14. it is not clear when that highway will reopen. the biggest issue for most of us this morning is the fog on your way to church. >> dense fog advisories that

it is tough to see especially on some of the back road the and side roads. take it slow if you're driving this morning. you can see the clouds, a little fog. we're try for now, but that could change later today. zooming out you can see this unsettled weather out to the west. that will push off to the east and that will bring us a slight chance for showers later today, maybe even a rumble of thunder. a warm start already in the 40s and 5 os. you don't have to worry about the heavy layers early on. once the fog lifts shortly after 9:00, that will help to speed up the warming process so midday, 65 dough gross and highs today in the upper 60s. it will stay cloudy so it might not feel as warm thanks to the clouds. it will be breezy, as well through the afternoon. fog early on there.

code enforcement which found eight code violations and gave lake arbor one month to fix them and told the complex it is illegal to charge white in the meantime. >> it is unlawful for the owner to collect rent. >> reporter: white says and they confirmed since months went by and the complex still hasn't fixed the problems and racked up $2,500 in fines from code enforcement between may and last month. white thought legally she could stop paying rent and she did. >> it is still an open case. >> reporter: cold enforcement mike jenkins says the law is confusing. just because the landlord can't collect rent doesn't mean you don't have to pay rent. >> that was there for the landlords to put them on notice that they have these certain violations that were serious. tenants read it's like most people would read it. i don't have to pay rent. that is not the idea.

7:00. we're at 50 degrees in the charlotte area. good morning. i'm brittany johnson. vicki graf is here for more on the foggy conditions and low visibility. >> we do have some dense fog advisories that go until 10:00 from charlotte to the i-4o corridor. if you're heading out early, take it slow on the roads. this is vision bitties. they just updated. where you see it's less than a mile, that is where the problem spots are so from statesville, salisbury and shelby right now, it is tough to see. take it slow. through around 9:00, 10:00, the fog starts to lift. it is a warm start. upper 40s to low 50s. highs for today in the upper 60s but we're tracking a threat for showers. i'll track when they arrive coming up. >> >> police are investigating a shooting that injured one person in north charlotte.
