7:00. we're at 50 degrees in the charlotte area. good morning. i'm brittany johnson. vicki graf is here for more on the foggy conditions and low visibility. >> we do have some dense fog advisories that go until 10:00 from charlotte to the i-4o corridor. if you're heading out early, take it slow on the roads. this is vision bitties. they just updated. where you see it's less than a mile, that is where the problem spots are so from statesville, salisbury and shelby right now, it is tough to see. take it slow. through around 9:00, 10:00, the fog starts to lift. it is a warm start. upper 40s to low 50s. highs for today in the upper 60s but we're tracking a threat for showers. i'll track when they arrive coming up. >> >> police are investigating a shooting that injured one person in north charlotte.

a parking lot on north graham street around 11:20 last night. gunfire was exchanged between two cars and one person was shot in the arm. police still are not sure of their condition this morning. we're asking if police have any suspects. also breaking overnight, the homeowners' dog from this home, they woke up the homeowner and helped them escape a fire at this gastonia house. officials say an electrical malfunction in the home's heating system caused the fire. crews responded around 12:45 this morning. they found smoke coming from the home and a fire in the kitchen. crews put out the fire in about ten minutes but by then it cost $10,000 in damage. new this morning, while donald trump took the south carolina republican primary, we now know who finished a close second trump won 32.5% of the vote

overnight the associated press said marco rubio edged out ted cruz by less than .2 of 1 percentage point. that is close. cnn lists marco rubio with 22.5% while cruz has a close 22.3% of the vote. that is a difference of about 1,000 votes. we won't know the results until the confirmation this saturday. >> >> now just hours after the polls closed, jeb bush announces he is suspended his campaign. he finished a distant fourth, 14% behind third place ted cruz. channel 9 watt there as a large crowd formed to celebrate the primary win. despite polls showing his lead was narrowing, he coasted through south carolina. the crowd cheered loudly when trump's family took the stage

clinton pulled off a crucial win yesterday in nevada. she urged out bernie sanders 52.7% to his 47 point 2%. the two were in a dead heat in the days leading up to the voting. >> some may have doubted us, but we never doubted each other. >> very aggressive, effective campaign and i applaud them for their efforts. sanders trounced clinton in the new hampshire primary while clinton edged out a razor-thin victory in the iowa caucuses. this saturday's primary in south carolina, bernie sanders has events planned for today in greenville while hillary clinton will be in the state tuesday. >> >> channel 9 is your source for 2016 presidential coverage. we have a full recap of the south carolina republican primary and the information you need to know looking a head to

find it on our website at wsoctv.com as well as on our social media pages. >> >> breaking this morning, police have a suspect in custody in a shooting rampage that killed six people including an eight-year-old. in the last hour, our abc affiliate in kalamazoo, michigan says it is jason dalton. all over this began around 6:00 last night. police say that it appears the shootings were random. it began at some town homes where a woman was shot several times. she is in serious condition right now. about three hours later, police were called to a car dealership. there they found a father and son dead and a third person in critical condition. police were then called to a cracker barrel restaurant where five people were killed including that eight-year-old. they say a 14-year-old girl is actually alive but in very serious condition. officials are getting ready to hold a press conference right now. we will bring you the latest developments from that as soon

a mall will reopen at noon today following a shooting there last night. police are still looking for the two alleged shooters this morning. they say the men fired several shots inside the mall around 7:00 last night. they believe the two were arguing and say they to have descriptions from surveillance video. officers quickly evacuated the mall. witnesses told police those shots were fired into the air. thankfully, no one was international joined. investigators atracking to figure out if the incident is gang related. we're two days away from the board members voting on goals. parents have been crowding forums across the city discussing how to handle differ verse ty in high poverty schools in cms. there will be two more opportunities.

he recovers from a back injury. instead brian vickers will be in his spot. 20million are expected to watch today's race that starts at 1:00. a deadly shooting at a motel in january. our partners at the gazette say william o'brien hill is charged with second degree murder and possession of a fire arm by a felon. police reports say hill used a gun to shoot blake on january 23rd. he was found shot multiple times in the parking lot. he died the next morning. hill is now in the gaston county jail and we're asking police if hill and blake new eve other. >> at the time of his arrest yesterday, hill was found with a handgun. he was previously charged back in 2007 and he pleaded guilty to the crime the following year and was sentenced to 13 to 16 months in prison.

nd new this morning, fb pie terrorism experts are investigating the shooting of two new york city police officers. the officers were shot yesterday morning while responding to reports of gunfire in brooklyn. officials say that eight officers were chasing a suspect who stopped after hitting a patrol car and officials say

police. these were very -- are very dedicated officers who were there out protecting us. thank god they had some of the things to keep them safe. fbi terrorism agents feel he has extremist ties. the two officers are expected to make a full recovery. he is in critical condition this morning. thousands gathered to say good-bye to the longest serving supreme court justice justice antonin scalia. his funeral was held yesterday in d.c. paul is a catholic priest and he led the service. paul said his dad loved god, his country and family. the deeper he went in his catholic faith, the better a citizen and public servant he became. >> joe biden, dick cheney, members of congress and all eight sitting justices of the supreme court were among those at the funeral.

barack obama is starting to look into possible replacements for scalia. the binder right there that he is carrying is going to help him. the includes information on candidates, their careers, records and experience. republicans are threatening to block the president's nominee. they say the next president should choose scalia's replacement. investigators are treating a fire in michigan a homicide. four people died in the fire including a three month old boy. this is video. you can see right there the extent of that damage. some neighbors reported hearing an explosion. officials say the preliminary explanation shows there was suspicious activity around the home and deaths. they have not been able to enter the home so far, but they fear there could be more victims. there is new insight into the moments of this helicopter crash in hawaii. the pilot told air traffic

down." here is a clip of that audio just after the crash. the helicopter crashed near the pearl harbor visitor's center thursday. crews removed it from the water yesterday. the five people on board including a canadian family of four, they survived the crash. 7:17 right now. a couple more hours we'll be under this fog advisory. >> it goes until 10:00 for charlotte and points northward. from our lake norman camera, a little fog off in the distance. you can see sunshine today, but we'll be stuck under clouds as we see now. it is a dry start to the day. throughout the first part of the day we will stay dry. but we're tracking unsettled weather on the way. it is a warm start so if

morning walk or a jog, you won't have to worry about layers. mid-40s to 50s. 50s in the mountains. >> once the fog lifts we'll warm up quickly. highs today in the upper 60s but a threat for showers throughout the afternoon. again, some fog early on there. then mostly cloudy, upper 60s. some spots will get close to 70 degrees later today with a threat for afternoon showers. cloudy skies early on mixed in with that fog. toward midday though we'll start to see rain first in the mountains and maybe even closer to the charlotte area. this is not going to last all day. at any point there will be the potential. john will track the showers and you can track them, too with our wsoc weather app free at the app store and google play. tonight cloudy, mild though. by 9:00, low 60s.

are possible so check the skies if you're heading out. tomorrow, again, the threat for some rain. starting off with mostly cloudy skies. going through the afternoon, we'll see some rain first arriving from the south moving northward so by 5:00, 60:k there could be wet roads south of the charlotte area. that heavy rain will push through overnight monday into tuesday. we could see heavy rain at times early tuesday and into wednesday, as well. your commute for tomorrow, starting off cloudy and mild. by the afternoon, that is when we'll have the threat for showers. keep that rain gear handy tomorrow and over the next several days. we're looking at the best chance of rain coming in tuesday and wednesday. as far as how much rain we could see, up to an inch to inch and a half. that is through wednesday night. we're at a deficit this year so we need the rain and we'll get the chance this woke. warmer today despite the

>> when she said i'm pulling a shopping cart and pulling a wheelchair, you have no other response but to say how do you do that? >> reporter: she took her invention to the largest shopping cart in north america. the first was made in 2013. it is not just for children. this seat will fit anyone up to 2350 pounds. >> it needed to of course hold a special needs child/adult. special needs children grow up, so i didn't want it limited. >> reporter: the first cart went to stores in newton including this one at the iga. they are now at stores in canada and australia too. she remembers the first time she saw one at her local supermarket. >> i would go and dream about and talk to the store managers about and when i finally saw it, it was almost like a double- take. >> reporter: she said this is a game changer because it

looking ahead to stories, channel 9 will cover this week a local man accused of trying to snuggle guns will be in court. he will be in court tuesday for an arraignment. an indictment said he bought 63 firearms and 3500 rounds of ammunition and then traveled from charlotte to ghana. he hid more weapons and ammo inside a washer and trier and tried to ship the ma teens to ghana. a manager says he bought them on-line and they only handledment paperwork. he did say he found it odd that he bought multiple types of the same gun. his father thought he went there to visit his girlfriend

here is vicki graf for more on these interesting conditions for february. >> we are starting the day off on the warmer side also dealing with fog in some areas. dense fog advisories from south carolina forward. if you are heading out early, maybe heading into church, take it slow especially on the back roads. hard to see. we're in the upper 40s and low 50s. during the day it will be warmer than yesterday. we'll keep the clouds around. upper 60s and a few showers possible later today. we'll have when rain will arrive coming up. breaking news about a shooting rampage that killed six people in michigan. we just got the suspect's mugshot. authorities say this is jason dalton taken into custody without any issues last night. the shootings were random.

the year before, police named the tournament. an extraordinary event and made 21 arrests over the weekend. fans say safety is not an issue. >> not really. people usually act like they have some sense, you know, but no people come out to have fun. >> reporter: i reached out to cmpd to see if security measures would be put in place, i have not gotten a response. several people complained last year about a service charge applied to their bill at the ritz-carlton during the tournament. they came to an agreement saying along with refunding customers money, they would also donate $75,000 to the c i double a scholarship fund. crews are investigating what started a fire near the

three fire departments responded. firefighters said they were able to contain the fire to just one room. crews say it started outside and then spread to the roof of the con over club. no one was hurt. donald trump took the south carolina primary yesterday while hillary clinton pulled off a crucial win in nevada's democratic caucuses. in both states there were long lines to vote. ted cruz and marco rubio bothth finished with strong performances as they battled for second place. cnn says rubio came in second with a difference of just .2 of a point. another poor showing led an emotional jeb bush to call it a quit. he finished a distant fourth. bernie sanders made it clear he is not dropping out anytime soon. >> i believe that when democrats assemble in philadelphia in july at that

biased and therefore unconstitutional. that forced state lawmakers to redraw district lines. they mostly impact district 12 which is a big chunk of mecklenburg county. that is 100 miles from where adams lives in guilford county. >> it is more people. it doesn't mean that i'm going to give any less attention. it will be more attention. the focus will be strictly on the 12th district wherever it is. >> friday night we told you the supreme court refused to issue a stay in this case. in addition to the new maps, lawmakers voted to move the congressional primary from march to june. later this week, people in belmont will have the chance to meet the new police chief. skip clark has a meet and greet thursday to get to know the community. he started earlier this month and before this he was the police chief in peachtree city, georgia.

new this morning, former subway spokesman jared fogle is hoping to get a reduced prison sentence. their client they say never abused children and the prostitute the were near the age of adulthood. he got 15 years in prison. federal prosecutors had requested a 12 1/2 year sentence. apple says the fbi missed a big opportunity to learn more

apple executives say investigators missed that chance with farook's icloud account. it was changed after the shooting. that prevented a backup that could have revealed further information. they reset it at the fbi's request. he didn't want the government to have unlimited access but that if a court orders it, companies should have to give that data to investigators. he told our jason stoogenke he doesn't want the government to hold the key and he would leave it up to every manufacturer to figure it out. our partners report that the n cdot began the second phase of widening i-85 to the rowan county line.
