>> the crime spree that spanned 13 miles included a popular restaurant parking lot and the survivors clinging on to life. >> i'm brittany johnston. if the last five minutes we learned this man jason dalton who police say went on a random shooting spree in kalamazoo was an uber driver, a cnn affiliate in michigan said he picked up people in between the shootings that left six dead. two are fighting for their lives including a 14-year-old. the step by step. >> reporter: overnight a city gripped with fear after multiple shootings took place in kalamazoo. waking up knowing jason dalton is in custody now. spanning 13 miles at three locations. a parking lot where a woman

several times as the suspect drove by in a chevrolet h hr. her car few feet away, her children terrified. >> reporter: the 45-year-old white male headed to this dealership firing off several shots hitting a father and son, later confirmed dead. >> when i got the call this evening, i was shocked by it. >> reporter: then a third crime scene in the cracker barrel restaurant parking lot, shots rang out hitting two cars filled with people. according to reports there were two other shooting locations at an intersection near the restaurant. >> the threat to the public is over. we know this is the suspect. he is in custody. >> the names of the victims have not been released yet. he will face murder charges and while likely make his first appearance tomorrow. dalton is said to have no previous record

you any new updates on air and online at wsoctv.com. turning to vote 2016. trump took the primary but it was the race for second place that was won florida senator marco rubio edged out texas senator ted percentage points. that is a difference of about 1,000 votes. jus hours after the polls closed jeb bush announced he was suspending his campaign for president. he finished a dis stand 4th. donald trump is taking a commanding lead. eyewitness news reporter tells us more.

hampshire's republican primary and after falling to second senator ted cruz in the iowa caucus but last night cruz fell to third place in south carolina to marco rubio. the florida senator edged out cruz by less than .2 of one percentage point. a record breaking number of absentee ballots showed not only the voter turnout would be high but most were for trump. he got their vote because he is bold and doesn't care what others think. others maintain trump would be a bad fit. >> we're going to start winning for our country. [applause] >> we are going to start winning because our country doesn't win anymore.

the state of south carolina and congratulated the other candidates including jeb bush who suspended his campaign. the democrats turn in south carolina. clinton edged out bernie sanders 52.7% to his 47 point 2%. the two were in a dead heat in the days leading up to the caucuses. some may have doubted us, but we never doubted each other. >> they ran it's very aggressive, effective campaign and i applaud them for their efforts. sanders trounced clinton in the new hampshire primary while clinton had a razor-thin victory in the iowa caucuses. they turn their attention to south carolina. bernie sanders has events in greenville today while hillary will be in the paul met toe state on tuesday. we have a full recap of the

i'll take you to future cast to show you. new at noon, all lanes of i- 85 are back open after a crash had traffic backed up for miles on i-85 southbound between the east gastonia exit and 321. ken lemon saw the crash. he told us that a car and tractor-trailer hit each other. when the truckdriver got out to put some caution triangles around, another car slammed into his truck. we have been told the driver of the car may have life- threatening injuries. william hill is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a fire arm by a felon. police reports say hill shot blake in the parking lot of the budget inn motel on west franklin boulevard on january 23rd. we are asking police if hill and blake knew each other. at the time of his arrest

a handgun. he was previously charged with possession of a fire arm by a felon in 2007. hill pleaded guilty to the crime the following year and was sentenced to 13 to 16 months in prison. a mall just reopened following a shooting there last night. right now police are working to determine if a shooting between two men inside the mall was gang related. they believe the two men were arguing when shots were fired into the air. thankfully, no one was injured. in just a few hours, parents will be able to voice their concern about cms's student assignment project. they are discussing how to handle diversity and high poverty schools within cms. the first discussion is today. residents of district two are invited to attend.

the second at 6:30 at zion church on hamilton road. mecklenburg residents have until tomorrow to fill out the survey which is open to everyone. it asks questions about school diversity, school choice and bus routes. we have a link on our website. you can find it's inside our story on the home page. tomorrow there will be a discussion about student a sign ; at myers park baptist church at 6:00. some board members will be there. the board will vote on goals for the plan fuse. apple is calling out the fbi now. the opportunity the company says investigators missed right after the san bernardino shooting.

a gaston county home opener said they were able to escape a fire in their home overnight all thanks to their dog. the home owner said the dog woke them up and that is when they smelled smoke. when firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the home on cedar avenue and a fire in the kitchen. crews got the fire out in about ten minutes. firefighters say an electrical malfunction in the heating system started the fire. crews are investigating what started a fire near the rock barn golf and country club last night. three fire departments responded. firefighters said they were able to contain the fire to just one room. crews say it started outside and then spread to the roof. nobody was hurt. the c i double a tournament kicks off, but it has been surrounded by violence in recent years. the steps taken to keep everyone safe.

settled. fans heading to cia a this weekend should expect extra security. a private security firm said they will add extra officers near the arena. so far cmpd has not released any changes but last year police reported five arrests during the tournament weekend and they responded to a shooting at a west charlotte nightclub, but the year before that it came to a violent end after a shooting at an uptown hotel. we spoke to fans who say this is still a safe event. >> people usually act like they have some sense, but, no, people come out to have fun. >> the tournament ranks among the top money makers for the city of charlotte drawing an estimated 40 million in 2015.

hundreds will speak about an ordinance they have battled for more than a year. that would ban discrimination in charlotte in places including public restrooms and locker rooms. it failed last year, but advocacy think they have the votes to pass this time around. >> they will have a news conference on this issue tomorrow morning. the group, don't do it charlotte, which opposes the legislation is planning a rally in the front of the government center tomorrow afternoon. they are expecting more than 1,000 people to attend. apple says the fbi missed a big opportunity to learn more about one of the san bernardino shooters. apple executives say they missed a chance to get to his icloud account. the icloud password was changed hours after. shooting preventing an icloud

one company in our area is behind a product that some families are calling a game changer for trips to the supermarket. parents with children with special needs say it will make their lives much, much easier. stephanie maxwell found out how it is coming together. >> reporter: this is a true labor of love made in newton. workers at tech na build are scrambling to make 1800 carts to carry not just groceries but also people with special needs. caroline's cart is named after caroline long who can't walk. her mother came up with the idea eight years ago. >> the very first time i ever drew it was on a napkin at dinner. >> she said i'm pulling a shopping cart and a wheelchair, you have no other responses but to say how do you do that? >> reporter: she took her
