in just the last 30 minutes, channel 9 was the only news outlet to receive a copy of a letter written by the governor to a city council member. it reads in part the item of changing basic long established values and norms of access to public restrooms is misguided and has major statewide ramifications. >> the ordinance aims to ban discrimination against those in the lgbt community in taxis, businesses and public restrooms. more than 1,000 people are expected to show up outside the government center ahead of tomorrow's crucial vote. opponents with the don't do it charlotte campaign plan to hold a rally. supporters with the turnout charlotte group say they will have people there as well. the measure failed last year by a close vote, 6-5. and breaking developments right now after a series of random shootings in kalamazoo, michigan. >> channel 9 has learned the

driver, passed a background check had no criminal history. he shot and killed 6 people in a crime spree that spanned 13 miles of kalamazoo last night, including a parking lot, a car barrel. a 14-year-old is still in critical condition. it is a shocking crime for the community, police and people who know dalton. himself. never had any problems. cops had never been to his house before. >> he picked up and dropped off uber passengers in between the shootings. uber security office released a statement to channel 9 saying in part we have reached out to police to help with the investigation in any way that we can. he could be in court as soon as tomorrow. tonight the gop presidential candidates are coming off their major contest in south carolina. >> donald trump solidly won the primary followed by a close marco rubio and ted cruz.

means for the race moving forward. alexa. >> reporter: blake and liz, here in rock hill, some roads are still peppered with campaign signs of various gop candidates. yesterday the people of south carolina spoke clearly. the majority voting for donald trump. experts tell me this election is far from over though. surrounded by his family and supporters, donald trump thanked the people of south carolina. last night marked his second gop contest win. locals today said they weren't surprised by his victory regardless of their opinion. >> i'm not happy about it but i'm not surprised. trump. as far as the republican. >> reporter: karen pointed out historically no one has won both new hampshire and south carolina and failed to get the republican nomination, adding trump seems to be defying the

for the most part, the rain is light. i'll pinpoint when it will be heavier coming up. >> thanks, john. in the last 90 minutes, cms board members met with parents concerned about a plan that could impact where thousands of students go to school. >> we have been following every development with student assignment and was there for today's discussion. elsa. >> reporter: this was a much more intimate gathering compared to the forum held earlier this week in district 6. the point was to get the district and the community together to talk about questions, concerns and wishes for cms. a few dozen people gathered this afternoon. some here today had kids in the school system. others were future parents and some concerned citizens wanting to be part of the conversation. after breaking into small groups, they presented the discussion to the whole crowd. there were varying concerns and goals talked about but everybody expressed the same end goal, creating equal education across the district.

>> this is channel 9 eyewitness news. covering the carolinas. >> new developments in the legal battle between apple and the justice department over one of the san bernardino shooter's iphones. >> the san bernardino county government which owns the phone because syed farook was an employee did not install software that would have let the fbi unlock it. authorities say if the technology was installed, county officials could have easily unlocked the phone for investigators. the software costs $4 a month. earlier this week we told you the fbi got a court order forcing apple to device a method to unlock the phone. apple refused saying that technology would give agents the ability to unlock any apple product, threatening customers' privacy. security experts say the phone could alert them to other targets. police say syed farook and his wife killed 14 people in the december terrorist attack.

carolina health officials will release updated information on the number of mumps cases impacting our area. on friday, we told you there's 11 reports cases, two confirmed in county. considered probable. the two confirmed cases have headquarters. health officials say two employees at the support center tested positive for mumps. authorities are now working to make sure that the 4,000 people who work there stay safe. mumps is a highly contagious virus that can easily spread. symptoms are much like the flu, with fever, chills, and body aches. police arrested a man wanted in a deadly shooting from january. hill is charged with second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. police reports say hill shot blake in the parking lot of the

franklin boulevard on january 23rd. we're asking police if hill and blake knew each other. they found hill with a handgun at the time of his arrest yesterday. he was previously charged with possession of a firearm by a felon in 2007. he pled guilty to the crime the following year and was sentenced to 13 to 16 months in prison. tomorrow morning a morgantown teenager accused of murder plotting attacks in the name of isis will have a court hearing. he is charged for the death of travis baker whose body was found buried in his own backyard. he discussed the importance of practice killing before carrying out a masterror attack. new information out of columbia, south carolina. tonight there is extra security at columbia center mall after a shooting last night. officers are looking for two

the air. they don't believe the incident is gang related but officials say they are not ruling anything out. nobody was hurt. this comes nearly two months after the shooting at north lake mall on christmas eve. police say two groups were fighting before westbrook pointed a gun at an off duty police officer. that officer shot and killed westbrook. syrian media outlets report at least 50 people have died in bombings outside of the capital. isis says it is responsible for the attacks. two of the fighters set off a car bomb and both detonated explosives they were wearing. the neighborhoods where the attacks happened has seen months. pope francis has requested that the death penalty be suspended for one year. he asked politicians to suspend

year to mark the holy year of mercy. the year of mercy started in december and will end in november. nearly 1 million people in south carolina could be at risk of hackers getting their health information. the medicaid agency has insufficient software to protect customers. it will cost $100 million, most of which is covered by the federal government to upgrade the system. rain is pushing into the area and it is just the beginning. >> john aherns is tracking major changes ahead of our workweek. >> we're going to have temperatures at least 15 degrees cooler than right now. it is still very mild outside. in the middle 60s across most of the area. by mid week, some of us may be lucky to get out of the 50s. let's talk about rainfall. it's only in spots. you're going to be all right if

also near the university. we have rain drops south side over in star mount. still back a little bit in parts of steel creek and montclair and honey town farms. that will be pushing east over the next hour. and over in matthews, indian trail, up and down highway 74, independence, you're going to have some of those showers to deal with between now and 7:30. down in the south and east over richmond county, showers near hoffman. more rainfall pushing up into the mountains. we will not tracking this between here and boone until tonight. this band of rain will hold together. our futurecast says by # or so things will start to wind down for charlotte for now. tomorrow we won't be tracking as much main as we will be tracking cooler air moving through. at 2:00 in the morning, look at this band of cloud cover. notice how it picked up a

then there's a thick dose of overcast skies. then it pushes into charlotte. it won't be dramatic or a lot of fan fair, but behind the scenes, i was talk going this on facebook, that is the cold air that will be rolling through and you will feel the difference. after that rounds of heavy rain will be moving through. i think a lot of the rain will wait until later on on monday. so for most of the day tomorrow, we're not talking about huge threats. i mean, there might be a little bit of fog, spotty showers. i just want you to start thinking about the cold air that will be moving through. not terribly dramatic yet. highs around 60. that's good for this time of year. down to the south well into the middle 60s. but by up to the north you're going to start to feel some of that cooler air. statesville, cleveland and salisbury. tracking a few showers tomorrow on interactive radar. but watch the temperatures. they will be falling down to the middle 50s.

upper 40s the rest of the week. for the tournament getting ready by tuesday, it will be chilly with highs in the 50s and also a few showers as well. we will stay down with realistic winter numbers by tuesday and wednesday. we may see a few showers tomorrow. but i think better rain chances tomorrow night and into tuesday. possibly heavy rain and even thunderstorms coming in on wednesday. we will talk about that later on tonight at 10:00 and 11:00. really tomorrow the main thing to think about will be the temperature change. it won't be terribly dramatic yet, but just wait, tuesday you will feel it. >> grab the coat and the umbrella. >> yes.

youngest to start the youngest to start the >> 20-year-old chase elliot says the entire week leading up to the great american race has been a blast. he is the young thest to start on the pole. all eyes were on elliot and the 24 car. elliot led three laps but saw his day come to an end 18 laps in. he lost control on turn 4. the front end of elliot's car was heavily damage. his day over quickly. the second caution of the weekend comes out with the 14 car. that's not tony stewart but vickers. he spins out. he finishes 26th. now, the third caution comes via a pair of rookies. chris busher and matt tuesday he will. both drivers would walk away from this hard crash into the wall. dale earnhardt, jr. saw his day come to an end early as well. we will have more on that.

it comes down three wide on the final lap. hamlin battling and pulls off the closest victory in daytona 500 history. big day for toyota. check out just how close they took the top three spots in this one. >> i don't know where that came from. i don't know what happened. i can't even figure what i did. but it all just came together. i got the push obviously from the 4. but this wouldn't be possible if this wasn't toyotas sticking together. >> earnhardt junior led for 14 laps. he had to be aggressive late and it may have cost him. he eventually spins out on lap 171 and says his car's balance was a big issue how they finish and underestimated just how critical the handling was going to be during a day race at daytona. >> we have to do a little more

come back and be ready for the balance. we were starting to move forward, getting aggressive. and, yeah, just lost it. >> the charlotte hornets continue their six-game road trip tonight nets the nets. they won against milwaukee on friday night. the hornets have now won four straight games. they found themselves trailing in the 3rd quarter but outscored them in the 4th. walker continues to shine, leading the hornets in scoring with a 25-point effort. the hornets are two games above .500 and currently sit in 7th place in the hunt for the playoffs. >> we really want to get to the playoffs. we know how important playing on the road is. just getting wins period. playing on the road is not easy. so you just have to be even more locked in. >> so they tipped off with brooklyn tonight at 6:00. we will have the highlights later on.
