mooresville at 12:12, 12:15 into davidson. and so far, i have a new update, the national weather service is canceling the tornado warning for catawba and iredell counties. i think they'll keep alexander county in this for a while. but i believe the threat for the most wind damage in alexander county has come to an end. i'm more concerned about this line that has a severe thunderstorm warning with it as it has a big history of producing wind damage across the area. mooresville, 12:12, 12:15 in toward davidson. we showed you pictures of christine rapp in the storm cam . >> reporter: we just moved into lincoln county.
12:01 pm
very heavy rain. a couple minutes ago we weren't able to see that far ahead of us because of the rain. we're just to the north of the strongest part of the storm. i mentioned just north of high sholes, very heavy rain and strong winds. it's moving very fast. the storm is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 12:45, it's moving at 60 to 70 miles per hour. so it will be here and gone but we had to really slow down our speed, both hands on the wheel because of the winds that were so strong. we've been hearing reports of downed power lines and trees. we're likely going to see some of those throughout areas of lincoln and gaston county with these strong thunderstorms. we're getting near the lincolnton area, light rain still continuing here in storm cam. still some very dark ominous clouds ahead of us. they're moving very fast here this afternoon.
12:02 pm
we dealt with the heavy rain. and we've seen some lightning. so these storms are very strong and powerful. they'll be moving very fast. up to 60 to 70 miles per hour as i mentioned with your biggest concern being strong winds, heavy rain, some minor flooding a possibility as well. and again, these storms are moving to the east/northeast. i have an update in areas outside of lincolnton, we're going to continue to track the storm as it remains. we'll give you an update in a few minutes. keith, back to you. here's another picture of the tree down. this is in burke county. that's where a lot of reports we have coming in with this storm as it strengthened in the foothills. dave faherty sending us these pictures. this is not far from the ikert area. moving east down i-40. the part that prompted severe warnings working into catawba
12:03 pm
let me focus in on taylorsville. most of alexander county, you're clear here, some gusty winds. under a tornado warning into alexander county until 12:30 here this afternoon. you can see that sliver with that particular line. this particular cell is part of the cell that did prompt the initial warning for the tornado warning from doppler radar. the initial rotation. so that's why there's still a concern. i'm seeing this in the weakening phase considerably from what we saw 30 to 45 minutes ago when this warning was issued. i'd say still stay in shelter. taylorsville, you're breaking free of this, the line moves to the northern part of alexander county. and we're getting no reports of any injuries thankfully from all these reports of wind damage coming on through with this line of thunderstorms. so that's great news. i hope folks are heeding the warnings and staying inside. let's get an update of where the current warnings are for a good section of eastern lincoln
12:04 pm
moving into iredell county now. the line breaks up once you get further to the south. the worst weather i can find on live early warning doppler 9 is here between denver and lincolnton, along highway 150 rolling from denver into lincolnton, as you cross over highway 16, still some torrential down pours. this all still west of lake norman. but it's going to continue to move to the east very quickly into the northern part of lake norman. cheryls ford getting in on this right now. so let's put a storm track on northeast. should move mariposa ads 12:09. cornelius and davidson, 12:20. mecklenburg county and huntersville, around 12:23. you'll still find heavy rain further south as you head down into gaston county, it's not looking to be as severe. it's still raining very steadily. and it's not going to take a
12:05 pm
today. the winds have been gusting 30 to 40 miles per hour even just outside of the thunderstorms. so you can see from our lake norman camera here, some very heavy rain is pushing on through at this time at 12:06. we're seeing big down pours as we're seeing heavy rains pushing in. we have a severe thunderstorm warning for catawba county, gaston county, iredell county, until 12:45. and looking at another report from the national weather service, a tree on a power line on cumberland avenue in gaston county. so you go into gastonia. it doesn't look as severe. but it's not taking as much of an impressive look on radar to cause damaging wind rolling on through. you can see heavy down pours just to the west side of gastonia. moving its way on highway 29
12:06 pm
just came out of bessemer city, we saw very heavy rain here. we may look at stronger wind gusts coming into gastonia now. they may not be looking as impressive on the radar screen, it's still going to produce a lot of wind. let's talk about york county. the southern end of this storm is strengthening out of clover and york moving down 161. on the north side of rock hill. we're seeing very strong rain returns showing up on live early warning doppler 9 coming out of the connellsvilles area and east side of work. we put a storm track on this. that would track through the lake wiley vicinity shortly in the next 5 minutes. around 12:12, rock hill, 12:15, the carowinds area, along the south carolina/north carolina line, at 12:19. 12:22. now officially, no severe thunderstorm warning with this particular cell that's coming through part of york county right now.
12:07 pm
that's been off to the north, part of gaston and lincoln counties, but this particular cell not under a warning i would take shelter around the steele creek vicinity. you'll look at heavy rainfall coming in. extending from steele creek, south on 49, as you head to york highway working west across the buster boyd bridge. me i have rains working west there. and on the north side of the city, as you head out on ebenezer road, you'll see more of this heavy rain coming through shortly as we pass our way through the bottom of the hour, that works its way further to the east. to around ballantyne through around indian land. we'll see that role through about 12:30 this afternoon. winds could gust any where from 12:30 to 12:45. we're going to go to the news desk now with stephanie to get more updates of some of the wind damage reports that we're getting in.
12:08 pm
of damage we've seen so far. we want to talk about south charlotte now. a tree crash into a car there and knocked out power. eyewitness news reporter angela hong found out other neighborhoods are still in the dark in that area. >> right now about 4200 duke energy customers are without power in mecklenburg county. here in the will more neighborhood, about 200 people were sitting in the dark for 2.5 hours this morning because of this tree. it came down, dragged down power lines, and obviously landed on top of this car. i spoke with city of charlotte crews before they left the scene, they told me they have been busy all morning clearing lines. here at wood crest avenue and south trion. this old tree got knocked down by the wind. it was across the street for a few hours before crews cleared it. the tree totaled this car. there's broken glass everywhere. neighbors described what they heard and saw. >> i thought it was a heavy strike of lightning. and we didn't know what was going on.
12:09 pm
outside, and we seen it. and we were shocked to see that. >> a lot of the trees in the will more neighborhood are very old. over 100 years old. they expect things like this to happen as the ground is saturated and the winds are picking up. city crews told me they'd be busy all afternoon clearing trees. angela hong, channel 9 eyewitness news. we want to go to live pictures now, we're seeing more power outages because of the severe weather that's moving in. this is a live picture of sardis lane at valley brook road in south charlotte. as you can see, energy crews on the scene now as they are trying to restore power. you can see they have buck trucks out there. no word at this point how many people in this area of sardis road and valley brook road do not have power. we're working to try to get that information. but again, as this storm is moving through the area, this is what we're expecting to see. a lot of power outages. trees coming down.
12:10 pm
roots are saturated on a lot of the trees. just a little wind will bring down the trees. trucks out there. crews trying to restore power. let's go back to meteorologist keith monday with an update on that system for us right now. keith? >> let's look at some of the strong winds coming through the region here. we've looked at our data on live early warning doppler 9. there's been a severe thunderstorm warning issued for york and chester county working into mecklenburg county. these wind speeds estimated picking up from around 50 miles per hour to 60 miles per hour or stronger. now again some of the returns we're getting from the radar are pretty high up in the sky. but it's picking up wind above us of 60 plus miles per hour. so i'm really concerned about some significant wind damage working its way into rock hill to fort mill down in through chester.
12:11 pm
probably get another severe thunderstorm warning issued out of this line. moving at 55 to 60 miles per hour. earlier, we came on the air, right around 11:30, 11:40, there was a tornado warning alexander counties. the storm that prompted the warning through alexander, moved out into wilkes county. and they've raised it to a severe thunderstorm warning. tornado warning. that's great news for sure. as we look ahead to high wind warnings coming through for the heavy weather that's been pushing through part of york and in through chester counties. a high wind warning. so wind speeds, what are they estimating the wind speeds with that? 55 to 60 miles per hour i'm anticipating here. we're seeing strong wind coming through. we're picking that up on the live early warning doppler 9. this storm is broken up into
12:12 pm
let's eliminate tornado warning from alexander county. that's passed and done. i'm more concerned about general strong storm winds working its way on through the northern part of york county and pushing into lake wiley and tega cay. north side of rock hill. this will eventually work its way into charlotte. at the moment, we don't have the severe thunderstorm warning with this. we have a high wind warning for york and chester counties. until about -- until later on this afternoon. you can see the time line charlotte, 12:27. as we work our way toward 12:29, over toward noda. we're looking at strong wind, possibly damaging wind. for lake wiley and south charlotte with that line moving through. and we've been getting a lot of reports of wind damage in as these lines continue to work their way to the east. working it way on through the
12:13 pm
of the day for today. we'll head over to stephanie now to get more updates on the reports we've gotten in. >> actually something we just got not too long ago, alexander, cleveland, and catawba counties, we heard from ems, they're reporting no injuries at this point. we want to go to bill summers with lincoln county emergency manage. he's on the phone now. thank you for joining us now. >> good morning. we're not experiencing a large number of calls. we have five reports of trees down on the roadways. we had one report of a roof -- part of a roof possibly that had blown off of a barn. maybe a home on the west end. but so far, we're not doing too bad in the storm. no injuries. that's been reported yet.
12:14 pm
>> can you tell us what roads those are so folks can avoid those areas now? bill, if you're still there with us, you did mention there are reports of trees in the road, five reports of trees in the road, can you tell us which roads you're talking about so folks can avoid those areas ? >> most of the areas we're looking at now, and i don't have the road names in front of me. but from the central part of the county west is the areas that are effected. but i don't have the screen up in front of me where i can see where those are. >> and also you mentioned maybe a roof damaged or a barn that's damaged. is that also in the central or western part of the county as well? >> that's right. western and central. >> and again you mentioned no injuries reported so far. >> nothing reported. correct. >> and advice for people who are in the area.
12:15 pm
of the storm. what are you telling people when they are making these phone calls about damage or any roars that they're seeing right now. >> okay. again, i'm having trouble hearing you. maybe -- >> it looks like we're having trouble with bill summers. we appreciate him joining us right now. we'll try to get back to him again and try to get more information. but we did talk to alexander county, cleveland county, and catawba county ems. they're reporting no injuries. we just heard from bill summers there, also reporting no injuries. but had five report of trees down in the road. and possibly maybe a roof or a barn damaged. he mentioned this was probably in the central or western part of the count. getting a lot of reports in. we also had video in. seeing crews who are working to restore power right now. this was the sardis road area in south charlotte.
12:16 pm
but we did see that getting reports of power outages at this point because of this storm that's moving through our area again as you've been hearing from meteorologist keith monday that we are under a tornado warning for some areas, a tornado watch for other areas. here's that live video that i just mentioned. this is sardis lane and valley brook road. you can see there was a cmpd car blocking that road so drivers could not go by the area as crews are trying to restore power. you see those two bucket trucks right there. no word at this point how many outages in this area. but again, this is in south charlotte, sardis lane and valley brook road. trying to find out how long it's going to take to restore power in this area. keith monday. you have an update for us? >> we're talking about wind speeds here. we mentioned this a moment ago. right before the severe thunderstorm warning was issued for york and chester counts. this is data from doppler 9. i'm picking up wind speeds off ground level.
12:17 pm
fort mill between 50 to 70 miles per hour. this could do some significant wind and tree damage with this as that line races to the east. all this green you see here is an estimate of the wind coming through the storms. i wanted to show you these numbers, impressive numbers here showing up at 60 plus miles per hour with the line that's working its way. so that's prompted the new severe thunderstorm warning including all of mecklenburg county. all of cabarrus county, union county as well in this. part of lancaster county, until 1:15 this afternoon as the line races quickly to the east. still seeing the wind speeds with the motion of this rolling off to the east. at about 55 to 60 miles per hour. so let's dig deeper on live early warning doppler 9. there's a concern for strong wind coming out of this. around mcadenville. out of belmont to the daniel steel garden areas. eastern gaston county, this is where the storm starts. it's now working its way over to charlotte mecklenburg
12:18 pm
airport, excuse me, into the western part of the city. so this is going to cause some significant delays at the airport here momentarily as that line works on through. working its way into the southern part of gaston county, western meck county. south out of lake wiley. a lot of heavy rain, strong wind out of highway 49 out of the steele creek area. i'm concerned for wind damage in lake wiley in steele creek toward the carowinds vicinity. one last stop here further south into tega cay. strong winds are coming on through. not just tega cay but the north side of rock hill. the indian hook community as you work your way around lake wiley, seeing big rain bursts with heavy rain coming through this, let's get back to stephanie for another update of wind damage information coming in. >> we're going to go to reporter dave faherty who is live near the burke county line near hildebrand. you tweeted out about a tree down across i-40. what are you seeing right now?
12:19 pm
trees down not only here in burke county, caldwell county, over in catawba county as well. if you look off, right here i'm in the sunshine. but if you look off to the east. you can see the dark clouds there off in the distance. i was parked on this over pass over interstate 40 when the storm blew through. take a look at some of this video i didn't even get out of the truck at this time. we had such strong winds. i saw wind gusts in excess of 30-40 miles per hour. that brought down trees across burke county. a number of areas around valdeese. and over into catawba county we saw trees down in a neighborhood there. along interstate 40. we got into the long view area. a tree came crashing down on a home there. you can see it off in the distance. there was a couple inside. they were not hurt. they were in the kitchen when the tree came through the roof there. you can see them also talking with firefighters. they're all right. that video that you're seeing
12:20 pm
county. the eastern half of burke county. again, very strong winds came through. it probably lasted only about 20 minutes that line of storms. the temperature, and this is really interesting, went from 45, it's 60 degrees out here now. 15 degrees in less than an hour. reporting live from burke county, dave faherty, channel 9 eyewitness news. thanks for that live update. and look, this is the hd charlotte cam. look at those ominous clouds. you can see the storm is approaching the charlotte area. but it's hit some of our other counties at this point. you just heard from dave talking about damage there. also we've heard about damage in lincoln county, also some other storm damage in other counties. and we've gotten reports. at this point, no injuries reported after the storm rolls through alexander county, cleveland county, and catawba county, let's go back out to meteorologist keith monday to find out where the storm is right now and the areas that need to be prepared as it's approaching. >> west charlotte from the
12:21 pm
vicinity through paw creek, the heavy rain is pushing in for now. mecklenburg county is under a severe thunderstorm warning. not a tornado warning but a severe thunderstorm warning until 1:15. that heavy line of rain extending from lake wiley through belmont mcadenville toward mount holly, we're looking at the line racing to the east. a big line of rain works through. pour. this is moving through uptown charlotte here. right around 12:26. so four minutes, four or five minutes from right now. you should see this come through around 12:28. and unc charlotte around 12:31. maybe heading to class, unc charlotte, may let this thing pass by.
12:22 pm
today. within the next 20 to 30 minutes this line will pass through the city. once this line passes by, that's likely going to be it. but these storms have a history of wind damage coming on through we've had reports through cleveland, through burke county, through part of catawba county, and even part of gaston county, a few reports of wind damage possibly around gastonia with trees falling down on power lines. christine rapp has been on storm cam. give us an update. >> reporter: we're on highway 73 in eastern lincoln county. we've been traveling here throughout the lincoln county,
12:23 pm
we're on the backside of that system. it was very fast. driving through some of the areas, we drove through lincolnton, we talked to emergency managers there a bit ago we did see downed trees in the streets. nothing blocking but definitely debris from the trees in the streets. a lot of ponding as well due to the brief heavy rain, a lot of ditches, streams were running very high on the backside of that one little storm that kind of rolled through areas of lincoln and gaston counties a little bit ago. that's the storm that's still under a severe thunderstorm warning. they are very fast moving. 60 to 70 miles per hour as this is traveling east/northeast. torrential down pours, heavy winds. 60 to 70 miles per hour wind gusts. these storms are very serious as they continue
12:24 pm
eastbound. head into areas south of the lake, lake norman to kind of give you an idea of what the storms look like out there. for now back to you indoors. update. let's get you an over all wide view of what's going on here. areas to the west where the weather started from shelby through morganton, ikert toward hickory, you're in the clear, this is done. no more warnings for you. the line is developing along i- 77. here we are. low and behold that line holding together very well. we have severe thunderstorm warnings until 1:15 from iredell county through statesville, from charlotte south into rock hill through chester and lancaster counties and that will extend east toward monroe through concord and salisbury as the line moves further eastbound. i want to break the storm up into a few spots and show you where we expect some of the worst weather.
12:25 pm
it starts up north in statesville. this is part of the storm that came out of catawba county. working east through the shinville community, working toward cleveland and rowan county around 12:34. shinville around 12:30. in the next four to five minutes. a lot of lightning in statesville right now. and a lot of heavy blinding rain on i-77. you don't want to head out on the interstate up in iredell county from troutman. cheryls ford your clear. it's a little lighter in davis and cornelius for the time being. but the rain will pick up. the spots of yellow can produce heavy rain and strong winds.
12:26 pm
charlotte heading into huntersville, on the southside of huntersville, right around 485 and 77 as you cross over toward the highland creek community, that's where the batch of rain picks back up once again. and gets stronger. let's track this particular line as it moves out of the paw creek community, out of huntersville. moving toward concord mills. and highland creek. croft around 12:37. best advice, if you don't have to be any where, or if you have to be somewhere, let this line pass you by. it's not a bad idea to let this ride through. after 12:45, this will be out of your hair up here to the north. we'll talk more about the southern part of the storm in a second. let's get to stephanie for an update on damage reports. we want to get a live report from blake hanson who is eight miles south of statesville. tell us the conditions you're

12:28 pm
saturated. have you seen any of those? even on the side. not even moving into the road. but just coming down because of these conditions ? >> we wouldn't be surprised if we see it soon. i haven't had a chance to stand outside yet. but i can feel it in the passenger seat from the wind moving our truck around. >> the wind is very strong right now. i see some people using their hazards on i-77 southbound because it's so difficult for people to see. the wind and rain picks up harder and harder the farther north we go. >> blake hanson live for usment thank you so much. he's about 8 miles south of
12:29 pm
that's an area where people really need to avoid because the storm is starting to move into that area. you mentioned 77 and 485 as a matter of fact. this is the wind speed that i'm picking up with meteorologist vicki graf on live early warning doppler 9. wind speeds close to 60 miles per hour. along highway 49 and 160. the steele creek area is where the worst wind is coming through as we speak crossing over 485. this isn't far from the charlotte out let mall on the west side of the city toward the intersection of 160 and 485. right there at this time. we're picking up wind speeds of 60 miles per hour. north side of york county as you head out on 77, carowinds, we're getting wind speeds around 60 miles per hour coming in from the live radar in
12:30 pm
these are damaging wind speeds coming on through. that's the concern. that's prompted the severe thunderstorm warning. charlotte metro. meck county, iredell, rowan, to the east, south through york, chester, and lancaster through this midday. there's the view of the big warning across the region as we have the big line of very strong winds coming on through. let's go in a little deeper here. live early warning doppler 9 as we talked about the northern part of the storm coming through huntersville. highway 73 out of huntersville. it really picks up. mountain island lake. highland creek's about to get in on this. you're about to see the wind pick up. paw creek, you're in the thick of it now. coming up on the north side of the brookshire. you're seeing strong winds and he heavy rain coming through. further back to the south, charlotte douglas seeing the
