new tonight, we reached out to carlee and all members of city council and none of them would comment. so i took our questions straight to the mayor. >> i am very sad to see ron carlee not renew his contract and to say that he, you know, intends to leave the city. >> reporter: tonight, mayor jennifer roberts opened up to me about this letter from charlotte city manager ron carlee announcing he's decided not to seek a contract extension. thanksgiving afternoon. >> he has moved the city in so many, you know, different ways on -- gotten us through tough issues and have just been a great manager. >> reporter: in his letter, carlee touched on his accomplishment and challenges referring to the trial of officer randall kerick and moving the city through a

>> it is my hope that we can continue to have his service through budget season and, you know, we'll be in discussion -- i'll be in discussion with council and with him to see, you know, what that all means. >> reporter: throughout his tenure, some on council weren't pleased with carlee. questioning his handling of the fire investigator who said she was wrongly terminated. but roberts told me they were in talks for him to stay on. >> we were in active discussion. about renewing that. and again, we will now actively discuss how we work through an interim period and move forward. >> reporter: carlee is expected to work out his contract, which expires at the end of next month.

if he will continue on in an interim role. a committee that was to decide carlee's future concluded their meetings last week. those discussions were all private. it was unclear if they had anything to do with carlee's decision. you can read carlee's entire letter by going to wsoctv.com. it is right there inside my story on our home page. crews are rushing to get the power back on for thousands of people all across the carolinas. 11,000 people are without power in mecklenburg county alone. 120,000 outages across north carolina. crews will continue to re -- alexa ashwell shows us some of the neighborhoods hit hardest by the severe weather today. >> reporter: the wind is really whipping out here. i'm in the myers park area in this section of queens road, northbound in particular is shut down for obvious reasons.

that has fallen across the roadway. this is one example of damage due to powerful wind that is hit both north and south carolina. chris jackson was driving in south carolina when he captured these rotating clouds on his cell phone while a tornado warning was in effect for the area. thankfully it appears one never touched down. still systems throughout the day packed powerful wind causing widespread power outages and damage in both north and south carolina. here in downtown sharall, crews were busy downing a tree that snapped in half. in charlotte, thousands of people also lost power. some had cars and homes damaged by fallen trees. the charlotte fire department posted this sign on one home warning people it wasn't safe. >> reporter: damian said he was at work when he got a text

>> i had just pulled in about 45 to 60 seconds before the tree fell. >> reporter: amy had just stepped in the house when this tree fell on her friend's car. thankfully no one was seriously hurt, but the damage kept first responders busy. police were responding to calls and helping block off roads while crews worked quickly to restore power here and across the area. now, the tree fell here at queens road and henly place. i want to correct myself. it is the northbound lanes of queens road that are currently open. the southbound lanes are closed and will be during your morning commute. so you want to avoid that particular area. reporting live in myers park, alexa ashwell. just in the past 20 minutes, we learned that a rowan county road is closed. the d.o.t.

closed. crews hoping to reopen that roadway within the hour. we just checked and part of wilkin son boulevard is closed in west charlotte. crews hoping to reopen the road in time for your morning drive. the storm has also caused damage in eastern north carolina and virginia. >> in the town of waiverly have va, three people died. >> take a look at all of this debris scattered across the ground. a man was sitting inside his car when the storm hit. he says the wind picked the car up and that's when he started to pray. >> all i can do is just pray and pray and pray. the wind actually pickedlet car up and dropped us down. >> reporter: back here in north carolina, a mother and her

inside this durham home when a down. luckily no one was injured. and in raleigh, police taped off a church -- no one was significant damage. dozens of people sent us photos of the damage in their neighborhoods after the storm passed and we've posted those wsoctv.com. thank you allyson. new tonight, bank of america is eliminating some of its positions in charlotte. the bank saying it's cutting a small number of global marketing and corporate affairs employees, but would not say how many. tens of thousands of positions have been cut over the past 6 years, many of them tied to the bank's 2008 purchase of nationwide.

melton used the bible in this picture to put illegal drugs and tobacco inside. they say she brought it to a detention center where her son is currently serving out his sentence. investigators found evidence of a meth lab at a home in charlotte. they charged robert greiss and christopher conner with trafficking meth. fears, frustrations and concerns are mounting over whether charlotte-mecklenburg schools will shuffle thousands of students to different schools. new tonight at 11:00, liz foster questioned the superintendent about this divisive issue tonight. liz. >> reporter: a lot of parents still have serious questions about how it will work if their child is shifted to another school. tonight i took their concerns

clark for a one-on-one interview. as the charlotte-mecklenburg school board reviews input and talks about whether to move kids to different schools, others are not waiting for their decision. cms parentagessicca told channel 9 she's moving her family to south carolina next month and one reason is because she doesn't want her 10 year old son moved to another school after they chose to live in pineville within walking distance of this school. >> it's our right. we want to do what's best for our kids. >> reporter: the mayors of matthews and minn hill are exploring forming their own school district. >> i can see some of the results of some of our better schools going down and i don't want that to happen. >> reporter: parents asked questions directly to superintendent ann clark. after the meeting, i had a few questions of my own. there seems to be a lot of people opposed to student assignment.

>> i really hope our families will stay connected to our process and not assume decisions that haven't been made yet. >> reporter: clark made it clear the board hasn't decided on any specific plan for student assignment and she says they won't for 4 to 6 months. do you feel like the board members are somewhat dragging their feet? >> well, it's taken the board 8 months to get to the goals. they've taken the job very seriously. >> reporter: superintendent clark told me they may have a clearer picture of what student assignment may look like after the next meeting when school board members discuss guiding principles. that meeting is on march 9th and you can count on channel 9 to follow every development in this discussion. liz foster, channel 9 eyewitness news. we've posted liz's raw interview with the

a bond committee. over a video advertisement featuring the governor. he talks about the state's growth and why the debt will not require a tax increase. the board wants a committee response by next tuesday. tonight, the mountains are bracing for snow after dealing with widespread storm damage today. wind gusts got up to 40 miles per hour in the foothills causing trees to copel over. one couple says they were inside their home when a tree came crashing down on it. that storm bringing very strong winds into the charlotte area. john ahrens is tracking them from severe weather center 9. >> they are howling. i i'm sure you can hear them roaring outside. it's going to be awe tough morning tomorrow. right now on the board, 40. originally this is 60 in union

30 over lancaster. 32 mile-per-hour winds from boone up into jefferson. live in the morning, doppler 9, windy and rainy in some spots. we have showers up through eastern alexander county. down as you go through parts of clairemont and newton. light showers that will push into statesville. by 1130, you might see it clip trout man. and around 1140 -- all courtesy of this monster storm. you see a winding counterclock. that's going to bring more wind for the charlotte area as we go through tomorrow. the big difference it's going to leave is the windchill. this is what it's going to feel like tomorrow morning. keep in mind the air temperature is going to be about 41. way colder than that as you

and these kind of windchills last all the way through lunchtime. 43 is what the windchill will be. we should be in the mid-50s as far as temperature goes. over in future cast, with the mountains, we'll see snowfall. the high country going see snow. about an inch to 3 inches by 7:00. more as you move through into friday. in charlotte, the biggest concern will be the strong winds and the snow will start to wind down in the mountains by friday afternoon. we're looking at temperatures about 50 by lunchtime. but it's going to feel like it's way down there in the 40s through most of the day. and going out for ciaa events or games, you're going to see temperatures in the low 50s. clearing skies, but then the cold really starts kicking in. by about friday morning or so, you're going to wake up to an air temperature of 31.
