channel 9 eyewitness news at 11:00. we are following several breaking stories tonight. first in kansas, four people are dead, several injured after a series of shootings. investigators piece together this shooting rampage, one of the locations that was targeted tonight is workplace. thanks for joining us tonight, i'm scott wickersham. >> anchor allison latos is following this investigation in our breaking news center. allison. >> here's what we know right now. four people were killed during the rampage, including the gunman and another 14 victims were taken to area hospitals. right now, police are investigating four separate crime scenes, including this workplace and its parking lot. there were two other shootings in separate locations before the gunman stopped at that facility. the rampage started around 6:00 eastern time with the report of a man shot while driving. shortly after the sheriff says the suspect shot a different person, stole their car, and

there, the sheriff says the suspect shot one person in the parking lot before going into the facility and shooting 15 people. the gunman was an employee. the sheriff addressed how officers ended the violence. gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement and the shooter. and law enforcement shot and killed. >> again, the shooter is among the dead. the sheriff's office has not identified him. they say he used an assault rifle in the attacks and also had a pistol on him. we'll keep you updated as new details come in tonight. we are following breaking news out of uptown charlotte where in the past 90 minutes, channel 9 was there as police took this man to jail on charges that he killed his 82- year-old mother. we first reported erwin's

since then, charlotte mecklenburg police have been questioning him about this two- year-old case. an eyewitness news reporter, dashawn brown was outside police headquarters when police brought him out. >> police say there are a will the of moving parts in this investigation and they have many more people left to interview. so far, their only arrest has been her son, erwin feldman many neighbors shocked and others relieved. neighbors here expressed relief. >> we've had this hanging over our heads for two years. >> hours after cmpd announced a major break in a two-year-old murder case, investigators are back in her south charlotte neighborhood collecting evidence and neighbors say restoring a sense of peace. >> you don't like things that hang for, you have no idea what really happened. >> police released few details on the case, but said feldman's

autopsy results revealed the 82- year-old was strangled and hit in the head several times. it was her son who called police, and said he found his mother dead. as for the reason why -- >> in regards to the question about motive -- >> it is a question they are not ready to answer until they have many more questions in this case. >> i can tell you that numerous interviews and physical evidence have led us to the point where we made this arrest today. >> when someone lives close to you has someone happen to them, it is pretty shocking and devastating. >> and also tonight, police say feldman came in on his own to be interviewed by police. they also say it was physical evidence and numerous interviews that gave them probable cause to arrest him. reporting live, dashawn brown, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> you can read all of our past coverage of this case by going to wsoctv.com. there, you'll find links to

article on our home page. >> also breaking near hickory, a violent robbery at a convenience store. we have pictures near the scene where this happened. this is inside the fast and fresh store happening in the last hour. police say this robbery suspect did have a weapon. the store clerk was hit during the robbery, but not seriously hurt. and breaking right now in uptown charlotte. a pedestrian tonight. this happened in the past four hours on 7th street. here you see the significant damage to the front window of the bus where it hit that person. police tell us the man has nonlife threatening injuries. they expect him to fully recover. there were 15 people on the bus and put on to a different bus tonight. police are investigating whether charges will be filed in that case. it could be tomorrow night before duke energy can get the power back on for everybody. crews hope to have it back on for most people in the next hour. still, about 1800 people don't have power in mecklenburg county after the storms and all that wind yesterday.

clear out fallen trees and fix power lines. they say it's taken longer to restore these outages because the winds were so strong, crews could not make repairs. today, governor mccrory declared a state of emergency, including mecklenburg. >> in the mountains for some school districts to delay classes, tomorrow, avery schools will start later than usual. avery county will be on a two- hour delay, wataga county on a three-hour delay. dot crews were out battling high winds. clear snow covered roads, several inches of snow still on the ground near the tennessee line. in the foothills, downed trees and power lines called off classes all together. >> chief meteorologist steve

>> just a 60 miles an hour in the mountains, they are starting to calm down. our future cast suggests they will stay low and compared to what we've seen. pretty low tomorrow. check out these windchill values out in the mountains first thing tomorrow morning. it will feel like it's close to 0 toward boone and bener elk, not a lot of improvement out here for sure. temperatures by morning in the charlotte area will fall to about freezing. several degrees below our average. i'll show you how quick the warmup will kick in. >> keith monday will have updates every ten minutes starting at 4:30 a.m. >> developing tonight, there is an uptown charlotte school that will be closed tomorrow because of an outbreak of the norovirus. >> at least 70 students at metro school have gotten sick. new tonight, alexa spoke with parents very concerned it will spread further than it has. >> metro school will be closed

to disinfect this building. but tonight, some parents wonder why the school wasn't closed earlier in the week. >> this is principal todd with an important message. >> that's the voice mail parents received from metro school today, letting them know there would be no school tomorrow due to an outbreak of the norovirus. >> we know today, 63 students did not come to school, so we're assuming the majority is from this infection. today an additional seven students were sent home. >> mecklenburg county's health director said 70 students total and some teachers may have contracted this gastroenintestinal virus that causes diarrhea, and this particular school is a cause for greater concern, because the 250 students here have developmental disabilities.

phone. she is pictured on the left. kathy's daughter has a rare disorder and is nonverbal. >> most of the kids there have underlying health issues. one student has had heart surgery. >> we reached out after the health director assured, and school officials decided to cancel school for tomorrow. some parents wonder if that call should have been made sooner. and kathy said thankfully her daughter hasn't shown any symptoms of norovirus. no classes here at metro school tomorrow. reporting live uptown. channel 9 eyewitness news. >> thank you. we sent out a breaking news alert as soon as we learned about the norovirus outbreak.

just look under the news tab. he plans to meet with others to look into splitting from the district. other town mayors are considering separating from cms because of their concerns regarding student assignment. mayor taylor plans to meet with the others to create a task force to figure out what it district. >> firefighters in north and south carolina are relieved after police arrested this man, investigators have charged johnny with breaking into cars at fire departments in footer mill and greensboro. it's believed he is connected to several other cases across the area. police say they stole eight different firearms. they were able to crack down bing's car at north lake mall. >> a few days after charlotte passed an ordinance, act vitses in ashville want that city to do the same.

making that request. some think the ordinance isn't necessary. on monday, passed that by 7-4 vote. banning dediscrimination to many areas. it was the public restroom that upset so many people. gaming interest for a special session just to take up then before the ordinance takes effect. only the governor can call for that special session. new tonight, pro isis hackers, the group called sons army posted a video online showing the ceo's of facebook and twitter with computer generated bullets. the hackers say that they released the video because both sides have been working to close down proisis accounts. >> new tonight, drug and blood tests are on the way to the fbi after police say an impaired driver crashed in steel creek with two small children in the car.

into another car in steel creek road last week. they sited her for dwi, driving with a revoked license and wreckless driving. a baby and toddler were in the car, so they plan to file child abuse charges. the federal government, including north carolina, are trying to work on closing arguments in a major robo calling case that can change the way governments are doing business. suing dish network, they say the company broke the law and that it made 54 million robo calls to people on the do not call registry. the governments are demanding billions of dollars in penalties. >> a closed case unsolved for nearly a decade. >> new at 11:00, and only on 9, a mother opened up about the night that someone murdered her teenage son at a birthday party. >> what police say is unique about this case that makes them confident they can now find his

breaking news in kansas tonight, just learning police are identifying the gunman who went on a shooting rampage that ended at his workplace is 38- year-old, cedric ford. in the last hour, the sheriff said four people were killed by ford. 14 people injured and went to the hospital. police are investigating four different scenes, including excel industries where 15 people were shot. officers shot and killed ford tonight. still a very fluid situation out west, we'll monitor new information overnight and have it on daybreak starting at 4:30. >> this week marks nine years since a teenager's murder that remains unsolved. travis moore attended west charlotte high school. he was an honor student, great athlete, and by all accounts, a good kid. police believe that he was an innocent bystander killed when someone opened fire into a crowd at a birthday party. tonight, cmpd told me why they think now more than ever this

>> when you kill one person, you kill the entire family. >> nine years after her son, travis, was murdered, no one has been caught. >> my son was athletic, charismatic, friend loving. >> in february 2007, 17-year- old honor student, travis moore, attended a sweet 16 party for a friend at stone haven apartments on fernwood drive in east charlotte. >> about 600 open homicides. >> cmpd officer told me someone shared the invite on social media. >> dozens and dozens of uninvited guests showed up. most of which the party goer didn't know. >> up to 100 people crashed the event from different high schools all over mecklenburg county. some of them rivals. >> everybody is dancing and shouting east side, west side, someone pulled a gun out and fired a shot into the crowd. mr. moore just happened to be the unlucky person that was struck in the head.

it will be with us for a couple of days. as we turn the page, we warm up nicely. mid 60s by the end of the weekend and stay there for a couple days. the clouds melted away in the charlotte area. snow showers are all but done with across the high country. as i said a few minutes ago, at least the winds started to die down east of the mountains. still blowing heftily across the high country. wakeup forecast early tomorrow, hats and gloves, by 9:00 a.m. with that sunshine, we'll be in the upper 30s and we will see plenty of sunshine. not looking at any rain. the heavy winds are gone, but those cool temperatures will stick around tomorrow, especially early on, and we're going to struggle to warm up much. snow showers will come to an end. that is welcome news.

to upper 40s charlotte point south. we'll manage to climb 50 or. so charlotte down into the midlands, but barely struggle below freezing. maybe checks in with readings around 50 degrees tomorrow afternoon. tons of sunshine and a lot less wind than we saw today. chilly for this time of year. but plenty of sun. afternoon highs again right around that 50-degree mark and in chesterfield, a cool start, mid 30s, we rise to the mid 50s. charlotte 49ers baseball, nothing says spring like baseball. and after a cool day tomorrow, the niner rs will be on the field through the weekend. if you aren't taking in baseball, at least it will be a nice weekend to be outside. a little chilly up in boone tomorrow, at least the sun will get out. temperatures riding into the 50s.

, neighbors in a north charlotte subdivision are challenging each other to stop a theft problem. several reports of people following delivery trucks and stealing the packages in the subdivision. now neighbors are using the next door app to try to warn each other and to pick up each other's packages. >> tonight, a stillbirth has

information on the zika virus. zika had been linked to babies born with unusually small heads. that can signal brain damage. today's report found swelling and fluid buildup in other parts of the body. researchers also say the mother did not show any symptoms of zika virus, although it was found in the child's tissue. >> two more days and a puppy that survived a bb gunfire will go home with a little girl who needs him for her therapy. brody was shot 18 times with that bb gun. some are still lodged under his skin. the puppy will be adopted by this ten-year-old girl who lost her lifelong therapy dog recently. caylee's dog, woodrow died in january. >> i lost my buddy, i thought i lost half my heart. my heart, that half of my heart is back. he brought it back to me.

project safe pet says they had adoption requests for this pet from all over the world. they decided to allow caylee to adopt brody. >> a south carolina budget proposal would give farmers back in october $40 million. a committee approved $7.5 billion in the budget. that includes the funding for it. also, $375 million for education.
