in ashe and avery county and three hours for those in watauga county. let's get a check on the forecast. meteorologist keith monday is in severe weather center 9. they're dealing with the wind gusts up in the mountains this morning. >> still windy up there. they won't see much snow adding up in the mountains. they saw a few inches adding up. gusting near 30, jefferson, 40, boone. temperatures are below freezing so it will lead to slick travel. we'll monitor delays to see if it leads to cancellations. we're in the low to mid-30's. we have clouds spilling off of the mountains keeping us warmer, soitd it has been more clear. we're freezing through monroe and lancaster and chesterfield. the morning drive, all clear to start off. colder, though, in the 30s all morning long and the wind, much, much lighter here in charlotte compared to the last few days as we work thoot afternoon, we'll struggle to -- we work through the afternoon, we'll struggle

let's get you back out on the roads for an update on the traffic news. >> independence boulevard. we had reports of an accident at 2000-block. i looked at the d.o.t. cameras heading inbound towards the john belk and brookshire and i'm not spotting anything blocking any lanes. drive time technology, not picking up on any slow downs as well as we look near briar creek. green conditions heading inbound. 48 miles an hour. 14 minutes from matthews. no big issues. there we had reports of malfunctioning traffic lights. we're en route to check that out. it looks like they may have turned back on but we'll make sure. we've been monitoring the hundreds of outages in mecklenburg county. it has been two days since this storm hit. let's look at this map from duke energy. you can see the number of outages have dropped dramatically. you can see where folks are affected here on 118 in south charlotte. different locations.

and crews have cut the number in half since we talked to you at 11:00 last night. we have 800 outages in the county compared to 18:00 last night. most of it in -- 1,8:00 last night. most itself in the south charlotte area duke energy is expecting they won't be able to restore all of the p 11 tonight. a cold night for some folks. duke energy has made significant progress since the height of wednesday's storms when they there were 20,000 outages in the county. yesterday, crews were working all day to get the fallen trees out of the way. repair the power lines, they told us the high winds kept them from making the progress they hoped. >> we saw high winds that were greater than 35 miles an hour so we were not able to put our crews up in the elevated bucket truck to make repairs. >> so that really delayed them for sure. duke says crews in other states were tied up with their own

should be here sometime today to help out with the rest of the outages. we're monitoring the situation. we'll bring you updates throughout the morning on daybreak. a story we'll be following for your day ahead. a school in uptown will be closed today because of a norovirus outbreak. 70 students became sick at metro school. eyewitness news reporter joe bruno is live there now where crews plan to disinfect the building today. joe? >>reporter: stephanie only 250 students are enrolled in the metro school. none will be in class because of a norovirus outbreak. the mecklenburg county health director tells channel 970 students and some teachers may -- channel 9 that 70 students and some teachers may have been infected with the norovirus. the outbreak is a major concern, the 250 students who attend metro school have developmental

a parent is worried the children won't be able to handle the virus. >> they're fragile children and any illness like this is possibly deadly to them. >> and her daughter is not one of the students sick but cms officials are warning parents to monitor their children to make sure they don't exhibit any of these symptoms. joe bruno, channel 9, eyewitness news. >> thank you, we expect to learn if norovirus is responsible for making dozens students sick at wind debate university. university. the school says several students are sick with norovirus. tests are expected to come back today to define the illness. we'll follow the illnesses through out the day today and bring you any new developments as soon as we learn them on-air 5:04 now. today.

>> investigators believe he broke into dozens of firefighters vehicles all over north and south carolina. eyewitness news reporter angela hong is live outside the jail in uptown and right now, he is only charged in two . >>reporter: john, that's right. and being the suspect, he is here on the county jail on the two charges. investigators believe that he is behind 40 different cases of cars being broken into at fire stations across the carolinas. channel 9 has extensively covered these cases since february 11th. firefighters cars were busted into and guns, cash and ipads were stolen while firefighters were out on calls and sleeping. fire stations in greensboro, fort mill, charlotte, mooresville, kannapolis, huntersville, cornelius, and china grove were all hit. police say john was behind it

they were able to catch up bing after he left behind a key piece of evidence at fort mill this week. >> my detectives fomd the local retailer and were able to possible su. >>reporter: police arrested bing at the parking lot at north lake mall and found with him a gun from the greensboro theft and other stolen items. we dug into his past and out out he has been convicted of 13 felony breaking and entering cases in the past. reporting live from uptown, angela hong a, channel 9, eyewitness news. 10 people are behind bars facing drug and gun charges and channel 9 learned investigators have been watching some of them for years. they made the first court appearances yesterday. prosecutors say they ran a conspiracy that put around 120 pounds of crack and more than 300 pounds koef cane on the

driver into custody after a field sobriety test we're asking about the specific charms and whether anyone was injured in this crash. avery county schools are on a three-hour delay. watauga on a two delay. charlotte city leaders don't have a plan on how to find a new city manager. >> ron carlee said he would not take an extension after being questioned on his job performance. former mayor pro tem tells channel 9 he believes the challenges and friction between leaders may make it tough to find a replacement. >> if you have a good candidate who is comfortable in some city and he or she seize what has been -- sees what has been happening in charlotte, they won't be likely to want to move here. >> the charlotte chamber of commerce may help with the search if asked. carlee has not said when his last day will be but his contract exercise march 30th. channel 9 learned new developments overnight.

patrol has charged a woman accused of hitting four bicyclists in johnson county. she hit the group of bikers while she tried to pass them. williams says there was a car coming so she got back into her lane, hitting them. two of the cyclists suffered head injuries. she is charged with reckless driving and improper passing causing serious injury. new developments as a jet slammed into a run way as it was taking off. they suggested it was a blown tire but the ntsb says it was actually pilot error and not following procedure. the pilots did not input a piece of information into the flight computer so as the jet started to take off, it slammed into the run way. it made self changes to procedures, manuals and republican house leaders are sidelining a bill for the air traffic control station from the government to a private non-profit corporation.

before the house to temporarily extend the faa's authorization to operate. that expires march 31st. lawmakers opposed to privatization plans say it gives up important congressional authority in the case. the faa called charlotte a next gen city. charlotte douglas airport will be the first in the world to receive technology to handle plane congestion. the first phase will be in place by may along with less time on the air and on the run way. it will save $9.4 million a year. that program will cost about 5 billion to roll out across the country. >> this weekend will bring a host of job fairs across the area including the carowinds. it will host a job fair at open house from 1 to 5:00 at park. they're hoping to fill 4,000 positions from entry level to srpry positions. -- supervisory positions. they're holding a job fair

they say the two were fighting when the suspect shot her and took off. police have found that suspect's vehicle but no arrests have been made at this point. now, here is the good news, the deputy is expected to be okay. we'll let you know when that suspect is located. we'll have that for you on daybreak. i'm monitoring the investigation into a deadly shooting spree in kansas yesterday. overnight, we learned police in heston, which is north of witch tashgs have not determined a motive but have ruled out terrorism. four people are dead including the suspected shooter which friends have identified as this man here. cedric ford. investigators say he shot two people in different locations before storming inside of this building. this is where he worked, and opened fire. co-worker says ford had left work unexpectedly before returning with a gun. >> he yelled hey! and boom, boom, boom! he was just unloading on

but in the video you can see the officer pushing the boy down to the ground. his mother says the officer went too far leaving her son with bruises, scratches, and a strained . >> i understand teachers have a hard time, but at the same time, you don't put your hands on other people kids. you wouldn't like it if somebody came in your home. >> she and her son did not know the school's policy prohibits unauthorized recording on school grounds but officials say it spelled out in the school's code conduct scombrook a gastonia family is suing nc-dot over the death of a local father. the man was driving home on i-85 when he hit ice and crashed into trees. this new lawsuit claims e-mails show the officials knew about the problem spot a year prior to the deadly crash but only authorized a temporary fix.

this man right here will face a judge today accused of killing his 82-year-old mother. channel 9 was there as police brought him into custody last night more than two years after the crime. eyewitness news reporter angela hong is live outside the jail in uptown right now. angela? >>reporter: stephanie, right now, or man feldman is inside the jail. police told us they had enough evidence through interviews to arrest feldman for the murder of his 82-year-old mother. we were there as police brought feldman into cmpd headquarters. two years ago, he called 911 after he said he found his mother dead. police were back out in his south charlotte neighborhood collecting more evidence. autopsy reports show that the 82-year-old had been strangled and hit on the road. neighbors tell channel 9 they were relieved about the arrest. >> when someone who lives close

them, it is pretty shocking and devast. >> police have not released a motive for the killing and they tell us that they still have many more interviews to conduct regarding this case. reporting live in uptown, angela hong, channel 9, eyewitness news. >> thanks, angela. a woman is suing malaysia airlines and the government for $7.66 million over the death of her husband on flight 370. the flight disappeared mysteriously over the indian ocean on march 8th, 2014, with 239 people on board. lawyers expect more lawsuits in the coming days as we inch closer to the two-year filing deadline over air accidents set by a global aviation agreement. investigators are searching for that wreckage. google says it will back apple in the battle with the fbi over the security of the iphone. apple asked a judge to evacuatate a federal order to -- vacate a federal order to open the iphone belonging to one of the san bernardino shooters.

. time is 5:53 giving you live pictures from blowing rock. you can see snow still on those sidewalks and in the grass but it looks like the streets have been cleared pretty well from plows. they got snow from yesterday but we're noticing that the wind is still pretty strong up there. in fact, we had a picture from this. it showed an american flag that was really whipping in the wind and meteorologist keith monday mentioned that those areas are dealing with the wind gusts. we'll have the full forecast for you, oh, look at the streetlights. we'll have the full forecast in just a few minutes. north carolina health officials say the mumps outbreak has not spread. they released an update showing no new cases in mecklenburg, cabarrus or iredell counties.
