>> the shooter then takes that victim's car, travels on up here to where excel is. >> reporter: ford arrives at excel industries in heston. he shot one person in the parking lot of the industrial plant before going inside. >> everyone's trying to get out of killed and 14 others injured before a deputy took ford down. >> the only reason he stopped shooting is because that officer stopped the shooter. >> reporter: hundreds of employees escaped the building. their family and friends anxiously waiting outside. >> i finally got to see him. i didn't want to let him go. >> reporter: now safely reunited with his wife, jared says ford was a hard guy to get to know. >> really quiet. he really didn't say much. >> reporter: months ago, ford posted this picture and this video of himself on facebook

he had an extensive criminal record, including arrests for burglary and battery. less than two hours before his rampage, deputies served ford with a protection order at work. they said he was upset and he left the plant. bazi kanani, abc news, washington. new information this midday in the investigation into firefighter car break-ins. at least eight guns may still be missing. channel 9 told you yesterday police arrested johnny bing for a series of car break-ins. just two hours ago, we obtained a copy of the search warrant, it shows a firefighter at the flint hill fire department found a wal-mart receipt for ammunition. that receipt led them to a wal- mart where police found the suspect on surveillance. police searched a motel and recovered two of the firefighter's stolen ipads. the warrant says the gun stolen from greensboro was found in bing's car. a man accused of murdering his 82-year-old mother will

we first told you about the arrest as breaking news yesterday at 5:00. mark becker is live outside the courthouse where that suspect will soon answer to murder charges more than two years after the crime. mark? >> reporter: stephanie, we specter win feldman to be in the courtroom here. he will show up in person. he will be shackled. that's the protocol when someone's charged with a first- degree murder. what we don't know at this point is whether or not he'll have an attorney representing him on those charges. we were there as police led feldman out of the police department on his way to jail. police tell us he had gone to the department there yesterday voluntarily, and when he left, he was charged with killing his 82-year-old mother, ina feldman new evidence in the case led them to file charges more than two years after feldman called 911 to say he found his mother dead in her home off caramel road in early february of 2014.

search warrants to search feldman's home and office yesterday. but we don't know what if any evidence they seized in those searches. feldman's court appearance here should be brief. we don't know if his wife will be here or any other family members. we are told that his wife was with him yesterday as he was questioned at cmpd headquarters. mark becker, channel 9 eyewitness news. developing in south carolina this midday, just in the past two hours, we learned a deputy who was shot this body armor. the deputy stopped a suspicious vehicle in berkeley county and car. her. he ran into a house in north charleston and barricaded himself. inside. they believe he shot himself. shot him. she's in the hospital and is expected to survive.

we have learned a store clerk was pistol whipped and kidnapped in a violent armed robbery in hickory. it happened at the fast and area. police say the robber hit the clerk in the head with his gun before stealing cash and forcing him to drive away from the store. investigators say the clerk had only minor injuries and was forced out of the car by the the vehicle. today uptown charlotte is packed with fans here for the ciaa games. and of course the events that go along with it. there's a fan fest and a step show at the convention center today. charlotte declared it an extraordinary event giving police more authority for searches to keep people safe. the ciaa inducted its 2016 hall of fame class including mark cheryl who played basketball at johnson c smith and is in his 23rd season as an assistant coach there. a well known voice in the african american community has died. former city councilman malachi

after a long battle with cancer. green served on city council from 1995 through 1999 but he was still a strong and squint consistent political player in charlotte for decades. the city lost an incredible public servant, green was 73. today a school in uptown charlotte is closed because of a norovirus out break. crews are sanitizing the school now. the mecklenburg county health director tells channel 970 students at metro school -- 70 students at metro school and teachers may have the virus. >> they're fragile children, and any illness like this is probably deadly to them. >> cms is telling parents to monitor their children closely for symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

not an out break at wingot university is linked to nor you virus. several dozen students reported symptoms similar to the virus during the past two days. test results are due back today. count on channel 9 to continue following both these illnesses throughout the day today and we'll bring you new developments as soon as we learn them on air and online at wsoctv.com. new at noon, rock hill police are trying to track down the man who chased a jogger with a knife. the woman told police she was running near laurel wood cemetery yesterday when the armed man started chasing her. she ran into a nearby credit union to escape. surveillance cameras showed the man who then took off. officers have not made any we are asking for more information and we'll bring you the latest today starting at 5:00 on eyewitness news. right now charlotte renters and condo owners are voicing their concerns about a city study to eliminate trash pick up. the city has been considering years.

i'll explain hend. stocks are mixed this midday, even after reports showing the u.s. economy grew more than expected. the dow is down 34 points. the nasdaq is little changed. duke energy crews are still scrambling to repair power to hundreds of customers after wednesday's storms. take a look here though, outages spiked back up in mecklenburg county to about 930. they dropped to about 340 in gaston county. we saw about 1800 outages in mecklenburg county alone last night. now at the height of wednesday's storm, there were mecklenburg county. yesterday, crews worked all day to clear fallen trees and repair power lines, but they told us the wind kept them from making the progress they had hoped. >> we saw high winds that were greater than 35 miles per hour. so we were not able to put our

bucket truck to make repairs. >> duke says crews in other states were tied up with their own storm damage yesterday but they should be here today to help with the rest of the outages. crews have cleaned up 20,000-pounds of gypsum after a truck tipped over on the i 84 ramp near the brookshire boulevard. channel 9 was first at the scene and learned from troopers that the driver lost control but wasn't hurt. the ramp was closed for a short time. the driver was coming from catawba county. taking a swing ahead of super tuesday. the jabs that made last night's debate seem more like a heavy weight fight. the steps local businesses

after this, candidates will turn their attention to super tuesday. count on channel 9 to bring you complete coverage of the primary in south carolina. watch on air on wsoctv.com. and on social media. new at noon, local business owners are preparing for a potential active shooter situation. more than 100 people participated in active shooter training this morning in the weston hotel in uptown. the security company, the universal protection service hosted a seminar with the charlotte mecklenburg police. security experts say it's better to be over prepared. >> the more preparation we can provide for them and the more training we can give them is clearly an advantage for them. >> officer chris cop gave the presentation. he's a crime prevention specialist with charlotte mecklenburg police. an suv flipped near statesville road before 5:00 this morning. channel 9 was there.

police took the driver into test. we're asking for the driver's name and charges this midday. we have a new safety alert to warn you about this midday, even flow is recalling 56,000 child safety seats. the company says children can loosen the internal harness increasing the risk of injury in a crass. the recall covers transitions three in one combination booster seats made from december 2014 through last month. even flow says it only effects seats when they're used as forward facing. even flow will send effected issue. tomorrow charlotte douglas international airport is hosting a job fair. a variety of companies are offering full time, part time, seasonal, and temporary employment, hundreds of positions are open. including retail, airline services and maintenance. the fair begins at 10:00 tomorrow morning. it runs through 2:00 at the clt center on wilkinson boulevard.

to our weather that's going to bring much needed warm up in severe weather center 9. >> i'm all ready seeing the sunshine here today. less wind in town. up in the mountains, here's the view from resortcams.com in blowing rock. done with. no more accumulation. the road looks pretty good. improving conditions for the mowns. later today. though. they're in the mid to upper 20s. and windchill values are still in the teens. we are at 48 in charlotte with a nice amount of sunshine. salisbury, statesville, hickory, all in the low to mid 40s. and the wind speeds will relax more through the day in the mountains. still between 10 to 15 miles per hour. city. still breezy through the day today. in the high country, the winds have been calming all morning and we'll continue that trend as we head into the afternoon. if you're heading out and about in uptown, the ciaa tournament is continuing as we get ready

we'll top out at 51 in charlotte. less wind will make it feel better out there. it all ready does. at 9:00, we're down to 40. and with that lighter wind in place, temperatures are going to bottom out. that combined with a clear sky for the rest of the afternoon means a quiet afternoon and evening is ahead of us. in the mountains, the clouds will thin out as we head into the evening. over night tonight, clear sky and light wind, it's cold. 26 out the door tomorrow morning. in charlotte, mid to low 20s on the i-40 corridor. mountains. but once we get passed tomorrow morning, things will slowly but surely improve. outdoor plans early on saturday, fun event down in rock hill, the krispy kreme race, you run two miles, you eat a dozen donuts, you run again, what happens after, i temperatures starting around freezing at 8:00. and lower 40s by 10:00. but over all the weekend is advertising a warm up. mid 50s on saturday.

police say a woman accused of causing a bible to try to sneak drugs into jail checked out certain bibles for the crime. they say she was trying to get the drugs to her son who's in jail on nine charges related to break-ins. but jail staff discovered the

with the book's binding. >> she wasn't really being too smart about it. this day in time, you don't take any chances on any material that's to be delivered to an offender. >> she faces a felony charge of providing drugs to an inmate. tonight a professor will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the friendship nine's jail no bail arrest. they were jailed in 1961 after a sit-in protest during the civil rights movement. the event begins at 6:00 on crawford road. the surviving members will talk about their experience and current civil rights efforts. in the next three hours, cornelius town commissioners will consider their future with a group uniting communities near lake norman. they'll decide if they want to remain part of the lake norman transportation commission. earlier this month, commissioners voted to leave the group. they haven't said why.

stop the i-77 toll lanes. president obama is touting the economic stimulus bill. he signed it shortly after taking office seven years ago. critics say taxpayers got too little in exchange for such a big investment. is president will visit a factory whose company got $96 million under that bill. the pentagon launched a new cyber war against isis. it's in effort to take away the terrorist group's ability to recruit on social media. the u.s. cyber command team at fort meade maryland is also trying to keep the group from videos. tomorrow job seekers can fairs. carowinds will hold a job fair and open house at the park. it's looking to fill 4,000 openings from entry level to supervisor positions. it includes, rides,
