the heart of charlotte on one of the busiest weekends. >> it is crazy. i came down here. >> in the last two hours we learned these three suspects here were in town for the ciaa events. >> they fired dozens shots into a van on south caldwell street outside the hyatt hotel early this morning. new tonight, eyewitness news reporter alexa ashwell spoke to people who heard the gunshots. ? >>reporter: i asked cmpd why the suspects were in charlotte after finding out they're from neighboring states. they confirm the suspects were here for ciaa events as were thousands of other people, innocent people, who could have been hit easily by the bullets you can see where the bullets went through the window. >> it just kept going and kept going. and i said to my husband, i said, i think they're shotted. >> jessica was confirmed as they

and saw this van. it was peppered with dozens bullet holes, gunshots that woke her up early this morning. >> it is just too bad that someone really doesn't guard life enough to just spray all of those bullets. >>reporter: not long after this interview, cmpd announced they arrested these three men. police say they saw one man jump into a car after firing the shots. they stopped the alternative ma a mile away here on west 5th street. one suspect, wright, got out and ran. he was arrested inside a parking deck. police said he was armed with an an ak-47 and a pistol and that the weapons found on him as well as two others seized from the cars matched shell casings found at the scene. >> he was sitting there and one there and one there. >> this van helped the woman sitting in the red car when the shooting happened. he is president of the hoa for sky condominiums. >> she didn't get hit. she is probably one of the luckiest.

police said up to 50 shots were fired during one of the busiest weekends with the ciaa tournament. >> i'm from charlotte. that is . >> another look at the plywood put up where bullets pierced through the windows of this building. i asked and police said this wasn't a random act of violence but little information is being released about the intended targets and motive in the shooting. reporting live uptown, alexa ashwell. channel 9, eyewitness news. several venues were shut down over ciaa weekend because of code violations. in addition to that, cmpd arrested nine people. four were alcohol related. three were assault and two were trespassing incidents. the fire department will have specific numbers and information on the venues that were closed tomorrow. new at, police are investigating a homicide after shots were fired at a party in gaston county.

avenue in mount holly. a man was shot and other people took him to the hospital where he later died. channel 9 spoke to neighbors this afternoon who told us the home owners have had disruptive parties all weekend. police have not said if they have any suspects. new development in iredell county man accused of leading deputies on a chase in a stolen dump truck will be sentenced in court tomorrow. it is a case we've covered since july of 2014. james keith capital is accused of robbing a -- james keith call is accused of robbing a man at a prus van. it is it -- prus van. it spurred a stand off. in 2013 i spoke with a lieutenant who was childhood friends with him. he is not a trained negotiator but he talked to him and eventually talked him into giving up peacefully. kannapolis police are investigating a road rage shooting. witnesses told channel 9 it happened around 9:30 this morning on orphanage road near a

a man told us he heard the accident and when he walked outside. he said he saw one driver approach the other car and shoot a man. >> it was very surprising. especially being right in front of a church. you don't think you'll see that on a sunday morning. >> two good sa marians, one -- two good samaritans, one a paramedic and one a nurse helped. hear from one tonight at 11 about who else was in the car she was trying to keep calm. police are investigating a three vehicle crash on i-77. it happened in the northbound lanes near exit 28 near cornelius. nobody was hurt in that crash but another wreck down the road could be causing heavier traffic in our area we're asking how serious the second accident is. tonight, democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is coming off of a big win in south carolina.

you can participate in early voting through march 12th. to find out where to vote early go to wsoctv.com for a full list. you'll find it under our news tab. new at six, pageland police say someone went into a cvs armed with a gun and demanded drugs. it happened at the store north van mingle boulevard. police say they're looking for the suspect. no one was hurt. north carolina helmet officials are expected to give -- health officials are expected to give an update on the number of mumps cases this week. so far there have been three confirmed cases across mecklenburg, cabarrus, and iredell counties. two of those were linked to lowe's headquarters in mooresville. there are nine other probable cases, the state said earlier this week, some of those people have already fully recovered. this week, neighbors near river bend steam station will have a chance to talk to state officials about coal ash clean up. river bend has been classified

means the coal ash will have to be removed by 2019. the state will have similar meetings in each county where duke has a coal ash pond. tuesday's meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at gaston college in dallas. tomorrow, charlotte douglas airport will start demolition to make space for concourse a expansion. the airport will tear down rental car buildings along rental car road. a deputy aviation director will a address the specific changes on the way. the event is tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.. burke county officials have come up with a new early voting site after a fire burned through the old hildebrand high school. the gym at the school was supposed to be an early voting and precinct site. we brought you live video last monday as a video tore through a building. our partners report the voting site will be point of viewed to hildebrand methodist church next door. fire investigators haven't determined what started the fire.

electrical problem or arson. the burke county marshall told the herald, investigators atf haven't been able to go back into the building for safety concerns. residents have fought to save the building from demolition after town leaders voted to tear it down. new at six, south carolina counties have only $4 million out of 216 million that was set aside for road projects last year. the state newspaper reports 22 counties have not even submitted plans to the d.o.t.. those counties say they're solidifying which counties they need it for. they could allo$250 million to road repairs in this year's budget. work will continue tomorrow on roosevelt wilson park in davidson. town leaders say crews will demolish the asphalt walk way and sell papers at end of the park and add benches throughout. the work is expected to wrap up in may. the size of the seats on

in the last 10 mipz, the park superintendent at crowder's mountain told channel 9 a man in his 20's fell and has serious injuries. he was air lifted to the hospital. >> officials tell us they responded to the boulder access point off of bethlehem road. our crew arrived at the scene. we'll bring you updates on-air and online as soon as we get them. new information tonight in a deadly officer involved shooting outside of washington dc. an army staff sergeant assigned to the pentagon will be in court tomorrow facing murder charges after police say he shot and killed a rookie officer during her first day on the job. >> investigators say ronald hamilton shot three officers, killing ashley guindon last night in woodbridge virginia. they were responding to the area for a domestic related call. the prosecutor says hamilton had already killed his wife before the officers arrived.

they say he opened fire on them, killing officer guindon. today the chief recognized how special she was. >> she clearly had a passion to serve others in a way that went beyond herself. >> guindon had been sworn into the department on friday. she previously served in the air force reserves. two others were injured in the shooting. we brought you this at breaking news at 11. neighbors heard gunshots and saw officers running with guns drawn. >> one u.s. lawmaker wants the faa to establish seat size rules for all airlines. senator chuck schumer from new york is requesting commercial airlines have a minimum seat size on flights. he says airlines have been reducing leg room on planes. he vowed to add an amendment to the faa reauthorization bill that would force airlines to all

is close to or beyond 70 in chester, very warm there even thorough the higher terrain. we'll clear out here over caldwell county with a high of around 60. we'll track rain for more areas by wednesday as i look at the threat tracker. heavy rain will be the big issue. we might get a couple thunderstorms out of this, though. futurecast times this out in the morning time and then we'll watch this cooler air get closer to charlotte. that will probably bring things back to more winter kind of numbers by the e. of the week. an inch of rain out of this by calming down. high of around 55 by friday. your weekend is always in view. i think we'll clear it out by saturday and sunday and high temperatures may be in the middle 50s slightly cooler than what is happening now. it is unbelievable. one more repeat tomorrow.
