this go around, unlike last week, the heaviest weather is going to pass south of us and move through the atlanta metro to wind damage, heavy winds and the midlands. that's not going to move into the charlotte area. what we are seeing more of a rain. some of it fairly heavy. you saw some heavier rain a short time ago. that's all sliding to the east. it is now through monroe and indian trail. 10:15, about 10:25 or so. north of west of charlotte, lincolnton, down toward shelby, moderate to heavier rain. the heaviest rain on the map over iredale, alexander, rain rates here upwards of an inch an hour. that is sliding to the east through conover and harmony. the good news is, it's a one and done. this rain moves out by 2:00 a.m. by the time we get up in the morning, we're clear. i'll show you what kind of chill we'll face. >> breaking news, graphic new details on a triple homicide investigation involving a well known political consultant in

>> police say that his wife confessed to killing him and two others found naked at the couple's home. new tonight, eyewitness news reporter, jenna deary learns more about the couple's past. jenna. >> reporter: erica, crystal remains behind these doors tonight at the gaston county jail. neighbors i spoke with told me the couple had a relationship, but never could they imagine the story police have revealed tonight. tonight, gaston county police are standing watch over house where police found a gruesome murder scene yesterday involving a praise gop political consultant. giovani gambino. crystal appeared in court today. hours after confessing to police she shot and killed her husband and two other people. all found dead and naked. two bodies reportedly found in a bedroom, another dragged outside.

other two victims as 33-year- old, stephanie sanchez, and 39- year-old, jeffrey gillion. investigators told our news partners the three victims met online and crystal gambino found them together before she went to her gun. the details are not only scandalous, but shocking to those who knew giovani. >> she was a personal friend of mine. i don't know what to think about that. certainly does not change my opinion or my higher regard for gio. >> the candidate, albert expressed his disbelief by phone. she was working on his campaign before he was killed. >> i don't know what he did in his private time. i don't know what he was doing on that evening of his death. as i said, he's my friend. >> police say they are still sorting out all of the relationships between everyone involved in this investigation.

there was a history of domestic issues between the gambinos. this investigation will continue to evolve and we will continue to follow it. reporting live in gaston county, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> thank you, jenna. breaking news out of indianland tonight. an 8-year-old riding a bicycle has been air lifted to cmc after getting hit by a car. this happened just after 6:00 tonight on glenn laurel drive in indian land. authorities say the child who was not wearing a helmet went through a stop sign and collided with the car. we're asking how they are doing and if the driver will face charges. tomorrow, the leader of grass roots coalition wants to meet with cmpd's chief after seeing this video. an officer throwing punches at a suspect on the ground. we showed you this first at 5:00. and community leaders told eyewitness news reporter, they certainly want answers. >> i don't like to cast a stone until i have questions answered. i did have three areas of

>> robert spent time today watching the video, which shows 17 pd officers and a trooper surrounding hit-and-run suspect, malcolm glenn elliot. in the 9 second video, you can see one officer hit elliot several times. >> it escalated to the use of force, punching the person 7, 8, 9 times. why that was needed. >> he is with safe coalition north carolina. he worked with cmpd for three years of criminal justice reform. he is concerned this may be a case of excessive force. >> i didn't see anything that showed deescalation. >> the video was taken by a neighbor at the apartments at matthews. cmpd says the suspect was involved in a hit-and-run near independence boulevard and village lake drive. a trooper went after him and cmpd responded to assist. officers say they found his blue mazda at the apartment complex and that elliot ran and

him in handcuffs. now internal affairs is investigating whether they used excessive force. >> got seven cops there. one person. is it that hard and difficult to take down one person? >> if that person is guilty, he wants swift action taken against him. a spokesperson says internal affairs is investigating. reporting from cmpd headquarters, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> and we did reach out to several city council members to see what they think about that video tonight. so far, they decided not to comment. >> breaking news tonight in just the past two hours, a judge found this woman guilty of squatting in a large south eyewitness news reporter was there in @ courtroom tonight as make her case. >> right before the judge made his ruling in just the past couple hours, we had a chance to hear on the stand. should she represented herself

today, much of the time was spent with the judge questioning her on what right she had and what proof she had to be in that home. >> i have superior knowledge on a lot of things. ultimately, the judge never got the proof he was looking for. she was found guilty on six of the seven charges against her. they stem from her arrest at this 5200 square foot home in the piper glenn neighborhood. it was a foreclosure from the bank, but she claimed there was a private agreement between the bank and something called the international indigenous trust. this case has gotten identified because she identifies as a national. they are often tied pho squatting cases as well as lengthy lawsuits against authorities. but tonight, prosecutors say this was about woman who was given a chance to leave, but refused. >> had never write whatsoever to be in that house.

avoid prison time if she supervised probation period. part of that is the demand that she not return to the home. at the mecklenburg county courthouse, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> breaking news in the last two hours tonight, the town council reinstated larry brown. hand. it's unanimous. >> some wearing shirts in you heard cheering. chief brown has been off the job for four months during a sled investigation. the council has not said what he was accused of doing. the chief spoke to channel 9 about what he plans for the future. move forward and make the

a drug suspect. earlier tonight, demonstrators took to the streets calling for change after the death of 24- year-old, ahkeel jenkins on monday. we are hearing police radio traffic from the moments that came after the shooting. >> shot fired right here. on e street. >> raleigh police have turned over that investigation to the fbi. tonight, that officer is on administrative leave. >> new at 11:00. channel 9 spoke with friends of this teenager killed in a crash this morning on windy grove road. cmpd said three west mecklenburg high school students were in the car when this crash happened. >> police say 15-year-old, heaven, was sitting in the backseat of this car when it went off the road and hit a tree. this afternoon, friends posted a cross where her young life ended. they hung flowers and wrote messages of love. >> i see my son suffering a lot because heaven was my son's best friend.

by the crash scene this afternoon to see if what she had heard was real. her son's best friend gone in an instant. >> i can't imagine the pain on the part of heaven's father. >> investigators tell us two other students were in the car, too, and injured along with the driver. investigators say that driver was speeding and lost control and crashed into a tree. >> break my heart. >> two classmates came by the memorial to say good-bye. they felt the need to be here. >> i didn't hang out with her that much and we didn't have a good friendship. but i felt like i needed to pay my respect. >> the school will have counselors on campus to help stints. >> six families are out of their home after a huge apartment fire. chopper 9 flew over the scene on evan port road this afternoon. several people jumped out of the windows to get to safety.

>> in the past four hours, a community came together to mourn the death of this beloved couple killed in an explosion at their home in cleveland county. >> eyewitness news reporter was there for tonight's vigil honoring their lives. elsa. >> reporter: it was clear from the prayers and thoughts shared here tonight that the newtons were a much loved couple and this is a close knit community. shattered by this loss. >> they were truly good friends. they'll be missed for a long time to come. >> the community packed this church tuesday evening to share prayer, tears, and hope after what has been a devastating loss. >> everybody here loves them. you know, this is a tight community as a town and just a big loss. >> there's a mighty good family, you couldn't ask for anybody to be nicer to you than what j.b. and naomi newton was. >> he lived next door to them for 45 years.

about an inch an hour, that heavier rain is sliding northeast, the western shore of the lake about 11:30. mountain by a quarter to 12:00. the other band of heavy rain stretches along highway 10. northeast all the way to claire monte. this is the way it looked a short time ago. as the rain came in. wow, and it come in hard. we talked about that was the greatest risk as this came in tonight. briefly heavy rain and some gusty winds. heavier rain through stoney point, that's going to continue to slide through the northeast. taylorsville now. hour. by the time you get up tomorrow morning, it's history. unfortunately, so is the warmth. 20s across the high country and that's not the last of the issues. john ahrens. >> as that cool air moves in t

hurry. all the way through your wednesday, you're talking about wind gusts at least to 30 miles an hour and sometimes higher, up to 45 up in boone. midday, staying pretty steady at 31 miles per hour during the afternoon. we think the biggest difference this is going to make is for the windchills at the bus stop tomorrow. it's going to feel like 6 outside in boone and 10 up in jefferson by 8:00 in the morning. for the rest of the day, we have some sunshine. >> we do. we'll start with the sun first thing tomorrow, lower 40s and unlike the last couple of days, sunshine warmed us up. that is not going to be the case tomorrow. we will see sun, but not a lot of warmth. lunchtime, future cast stops, chesterfield, lancaster, charlotte will likely click 50,

to what we dealt with. davidson, chilly breeze, thermometer may say it's 50 in the afternoon. in gastonia, temperatures in the lower 50s and that gusty breeze, temperatures climb to the lower 50s tomorrow afternoon with that chilly start. next system comes at us on late thursday into friday. this one not quite as much moisture. some blue up in the mountains, there may be wet snow flakes and much like tonight, it's gone by the time you get up. and slowly we will start to warm up after several days in the 50s. 60 on sunday and i had a look at the long range guidance. 70% chance of above average temperatures from now through the 15th. while we have a cool stretch on the way, it won't last. i'm seeing signs of the 70s returning next week.

s, a bush to ban th state lawmakers will discuss charlotte's controversial antidediscrimination ordinance when the short session starts on april 25. tim moore says six lawmakers are working on legislation that would put a statewide ban on the part of the law that allows people to use the bathroom based on the gender that they identify with. >> new at 11:00, north carolina's department of environmental quality held their first of many scheduled public hearings on coal ash clean up. the residents packed into tonight's meeting focusing on the steam station. they say duke energy is not moving fast enough on this cleanup.
