for the morning drive. now from the news team covering the carolinas, this is channel 9 eyewitness news at 11:00. >> atlanta, columbia, charleston, all cities that charlotte's mayor says are booming because of their welcoming attitudes. new at 11:00, hours after calling out state leaders, mayor roberts tells channel 9 why stopping the nondediscrimination ordinance will hurt charlotte's bottom line. >> and today, house speaker, tom moore called for a special session to take on the charlotte ordinance, which in part would allow people to use

identify with that passed less than two weeks ago. i'm scott wickersham. >> and i'm erica bryant. new tonight, eyewitness news reporter, dashawn brown spoke to her about the public statement that she made against state leaders. dashawn. >> erica, the mayor listed job growth and tourism as two areas it could suffer if this ordinance is reversed. opponents, meanwhile, are still focused on safety. in the hours after house speaker tim moore called for a special session to take on charlotte's lbgt ordinance, city mayor, jennifer roberts, responded with strong words of her own. >> i hope they will turn their attention to those things we know are impacting all of us. >> roberts tweeted she was shocked the general assembly was still considering the session. and said reversing the ordinance could hurt charlotte's economy.

competitors like atlanta, columbia, myrtle beach, all cities where a similar ordinance exists. >> i know there are more than 200 cities and counties around the country who have had these types of ordinances in place for years. >> late thursday, opponents of the ordinance listed safety, still among its number one concerns. part of the ordinance allows people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. >> this is not a -- >> it is part of the reason camy mueller launched this statewide petition urging state lawmakers to stop it. >> does one thing and it's something that we're not able to do through any other capacity, and that is to prevent the charlotte bathroom ordinance from going into place in the first place. >> for now, that state ordinance is set to go, or at least that city ordinance is set to go into effect on april

here's the last thing we have to keep an eye on. light fog beginning to form from i-40 north into the mountains. at this point, i don't anticipate a widespread problem. up in the high country where temperatures will be below freezing. roads may be slick in the mountains, for the metro, east of the high country, just cool with left over clouds. >> before you head out tomorrow morning, watch eyewitness news daybreak. we have weather and traffic every ten minutes starting at 4:30. >> new tonight at 11:00, police arrested a teenager accused of bringing a gun to school. investigators say travis minton brought a gun to harding university school yesterday. police there say that there were seven bullets inside the gun. this arrest comes just weeks after channel 9 investigated security in local schools. uncovering more than a dozen cases of dangerous weapons being brought to school. the board of education chair told us the daily use of metal detectors could send the wrong message.

public safety officials in chesterfield county layed out their 30 day plan after more than half the town police force walked off the job. last night, city leaders named county sheriff, jay brooks, interim police chief. for now, pageland chief larry brown will report to him. tonight, the sheriff told us he has three deputies and one officer ready to cover each shift. and right now, he's trying to get some of those officers to consider to come back to the job. >> we are working with them to help save, you know, save their career. i think a lot of those decisions that were made is in the heat of the moment. >> pageland chief, larry brown, was off the job for four months investigation. so far, both town council and brooks declined to comment on why he was being investigated. just in the past two hours, unc charlotte confirmed there's campus. a spokesperson for the university says that a student developed the symptoms last

yesterday show that it is positive. the university says the student has been in isolation and is no longer showing symptoms. that brings the total number of confirmed or probable cases in the state to 15. now some of those cases link back to lowe's corporate headquarters. it was two weeks ago that health officials said that two employees at the support center there tested positive for the virus. channel 9 has been investigating how a texas bankruptcy case could impact the i-77 toll project since we first reported it as breaking news last night at 11:00. >> new tonight, eyewitness news reporter learned about a new push from local businesses now to try and stop the tolls. >> scott, erica, just last month, the goal was to send a clear message to the governor that toll lanes here would impact their vote. now they are using this bankruptcy filing as fuel to the fire. >> tonight, we're getting a

this flier made by i-77 business plan. the group of local business leaders strongly oppose to toll lanes from charlotte to morrisville, plan to print 15,000 copies by saturday. then distribute them throughout communities. why? in hopes this simple message to governor pat mccrory will be the push they need. >> cooper and governor mccrory that this is a major issue and will have significant impact in november. >> the governor said he is sending his transportation secretary to texas on monday for discussions with cintra. after the bankruptcy filing on its sister project on state highway 130 in texas. cintra maintains the bankruptcy filing won't affect the project here. ncdot tried to calm fears by saying i-77 mobility partners contract protects taxpayers

three different crime scenes. police believe the shooting actual happened on caps hill mine road. they found the victim, cecil thomas a mile and a half away in a car. all new at 11:00, police made an arrest in a west charlotte arson case. brown broke into a home in december on bradford drive and set it on fire while people were inside. that fire caused $20,000 in damage. the police report does not say if anyone was hurt in that fire. new information tonight, police say that tyreke oliver are facing charges after shots were fired in a busy south end neighborhood. we brought this to you as breaking news yesterday at 5:00. at least two cars were hit by bullets, but no people were injured. oliver is facing a drug charge, washington is charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling. >> more fiery exchanges and attacks between the leading gop candidates tonight. the latest republican debate ended just five minutes ago.

new information tonight in the findings of an autopsy report released in an officer involved shooting in raleigh. >> the report says that he was shot in his right chest area, left forearm, right upper arm, and right shoulder. but it does not say if he was shot facing toward or away from that officer when this happened. witnesses said the 24-year-old was running away when the officer shot him in the back, what happened. state bureau of investigation has been speaking to witnesses and the district attorney says the medical examiner still looking into how and where the bullets entered his body. >> we will continue to do everything we can to talk to people within the community who might have seen what happened and also, most importantly, any time you have an investigation like this, there will be

the day and we have to wait for that to be analyzed. >> a new report from raleigh's police chief, trying to arrest denkins. he pulled out a gun from the front of his waistband. now the shooting has led to protesting in raleigh. denkins family insists he was not armed. >> we've been asking all week long for a thorough investigation and as the d.a. released, these are the preliminary steps. we are asking everyone to keep the family in their hearts and prayers because obviously, as more information is coming out. >> the north carolina state crime lab is trying to expedite the analysis. >> new at 11:00, alabama police officer who is white is charged with murder accused of shooting and killing a black man. officer aaron smith is being

authorities say smith shot and killed gregory gun last week outside a montgomery home after a struggle. tomorrow, friends and families are set to say their final good- byes to this beloved couple killed in a tragic accident. j.b. and naomi newton died on sunday night. investigators say a car crashed into their home, hit a propane tank, and caused an explosion. they weren't able to get out in time. the funeral is tomorrow at 4:00 at st. paul's baptist church in cleveland county. the frame will receive friends before that at the church fellowship hall. >> new tonight, a charlotte gun shop says they want to make sure this kind of heist doesn't happen at their store. this is video from houston, texas, where thieves used a truck and a chain to break into the store. it took two minutes to steal 50 weapons. we called hayat gun shop, they told channel 9 they have taken steps to prevent this, but they didn't say exactly what. >> in the last four hours, residents gathered to give the

feedback about proposed body cameras for officers. the department also asked for input on its current policies, like the existing in car programs. they came to the meeting for a better understanding of how police are keeping them safe. >> the better it is to document things that are going on, the safer we are in the community as well as the police department. it is a way to hold everybody accountable of their actions and future actions. >> now if you miss the meeting tonight, there's another public session. it takes place on monday at concord police headquarters starting at 6:00. this weekend is the visitation for a west mecklenburg high school student killed in a car crash. police say that austin locke was driving on windy grove road when he lost control and crashed into a tree tuesday morning, 15-year-old, heaven died in that crash. the visitation is sunday at forest lawn funeral home. the funeral is monday, but not open to the public. in lieu of flowers, the family

pay for the funeral. our chief meteorologist is standing by, steve, you say the rain is out of here for now? >> yeah, we forecast this to be a quick hitter and boy did it live up to that. this rain came and gone, was gone in about three hours time. last shower just crossed the pd river. still have some left over clouds. that's all one or two mountain snow showers can't be ruled out. the storm is basically done by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow, many of us start to see lone clouds part. we'll start at around the middle 30s in most neighborhoods in and around charlotte. closer to freezing up towards statesville and hickory and below freezing in the mountains. bus stop forecast early on tomorrow, you will need a coat for sure, but we will dry things out, mid 30s early on, lower 40s as the kids get into school and rapid improvement. whatever clouds we have should be gone in a matter of an hour or two tomorrow morning. the mountains will still see some clouds.

snow showers are pretty much over and done with, even in the mountains. not a big travel issue. as far as temperatures go, you know, not bad for early march. latest future cast suggesting right around 50 east of the mountains. still in the 30s to 40 in the high country and warm into the mid, maybe upper 50s tomorrow afternoon. 59 is our average high. so that's at least a step in the right direction. neighborhood forecast up town tomorrow, maybe heading out for lunch. around 50. sky wills be fair. mid 50s as we move through the afternoon. neighborhood forecast up toward davidson, clouds early on, temperatures climb up into the lower 50s at least and out toward waynsboro, temperatures will approach 60 before beginning to fall. and this is just the beginning. all week long, we have been saying get through tonight and trend gets better and better through the weekend. that is still in force. about 60 or so on sunday and look at that. by tuesday, we are pushing 70 degrees.

we will see afternoon clouds saturday, that will be about it. highs upper 50s and again w that sunshine, around 60 degrees as we head on through sunday afternoon. five-day forecast, a look into next week, i think you'll like what you see. close to 70 by tuesday and in the 70s as we head through next week. the only thing i can think of that is negative is the pollen will start to come back again. but you know what? i think we can handle that with 70-degree warmth. >> yes, we can. and time to think about suntan lotion. >> we are getting into the season. if you're going to be cleaning up the yard, sun is getting stronger and stronger. you need the sunscreen. >> a local restaurant says it has been flooded with calls after our story about this controversial sign. the support they say they're getting from all over. >> and a new case of zika virus

why orth carolina new developments tonight, the fifth case of the zika virus has been confirmed in north carolina. health officials say a wake county woman recently traveled out of the country and contracted the virus. officials say they making sure they have the latest information about it. but at this point, residents do not need to be alarmed. >> it's not contagious in the sense we normally think of contagious and so i think at this point, we are still more in a monitoring. >> according to the cdc, there are more than 100 cases of travel related zika virus in the united states and in some cases, they say it's been transmitted sexually. >> all new tonight at 11:00, a police charged a woman hit an officer as she tried to flee a traffic stop. an officer pulled over aesha over wild wood avenue for
