and we are starting off pretty chilly this morning. we are 36 degrees but heading north ward. we'll see a lot of sunshine through the day and clouds building in later on. highs today are in the upper 50s. i'm tracking a weak disturbance threatening to bring a few sprinkles across the area. more on that coming up in the next half hour. we are following breaking

after midnight investigators kept us from the scene on potters mill road. we are continuing to ask how many people were involved and if they are looking for suspects. parents upset after a gun was found inside medical treatment pleasant elementary school. one parent told us the student had the gun all day. >> reporter: one parent told me she learned the gun had been on the fourth grader all day long and that has parents outraged. the school confirmed parents told their teacher one of classmates had a gun. then the teacher followed safety protocol. students were removed from the

message after the dismissal. one parent told me she wants answers and is scared for her child's safety. >> what if a child got this and it went off? planning on putting my child on the bus and i don't know if it's going to happen again. >> reporter: the school released this statement: they will be providing counselors today. >> and the sheriff's department

social services would get involved. authorities say one person was shot. we learned the incident started on copper creek? east charlotte. authorities say the victim drove from this scene. investigators say the person had nonlife-threatening injuries. we are asking what led up to the shooting. police arrested three men for soliciting children for sex online during a sting operation. one is a truck driver and one is in charlotte on business,

from charlotte. new details about a union county high school student arrested, accused of posting nude pictures of his teacher online. his teacher claims he got the images off her cell phone. she's since quit her job. he's charged with computer crime and voyeurism. he could face up to four years in jail and $10,000 bond. one woman told us she was walking in the park with her two children when the man pushed her to the ground and fondled her. police believe he exposed himself to another woman in the

the protestors were removed despite their attempts to resist. he'll have a rally in concord monday before heading to mississippi. north korea claims it is getting nuclear weapons ready following and order and north korea's announcement follows new sanctions from the united nations this week. military leaders say it is unlikely north korea can actually follow through with its threats.

american airlines applied for 14 daily flights to havana. one of those would go out of charlotte. the rest would go out of miami. there was a vigil held for kevin shay on windy grove road. tuesday morning the car she was in crashed. police say the driver was speeding. the vigil will start at 6:00 this evening. a farmers market preparing to open in april and devastated when a massive fire took down their warehouse. the owner says he was just a few minutes away when he got a

welcome back. we are starting off in the 30s but we are going to get up to the 50s. the state's transportation secretary talked about the new twist of the i-77 project. they were hoping the governor may be forced to cancel the contract. >> i'm expecting to have a chance to have a candid dot to dot conversation about texas' experience.

a toll road project there built by the same company clearing land for i-77. he admits the bankruptcy doesn't look good. and 77's toll lanes have been toxic for his boss who want the state contract canceled. >> i still need reassurance that this company can fulfill its responsibility. >> reporter: and the state transportation board is also waiting for texas. >> it's a good reason to check everything out. >> reporter: he says there's no reason to cancel the deal. >> we need to say, we understand this is a sensitive question, and we're going to go resolve it.

charlotte rite-aid and stole 20 packs of cigarettes and caused $30,000 in damages. customers say this is a quiet area. >> surprises me a little here. i've not heard of any crime in this area. >> police are reviewing video and don't have any suspects at this time. witnesses are describing the moment they helped stop a teenager from robbing an elderly woman in public. a 15-year-old tried to snatch a 73-year-old woman's purse in the lowe's parking lot thursday evening.

few showers. 18-year-old darius harding marks the first homicide of the year. thursday night three homes were punctured by bullets. the violence continued friday afternoon and ended with an 18- year-old dead. >> heard bang, bang, bang, like six or seven. i hate the floor. >> reporter: it happened near keys and black street. witnesses say a man standing outside shot at the car with harding and two others inside. >> he was just a baby. he didn't deserve this. we just want justice to be served. >> living in rock hill just got

a lot of people have guns that shouldn't have guns. >> we checked with police and they still don't know if the shootings all connected. a charlotte gun store is protecting itself after a smash and grab outside houston. up to ten thieves rammed a pickup through the window and used chairs to rip down the bars, stealing up to 50 guns. the owner here in charlotte called that video frightening and beefed up the security of their doors and windows, adding high end security cameras. >> mental health checks, background checks, it's

they're all on the street. a couple dozen protestors gathered last night after one officer was captured on camera punching a suspect repeatedly. they started in the park and marched to police headquarters. the group says cmpd has a history of using excessive force. >> criminals won't be seen as criminals but also as like human beings. i believe that would help them be more effective.

that rally. investigators say officers caught up with this suspect after a hit-and-run. a neighbor then recorded this video of seven officers, and one officer punching him several times. police say he resisted arrest and remains under investigation. yesterday hundreds of people came to akeel denton's funeral. he was shot and killed monday by police. the two struggled before he was shot. >> he was shot from the back or he was shot from the front? the report doesn't specify.

in and deal with that issue. >> the fbi will continue to investigate. the arrest is on leave pending the result of that investigation. a new study says some agencies are using body cameras before the state is instructing them how to use them. that could present problems if someone doesn't want to be recorded. the group says that takes away from the accountability of the cameras. >> that transparency is important when you consider the relationship law enforcement have with communities. >> in north carolina there are several body camera bills in the house.

officers. the l.a. police department is testing a knife found on o.j. simpson's old property, investigating claims an off duty officer working in the area says a construction worker gave him the knife and said it was found on o.j.'s old estate. the house was demolished in 1998. >> no matter what this knife turns out to be, it won't lead to o.j. simpson getting prosecuted begun. >> simpson was charged and acquitted in the murders. the unemployment rate is down. next, the bad news that comes with this.

up from the 30s where we are now. a 17-year-old is facing felony charges after police say he threatened porter ridge high school. justin cassidy is out of jail after posting bond. he admitted to posting a threat on instagram this week but said it was a hoax. community leaders are working on a resolution against cms assignment. the cornelius mayor wants tiddlier resolution to the school board on tuesday. after backlash from parents, a south carolina school dropped an assignment that asked third grade students to imagine their life as a slave. they were told to write about being kidnapped in west africa, being sold at auction and their life with slave owners.
