other end of 85, from the university area uptown, 66 miles per hour, so no issues there. 77 on the north end from north lake towards uptown charlotte, that's 68 miles per hour. another shooting overnight in charlotte. that's a total of five shootings at four separate locations across the area. this map shows you just how widespread those shooting scenes are. the most recent happened on brook tree drive in west charlotte just after 11:00. joe bruno is live at cmpd headquarters in uptown with the questions we are now asking investigators. joe? ? >> reporter: the past 24 hours have been filled with violence all thoughts charlotte and now police are trying to figure out what led to all of the shootings. we made this map. the first shooting injured two people. one person was shot at a gas station off brookshire boulevard and another victim at

the man drove there after bullets were fired in his car, shattering the glass and cutting his body. the second shooting was off the plaza in a shopping center. a man and a woman were shot in a car. both victims were taken to the hospital with major injuries. and the third shooting happened around 8:00 off barrington drive in east charlotte. the victim's girlfriend says her boyfriend was walking back from the store when he was shot in the leg. police say he will be okay. overnight, a fourth shooting. this one happened near brook tree drive in northwest charlotte. a female victim was shot in the leg and drove herself to darby avenue and eventually the hospital. and i just checked in with the captain here at cmpd headquarters. he says so far one person is in custody that's related to the brookshire boulevard shooting. no one in any of the other shootings. joe bruno, channel 9 eyewitness news.

was found shot to death in a north charlotte park, police have a suspect in custody. >> we're live where the suspect is expected to make his initial appearance today at the courthouse. angela? ? >> reporter:es, that's right. now, darnell brown will be here at the mecklenburg county courthouse to face a judge on the charges. he's been charged with murder and murder of an unborn child. now, police say they believe that brown was the last person to speak with 17-year-old before her death. investigators believe that the two were supposed to meet up on the night of the hurt. brown was already in custody for unrelated charges when police brought him in to be interviewed yesterday and that led to these charges. four years ago, her body was found at elder park in charlotte. she had been shot in the head three times. she was also two months pregnant and warrants showed that at the time, she believed that brown could have been the father.

senators to have legislation in place as soon as lawmakers go back into session. opponents of the i-77 toll lanes will have a chance to share concerns with the ncdot dot. state transportation leaders gave leaders until monday to point out the toll lane contract they want examined. construction is under way for the 26-mile toll lanes from charlotte to mooresville. we're waiting to find out what the state's transportation secretary learned during a meeting with texas d.o.t. officials. they questioned them about a central toll lane that went bankrupt outside austin. there will be a report sent to the governor in the coming weeks. family and friends came together to remember a mother of two killed in a crash in lincoln county. dozens of people gathered at a church yesterday evening to honor candace helms, she died on a crash yesterday morning. her 7 and 2-year-old sons were in the van. this morning.

a monroe middle school psychologist accused of assaulting a 14-year-old was suspended with pay. channel 9 brought you the story as breaking news monday at 5:00. we learned that dale buzz has been with the union county school district since 1994. he's charged with simple assault. we spoke to the 14-year-old's parents about what happened, but they asked the details be kept private for now. iredell county organizers didn't want to block annexation for a rock quarry will tour the area. some are concerned it will make the area unsafe and lower property values. a petition went back before board members just two days ago. officials had not made a decision on the project. attorney general loretta lynch asked not to be considered for the supreme court vacancy. a justice department spokeswoman says lynch is honored to serve as attorney general and is focused on finishing her term. president obama is searching for a replacement for justice

alex thompson's death, but his sister is blaming police. >> nobody needs to have somebody go from being their best friend to their guardian angel. >> they say thompson crashed his pickup truck on highway 70 and ran toward an officer. the officer reportedly told him to stop. he didn't and that's when the officer tased him. a man accused of orchestrating the heights of nearly $5 million in gold bars in north carolina will stay behind bars. at least for now. a federal judge refused bail for alberto perez until his trial. the fbi says last year perez used a gps device to track a semi-truck that was carrying the gold, then released pepper spray using a remote control to sicken the driver. agents say perez stole the entire truck along i-95 in north carolina. north carolina lawmakers are coming up with ways to manage the spread of the zika virus. yesterday, the department of health and human services

showing how the state is monitoring cases. >> we're well prepared and there's -- there's really no reason to be concerned. >> there are only 5 confirmed cases of zika in north carolina, but the world health organization now says sexual transmission of the zika virus may be more common than once thought. they reviewed reports and investigations for several countries. they say there's also growing evidence zika is behind a spike in serious birth defects. the virus is mostly spread by mosquito bites. 6:16. the south carolina senate cleared the way for a bill that bans an abortion past 19 weeks. the legislation allows exceptions only when the mother's life is in jeopardy. democrats blocked the bill for years. a final vote in the house would send it to the governor's desk. warning children about listening to loud music. doctors in north carolina are seeing an increase in the number of millennials with hearing loss.

low 70s by midday. some high clouds stream through in the afternoon, but we will make it into the upper 70s here in the charlotte area. rockingham, chesterfield, closer to the 80 degrees mark. the neighborhood forecast for burg rock, also a warmer start to the day. upper 50s and highs for today into the mid-60s with high clouds. a little bit of a breeze, as well. so taking you to futurecast, winds shift around from the southwest, anywhere from 5 to 10 miles per hour. it will be windier in the mountains and we could see wind gusts up to 20 to 25 miles per hour throughout the day. but standing outside in the sun, boy, it's going to feel good and with a bit of a breeze, it keeps you cooler with temperatures close to 80 degrees in some spots. we will keep the warmer weather around for the next several days. the average high is 61 degrees, well above that through friday. going into the weekend, that's when it's going to be a little

john belk, traffic is moving here at the interchange, but no big issues. stephanie? the police chief is speaking out about this video that shows an officer repeatedly punching a suspect being taken into custody. >> the video raised a lot of concerns throughout the community and raised questions over the department's policy regarding use of force. joe bruno is live at police headquarters to explain why they believe the officer's actions were justified. >> police chief understands that when you first see the video, it comes as a shock. he says after he reviewed body cam footage, it was clear to him that the officer did nothing wrong. a channel 9 viewer sent us the original video that shows the cmpd officer continuously punching a hit-and-run suspect. the chief says body camera footage revealed the suspect was refusing to cooperate and the punches were to restrain him. officers walked us through the tactics they use in these

and saw a teen grabbing the woman inappropriately and they stopped him. they held him down until police could get there and say the teen con -- confessed to having urges in the past. >> said -- he said it was an urge and it wasn't the first time it happened. >> 19-year-old kyle moore was arrested and is now being held on $100,000 bond. he is due back in court march 16th. just a few days after the sheriff took charge in pageland, dozens of officers are returning to work. most walked off the job after chief larry brown returned to work. now there are major changes. he's gotten body cameras for officers, tossed out a dated rule book and shut down the city jail, which he calls a liability. >> there was a gross deficiency in paperwork, documentation for the jailors here. >> larry brown was on leave for four months because of a

we have filed a freedom of information act to find out what the investigation is about. we will bring you more as soon as we get the documents. this morning, the gaston county sheriff is warning people about a new phone scam using his office. he says the callers tell people they missed a summons to appear in court if they don't pay 14 $1,400, they will be thrown in jail. the sheriff says if you get the call, don't pay. and call the sheriff's office e to report it. rowan county employees could get pay raises by next month, the county approved it to take effect by april. it works out to an average of 6 percent and will cost $1.7 million. the county says it's giving underpaid workers closer to the job title's minimum. cornelius police purchased a new patrol boat to use on lake norman.

a little over $200,000. the department says since they patrol the lake throughout the year, they needed a boat to protect officers from the elements. the current boat is 25 years old. powerful images from seattle now. firefighters responded to an explosion. look at this picture here. this is courtesy of the seattle fire department. you can see describe scattered all over the place. our sister station in seattle says firefighters were responding to a gas leak about two hours ago and then there was an explosion. we know nine firefighters were hurt. it's not clear how serious the injuries are. the seattle newspaper says two buildings are flattened and windows at other businesses were blown out in the blast. seattle firefighters are giving an update right now. we're monitoring the developments, trying to get more information and find out more about the damage and also get video, as well. we'll update you here as soon

tonight, the senate will have a chance to give cms feedback about the budget priorities for next year. this is the third out of six community engagement meetings that the district is hosting between now and the end of april. cms expects $27 million in new costs next year for salary increases, more students and some other things. tonight's meeting runs from 6:00 until 7:30 on patriot drive. last night, another town in north mecklenburg county sent a message to cms about the student assignment plan. the board of commissioners passed a resolution, asking leaders to guarantee every student in their neighborhood a seat at a neighborhood school. they say the district's proposal could move thousands of students to different schools and it's creating a lack of accountability and predictability for patients. many parents believe wherever you live is where you should go to school. and many are pushing to keep students in their neighborhood schools.

passed a resolution on monday night. lake norman's chamber of commerce sent a letter to the school board. leaders say they will address the proposed resolutions tomorrow night. carolina panthers defensive end charles johnson is planning for another season with the team. espn now reporting, also other sources, that johnson and the panthers have agreed to a one- year $3 million contract. the team released him last week to save $11 million in salary cap space. johnson visited with the giants and the buccaneers and reportedly was offered twice as much money elsewhere. johnson told espn he almost signed on with the giants, but he said carolina is home for him. weather and traffic every 10 minutes. >> here's meteorologist vicki graf with a great carolina forecast. >> that's right. it will be another beautiful day. we're minutes away from the sunrise getting into view. here's the view from the lake norman camera. just a gorgeous start to the day.

>> it was an arrest the family of the girl had been waiting for four years. angela hong is live outside the courthouse with more on this. >> reporter: john, darnell brown has been connected with the case. police say he's the last person to speak with the victim, the 17-year-old, four years ago. now, brown was already in the custody of police on unrelated charges when they brought him in to headquarters for questioning, that's when he was charged with murder and murder of an unborn child. four years ago, police found the teen's body at elder park in charlotte. she was shot three times in the head and was also two months pregnant. police say her e-mails show that she believed brown could be the child's father. and we're continuing to ask police what new information led them to the arrest. reporting live outside the courthouse, angela hong eyewitness news. and channel 9 will have a crew in court for today's hearing. watch starting at 5:00 for the latest.

10 minutes on daybreak. mark taylor has a look at the roads this morning. >> we're getting live pictures of the accident we've been talking about the past half hour in north charlotte. this is peach tree earth at the intersection of mingus off of sunset road. this was a rollover accident. we were told that the driver fled the scene. so there were no transports or injuries, and it looks like it took out a hydrant in the area, but the good news is it is not affecting the commute at this time. we're still working to gather more information and have a crew on the scene, but not a traffic issue at this time. 85, we're seeing a traffic issue southbound, up in concord, north of nc 73. an accident is causing these delays. and we had an earlier accident, 85 toward kings mountain, not having a huge impact. not a bad start to the day, a sign of things to come through the afternoon. it will be another nice day. temperatures now in the upper 40s to low 50s.
