collins was killed when she was hit by a car on west sugar creek road at rutgers avenue at around 7:30 tonight. eyewitness news reporter alexa ashwell has been out there on the scene for hours now, and just got an update from police. >> reporter: scott, erica, police determined the 42-year- old woman was crossing the west section of sugar creek in this direction, when she was hit by an oncoming vehicle traveling west. you can see, there are no crosswalks in this section. we can go ahead and show you some video that we shot when we first arrived here. police said the driver tried to swerve to not hit the woman, but they collided. it was a very emotional scene as we saw family and friends of the victim here, we heard shouts, we heard cries. they were simply devastated by this. this stretch of west sugar creek road has four lanes,

it's a fairly busy road, lined with businesses. one man who has an auto shop here said he heard the impact. >> somebody's in the road. i'm checking out the area. >> reporter: and again, this is a look at the orange marking where this crash occurred. police haven't charged the driver. it doesn't appear he was at fault in this again. police identifying the year-old marianne collins. reporting live in north charlotte, alexa ashwell. now to a developing story tonight, police and the fbi have been on the scene at this home for hours tonight. they're out there looking for clues after officials say a man and woman were caught out there burying a body.

as breaking news today at 5:00, since then, dayshawn brown -- >> reporter: he and his nephew both lived in this home. tonight, police have been waiting here for hours for a search warrant to go inside. many saw how it ended. this is the scene in alexander county from the air and the grounds a deputies arrested this couple, both charged with murder, and trying to bury the victim's body. our cameras were rolling as the suspect admitted to the crime. >> i just panicked to hide him, and i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: tonight the challenge for investigators is finding where and how it happened. >> had no idea that it was this close to home. >> reporter: amy parker thomas lives just blocks away from the

authorities identified him as tico hearne and says his nephew lived with him at this home. >> there was a lot of dynamics in this situation. you have a nephew and an uncle. >> reporter: tonight, police gathered here waiting on a want to search the home. his wife sat vacant on the porch where neighbors say tico horn would often sit. neighbors say tico hearne was we loved trout this community. >> a lot of times he would have his radio on and he would be out dancing, as people would come blow the horn, or go on the sidewalk and dance with him. >> reporter: we checked and found that the suspect, tony hearne was released from federal prison in december. neighbors say his uncle lived here alone prior to his release.

tony hearne has a lengthy criminal past, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer, and animal fighting charges. you can see more of our chopper video and the interview with the suspect on our home page. chief meteorologist steve udelson is tracking the conditions. >> we're about to see another aspect of spring, more moisture, or humidity. these shades of katrina, you can see on our future cast, shows that humidity returning all over the carolinas. you can already see some clouds spilling across the mountains and into the charlotte area. no issues with fog just yet, but that will soon change. low patches of fog. you run into problems on the road. that's what some neighborhoods will face first thing in the morning. >> our team of meteorologists will be checking visibility.

breaking news, it could be hours before crews fix a water main break in connolly springs. construction crews cut the water main on roney road. repairs are expected to be completed early tomorrow morning. tonight a break in the case after a pizza delivery driver. police led brayon roads into the mecklenburg county jail. he is accused of kidnapping a pizza delivery driver and taking him on a long ride to try to steal cash. police say two weeks ago, they responded to a call. that's where they said they hanted heard from one of their drivers.

abandoned on baldwin avenue. the victim says the suspects kidnapped him at gunpoint, and drove him to several atm's up i- 85. he says he finally got away in arch dale. we found that rhodes has no prior convictions in north carolina. in the meantime, they're looking for a second suspect, a black female they believe helped rhodes commit the crime. private toll lanes around the country. to widen i-77 says they want to share this information after a recent bankruptcy announcement by a texas company. sin tray is building the toll lanes on i-77. the d.o.t. says it will have a report to the governor in the coming weeks about what the transportation secretary

the texas d.o.t. and a forum meeting on monday, nick questioned them about the toll road that went bankrupt outside of boston. an amber alert for a missing phak teenager has canceled after the girls found safe. that alert was issued for 15- year-old dixie bailey. she's from brevard. investigators believe she might have been trafficking with a friend to atlanta. tonight, police say she is okay, but did not release further details. in this bilingual debate, immigration was a big topic. >> stop the raids, stop the round ups. stop the departing people who re living here doing their lives, doing their jobs and that's my priority. >> i don't think that the secretary fully answered the question.

the pudding. i will not deport children from the united states of america. >> can you promise not to deport immigrants who don't have a criminal record? >> i can make that promise. >> tomorrow afternoon, hillary clinton will be in durham for a campaign rally there. but canceled a planned rally in raleigh. tonight, donald trump held a rally in fayetteville. he says he wants his nomination to be quote a knockout victory. he asked the crowd if they would promise to vote for him in the north carolina primary tuesday. >> do you pledge that on tuesday, you will go and we will make america great again, and you will vote for donald trump? yes? >> trump is leading in the polls in north carolina. police have yet to make any arrests in a strength of shootings yesterday. the four cases stretch from west to east charlotte over a period of 8 hours.

six people were injured in the shootings that started when two people were shot outside of a gas station along brookshire boulevard. the next shooting happened on the plaza in east charlotte. a woman was shot in the happened. police say they do not believe that the shootings are connected. police are still looking for a suspect in a stabbing in north suspect charlotte. chopper 9 was over the scene during eyewitness news at 5:00, since then, police told us that suspect and the victim know each other, that they they argued, and one stabbed the other. we spoke with city leaders tonight, and they're telling us, there are no plans for any disciplinary action in an investigation into a city council woman's choice to use a charlotte fire leader as her intern. she warned claire fallon the

against policy about council employee interaction. he called it unlawful and a conflict of interest. claire fallons says puckett is working with her in his off time, and that this should not be an issue. >> tried to bully me and tell me i can't have this, and i can't do this. oh, yes, i can, people elected me. >> city officials said attorneys are looking into whether any action will be taken, if it's believed that fallon or puckett may be violating city policy. puckett says he has not been paid by fallon and for the time being, he is not working as her intern. getting the preliminary results of a survey on student assignment. they want to create more diversity in our schools but haven't said if this will

right now, we're staying on top of the breaking news for you outside of north charlotte. they say that 42-year-old marianne collins stepped out in front of that vehicle in west sugar creek road. the driver swerved, but was not able to avoid hitting her. police say that she was wearing dark colored clothing, and that she was not in a cross wack.

the driver will face charges. tomorrow, a man from charlotte will travel to california to pay his respects to nancy reagan at a private funeral service. >> he opened up to alexa ashwell about how she changed his life. >> she was the lady who gave me a chance, i always reminded her of that. >> reporter: a position he admits he likely wouldn't be in today if not forgot, and many years ago from nancy reagan. >> a jewish kid from new york, who was a drug addict, to work in the white house. how could that possibly happen? >> reporter: it did in the early 1980s, when ronald reagan was in office. soon after, he was offered a job by ms. reagan. he showed us these pictures of major campaigns they worked on together, including her nationally recognized drug awareness program, just say no. it was the beginning of a life

new meaning sunday when nancy reagan passed away. >> i immediately thought, i can't send her flowers anymore. >> reporter: he showed us the thank you letters nancy would send him after receiving flowers. >> this is january of this year. you can see how her name just kind of, drifts down. >> reporter: those letters, now next to an invitation to her funeral. a celebration of life for a woman he said brought grace to the white house and into his own life. >> looking at the letters, i am saddened by that, but also it brings a sense of peace, it was always a friend, it just happened to be nancy reagan. >> visitation will continue tomorrow for the public to pay their respects to nancy reagan. mrs.reagan's body is laying in repose at the ronald reagan presidential library in california.

she died on sunday of congestive heart failure at the age of 94. delivering suggested police reforms to a commission after last week's deadly officer related shooting. the recommendations include body cameras, and strengthening anti-bias training. witnesses said den kins was running away at the time. rock hill police say they're investigating after they found marijuana hash oil in a classroom for 4-year-olds. a teacher spotted an orange pasty substance wrapped up with a spoon on east black street. they say it tested positive for thc. they say it's not clear where it came from. congresswoman alma adams will make a campaign announcement. in the past 90 minutes, she told channel 9, she will speak to supporters at first ward park.

district 12, and is up for reelection. last month, district 12 was drastically changed. it is now including a big chunk of mecklenburg county. tracking a storm out west, that's getting closer to charlotte. >> yes, it is bringing a lot of flooding over portions of the gulf coast. mainly louisiana, and texas overnight tonight. it's got sights set eventually on its way towards the carolinas. the focus tonight, again, extremely heavy rains. look at these rain totals, northern louisiana, upwards of a foot of rain. north in arkansas, almost to memphis. there it is, as the system sits out here, a lot of the moisture is going to be wrung out of it, long before it reaches us. we will get some, but nothing like they're going to see off to our west. in the meantime, boy are we being treated to spring. our average high is only 61. each and every day, through the rest of the week, and i think

i'm jimmy, i'm the host of the show. thank you for watching. thanks for coming. thank you for being so honest tonight. starting with the race for president of the united states. say what you like about this primary election, it has not been boring for even one second. there are primaries and caucuses in four states last night. the big story was bernie sanders, all the polls had hillary clinton winning the primary in michigan by 20 points, he somehow won it, beat hillary clinton 49.8% to 43.8%. ever since he stated clipping his lucky ear hair things have been going great. normally it's not a good idea to but in this case. it was a big night for loud men with crazy hair. because on the republican side, the night belonged to donald trump. literally, he licensed and owns the night now.
