what this could mean for now from the news team covering the carolinas. this is channel 9 eyewitness news at 11:00. >> and right at the top, we have breaking news coming out of west charlotte. a car just crashed into a home. take a look at your screen. this is a live look at the scene out of honey wood avenue. you can see the front half of that car is smashed right into the side of that home. >> police, fire, and power crews are out there on the scene. we're still working right now asking questions, trying to find out if anyone has been hurt and what led up to this incident.

out the results of a controversial student assignment survey to a packed room. >> it was slightly skewed, to say the least. >> new at 11:00, we've been digging through hundreds of pages and we learned what is most important to cms parents. >> thousands of people took the survey hoping their voice will be heard when it comes to student assignment. i'm scott wickersham. >> and i'm erica bryant. dug through those survey results in just the past few hours. d ashawn. >> reporter: erica, a huge part of this meeting was making sure community members had a chance to see those survey results for themselves. more than 27,000 people responded and tonight they also moved the meeting time back, just so those who wanted to be here could attend this meeting. now for the first hour, cms policy committee members went through student assignment goals for the 2017 school year. they compare those goals to

members broke down with three a's. assumptions, agreements, and arguments. now what most came to see were the results of that student assignment survey, which aimed at uncovering what parents found most important in a school. now the full report is more than 200 pages long. so we broke down some of those survey results and here's some of that right now. 80% said the staff is most 75 said school environment, and 67% said location and how close schools were to home. tonight i spoke with some of the people who came out for this meeting. some said they left with more questions than answers. >> that's the thing. >> it was slightly skewed, to say the least, but i think they started realizing that this evening that depending on how you manipulate the data is how you will take away or have something to take away from that. >> the thing i'm most

our parents say they want in terms of programming. >> and superintendent clark told me the next step is locking down those guiding principles for the 2017 school year. she also called on the committee to add more meetings to their schedule to speed up that process. reporting live from the government center tonight, dashawn brown, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> huntersville, cornelius and davidson all passed resolutions asking the district to keep a seat open for every child who wants to stay at their neighborhood school. leaders are considering creating their own district, leaving cms. in the last few hours, mint hill's town council will continue to monitor the situation. matthews town council could vote as soon as monday. we posted the full results at wsoctv.com. you can find that inside the home page. new tonight, at 11:00, police charged three men in the accidental shooting death of a lancaster county man.

body. now back in january, police truck. police say reece shot himself while playing russian roulette. investigators say the three men took off after it happened. new tonight, just in the past three hours, the group that has been fighting the controversial i-77 toll lanes project shared its research on private toll road projects across the country. tonight's meeting was in response to a recent bankruptcy announcement by a texas company created by cintra. currently building the local toll lane along i-77. we talked with one resident who is against the project. >> very much believe this is a misguided project. it's not going to help. it's not intended to really help congestion at all. it's intended to make money for the investors. >> the north carolina dot says it will have a report to the governor in the coming weeks. about what the transportation

meeting with the texas dot on monday. it is likely that tolls will be built along charlotte interstates, even if cintra is not involved. local transportation leaders told channel 9 that toll lanes are still the best way to manage traffic. they say years of research back up their plans for paid lanes across the charlotte metro. >> still no arrest after five shootings in charlotte this week. the latest violence was earlier today with deadly shots fired on parkland circle. >> new at 11:00, eyewitness news reporter learned the name of that victim. >> yes, cmpd identified the victim as michael jeffries, jr., the young man was less than a month away from his 25th birthday. his family is planning his funeral. tonight, a local community activist told me this violence must stop. >> somebody's child. >> just before sunset as investigators continue to comb

homicide, local community activists were talking with residents. >> when it's at your doorstep, what are you going to do? >> a member of mothers of murdered offspring. a local antiviolence and support group. she came here after the news broke. that a young man was shot and killed and two other people injured at this apartment complex off wt harris boulevard. family members told channel 9 it started with a domestic disturbance between the victim's mother and her boyfriend. >> my heart dropped. >> lewis recently moved to this apartment complex. she didn't know why police were here until lagal told her. >> i was coming for safety and peace. so, i mean, that's scary. i know it can happen ywhere. >> it can, and has. two days ago, in a span of less than eight hours, there were six people hurt in four shootings across charlotte. today's homicide sparked a long conversation about gun violence and the need for everyone in the community to step up and speak out. >> losing a life like this, i

but create more controversy and create more hate. >> we have balloons, we have flowers, we have candles. we don't have solutions. we need solutions. >> and police have yet to confirm what led up to today's shooting or if any charges will be filed. it's also unclear how the other two victims are doing tonight. reporting live up town. alexa ashwell, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> you can read all of our coverage of this stretch of violence in charlotte by going to wsoctv.com. we have links inside the story on our home page. >> tonight, investigators are questioning a suspect story after a man said he killed his uncle in self-defense. chopper 9 sky zoom flew over head. they were trying to bury a body. the victim was hernz's uncle. we found out that the sheriff deputy was the one that called 911.

was an old farm truck in there. because you just, i've never in years and years and years of passing that location never seen vehicles in there. >> claim the his uncle was trying to choke him, but they found no evidence of that. deputies are also still trying to figure out where the murder happened. >> a budget committee is set to discuss the impact of a plan to eliminate trash pick up and what that would have on renters and condo owners. the city has been considering this move for the past four years. it's an opportunity for the city to save some money. by turning over those services to contractors. but the residents say they feel that this will force them to pay more fees on top of taxes. community leaders will meet at 10:00 tomorrow morning. the information gathered during that meeting will be presented to city council members at a later date. new at 11:00, a vigil is going to be held tomorrow to remember the two managers who

mcdonald's last week. ray shell and cody watts was shot in the apartment of the restaurant. former boyfriend, eric, is charged with their murders. family and friends are set to gather for a candle light vigil tomorrow night at 7:00 at the mountain grove baptist church. tomorrow, a federal court panel will hear from both sides to decide if the new maps for congressional districts in north carolina are fair. in february, the judges ruled district 12 were not constitutional, saying race was the predominant factor in drawing the lines. the lines were redrawn, many think those are unfair. tonight, we asked representative, trisha, what could happen if the judges, once again, agree with opponents. they could draw their own maps as judges. they could require someone else an outside agency to draw them. so that's a bit up in the air. >> the naacp argued the old maps put most minority voters

the other districts. opponents want the judges to take over and draw what they consider to be fair lines in district 12 and 1. and today, 12th district representative who lives up in greensboro said she will run for reelection against former state senator, malcolm graham, even though the district is now only members of mecklenburg county. she plans to move here now to run. so we'll be watching that meeting tomorrow, and let you know if the judges make a decision and how it will affect you. >> mothers are telling us that one man tried to abduct their three young girls in a gastonia community. a 12-year-old girl said yesterday a man drove up next to her along gobble street and asked if she wanted to make some money. he then told her to get in the car. she ran. a 7-year-old and an 11-year-old reported a man driving the same car motioning for them to come to him. now witnesses say the man was driving what appeared to be a dodge dart.

captured images of the car. investigators say that one of the women killed in the shooting at a backyard party in pennsylvania was eight months pregnant. and the death of her unborn child has now been ruled a homicide. we first reported the ambush as breaking news this morning on daybreak. three other women and a man were also killed when prosecutors say a man opened fire on party goers. police say it was a planned attack and right now, they have no suspects. a private funeral will be held tomorrow in california for former first lady, nancy reagan. for the second straight day, her body lay in repose at the presidential library. thousands have come to pay their respects. miss reagan will be memorialized tomorrow and buried next to her husband. a restaurant manager robbed with a gun held to his head. >> it's a nice neighborhood. it's very upsetting. >> new at 11:00, some neighbors

nothing to rain the mid wood spoke house in plaza midwood robbed at gunpoint. >> thief made off with cash in seconds. allison latos learned neighbors are shocked it happened at such a popular spot. >> heather smith lives in plaza midwood, feet from where police say an armed man robbed the smoke house. >> i go there every other weekend. >> right after midnight, the restaurant's owner says a dishwasher was taking the trash out. when the thief followed him back in and went straight to a manager sitting in the office. >> put a gun to their head and asked about money from the safe. >> the manager hit a silent panic button beforehanding over the cash. >> ran out in 15 or 20 seconds. >> it's a terrifying crime. people like smith were surprised to hear about at this popular spot. >> it's so alarming. we're like 30 feet away from it. >> oh my god, that's insane.

president obama lectures americans on islamaphobia. that is maddening. >> tomorrow, former presidential candidate, ben carson, plans to stop donald trump. tomorrow, democratic presidential candidate, bernie sanders, will try to rally votes in raleigh. sander wills be there at memorial stadium at noon. the event is free and open to the public. north carolina's primary is on tuesday. >> tonight, a go fund me tells channel 9 it no longer will allow military nonprofit group that helped add local family to set up anymore campaigns on their website. marines and mickey is a south carolina based group now under investigation for allegedly lying about military service and misappropriating funds. it started working with the skip wells foundation, which is questioning how the founder spent thousands of dollars it donated. now it was almost two years ago that marines helped the union county family watch their son graduate from a marine boot camp. susan and brian have disabilities and they couldn't

carolina. they told marines about their situation and say the next day, they had lodging and fuel to get there. tonight, we're staying on top of that breaking news in west charlotte. in the past 45 minutes, a car crashed into a house. take a look. this is again a live picture from the scene here on honey wood avenue off brookshire boulevard. >> at one point, another shot we saw the front half of the car, a black vehicle smashed into the side of the home. looks like they might have removed it by now, but we spoke to a neighbor who told us what she heard. >> i heard a big boom and then i looked out my blinds and the next thing you know, i see the mama and son trying to hurry up and push the car up out of the house. >> and we are still working now to learn if anyone was hurt and what led up to the accident. at least four people have been killed by severe flooding moving across the south and tonight, more heavy rain is coming down. 14 inches of rain has already

the state of emergency has been declared aid cross northern louisiana tonight. crews are trying to rescue people stranded on rooftops and cars, up in trees. 3500 homes have been evacuated. chief meteorologist, steve udelson said that system is headed our way next. >> we are not going to get the 6 to 10 inches of rain that doused most of the deep south. we will watch the system push our way, but mother nature will help us out some. that is a giant brick wall that is stopping that moisture from pushing into the carolinas. we'll see some and we could surely use some. a tenth of an inch of rain. it's been so warm, you lost track of how dry it's been. we are off to our driest start. pollen counts, quadrupled. they went up four times overnight last night. they are now very high. mainly cedar trees, that's the main culprit. the warmth will continue,

most of the charlotte area with 50s as you move from i-40 into the mountains. this is our average high temperature on the 11th of march. not the average low. we will see low clouds. our future cast suggesting that. the only real threat for fog will be across the high country. warm and clouds, leave your coat at home first thing tomorrow morning. mid 60s by 9:00 a.m. and once we get the sun back, and suggests we will by late morning. we will see temperatures zoom again. tomorrow afternoon. mainly the mountains and foothills. can't rule out a couple sprinkles. that's a cold front trying to put an end to this warm weather party. not going to do much tomorrow. we'll be in the mid to upper 70s. pushing 80 by tomorrow afternoon. the mountains a little cooler. neighborhood forecast up town, how about a long lunch? how about a walk during lunch? temperatures in the low to mid 70s. we'll be in the upper 70s tomorrow afternoon.

a slightly better chance of afternoon showers. out in the midlands of south carolina, easily pushing 80 degrees tomorrow. unbelievable. watch our future cast. saturday we'll see some showers early on. we will also see some brakes in the clouds on saturday. not a washout. as we have been forecasting, mainly focus from lunchtime on. there's a look at our future cast potential rain. most of that rain on sunday. upwards of an inch. area. a mixed bag over the weekend, but not too bad. our five-day forecast calls for us to dry out again and warm up even more next week. we're talking about temperatures pushing 80 as we head toward next tuesday. >> my eyes go straight to the 80. looks great. >> thanks, steve. >> there's a big fight at a local restaurant in the middle of the afternoon. all of it caught on tape and it happened here. the action the restaurant is taking to keep customers safe.
