now from the news team covering the carolinas, this is channel 9 eyewitness news at 11:00. right now, a powerful storm responsible for this major flooding across the south is pushing towards charlotte. tonight, we're using the city's strongest radar to pinpoint the impact it will have on your sunday plans. good evening, i'm blake hanson with meteorologist, john aarons. john, this system dumped a foot of rain in texas and louisiana and we'll see some of the showers tomorrow. >> thankfully, it will be a much weaker than what texas and louisiana had. we will be dealing with this into monday. as this system, and yet you can't find a will the of circulation, but it will be sending that moisture. you see how the rain is moving south to north, it will be sending that moisture into charlotte for the next couple of days. giving us waves of rain. that's this forecast here. i think most of the rain will stay up to the west of charlotte.

but, you need to plan for this in charlotte. interactive radar is the tool to do so right when you step outside. so this is what it's going to look like at 7:00 in the morning. a lot of rain over hickory and that's going to be a theme for you, my friends. up in morganton. jefferson, up into the upstate of south carolina. charlotte gets tastes of this by 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning. there will be quick downpours around. it's after that, during the afternoon time, we'll be watching carefully. it will get humid. some of this energy will come off the foothills. we'll be watching where those strong storms will develop. i'll have that in a bit. >> thanks, we are tracking the system overnight as it inches closer to charlotte. before you head out the door, watch eyewitness news sunday morning. >> new tonight, it's official. republican presidential candidate, donald trump, will be in hickory on monday ahead of tuesday's north carolina primary. his website says he will be there at 10:00 a.m. the school released a statement earlier this afternoon saying

trump and intended to honor it as long as there was proper security. now, earlier tonight, more protesters disrupted a trump rally. this time in kansas city, missouri. >> get them out. >> shortly after trump asked police to arrest the protester. he said he wants to start pressing charges. they are disrupters. and let me tell you, the reason they are doing it is because there's never been anything like this that's happened before. >> this afternoon, the republican front runner had another security scare when a protester rushed the stage at rally in ohio. police have since arrested this man and charged him with inducing panic and disorderly conduct. just last night, violence erupted at a trump rally in chicago. his campaign canceled that event. a planned attack. at least two police officers

a number of presidential candidates will be in the charlotte area over the next couple days. ted cruz will be at charlotte motor speedway. on monday, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will be in charlotte. sanders will be at the music pavilion. clinton at the grady cole center. today, voters hit the polls in wyoming and washington, d.c. for the republican caucuses. marco rubio won d.c. ted cruz won wyoming. count on us to bring you everything you need to know leading up to tuesday's primary. new developments in a deadly officer involved shooting in raleigh. lawyer for the family of denkins, the man shot and killed by an officer two weeks ago says an independent autopsy shows he was shot in the back. during a press conference this afternoon, a member of the family's legal team said the

back was near his shoulder. he asked everyone to keep an open mind about how the shooting occurred. today, his mother struggled to hold back tears. >> my son was supposed to be arrested by this officer. i would rather he had just arrested him. >> denkins was shot four times and killed on february 29. a preliminary autopsy report shows den kins was shot in the chest. but that report never specified whether the shots came from the front or back. police say the officer involved acted in self-defense. on monday, charlotte city council will decide whether a school should go up where the old east land mall used to be in charlotte. eyewitness news reporter, dashawn brown spoke to both sides of the debate ahead of the vote. >> neighbors i spoke with tell me they are ready to see something built on this lot, but not all agree that should

>> i feel the need in this area, especially for education. because i have seen plans. i have seen all these different proposals and proposals. so if the first step is building a school, let's do it. >> and the vote on that sale is line number 18 here on monday's agenda. it's happening at the government center in uptown starting at 5:00. reporting in east charlotte. dashawn brown, channel 9 eyewitness news. new at 11:00, police arrested a belmont man for sex offenses against multiple children over a 12-year period. our partners at the gaston gazette report kevin reid is charged with first-degree sexual offense and four counts of taking indecent liberties with a child. he committed the crimes between 2003 and 2015. he is being held on a $251,000 bond. tonight, police continue their search for a suspect wanted in two bank robberies today. the robberies happened just ten minutes apart.

at the wells fargo on highway 49 south at 10:45 this morning. ten minutes later, they say the 5th third bank on highway 49 south was also robbed. these are surveillance pictures of the suspect. anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff's office. new at 11:00, a woman is accused of stealing multiple cars over the past two months. our partners at the gaston gazette report crystal is charged with three felony counts of larceny and breaking and entering. warrants say the most expensive car was worth $27,000. she is being held on a $33,000 bond. new at 11:00, a sonar search is underway tonight for a sunken tug boat and two missing crew members in the hudson river. the boat sank after crashing into a barge this morning. one crew member's body has been recovered. two others are still missing, but presumed dead.

andrew cuomo called the crash a tragedy. >> you have people who aren't going to come home. >> police are using sonar before sending divers. pushing a barge down the hudson. all new at 11:00, nissan is recalling more than 47,000 of its leaf electric cars in the u.s. and canada for a possible brake malfunction. u.s. safety regulators said today the problem is focused on a relay inside the car's electronic brake booster. the recall includes more than 46,000 leafs in the u.s. from 2013 to 2015 model years. no accidents have been reported. we put information on this recall on our website. you'll find it on wsoctv.com. under the news tab. today, u.s. department of transportation secretary and former charlotte mayor announced the finalist for a transportation grant.

a look at the seven cities still in the running for the smart city challenge. these cities will have the chance at a $40 million federal grant to improve transportation. charlotte was up against 78 cities. that has been wide led down to these 7. the winner will be announced in june. tonight, a second escaped inmate in new mexico is back in police custody. authorities caught lionel this afternoon in northern albuquerque. he was serving time for armed robbery. another inmate was captured yesterday. his sister, olivia cruz, was also arrested for an outstanding warrant. officials are investigating whether she was involved in the men's escape. >> that's why i got busted. if i had help, i would have been gone. i picked the lock. >> i don't doubt there are people out there that helped them. >> cruz was serving life for murder when the two men escaped

officials say three more people have died from flu complications all in the same week. officials report eight people have died from this flu season. that's far fewer than last year with 218 reported deaths. it's also the fewest deaths since the 2011, 2012 flu season. tonight, the u.s. is one step closer to fighting the zika virus. health officials say a mosquito can be genetically modified. they plan on releasing the modified mosquitoes in a small florida suburb for a trial period to see how they control the mosquitoes that carry the virus. they say this will not have a significant impact on people or the environment. we just reported yesterday that there's been a sixth confirmed zika case here in north carolina. that case was in forsythe county. officials say each patient in the state contracted the virus while traveling out of the country.

transmitted cases in the u.s. is minimal. tonight, crews are investigating what caused a fire at this union county home. this is video from the scene on newtown road this afternoon. wesley chapel fire department crews say it took 20 minutes to put out the fire. the home was vacant and that no one was hurt. a bad reputation of major flooding along the gulf. i'll be pinpointing how strong it will be when it comes to your neighborhood coming up. >> commitment to change one week after violence spread through rock hill. >> so many senseless killings, losing their lives.

police say it came after gunfire erupted at the intersection of black and keel streets. just hours earlier, three rock hill homes were sprayed with bullets. >> i got you. >> part of the point of today's event, to reach kids early before bad influences creep in. >> we don't want them to fall in the hands of gang relationships and we want them to have the opportunity. >> police were visible, too, there to answer questions and talk about their stake in this. >> it takes us working with the community to do this. >> there's no lofty expectation problems. but the hope is a start and helps develop strategies to stop violence in the future. >> enough is enough, because if enough is never enough, then i'll meet you here again next week. where we are going to march again. >> harding's death was the city's first homicide in 2016. lines were out the door at the south county regional library today as people waited

early voting ended in north carolina. some voters waited for 40 minutes. early voting ended at 1:00 this afternoon. we looked at senator tom tillis about the candidate's last ditch efforts as he made phone calls for marco rubio. >> they are critically important. t amazing how many people, i was just at a gop event last night, a third of the room was undecided. they are trying to make up their minds. >> polls open at 6:30 tuesday morning for the north carolina primary. >> new at 11:00, police say a teenager is recovering tonight after he was shot near a north carolina college campus. it happened near nc central university's campus in durham early this morning. authorities say the 14-year-old boy was shot while leaving a party with the group of people. police didn't release any information about a suspect. happening tomorrow night, loved ones will gather for a vigil to remember a woman hit and killed while crossing a busy north charlotte street

police say collins ran in front of a car on west sugar creek road on wednesday. police say the driver tried to avoid her. tomorrow night's vigil will take place where that accident happened. new tonight, people packed uptown charlotte for the annual pub crawl in honor of st. patrick's day this week. this is is the 16th year. we talked to people decked out in irish green. >> beautiful night. great weather, great beers. a lot of people out, bars are packed. >> went from place to place, absolutely perfect. >> more than two dozen bars participated in that crawl. and a reminder to turn your clocks one hour ahead before you go to bed tonight. daylight saving time starts at 2:00 a.m. we will lose that extra hour of sleep, but warmer spring weather is on its way. as for tomorrow, meteorologist, john aarons is tracking showers to wrap up the weekend. john. >> as you finalize your weekend plans, i don't think you need to cancel anything here, you need to be ready to bring

of time and go back out. interactive radar is a great thing to have. it will tell you where it is raining when you step outside and of course providing you updates on facebook and twitter. looks like we have a round of showers in the mid-morning time and by the afternoon, going to get so humid we could see the possibility of thunderstorms. the area this is really favoring is spots west of i-77. so if you live up in morganton, lanor, you're going to get soaked. it's a wash out for you as we watch this monster system concentrate all its moisture through the blue ridge. areas out to the east along the pd river valley, peachland, troy, you might get a break. live early doppler 9, cloudy skies covering charlotte. we'll look -- vicki graf will be tracking that heavy rain

hickory, star town, down to the west as well. moo morganton. right around 9:00, 10:00 in the morning, but it doesn't last for ever. it's brief. moves on, and we get a break by 12:00, 2:00, and then by the afternoon hours, we'll have another pocket of showers come through. but again, it's quick. it will be rocking and rolling. i think most of the day is going to be all right. just make sure that radar with your phone is glued to you and certainly out to the west is where i am worried more about more significant downpours. as we heat up the atmosphere, showers and storms will be possible. we'll be on it right here at channel 9 and it will be on facebook live, maybe in the programming if we get a stronger storm. my thought is, that's not going to happen. high temperatures in the low to middle 70s with scattered showers and storms. certainly, if you live west of 77, that's problematic. it's a washout for you up in

up and through the mountains, i'm not seeing it. if you had plans to get out on storm threat. don't cancel here. be prepared to move below deck or about 1:00, 3:00, might consider not taking the boat out. but in the mid-morning hours, it should be all right for you. if you live out to the east, it will be much better there. a smaller rain chance. this is really favoring spots west of i-77 tomorrow. heavy rain and widening are the top risks on our threat tracker. here's the deal, we'll see rain stick around on monday as well. another storm threat and maybe then we could deal with widespread severe weather. remember, that storm, it spent a lot of time in the gulf coast states. it spent 48 hours here, thankfully on a much weaker extent. here's your five-day forecast, scattered showers and storms. that's the name of the game.
