those storms really won't get here until tonight. as you are heading out, be on the lookout for fog. we have dense fog advisories for the mountains, the foothills north of the charlotte area. that is where it is tough to see right now. also visibility is updated in lancaster, really tough to see. less than a mile. same with shelby, albemarle and concord. fog will be a problem early on and as we go throughout the afternoon, that is when we'll start to see more storms popping up so for your drive, fog in the morning and by 5:00, starting to see scattered showers coming closer to the charlotte area. however i'll take you through futurecast to show you when the best chance for the severe weather will be. first weather and traffic every 10 minutes. let's get a look at the morning drive with mark. >> more blue line construction that starts today, more lane restrictions as well. this is happening in the area where we have been seeing it. it has been happening on north tryon, harris boulevard at north tryon, and this morning,

be able to head northbound on north tryon and turn left on to j. w. clay. take mccullough drive to act as the alternate route. that starts this morning at 9:00 and lasts for bo two weeks. -- about two weeks. still no issues coming out of concord and kannapolis from nc 73 to 485 almost 70 miles per hour. flowing freely, and that continues for the west side, over the billy graham parkway, both directions coming to and from gaston county as well. today donald trump, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will be campaigning throughout our area. a day ahead of north carolina's presidential primaries. >> security will be a top concern, especially after recent violence at trump's event. joe bruno starts our team coverage at lenoir-rhyne where supporters are already lined up this morning. joe? >> reporter: donald trump won't be speaking until another four hours, but already there are hundreds of people here.

overnight to make sure they are first in line. this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see donald trump in hickory. university officials are putting final touches on the event preparations right now. that includes security. it's rally comes days after a violent protest forced trump to cancel a similar is he vent in chicago. supporters i spoke with say they don't think anything like that will happen today. >> we have our own small amount of violence here. i don't perceive that happening at this school. >> i think they are stupid. i think they should go home. >> reporter: and coming up in 30 minutes, the new poll, released overnight, that shows what is at stake here for donald trump during his visit to the tarheel state as well as other major races across the state. joe bruno, channel 9 eyewitness news. democratic candidate bernie sanders and hillary clinton will also be campaigning in the

hillary clinton will speak at charlotte's grady cole center in uptown at 9:15 p.m. sanders will hold a rally in university city, that begins at 4:30 in the afternoon. but doors will open three hours before that. supporters of both candidates say they are excited to hear their message. >> once people understand what bernie is about, then they'll most definitely vote for him. >> she is not a perfect candidate for everyone. for me she is. >> we reached out to cmpd about both venues and their plans for security today. we are waiting to hear back from them. channel 9 will have clues at each of today's campaign events and will stream them live at wsoc-tv.com. you can also follow us on twit foreconstant updates. today matthews town council could vote on a resolution to split from the charlotte- mecklenburg school district. the move comes as the school board considers changes to student assignment. mint hill is also considering a similar resolution. town leaders want to make sure

opportunity to stay in neighborhood schools they say that would create stability and predictability for parents. leaders in huntersville, cornelius and davidson all voted and passed a resolution for student assignment just last week those three resolutions ask cms leaders to make sure every student has a seat in their schools. more than 27,000 people responded to a student assignment survey. last week the results outlined the top three concerns. 80% said school staffing is most important, 75% said school environment, 67% said location and how close schools were to home. matthews board of commissioners meet tonight at 6:30 at the town hall. count on channel 9 to let you know what happens. tonight city leaders will approve contract renewals involving charlotte-douglas airport and several airlines.

airlines, delta and others were set to expire this summer. the new 10-year contract means charlotte will remain american's second largest hub. american airlines agreed to invest $500 million for new terminal and other future expansions at the airport. today people in cleveland county could hear about the coal ash risk for the rogers energy complex. the state department of environmental quality ranked the coal ash basins at that plan as low priority. that means they have to be closed by the year 2029. it is part of precautions after the spill in the dan river two years ago. tonight's meeting is at 6:00 at boiling springs town hall. the state is holding public meetings in each county where duke has a coal ash pond. last month was gaston county. the steam plant has been classify as a high priority site, which means the coal ash has to be removed by 2019. today the new unc system president will visit unc charlotte.

the school and meet about with students and staff. some students are expected to protest her visit. this is video from protests in the quad during spellings's first day on the job earlier this month. critics say the hiring process was not transparent and she is more concerned with politics than students. students at winthrop university may be paying more this fall semester. a new proposal asks for a 1% increase in student education and general fees. the school is raising current student fees rather than tuition because enrollment is down. officials say this method will help them raise the needed funds for next year's budget. it means fees for in state students will jump to $71 and $65 for out of state students. right now winthrop undergraduates pay the third highest in state costs for a public university in south carolina and more than $27,000. a cadet at the citadel pays

new this morning, maryland's governor ordered flags be flown at half staff in honor of a police officer shot and killed near a police station yesterday. the fbi is helping now in this investigation. police say someone shot officer colson inland over, which is a washington d.c. suburb. several officers shot back and hit the began man, who is expected to survive. police later arrested a second person, they call it an unprovoked attack. union county law enforcement is trying to deal with rising heroin abuse and overdoses in the county. our partners at the enquirer journal report an uptick of heroin abuse in the area started two years ago. last week the sheriff's office was called to five heroin overdoses. one was deadly. health and human services announced north carolina will get nearly $2.5 million in grants to help treat prescription abuse and the

it will go to seven health centers in the state in hopes of improving and expanding substance abuse services. last week the government announced it is holding a can't test to create a mobile app for patients hooked on opioids and heroin. $30,000 will be awarded in prizes for the winning app prototypes. officials hope the apps can quickly connect patients to counseling and treatment options. you probably notice the gas prices have been creeping up recently and experts say they are likely going to go even higher. an asheville gas station owner has raised prices $.20? a 40 hour period. if you need to fill up this morning, you are going to pay about $1.78 in the charlotte area for a gallon. the state price average is $1.85. south carolina is around 1970.

and clicking on the traffic tap. scroll over to gas prices. weather and traffic every 10 minutes. >> here's meteorologist vicki graf. she is keeping an eye on fog this morning and also tracking severe weather for today. >> reporter: that's right stephanie. and fog is a problem this morning, especially north of charlotte from boone through hickory and lincolnton. that is where it is really tough to see. you can't see more than a mile in front of you, so take it slow on the roads. visibility dropped in albermarle and lancaster as well. fog will be a problem early on. and it is going to be another muggy and warm day ahead. we are in the mid to upper 50s to low 60s, taking you through futurecast, we climb quickly. by lunch time already in the low 70s and highs today in the upper 70s as you head toward lancaster, chesterfield and rockingham you will be in the low 80s. the warmth will lead to the threat for rain and stronger storms. the storms won't get here until later tonight.

craig head in north charlotte. following a shooting in north charlotte at 5:45 we told you one person was taken to the hospital with potentially life- threatening injuries. eyewitness news reporter britney johnson is on scene for us live. what are investigators telling you now? >> reporter: i just spoke with investigators within the last 30 seconds. they are telling me this scene behind us at tryon square is one of multiple scenes that may be connected to a shooting here. we have learned there is a club here, a social club they tell us is open late into the evening and people are saying this parking lot was packed with people who were at a party in this area when that shooting happened. officers tell us this started with a call for an armed robbery, but then they learned there was a shooting victim who

away from here. he asked people to call 911 for him, he had been shot in the legs. that is the person who has gone to the loss. hospital. and then police are focusing a lot of attention here in the centers. there are markings for shell casings, also shattered glass glass. someone else showed up with their car that had been shot into. those people took their car to police headquarters to get help with that shooting investigation. so again, multiple pieces, multiple factors, all leading police back to this area here at tryon square. they believe it was full of people, and so far they know of one person who has been taken to the hospital with the gunshot wounds to the legs. multiple police cars have showed up since we have been here, so this investigation has continued to expand. we are going to work to get

they are working to get the very basic facts together right now, lots going on right now at tryon square, we'll continue bringing updates as they develop. britney johnson channel 9 eyewitness news. as we get more from her we'll stay here in the breaking news center and bring that to you. we are also following a train derailment in kansas this morning. 20 people are in the hospital. you can see the firefighters are top of this, trying to get people out. highway patrol officials say five of these nine train cars flipped on fire their sides. -- on to their sides. no word yet on what caused this derailment. in the last 15 minutes the mother of one passenger told our sister station in wichita her daughter, a college student was helping out of a window

going 75 miles per hour. it derailed in cimarron. you can look at the map to give you an idea, it was halfway on its trip near wichita. the passengers who were not hurt were taken it a nearby rec center. as folks are gathering there and telegot alternate transportation to get to their final destination. because this happened so far from a major see it is taking quite awhile to get video. but as we get new information we are monitoring it we'll bring it to you. we will be calling attorney nick mackey today, after a judge threw out a man's 30-year prison sentence and conviction because he says mackey slept during the trial. the appellate judge in virginia overturned the case friday, one

30 minutes at least. mackey ran for mecklenburg county sheriff in 2007, he won the race but the decision was overturned. he pleaded guilty to a contempt of court charge after failing to show up for a client's trial in 2007. we have called the number list today mackey's law office but have not heard back. weather and traffic every 10 minutes. >> here's meteorologist vicki graf in severe weather center 9, keeping an eye on the developing fog situation for us this morning. >> that's right john. we have dense fog advisories for the mountains the foothills along the i-40 corridor. it is tough to see on some of those roads, so take it slow and make sure to use your low beams. not dealing with any showers right now, fog is the only problem. but going through the day, we are going to keep the threat for storms. i'm tracking the large system out to the west. more than 300 miles west of the charlotte area. that is going to make a run our direction later today. not going to get here until tonight though. but still you want to make sure

to time it all out for you on futurecast, clouds, fog early on will start to lift by 9:00 or 10:00. seeing a mix of sun and clouds, that is going to warm us up quickly again it had. toward 5:00, still could be dealing with wet roads for the evening drive. toward 8:00, 9:00 tracking downpours that will be pushing through, some of these will be strong, possibly severe storms, so keep an eye on the skies later tonight. that clears out quickly though and heading through the overnight hours, more of a clearing could see lingering showers in the mountains. so taking a look at our threat tracker for this evening, our main concerns some of these isolated storms will contain very heavy rainfall, making it tough to drive on the roads. can't rule out hail and damaging winds. be prepared for quickly changing weather today and make

a minor delay, u.s. 74 looking good. no big slowdowns. traffic is building. getting busy around briar creek heading through the freeway section but right now we are on schedule at 6:31. no accidents or stalled vehicles. we are following a shooting in north charlotte. police are piecing together evidence from three different scenes. britney johnson is live he on east craighead. >> reporter: this is the tryon square parking lot. you can see behind us investigators just put down yellow markers. they have been counting the shell casings in this parking lot where they say the shooting happened but they tell us right now officers are at three district stevens all tied back to the shooting in this parking lot. the first call came out an armed robbery call.

there then they got a call nearby off richie avenue. a man shot asked police to call for them. we are told he was shot in the legs. and then a third person showed up at cmpd headquarters. their car had been shot into and they told police it all stemmed back to an altercation here in this parking lot on tryon square. it remains very active this morning, multiple officers have showed up to continue helping in this investigation. they are still in the very early stages as they try to figure out exactly what happened here but they are spread out at three different scenes. again that tie back for the shooting -- to the shooting in this parking lot. live in north charlotte, britney johnson channel 9 eyewitness news. today charlotte city council will decide whether a school should go up where the old eastland mall should be. >> the lot in east charlotte is 80 acres.

street for several blocks. we are expecting more than 1000 people today. overnight, while they were all waiting, the candidate they support donald trump has a dominating lead in north carolina, according to a new left leading public policy poll. it shows trump in first place with 44% and ted cruz in second with 33%. the poll covered other major races and issues across the state as well, including the connect nc bonds. if approved, $2 million will be sprinkled across the state. according to the results the bonds are expected to pass with more than 60% of the vote between republicans and democrats, but some say the bonds will just pass debt to future generations. >> the new generation and the new people coming up is going to be the people that you have to live with it. that is people my kids are going to have to be around and everything, that is what i'm worried about. >> reporter: coming back to the scene right now, you can see

police are searching for a shooter in north charlotte. police spread across three different crime scenes. britney johnson is live on north craighead. what are police saying now? >> reporter: they actually just started tearing down the crime scene tape from this parking lot where they have been for a little more than an hour and a half investigating a shooting they say started here just before 5:00. we have a timeline for you because they have three different scenes connected to the shooting. they tell us someone called police or police got called to an armed robbery. shortly after that someone showed up with a gunshot wound and asked people to call police. that person went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. at the same time people showed

also in lincolnton and shelby. you see visibility near zero. that means it is tough to see on the roads, especially the car in front of you. so take it slow. here's a view from king street in boone. as we go throughout the afternoon, we have a slight risk for seeing strong and severe storms. the time frame from that doesn't bring it in until later tonight and that is thanks to this storm, which is more than 300 miles west of the charlotte area. that is going to make a run toward our area later today. to time it all out for you on futurecast, a cloudy start, a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. it will be warm and muggy and that will be fuel for spotty showers closer to 5:00. but you'll notice they will be few and far between. it is mainly after sunset we'll see this line of stronger storms rolling through and some of these could contain strong,
