going on behind me. some of what's going on. they have been searching through this vehicle, which we now learned belong to the three plain clothes officers who police say were shot at. we're told that police responded to an area near here. this is the 2900 block of milton road right in the boys and girls club parking lot. they responded to these areas after calls that someone had fired a weapon and also assaulted a family member. now police could not find that suspect, but say that the three plain clothed officers found that they were in this area, moves in closer when they approached those suspects, they say that's when the men shot at them. we're told that two people are in custody. police say they are not looking for anyone else. they have also told us tonight that they found a weapon in this area. now police say that those officers are being questioned. the two people who shot at police are also being questioned. but again, this is still an active scene and active investigation. we will keep you updated on any new developments as we have

>> thank you, dashawn. i dug through our archives and found in the same area nearby two officers were shot and killed back in 2007. jeff shelton and shawn clark were shot in the head when they responded to a disturbance call at the timber ridge apartments near milton road. police arrested montgomery in that case. >> channel 9 just learned new details about a shooting in the heart of uptown charlotte in the middle of the day. we brought you this story live on the air with coverage minutes after this happened this afternoon. >> and just in the past 75 shooting. all new tonight at 11:00. dashawn brown tracked the recent rise in crime. >> police say what started here as an altercation ended like this. >> and then, i look over, i hear four shots. >> for hours, investigators canvas this busy corner in

here multiple times. left behind, lay clothes, shoes, fenced in as part of the scene. neighbors i spoke to once call this a safe place. >> disheartening. >> and question if the violence here is only a reflection of a growing trend in uptown. >> it's sad. and your down here with all this big business. you have all the banks. you have the restaurant, the basketball. so many people getting killed. it isn't summer yet. >> for a look at violent crimes over the next six months. within a mile of where the shooting happened wednesday, we found close to 400 incidents. including assault, burglary, robbery, weapons, sex crimes, and homicide. in the last month, one of those shootings happened here on 3rd street. the man charged with murder accused of killing someone in the middle of the street. weeks later, residents at the sky house apartments woke up to gunfire. with three men accused of

cars and a hotel. also in uptown. >> felt safe, and then knowing that happened, it's a little scarier. >> dashawn brown, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> also in the last 24 hours, police say someone tried to rob a johnson and whale student at knife point on graham street by knight stadium. we're asking police how the numbers we found compare to the numbers last year. so far, we have not heard back. >> new tonight, channel 9 learned despite the cost to taxpayers, charlotte's former mayor had no choice but to travel from a west virginia prison here to charlotte today to admit to a misdemeanor voter fraud charge. now we were in court today when patrick cannon pled guilty. a judge sentenced him to one day in jail for casting a ballot after he had been a convicted felon. convicted of taking bribes in office. >> constitutional rights are not inexpensive. in this case, mr. cannon had the absolute right to be

>> now cannon will be taken back to federal prison tomorrow. he is scheduled to be released from prison in january 2017. i wanted to know what it cost to taxpayers to have cannon brought back here to charlotte just to enter that plea. i learned it cost $157.04 per day that he stays at the mecklenburg county jail. he is staying for two days. the department of public safety told me it cannot get us a final prize on his transportation until he returns to west virginia. after that record breaking heat today, we're tracking colder air headed back our way. chief meteorologist, steve udelson has more on what to expect tomorrow. >> coming in batches after a record shattering 86 in charlotte this afternoon. felt more like mid june than mid march. we seen temperatures cool already this evening. we have fallen 15 to 20 degrees already. got a 60 in statesville. 61 rock hill. charlotte checks in with 69. mid 40s across the high country

upper 40s first thing tomorrow morning. closer to where we should be in mid march. some 30s sprinkled about. wakeup forecast calls for readings in the upper 40s. you'll need it this time. mid 50s by 9:00 a.m. when i come back, i'll be using a future cast and i program to show you how soon cool air begins to work our way. that's coming up. >> check the temperature. eyewitness news daybreak, we have weather, updates every ten minutes starting at 4:30 a.m. >> tonight, firefighters are saying the dry conditions and gusty winds allowed this fire to spread quickly along highway 321 in caldwell county. and it will be even worse tomorrow they say. firefighters scrambled this afternoon to try to contain that fire. it happened in the woods near some businesses in hudson. the north carolina forest service believe it was set on purpose. it only burned about a quarter area, but conditions made it difficult to fight.

know, we are getting those march winds. be careful. >> the north carolina forestry service says that it responded to three separate fires in caldwell and burke counties this afternoon. new at 11:00, police just obtained a warrant to search a missing teenager's facebook page for clues they hope will lead them to her. no one has seen micayla since february the 29th. police believe that the 14-year- old was communicating with an unidentified person on facebook before she disappeared. she was last seen on doctor carver road in west charlotte. >> we have new information tonight about an international gun smuggling investigation in charlotte. today a judge refused bond for richmond. prosecutors say that he brought 63 guns and lied on federal applications and then came back from a trip to ghana with $30,000 hidden inside a shoe. the judge ruled him a flight

had travel plans to go back to ghana in june. >> in the last three hours, a popular south end restaurant dedicated to newly redesigned patio to a worker who was killed in a car accident. a coworker paid tribute to a long-time max speed shop worker tonight. police say a drunk driver hit and killed putnam as she was crossing south boulevard near that restaurant last january. >> everyone knows her. everyone is a supporter of her. we all love her to death. she has been an asset to this business for ever. >> tonight's event included a silent auction and all the proceeds are going to putnam's family. a grand jury indicted greg wheeling, jr., with second- degree murder for putnam's death. he was previously charged with felony death by vehicle. police say he was driving drunk and speeding when he hit putnam. >> all new tonight at 11:00 and only on channel 9, caught on camera. thieves trying to blow torch their way into a south

only eyewitness news reporter spoke with that store owner about the crime and the clues he now hopes will help police crack this case. alexa. >> yes, erica, the owner reached out to police here and then to channel 9. tonight he is hoping someone will recognize the suspects or their vehicle captured on surveillance or have information about the unusual way they tried to get into his shop. >> this is where they torched it. >> it was a sight matt king couldn't believe. today he showed me the hole in his security door where two men used a torch to try and break into his gun shot full of hundreds of guns and ammunition. it happened just before 3:00 this morning and he caught it all on video. >> notice it has the black vinyl top. >> notice the suspects back in their car, which is the light colored mercury grand marquee with a vinyl top. both men get out, one quickly opens the trunk, and grabs the torch connected to two large gas tanks.

flash of the torch reflecting off the other suspect. who is wearing a mask and keeping a lookout. smoke from the burning metal blurs the security camera. seconds later, for an unknown reason, the suspects leave only to return again 20 minutes later. and then leave again with nothing. still, the owner wants these men caught. >> he may work, have some sort of affiliation with metal working. >> the owner wasn't able to get a tag number. the suspects put a plastic bag over the license plate. but he pointed out the missing hub cap from the rear passenger wheel. hopes someone will come forward with information. >> we just don't need these firearms in the hands of the wrong people. >> now old pineville road runs behind this shop, which again, is off south boulevard. in fact, in the video, we could see headlights drivers passing by anyone with information is asked to call police.

ashwell, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> donald trump is well on his way to the republican nomination, but it is certainly not a lock yet and if he doesn't get it, the front runner predicts outrage. >> i think you would have riots. i'm representing a tremendous, many, many, millions of people. >> those comments come as we're getting a look at some new video of another violent attack during trump's rally in fayetteville last week. a student at east carolina university video taped deputies wrestling a person to the floor after an argument. he says that's when deputies told him he had to go. as the student was being escorted out, a man in his suit called him names before taking a swing at him. meanwhile, five north carolina deputies have been suspended for their actions. a protester was escorted after he was punched right there by that 78-year-old man. the cumberland county sheriff says those deputies were demoted and suspended without pay. >> we're staying on top of the breaking news for you out of

that their hero i we're back now with more on that breaking news out of east charlotte where two people are now in custody after police say that they fired shots at officers in the parking lot of the boys and girls club along milton road. officers tell us why now they are not looking for any other suspects at this hour. police say all this started with a family dispute nearby. three plain clothes cmpd officers were in the area responding to the milton road area when they saw two people running.

shots and then headed into the woods. you could see the crime scene tape, still a very active scene. officers chased the two suspects and took them into custody. thankfully, no one was hurt. we'll continue to bring you updates on this investigation and more about what we learn about the suspects tomorrow morning on eyewitness news daybreak starting at 4:30 a.m. now we turn to a heartwarming story of twins. they got a surprise today that they have been waiting for for a year. >> their dad has been serving overseas. they had no idea when they went to school today they would be leaving school in their father's arms. sergeant lewis grady's 12-year- old twins thought they would be leaving. instead, we all learned just how much they miss their dad when he walked in to surprise them. daughter caylee jumped into her

and then son logan was there, too. >> i missed you guys so much. >> grady was gone for a year, stationed helping to provide security away from what matters most. >> it was so hard. i have never been away from them and never been away from them, this was my first deployment. first time being separated away from my kids and my family. logan was all about his schoolwork today until he saw his dad. >> what a big surprise. most of that going to an assembly. i thought, i have work to do and i want to get this done. i didn't know this would happen. >> the first order of business back at home after plenty of hugs, dad and caylee cut down the yellow ribbon. a symbol for a soldier serving away from home now ready to come down. >> there we go. >> now after all of that, there

grady went to see his parents who had no idea he is now back in north carolina. we have pictures and video at this reunion at wsoctv.com. >> tonight, president barack obama is asking congress to confirm his supreme court justice nomination. today, the president nominated judge merit garland. the senate may hold up garland's nomination. gop leaders vowed to block any nomination made by president obama. his successor should choose the next justicece stock futures are trending up after a good day on wall street. at the closing bell, the dow was up 74 points. nasdaq closed up 35 points today. one big reason for the boost, today the federal reserve announced that it plans to keep the interest rates as they are for now. most economists believe the fed will eventually raise the rates twice later on this year, most

brace for unbareable allergies if you're a sufferer. the pollen on trees combined with strong, gusty winds will make it harder to breathe over the next few days. the buds are breaking out on oak trees across the charlotte area. that's a top pollen producer. shame on you, oak trees. you can blame the winter for the intense pollen. we had the 5th wettest winter in decades. when trees are stressed out, they compensate by making more flowers. chief meteorologist, steve udelson has more on the wind. >> there has been plenty of both. pine and cotton wood. tree pollen continuing to get worse and worse. the pollen count tripled between yesterday and today. and it was blown around on winds as high as 30 miles an hour over a good chunk of the charlotte area. let's call it march madness. it's been an incredible month of march so far. and a fourth driest. that, too, is not a good combination. and keep in mind how records go

we basically need rain to literally wash it out of the air. i don't see much of a chance until we head toward, especially late saturday into early sunday. maybe the timing is not so great, but pollen sufferers, beggars can't be choosers, we need the rain. here's the future cast tomorrow, a few high clouds in the mountains, one or two passing into the charlotte area. uptown, noticeably cooler than today. i wouldn't exactly call it chilly for mid march. still 10 degrees above average. temperatures rise to the mid 70s tomorrow. not too bad. huntersville, on the lake, temperatures rise to the low to mid 70s. some afternoon clouds around, but nothing big. certainly not enough to impact any outdoor plans. and out toward chesterfield, afternoon highs in the upper 70s tomorrow afternoon. after a fairly cool, let's call it seasonally cool start. tomorrow, st. patrick's day. lots of folks will be out tomorrow celebrating. weather won't get in your way. we'll still be above 70 before 6:00 or so.

which tomorrow will be about 7:30 or so. but the warm weather soon to be history. we'll be tracking much cooler air. these shades of blue are more winter-like temperatures that will be arriving in time for the weekend. how cold? well, maybe the possibility of some mountain snow. not on the charlotte area. just some chilly rain late saturday into early sunday. but look at the highs. we grown awfully used to readings 80 or better. readings in the mid 50s and probably lower than that on sunday. five-day forecast, there is good news beyond that five-day. we will cool it down. three straight days with readings in the 50s. it won't last long. by next wednesday, forecasting highs back to 70 or so. it's a quick hit. and may well be winter's last gas. >> a dip and we come right back up. >> the fight over toll lanes is impacting elections again. the primary race so close. it could be overturned. >> and caught on camera.

deputies are looking for the man they say stole these giant campers from storage lots in the middle of the day. we have these surveillance pictures from regent parkway where a camper vanished last week. a man in a black dodge pickup hooked up to it and towed it right out of the lot. deputies think the same man struck again at a lot on east main and rock hill. they think they are going to be sold on an auction site. >> if anybody out there bought one of these trailers and think they got a deal that was too good to be true, they did. >> now the campers are likely

>> new at 11:00, a man charged with child abuse and drug charges after authorities say he was found unresponsive in front of a dick's sporting goods in hickory. police told our partners at the daily record that john laboda had ten pills with him and a one-year-old child nearby. the manager told police the 30- year-old tried to buy a shotgun in the store. that child is now in dss custody. >> police are looking for the person who stole nearly $10,000 from a wal-mart super center. channel 9 obtained a police report. it says a man robbed the store on super center drive northeast last night at around 7:15. the report says the thief didn't have a weapon. police have not said how he was able to get away with all that cash. >> follow us on twitter to keep up with breaking news, weather, and all the top stories of the day.
