cooler after a record high yesterday of 86. we cooled back to 40s this morning. that is impressive. 43 albemarle. 54 charlotte. 30s in the mountains to begin the day. but nothing in the way of the morning drive on this st. patrick's day. we warm back up into the mid- 50s by 9:00. still in the mid-70s but that is about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. we have begun the step down process. it's slow for now. we will show you how it will pick up with even cooler weather into the weekend straight ahead. i am in the breaking news center right now continuing to follow a developing story. channel 9 is the only crew at this scene where state police are investigating a deputy involved shooting. let's go to the live look from boat landing road between wadesboro and rockingham. all you can see is this sheriff squad car blocking -- they are keeping us off the road away

investigators tell us around 11:00 last night a deputy shot a suspect. that person was flown to carolinas medical center in charlotte. we are asking investigators what lead to the shooting and the suspect's condition. we will continue following the story throughout the morning and bring you any few information as soon as we get it. a story we will follow for the day ahead. in a few hours people in northwest charlotte will have a chance to learn about the i-77 toll lane project and how it will impact local businesses. a transportation update at 11:30 at the pine island country club. leaders will discuss the toll lane project and the completion of i-485 and its impact on charlotte. the meeting comes as some believe the fight over the controversial toll lane project may have impacted a local primary race. the race between charles jeter and challenger tom davis is still up in the air this morning.

county officials plan to count the absentee ballots tomorrow then recount the votes. jeter initially through support behind the toll project but since called on the governor to break off the deal. davis ran his campaign on a no tolls platform. >> the people in jeter's hometown are looking for more than words at this point. they are looking for action on the i-77 toll project. >> even though governor mccory one the nomination to keep his job in a landslide, voters are not happy with him and his assistance on the -- stance on the toll lane. the primary win wasn't the only victory for the governor tuesday night. yesterday mccory traveled the state touting the passage of the bonds package that will fund 90 million toward a state of the art science lab, $70,000

essential projects like a power plant to help cpcc expand. the state national guard will get money from the bond. it will allow the guard to move forward with a 70 million- dollar plan to renovate three sites across the state including the youth institution in morganton t. it will be a regional readiness center. we have the results from tuesday's primary election on our web site. look in the election section under the news tab. a local group plans to honor a man shot and killed in east charlotte days before his 25th birthday. mothers will hold a candlelight memorial service. police say someone shot and killed him during an argument at this apartment complex off w.t. harris boulevard last thursday. two others were hurt. police have not said if anyone will face charges. tonight's vigil starts at 7:30 in west charlotte. it is being held at camp green

police say a man abused a child seriously injuring him. officers sent these pictures to us. they issued a warrant for jonathan earl. it stems from an incident in december. call officers if you have seen him. he is known to change his hairstyle and/or glasses. we are asking charlotte mecklenburg school leaders if two buses will be used to pick up students this morning after a carbon monoxide scare yesterday. we brought you this story on midday. a bus driver taking students to school reported symptoms of being exposed to carbon monoxide. fire and medic crews immediately responded to the school evacuating students and checking over the buses. >> i have faith in cms. they do the job. >> investigators couldn't find a carbon monoxide leak. fire crews checked out a second bus parked nearby. police hope a new search

missing teenager last seen more than two weeks ago. that warrant allows officers to search mikaela hutchison's facebook page. they building the 14-year-old was communicating with an unidentified person on facebook before she disappeared. she was last seen february 29th in west charlotte. today president obama's mcto fill the vacant supreme court pick is expected to visit capitol hill and speak to democratic senators. yesterday the president nominated merrick garland to fill antonin scalia's seat. the senate may hold up the nomination. senate republican leaders vowed to block any nomination that president obama makes. >> i have fulfilled by constitutional duty. it's time for the senate to do theirs. >> it's the senate's constitutional right to act on a check with a president and withhold its consent. >> senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says garland won't

senate republicans said they will speak with garland. after much anticipation, unc and duke will play the first round games today in ncaa men's basketball tournament. the blue devils are the number 4 seed in the west region and face wilmington at 12:15. they hope for back to back tournament wins after winning the national tournament last year. they have the third best all time record wins with 105. it's the second time duke faced unc wilmington. the tar heels are getting ready to play game one in raleigh versus florida gulf coast. unc is the number one seed in the east region and play at 7:20 a.m. the guard is confident heading into the tourney even if people are doubting their defense. >> we have always had talent since i have been here. we are putting it together to become a complete team, this year especially.

eat rates for great rides.d from my kids and everything. an inmate that escaped from rock hill two months ago is accused of shooting a man in georgia while on the run. >> investigators had been searching for zachary reeves since he escaped from the catawba center. video shows him stealing a gun and ammo from a nearby school when deputy arrested reeves. he admitted to several crimes

the victim survived but has a bullet in his neck. a lincoln county man is due in court after they say he shot a neighbor and threatened three others. gary ball is charged. the neighbor is expected to survive. new this morning, activists are concerned about some of the plans scheduled in myrtle beach for this year's bike fest. they are upset organizers are planning a traffic loop for the memorial day weekend festival. the group asked the city for an alternative after people were stuck in the loop for hours last year. city leaders didn't come up with one. naacp argues the loop is discriminatory and has concerns about police problems. >> it's for over 10 years we have been monitoring the situation.

black bike week and the traffic person set up. >> city leaders say the loop isn't meant to be discriminatory just to keep traffic moving. myrtle beach police plan to use new tools to keep crowds safe at the bike fest. they will use a license plate reader to alert them when vehicles are linked to crimes in the area. no reported shootings last year. in 2014 three people died in ate separate shootings. cms parents and employees can offer thoughts on the 2017, 2018 school calendar. the district posted an online poll. you can choose between a long erwin tear break and more usable makeup days. the board is expected to approve the calendar in may. school districts are having time finding teachers because fewer college students will major in education.

researchers blame low teacher pay and lack of responsible in the classroom -- respect in the classroom. a local military family is back together after a surprise reunion in mint hill. >> these two 12-year-old twins thought they were going to learn about college and careers during an assembly at their middle school. instead, their dad, sergeant lewis grady walked in to surprise them after serving a year overseas in the army national guard. >> it was hard. i have never been away from them. this was the first deployment, first time being separated from my kids and family. >> now the family plans to cut down yellow ribbon hanging on this tree, a symbol for a soldier serving away from home. >> that is one of the best ones

charlotte using independence boulevard 15 minutes. almost 50 miles per hour is the average speed. 51 to uptown a 15-minute ride with the average speed of 37 miles per hour. wall street futures, dow is up 46 points. nasdaq up 11 and half. one big reason for the boost on wall street, the federal reserve announced it will keep interest rates as they are. most economists believe the feds will raise rates twice this year but most likely it will begin in june. a gaston county woman is in the hospital after being overcome by smoke as her house burned around her. >> it's engulfed. >> ahead at 5:45, the drastic measures first responders took to get her to safety. >> one of the worst times of

penalt this couple could be facing the death penalty after being charged with murdering the man's uncle in stanly county. a judge refused bond for tony hern and his girlfriend. investigators say they killed hern's uncle and tried to dump his body in alexander county about 80 miles from the home they shared with him. >> never expect for something this heinous to happen to a person like that. so, it was a shock for the entire community. >> investigators believe the murder happened after albemarle home but don't know what the motive was. they say more charges could be filed. time is 5:25. part of a road will be closed next month so crews can replace an old bridge. the d.o.t. will shut down part of salens

he faces several charges including assault, possession of a firearm and resisting an officer. police say he was in a fight with the victim yesterday afternoon on east trade street. it escalated and smith shot the man several times. we spoke to a witness at the scene. >> i look over. i hear four shots. it's all coming down. >> we crime mapped the area where the shooting happened near the transit center. close to 400 incidents happened within a mile over the last six months that includes assaults, robberies, sex crimes and homicide. new this morning, channel 9 is asking what caused this crash involving a cmpd cruiser last night. it happened around 9:00. in the video you can see the cruiser is on a tow truck. the other car right here has damage around the front bumper.

we will bring you any new details as soon as we learn them. channel 9 discovered that crash when we were on the way to this shooting scene in east charlotte. police say two people are in custody accused of firing shots at officers. it happened around 8:00 in the parking lot of the boys and girls club. police say officers were responding to a family dispute nearby when two people started running from the scene. one fired shots and ran into the woods. officers arrested them shortly after. no one was hurt. channel 9 dug through our archives and found in the same area a gunman shot and killed two officers in 2007. they were responding to a

last night tribute was paid to kelly putnam. they held an event in her honor including a silent auction with the proceeds going to putnam's family. >> everyone knows her. everyone is a supporter of her. they all love her to death. she has been an asset to this business forever. >> police say a drunk driver killed putnam as she crossed south boulevard. last week a grand jury indicted him on a charge of putnam's death. police say he was driving drunk and speeding. neighbors say this serious crash in caldwell county crashes have happened. investigators say a teen pulled in to the path of another car school road. road. nobody was seriously hurt. neighbors say they have seen more than a dozen crashes there

people died. >> i heard a big crash and i knew there was an accident. we have many accidents here before. so, i ran out to see what happened. >> firefighters say they hope the north carolina d.o.t. will consider putting a caution light to prevent future wrecks. the nor carolina bar suspended the license for an attorney who other lawyers accuse of sleeping during a trial. former state representative nick mackey cannot except new cases. state bar officials told channel 9 they suspended him because mackey did not complete the yearly 12 hours of continuing legal education. if he corrects the problem he can have the license reinstated. last week an appellate court overturned a case he defended accusing him of sleeping during the trial. fox news canceled the republican debate after donald trump said he wouldn't be there. he has a prior speaking engagement and won't participate.

governor john kasich said he won't be there if trump won't. ted cruz said he would be willing to show up. monday's debate in salt lake city would have been the 13th for the republican candidates and the last one before the convention in july. in january, trump skipped a fox news debate in des moines, iowa, amid a dispute with megyn kelly. he said that may have contributed to his second place finish in iowa. south carolina governor preys ted cruz wins the nomination for president. she endorsed marco rubio but he pulled out after losing his home state. halley will support the --

no smoke or flames. that is the restaurant that was burning. they have it under control. part of albemarle is shut down because of the response from emergency crews. we are keeping an eye on that. it started about 3:30 this morning. we have video that we will show you in a little bit. they believe it started in the kitchen. damage estimates up to $50,000. we will talk to mark taylor about the traffic issues especially since it will pick up. a 71-year-old woman was overcome by smoke from her burning home. >> gaston county police and fire were called to the home early monday morning. officer john kaiser kicked in the backdoor of the home and found the woman passed out. he braved the flames to drag her to safety until other first responders arrived. >> i have never been in an

this. you have a responsibility, when you are there, you are the police. you are expected to do something. >> reporter: the woman told dispatchers she was trying to save a cat from the fire. when she tried to get out, she couldn't find her cane. she is in critical condition. a gaston county district attorney could decide next week whether to charge a driver who crashed into a home killing the couple inside. the highway patrol and d.a. discussed presenting the case to a grand jury that meets wednesday. troopers said earlier this month the truck crashed into the home off highway 182 which ruptured a gas line and caused an explosion. the home owners were killed. if you are planning a trip to myrtle beach this summer, make sure you don't litter. they passed a measure of zero tolerance for lighter bugs. right now you get a warning.
