people may need jacket. much different than yesterday morning. >> that is right. you'll feel the difference and it is the official start to spring but mother nature is not ready to let go of this winter weather. we already have freeze watches and warns in charlotte. that goes tonight into monday morning. that is the sign of the cold air on the way. right now, it is chilly to start the day off, lower 40s so if you're heading to church, it is palm sunday. grab a jacket. upper 30s in the mountains and it is not going to warm up much throughout the day. we're running 15 to 20 degrees colder in some spots than yesterday so you'll notice that difference and the chill will stick around throughout the day. we have some rain that pushed through overnight, but showers today. >> you can always stay on top of the changing weather conditions in your

not on the air. download the app for free and stay informed even weather alerts. we're following breaking news this morning. north carolina highway troopers are investigating a deadly crash. this crash happened around 2:00 this morning. two lanes were closed overnight for several hours with traffic passing through on the median. around 5:15 this morning, those lanes reopenednt we're asking troopers for more information on the people who were killed and what led up to the crash. cmpd is investigating two homicides in charlotte that happened in very busy areas yesterday including one right next to a ymca filled with chipped records and families. the first started off on central avenue in east charlotte. then hours later, police were called to a deadly shooting on donald ross road near west boulevard.

>> reporter: police are still looking for suspects. people we spoke with say this violence has to stop. just before 11:00 saturday morning, police were called to east charlotte where they found jeffrey johnson with multiple gunshot wounds, he was pro mentioned dead at the scene. it happened yards from a busy area of restaurants and people going about their day. >> my niece, i have her all the time and i used to be out here in the streets. >> reporter: before 2:00 p.m., another deadly shooting in west charlotte. 27-year-old jacorei davis was also pronounced dead at the scene. for hours they collected evidence as people close to davis rushed to the area devastated by his death. the west charlotte shooting happened where families were

>> i was like going into the building and a lot of police started showing up in the area. >> they could kill an innocent child. it is bad. >> reporter: area residents tell us they want the violence to stop. >> it is a continuous thing. >> reporter: does it scare you? >> yes. it is frightening. >> reporter: police say the shooting in west charlotte was not a random act of violence. there have been eight homicides in the city of charlotte in 2016. elsa gillis, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> >> the increase in violence has the police chief acting for more help on the streets. he asked for 125 additional officers, 80 support staff positions as well, a 17 million doll last request. city council members are putting together a budget. they have not determined how they will pay for that request.

news alert as we heard about both homicides. cmpd is searching for an attempted murder suspect that cut off his electronic monitor. officers are looking for nais man, christopher crittenton. they say he cut off his electronic monitor around last night. he was ordered to wear it on a condition of his pretrial release. along with the attempted first- degree murder charge, he faces robbery charges. >> >> police responded to an armed robbery in that same area last night. cmpd told us it happened at a speedway gas station on university city boulevard. this morning, we are asking if anyone was injured or if police have any suspects. troopers are investigating a crash in shelby that killed a 16-year-old girl after the car she was in broke down in the middle of the road. officers say the teen and a passenger got out of their car at the intersection of boarders and oak grove roads around 1:00 yesterday morning.

of the car when two other vehicles hit them. the passenger was taken to cm c in charlotte. we're asking investigators if the other drivers are going to face any charges. power is back on at a south charlotte apartment complex after a car slammed into it. a neighbor said he heard a car engine racing there. he said that when he looked out the window, the car crashed into the building. medic took the driver to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. >> >> people in greenville, south carolina held a vigil for a police officer killed in the line of duty last week. you can see here in this photo, residents turned to allen jacobs' patrol car into a shrine. they left flowers and other tributes. jacobs was shot and killed friday by the 17-year-old gang member according to police. jacobs was questioning mackey about a gun purchase but he

jacobs was an iraq war veteran and married with a child on the way. >> >> president barack obama will travel to cuba for a three-day historic trip following a breakthrough between relations in the countries. this is the first time a u.s. president has been to cuba since 1928. the u.s. economic embargo is still in place which only congress can lift. president obama will meet with the nation's leader. u.s. hotel company star wood signed a deal to renovate and run three crew ban hotels. u.s. chains will be back on the island for the first time in 50 years. all are state run so the deal signed yesterday puts a major u.s. corporation into business with the cuban government. united states health officials are reminding the president and other oh specials

the centers for disease control and prevention is adding the island to the travel notice about virus. the virus has not been a factor in the president's travel decision and is not expected to be in the future. zika virus heavily impacted the caribbean and latin american countries and brazil. it is linked to serious birth defects. it is known to cause adult paralysis. there are six cases right here in north carolina. >> >> investigators are looking into possible pilot error or other mechanical failures as a deadly cause of a plane crash in russia. investigators suggested bad weather could be the reason the flight crashed killing 62 people. they say if the crash was not a mechanical failure, it may have been caused by the pilot not hand lick the weather

all 62 people on board were killed when that flight crashed in southern russia friday night. the victims include 55 passengers and 7 crew members. officials do not believe there were any americans on board that flight. right now the fbi is investigating a body found on the campus. we have learned an autopsy is set for tomorrow. the body was found behind a maintenance building friday night. right now the police chief does not believe the person is a student, faculty or staff member at the college. the battle over north carolina's governor seat could be the most expensive gubernatorial race in the country. they won in the primaries. the two campaigns have already raised more than $13 million combined with cooper raising the most. experts expect the race to be pretty fight. this week a judge could decide if lawmakers have to

vicki graf has an update for us on the cooling conditions. well good sunday morning. it is a cloudy and cooler start to the day. that is going to be it trend through the afternoon. it is quiet now. the showers that pushed through have cleared. as we head through your hour-by- hour forecast for the first part of the day, can't rule out a few stray showers. in the mountains cold enough for some rain to mix in with a few flurries and then more steady rain well push through. if you're heading out for a round of golf, i'll tell you how long the weather will stick around. >> 6:10. the white house says two americans were killed in a suicide bombing in turkey. they were among five people killed and dozens more injured in the attack yesterday. we checked overnight and their identities have not been released. there has been no immediate claim of responsibility. this is the sixth suicide bombing in turkey in the past year.

jerks convinced the girl to record herself and share it. that video is online now and investigators say they may not be able to figure out who that stranger was. >> this is a lesson learned. people have to understand technology is getting to the point where some things, we just cannot get to and especially if they are using certain type of internet access. >> the sheriff's office said the girl is doing okay. her parents came forward and contacted law enforcement after they found it's on the phone. >> at only surviving suspects accused it deadly paris attacks is starting a legal. he faces charges of terrorist murder and participating in a terrorist organization. this was after he was captured friday during a raid. yesterday he told belgium officials he wanted to blow

on november 13th but he backed out at the last minute. the attorney representing some of the victims hopes he will be back in france to answer to those charges. victims themselves, they want and need, they will ask to have an answer. they have a lot of questions. they killed 130 people during those attacks. france issued more charges to speed up his extradition. some south carolina residents are dealing with a new problem following last october's flooding. they are now dealing with mold. some victims are finding the mold after affects of the storm. they are as troublesome as the flood itself because they have little to know help from fema or their homeowners insurance. we're tracking rain for our area a little later today. >> that is right. the flood threat will stay low

possible and we'll see snow developing in the mountains. could see some accumulating in some of the higher peaks. right now things are quiet. rain passed through last night. it has cleared off starting to hug the coast of the carolinas and then this next system is on its way. you are heading out to church, it is palm sunday. two lanes were closed overnight for several hours. they just reopened around 5:15. we're asking troopers about what led up to this crash and who those victims are. new this morning, republican front-runner donald trump, his manager appeared to grab a protestor by the collar and it was caught on video last night. it shows he reached for the man's collar as a security officer also grabs him from behind. a spokesperson said he was speaking with the protestor when that person was pulled from behind and to his left. sources told cnn the protestor had been asked to leave prior to that altercation. this comes as push back from donald trump continues. elizabeth has the later on the campaign trail. >> reporter: a protestor

you can see the fights happening during a school event on campus. the school said there were two aggravated assaults, one happened inside the gym, the other in the parking lot. this only shows part of what happened. a student was knocked out. >> somebody got real beat up real bad with chairs and stuff. they got injured real bad and i think it is real sad it happened to him. >> it is not clear yet what caused all of this chaos but police had to close down four streets to control the crowd. university officials did not go on a lockdown and nor an ear merle sy alert because the was contained. they are trying to identify the suspects involved. 6:44 right now. new this morning, some local clerks helped police catch a woman running a scam. they said betsy joseph had different sets of

she was using credit cards from egypt in a scam involving online payment systems and phone apps. police say she did this in york, rock hill and pineville. she is on probation in the state from a 2015 conviction. police say at least two men who have not been caught are also allegedly a part of the scam. new this morning, the high school teacher who resigned after a student shared photos, naked photos of her, is suing the district. we told you authorities in union county say that teen got ahold of his teacher's cell phone and posted those online. attorneys for lee ann arthur sued for breach of contract and slander. the student is charged. 17,000 students in new jersey will have to be tested because of lead in the drinking water. they are testing faucets at all public schools in the city of newark.

thousands of children being exposed to toxic water. a teacher alerted the district about discolored water and further testing revealed the lead. i don't want people to get into a crisis thinking there is something like on the scale of flint or that level. it is nowhere near that. alarming lead levels over the past four years in the schools and day scare centers in 42 states including some counties in north and south carolina. this comes days after a panel slammed michigan's governor and the e.p.a. chief for the flint water crisis. governor rick snyder's staff new about the city's problems with water for month before taking action. they switched the city's water source temporarily to water from the flint river in 2014.

right now cmpd is investigating two homicides on opposite sides of the city. >> they could kill innocent child or somebody coming to get their child. it is bad. the drastic measures some neighbors say they may take to keep their family safe. but first we're waking up to temperatures it 40s this morning how warm we're going to get and the timeline for more rain pushing through our area.

vicki graf, you have been tracking the system bringing cooler temperatures our way. >> you'll notice the difference as you head out the door this morning. temperatures running 10 to 15 cooler than it was this time yesterday. charlotte. 40 in salisbury. 37 boone. it is palm sunday today, but it day. cloudy as well. here you can see the temperature difference from this time yesterday so about 16 degrees cooler in charlotte. 16degrees cooler in salisbury. up to ten degrees cooler in the mops. rain pushed through last night, that since cleared out, but another system heading this way. throughout the afternoon, can't rule out a few sprinkles but i'm tracking heavier rain for tonight. i'll break it down to show you when that arrives coming up. thank you vicki. >> you can stay on top of the changing weather conditions
