around 31 to 30. upper 20s in morganton through lenoir. in the high country, no warnings in effect. instead, snowfall out there. the snow continues across the appalachians. as we watch it on the camera networks. this is king street, boone right now, you can see the flakes coming down. a very heavy rain. we've been watching that up by grandfather mountain as well. the northern foothills, i think the charlotte area will be dealing with this over time tonight. showers in taylorsville, down in through hickory, into cleveland county. we'll map this out over the next hour, salisbury will be in effect by 7:00. it looks like for the charlotte area, around 6:45, after that moves on, that's when the cold air really settles in. i'll be pinpointing when we can warm things up when i come back. you can use the wsoc-tv weather app to track the temperature in your

and he'll take in the baseball game between the tampa bay rays and the cuban national team. if that's not enough, the rolling stones will play a free concert on friday. 1million cubans are expected to show up. charlotte may soon get a direct flight to cuba after american airlines applied to get a daily flight to havana. it's just one of 14 new flights the airline applied for. most of the others would go out of miami. channel 9 would be following the president's historic trip throughout the week. find details on wsoctv.com. troopers say a wrong-way driver is to blame for a deadly wreck on i-485 early this morning. the crash happened around 2:00 a.m on the outer loop near providence road. investigators say the wrong-way driver, louise was killed. the driver of the other car going the right way was also killed. the victim's name has not been released. north carolina has seen a rise

in a ride along in december, troopers told us they're up 34%. many cases involved alcohol. two gunmen are still on the run tonight after two separate homicides just this weekend. in west charlotte, police say jacory davis was found shot to death on donald ross road. investigators don't think it was random. the shooting scene was right next to a ymca where families were visiting all day long. yesterday morning in east charlotte, jeffrey johnson was found with multiple gunshot wounds off central avenue. the two cases bring the homicide count to eight now. the recent spike in violence has the police chief asking for chief kerr putney wants the city to approve funding for 125 additional police officers. request. a warning from cmpd tonight, a man arrested for attempted murder is still on

police say christopher cut off his ankle monitor yesterday. he was ordered to wear it in 2014 as a condition of his release ahead of his trial. he faces several charges, including attempted first- degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. officers say he was in the university city boulevard area when he cut the monitor off. tonight officials say an indiana sheriff's deputy is dead and another injured after a shoot out this morning. authorities say 27-year-old carl and 35-year-old jordan buckly went to a home to serve a warrant for drug paraphernalia. when no one answered the door, they walked in and officials say someone started shooting. both returned fire, but they had all ready been hit. he had been with the department for two years, he did not survive. >> deputy carl was one of our family. these people standing with me, they are his family. >> swat teams entered the house

sergeant buckly remains in the hospital tonight. state police are investigating. the greenville police officer who was shot and killed in the line of duty this past friday will be laid to rest this week. police say 28-year-old officer allen jacobs was fatally shot by a self proclaimed gang member during questioning about a gun purchase at the time. police say the suspect later shot and killed himself. last night the greenville community held a vigil for officer jacobs. many turned his patrol car you see there into a shrine leaving behind flowers and other tributes. jacobs was a decorated war veteran, married with two children and with a third on the way. he will be laid to rest thursday. happening tomorrow, cornelius police will honor four officers who were involved in a shoot out with a suspect. police say last may a teenager shot an officer when crews

on coachman easters are, the officer shot will be honored along with the officers who responded and went above and beyond the call of duty. leaders of the state house hope to head back to raleigh to respond to charlotte's non- discrimination ordinance. that ordinance is set to take effect in less than two weeks preventing businesses in charlotte from discriminating against customers based on their sexual preference or identity. the controversy is over a part of the law that allows people who are trans gender to use public bathrooms based on the gender they identify with. after protesting in charlotte friday, the keep nc safe, coalition plans to head to raleigh tomorrow to push governor pat mccrory and lawmakers to hold a special session and take immediate action on the ordinance. on friday, house speaker tim moore told channel 9 republican legislators are all ready working on a bill to reverse charlotte's ordinance.

student: targetingstudents. new at 6:00. the union county board of education will hold a special meeting tomorrow to talk about the search process for a new superintendent at the u.s.p.s. professional development center in monroe. dr. marry reellis has been the union county superintendent for the last four years. dr. mike web, the deputy superintendent for instructional technology and operations also announced his retirement. their last day is june 1st. their retirements come after the sbi and district attorney were investigating a case involving a company and a school laptop contract. eyewitness news discoveved back in november that ellis, web, and another district administrator have a company called educatrix they employed an executive from lenovo and lenovo sold thousands of laptops to the district.

student was hit and killed. investigators say the 16- year-old and her boyfriend were standing in the middle of an intersection around 1:00 yesterday morning when a car hit them. today eyewitness news reporter alexa ashwell -- the orange paint marks where troopers say the couple stopped and got out of the car. they believe a driver driving in this direction didn't see them standing in the road. the couple was hit. and the teen killed. orange paint at this intersection shows a terrible chain of events. troopers believe it started with an argument between a boyfriend and girlfriend. >> it's tragic, 16 years old, in a relationship, died in the middle of the road. >> kenneth moore arrived to the scene early saturday morning. the couple's car was found stopped at the stop sign. both doors open, the car was running. lying in the road was a student at shelby high school. and her boyfriend.

the next two nights we have to watch carefully for the threat of freezing temperatures, close to and in charlotte. especially by tuesday morning for center city. these are the numbers right now. it's unbelievavae. day one of spring. we've never been in the 40s in the afternoon time. all march long and now we get there and stay there. it's 45 in albemarle. cloudy skies. light north winds over rock hill. 47. 48 in lincolnton. 45 in hickory. in the mountains we've been flirting with freezing all day. a cloudy and dreary look through most of the day with snowfall in the high country. it's unbelievable. boone, still heavy snow flakes, i just tweeted out that picture from downtown king street and up in through jefferson and ash county. still some snow showers as you go beyond the slopes and in the northern foothills, it turns to just rain. showers right now over in taylorsville and stoney point. lenoir and saw mills. hickory, star town, mountain

and now it's starting to get into vail. up into cherryville. and shelby, the showers are continuing. and this gets into gastonia between now and 6:40. it times out into charlotte at 6:45 or so. if you have plans tonight, account for wet weather as this line of showers moves through. that will be out of here at 10:00 or 11:00. and the showers will be clearing out. we'll be back to bright weather tomorrow. but the cold air will be coming in at that time. and even with sunshine tomorrow, it's going to be a tough night as far as the temperatures go. the clouds help us out at least initially by hanging around until 7:00 in the morning or so, we avoid the freezing mark for the first round. it'll be 33 tomorrow morning. other areas, not so much, bring in the plants for those who live in statesville and harmony, taylorsville as well. and up in through lenoir as the temperatures hit 32, maybe for

the tar heels responded with an 8-0 run. the senior bryce johnson too quick for the defense. johnson led the tar heels with 21 points, 10 rebounds. carolina shot 61% in the second half out scoring the fliers. carolina advances to the sweet 16 for a 27th time thanks to an 85-66 win over providence. >> in the second half, they scored the first six points of the half and then we were really good. i thought bryce scoring inside and rebounding, blocked some shots. i know he didn't have eight. he only had two today. but i thought he was effected. >> the team did a good job of rotating. and everything coach tells us and teaches us. today we forced him in the one shot and got out on transition

the hue sheers beat kentucky. bryant scored 16 of 19 points. the first time indiana will play in the sweet 16 since 2012. the duke blue devils will play the winner of top seed oregon and saint josephs on thursday. duke had five made three- pointers. brandon ingram had a 25 point effort. it's the 25th time in school history duke will play in the sweet 16. coach k says his amount of respect is through the roof for this young crew. >> i've coached more ncaa games than anybody. and i tell you what, i don't know if you -- you probably shouldn't watch me very much, but if you did, you'd see a very excited and emotional coach. >> the charlotte hornets may see their losing streak hit three straight games at home.
