animal rights groups say they are just glad they got justice for pirate the cat. and this stretch of a well traveled virginia beach road can be a bumpy ride. but now some relief is here to make your commute a little smoother. and time is running out to cast your ballot. newschannel three is live for super tuesday bringing you all the latest as candidates make the final push for the presidential nomination. good evening and welcome to newschannel three at six. i m beverly kidd. and i m kurt williams. voters in virginia have less than an hour left to cast their ballots before the polls close for super tuesday. today could have the potential to decide who will be the nominee for each party. donald trump and hillary clinton are forecasted to come out on top -- according to a recent poll by c-n-u. there s still time to cast your ballot -- polls close at seven p-m tonight. and some voters in virginia beach are being asked to sign a petition when they head to the polls today. its an attempt to get the issue of light rail on the november ballot. newschannel 3s erica greenway is live in virginia beach with more. volunteers are set up at about

across the city. this poll - at college park elementary - is one of them. the group is trying to collect enough signatures from voters to put the issue of light rail on the november ballot. they want to ask the question - funds to extend light rail from norfolk to town center in virginia beach. the group behind the petition - it. they say either way - the want the decision to be up to citizens. not everyone wants to see it on the ballot, though. a spokesperson with a group in favor of light rail says theres still not enough information to be

at this location - the volunteer the petition he had to go make more copies. theyre aiming for 25-thousand signatures, but say they only (need around sixteen-thousand and are confident theyll get enough. congressman scott rigell has written an open letter to republicans asking them to vote trump. rigell called trump a bully and said he was unworthy of the republican nomination to run for president. rigell said he s convinced that if donald trump became the nominee the harm to the republican party would be quote "catastrophic." newschannel 3s margaret kavanagh is live tonight outside of the chrysler museum where polls are still open for super tuesday. margaret what are voters telling you. ad lib -- the ones weve been talking to are just getting off work. they call today important -

a sailor pleads no contest to strangling a cat named pirate -- to death. he now faces up to 5 years in jail because of it. and volunteers with the norfolk s-p-c-a say they finally got justice for pirate. newschannel 3 s nadeen yanes has the story from both inside and outside of the courtroom today. 9:41 pirate didnt have a voice no animals have a voice we have to speak for them norfolk spca volunteer joan terry -- speaking up before breaking down. nats terry crying after she says today -- there was finally justice for pirate. 8:53 it

promised him we would get him justice the black and white cat -- tortured to death by cody gerarden. the sailor found guilty of felony animal cruelty today. pleading no contest to a judge in court -- not admitting guilt -- but his admitting there was enough evidence against him. 10:33 saying i )m not guilty in his pretrial he said that the worked on a farm and he put animals down before and he didnt think it was cruel what he did to pirate - yeah it was like can we kill you like that? we can return the favor 24:13 so with this guilty conviction we were able to get access to that evidence that the commonwealth had against gerarden -- evidence like this written interview gerarden had with animal control where he confessed to strangling pirate saying with the cord he just quote pulled it tight took about 5-10 seconds we were able to get other evidence like these pictures -- some too graphic to show -- of pirate after he died. and the rope gerarden used to strangling him -- while his roommate -- justin page -- allegedly held him down. page is awaiting his trial -- t until then -- through their tears -- these folks -- feel like they finally got justice r pirate. :19 do you feel like pirate t justice today though? yes e step we got another one to next trial but yeah i think did im proud that he got it

the murder trial for a former portsmouth police officer will be moved to july. the trial for stephen rankin was originally scheduled for august. officials say the date change is due to witness availability. back in april of last year -- rankin shot and killed 18-year-old william chapman in a walmart parking lot. police say they were called to the walmart about a suspected shoplifter. chapman and rankin got into a confrontation and that )s when rankin shot chapman. right now - virginia beach police are investigating a deadly crash involving an e-m-s vehicle. officials tell newschannel three -- 88-year- old doris baxter - a passenger

injuries. we )re told 31- year-old brigade chief jeffrey brennaman - was driving the e-m-s vehicle when he hit the car around nine this morning. the crash happened at lynnhaven parkway and north mall drive. the driver of the car - was hurt - but is expected to be okay. police tell us - brennaman has since been placed on administrative duties. virginia beach police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them. rough roads can be a pain on your car and even your bank account. now one of the big trouble spots in virginia beach has gotten a temporary fix. we )ll tell you where -- next at-p&six. and after months of sitting on the launch pad another wallops

and we have liftoff from wallops island! the terrier improved malemute rocket took off from the flight facility on the eastern shore this morning. its payload includes projects from west virginia university -- morgantown. the launch was scheduled for december but delayed several times because of the weather. first comes the frigid winter temperatures -- then comes potholes. newschannel three s les smith is live with more on one road finally getting some relief.

who have to deal with a bumpy ride along witchduck road in virginia beach. the city has officially repaved the road ahead of a larger public works project. the road took a beating during (last winter s storms. the majority of the potholes are near the interstate. officials say the road needed to be paved temporarily between the two ramps where the overpass crosses. an official with the department of public works says drivers couldn )t wait any longer. work for complete rebuild of witchduck road are expected to start in august. those repairs will likely take two years, and newschannel three will have all the updates. live in the studio les smith. newschannel three. service members and their families will now be required to submit a new form with their taxes this year. the 10-95-c proves service personnel are coveunder

navy sailors in virginia beach are hoping to become sailor of the year. here ahoto p traeming at the mount trashmore y-m- c-a. they will compete for sailor of the year until friday. participate in boards and leadership events. the winner of each sea and shore command will compete in the u-s fleet forces competition. a lot of excitement today in chesapeake as hundreds came out to celebrate the grand ening of the new krispy kreme on battlefield boulevard. the line was wrapped around the building all night and morning --by people hopeful they would be one of the first 100 customers to get free donuts for a year! some like larry ressler were camped outside since friday afternoon! he will get a dozen donuts every week for the next year. the >w other 99 people to make it in after larry will actually get a free dozen every month for the
