welcome back. when it it comes to paying for college there is a lot to learn. i know all of the experts seem to agree it's never too early to start saving and start planning. >> that is for sure. kara kaiser is the managing director of bmoar bank and here with how parents and grandparents can play is smart to plan f theor college education. it's a big ticke item. >> it is. right, but itoesn't have to be stressful. we can talk throu that. we can make it easier. >> and probably the important thing for people know is no matter what stage you are at in terms of wre your kids are ing to college start now there is always something you can do to improve the picture. >> that's right. there in your opinion, how early should parents start saving for
9:36 am
the last 30 years you can'tover start too early. if you can afford it the earlier the better. every little bit helps. especially at early as. so think about that young child, the amount of money you can save before they even hit first grade, with a modest rate of return on that money, that mon can almost double by the time they are ready to go to college. that is powerfu >> so what are you talking about here how do you get bang for your buck if you want to start saving especially for young couples with a newborn baby, money can be tight. >> uh-huh. >> instead of investing in a savings account or cd encourage parents to lk at 529 colge vings plan. you transfer i moneyo the account and like a 401(k),r an ira are built for retirement funding the 529 is built for college funding. you invest the funds probably a little bit more aggressively for
9:37 am
you reducehe risk as they get older, and then when that child is ready to go to college, all of the earnings all of that growth everything that money has earned you can take that out tax free, when you use that money for college expenses for education expenses. the other thing you use it on books or a compute tuition, books, room and board all of that fits into the bucket for education expenses. >> very often it is transferable right? if you have money invested maybe you haveore tha can use it for another. your one kid gets full ride scholarship, you don't have to pay for anything. >> y have flexibility. you ca change the beniciary. ybe you do get that unexpected scholarship you don't need all of that money. you can transfer to another child and use that for education expenses. >> okay that's good. grandparents too you mentioned in there. they can also do they invisit in invest inthe same one or open tn 529? >> absolutely. grandparents can take advantage
9:38 am
you can get a state income tax deduction if you use the wisconsin ed vest 529 account. parents and grandparents can both get the income detox. you get the deduction and a tax free withdrawal when you use it for those things. i have young kids got a lot of stuff around your house. toys everything else. this is the part where kids cover your ears right. grandparents, that next birthday instead of buying them a toy, maybe their future by opening or contributing to a 529 account. all of these benefits you can start to provide and invest in their future. >> they are going to think you are boring then, but will thank you later big time. >> isn't that true. >> one of the biggest questions in terms of allocation for parents they wonder should i be saving for college or be doing more to invest in my own retirement. >> a tug-of-war where do i put it? so what i usually tell people is
9:39 am
retirement, you're kind of out of luck. you're not going to have money drop out of the sky later on. your college student can borrow money. they can use their future income to pay that down over time. if you don't save for your retiou're not going to be able to brow it when you don't have any income. >> uh-huh. >> aouple things as i look at priorities. if you have an employer that has a retirement plan where they will match your funds a number one place. it's free money. so and really it's 1 thathe first place. >> to the max? >> to the max of what they will h. 100%. >> okay. >> secdly i ask families to take a look at if they have debt, particularly on credit cards those interest rates can right?th of in the double-digits so work toward paying that down because you can borrow with the home equity loan or student loans at a much lower rate of interest. you have heard me say this before wn i have been on your show in the past i'm very
9:40 am
a financial plan. that's what is going to give people confidence and clarity about their financial future. advisor will get to know you, your family, what is important to you. you can make sure the funds you have got are allocated properly so you have enough in retirement and then you know at what level you will be able to support your children with education expenses. >> i think it's important to work with somebody that knows a little more. what advice do you have starting school this fall? >> two pies of advice. first for parents it's important to realize when your young adult turns age 18 even though you're the parent you can no longer make medal or financial decisions for them. that's a big change from what has happened their whole life. it's important to just plan ahead for that. let's use an example. your child is at hom or off to school, they get sick or injured a parent is not going to be able to call and get information from that doctor or that hospital,
9:41 am
make those decisions on their own, not going to be able to makehem for you. it's a daunting thought when you think about it. >> get your legal documents in der. >> get your legal documents in place. absolutely. in that case it would be a healthcare power of attorney. a local attorney could set that up or talk with your healthcare provider about options. >> here's where you can learn more and make sure you're in the safe, bmo private bank.com/u.s. for morormaenfon or to meet with an advisor and get yourself set up. here. great information. still ahead on the show today why some say custard is even better than ice cream. up next the summer has been a train on the strength of -- strain on the strength of our city.
9:44 am
every year catholic charities help over 36,000 people through their diverse range of programs and now they are running a special campaign to share some of the many success stories. it's called your story mke. the main goal is to help families of all faiths in southeastern wisconsin become empowered to reach their full potential. i'm sheer with sarah chidester, jessica st. martin-trejo, and david belman from catholic jessica bell from catholic charities of milwaukee.
9:45 am
>> in light of erything in the news that is negative to share some positive stories that are going on with our neibors next door is so important. that's what you guys are setting out to do right? >> exactly. >> talk a little bit about how many people receive assistance from catholic charities we kind eofav big number there. what exactly are they receiving and why is that so important? >> sure. well we really offer a range of programs and services at catholic charities. we have nine programs and services ranging from in home suppfo pregnant or have a young child at home all the way to the adult day center. so last year in 2015, we reached 36,000 people through all of those differt programs and services. >> i mean the numbers speak for themselves. it's a huge number. i think a lot of people when they think of catholic charities they think do you have to be catholic to receive this service? >> that is a misconception people have. we serve people of all different faiths and backgrounds through our programs. >> is the goal to continue
9:46 am
to do these things on their own? >> yeah so the campaign really has two goals one is just to raise awareness about the services we do provide and the other is to raise funds so we can continue to provide services for those in need. >> i love the idea of sharing these positive stories. let's do some of that. let's talk first a little bit about jasmine and jeremiah. >> jasmine and jeremiah. i have been working with jasmine since she was first pregnant. so, i helped her through getting to doctors about pregnancy, the stress that came with it. you know making sure that she knew how to be the best mom she could be and then, ming sure that we knew how to get her involved in different community resources. so making sure she had a pack and play and a safe place for him to sleep and making sure she knew all about important stuff about parenting. >> does she have a similar story to other people who come to you
9:47 am
where to go or what to do. >> most of our clients come not knowing what to do. it's an unplanned pregnancy and they are nervous and scared and just trying to figure out all of the resources and how do you get to the doctor and what does my child need all of that. so, yeah, that's most of our clients. >> i think that's so important. you're a case worker you work with a lot of different people. how many people do you usually end up working with. >> at a time usually about 250. >> that's a lot >> that's a lot of people how involved do you get. i would think it would be hard not to get super involved emotionally. >> you see them through some of their best times and also their worst times. we try not to take it home at night, but you get involved and you go to their home, but also you get to see all of their success and you get to see the child's success. and how excited they are when they can share my child started walking or, you know it's their first birthday i walk in the
9:48 am
