9:00 am
good morning everybody why a single mother of two decided it was time to change careers. a new makeup stick getting rave reviews. and a magician with wisconsin routes roots is takia morning blend. ? ? [ music ] ? ? ? ? that's some soothing songs. >> sure is. >> little billy holiday. i like that. going have a live performance
9:01 am
what we just teased is a little different. we got ahead of ourselves we're reading a script from another day's show. we're excited about today's show. we're going to have food fresh from the farm that will be delivered right to your grocery store so you can put it on the table. we're going to talk about lady holiday. we're going to talk about that and have a live performance which is exciting. i wanted to share with you a new book i got it on amazon.com. a lot of people you and i were talking about this squeaking the last little bit of summer. >> if you can get one more little something in we're trying to do it before school starts. >> a lot of people taking short vacations. >> labor day which is coming up or if you can getaway for a little bit. this is a really big book by the new york times. it is 36 hours to u.s.a. and canada. i'm not selling this book i know
9:02 am
>> oh, look at all of the maps. >> up here are tabs with little ribbons so you can mark a page. >> so you found this online searching for books this is what to do with 36 hours in any city? >> exactly. >> so what i did was i tabbed milwaukee to give you an example. not surprising with milwaukee there is a beer mug. [laughter] > >> but it kind of gives you a step by step guide if you have 36 hours and it sort your time and where you should go. with milwaukee just as an example so people understand, it is supposed to highlight the best the city has to offer and stick to its roots. it talks about getting your picture taken with the bronze fonz. a gat place for cheese and brats and beer. it has a stop in hog heaven so you visit the harley davidson museum. >> it sounds like friday and saturday is in there?
9:03 am
to the third ward and shop. it talks with about your afternoon tea somewhere. >> that is so cool. >> and a visit to the milwaukee art museum. it's a fun book. if you're trying to squeeze a little vacation in by car -- >> 36 hours you found it on amazon. >> i'm going to get that as a gift for some people. >> that is really cool. it would make a good teacher gift. natural remedies this is kind of something i got sick on my way home from paris one of the girls was sick and inded up getting what she got. remedies. actually before when i was starting to get bronchitis i have done this chew the raw garlic i have done this, but it is disgusting. it has natural reco remedies ane of them is for bronchitis or sign use sights that a lot of people get with allergies towards the end of summer. i thought this was interesting it is easy to do. anybody can do it. if you are starting to get sick
9:04 am
get more sick or to get bronchitis is to hum. have you heard that before? >> never. >> that is better than mucinex. most sinus infections happen because there is poor movement. if you hum it are get it moving and stop it from getting into bronchitis. >> it doesn't have to be pitch perfect right? >> no it does not. you got to move it around. the other one i thought was interesting they say inflammation which can lead to heart disease and cancer, there is a simple thing you can do and eat that's just grapes. th >> do you drink red wine too? >> you can. >> this is all of the stuff o the grapes i do this and it's just a teaspoon of it. it's really thick. et cit's actuay this color.
9:05 am
merlot. it is supposed to help you with inflammation. it tastes like concentrated grape. >> where can you get that? >> i got this at -- >> like a health food store? >> yeah i got this at metro market. pretty cool. >> i like that. >> no preservative nothing in it you got to refrigerate it, but interesting. >> we have a soundoff for you today we were going to chat about a friend of yours who got in trouble at the grocery do you eat while you grocery shop? we're going to have a little bit of time later in the show you got to hear tiff's story about a friend who took a little bite of something at a grocery store and got in big trouble. >> yup. >> got booked. >> yeah. [laughter] >> we'll talk about that a little later in the show. wisconsin has a long tradition of canning food, but as many of us know fresh is best when it comes to taste and nutrition. >> that's why our next guest has
9:06 am
veggies to your grocery store straight from the wisconsin farmers. tatiana castellino is a registered dietician and manager of quality assurance for pick n' save. >> hi ladies nice to see you thanks for having us. >> you have a lot of fresh stuff out here. >> yes we do every day. >> i have talked to you before in the pick n' save stores and metro market. what is interesting is how your partnership works with local rmers and how farm foods to the marketplace. >> pick n' save is the largest buyer of wisconsin produce in the state. we source our local produce from over 100 wisconsin farmers. when you go into any of our farms you will know that your produce is coming from right down the street. >> i think that is wonderful. you have an awesome partnership with the wisconsin food hub cooperative. i want to talk about what a typical day looks like for the people who supply this food to you. my understanding is they will
9:07 am
this fresh produce to your stores. >> absolutely. they work very lard. and with that result, we can get some of that produce into our stores same day. same day harvest then it gets to us and the customer can come in and purchase it. >> why do you think it is so important to our state to have this food hub partnership? >> local economy is so important. we want to keep our farmers here and they work so hard and we want to give back to them by purchasing their products. there is keep in mind that once a product is harvested it can start to lose some of its nutritional value the vitamin c or iron or any of those vitamins that are in it. the soon sooner it can get to te store and to our bodies the more nutritional value. >> let's talk about what you have out here. cucumbers, zucchini. >> yes some zucchini, yellow squash and i'm sure you probably
9:08 am
not everyone does. something you can do that is really cool is take your vegetable peeler and do this to create a wide noodle. if you want you can slice it down to create like a spaghetti size and keep doing it and you will build in more vegetables and a lot more color onto the plate. >> i always have wanted to try it. everyone who has done it has said it is really good to subout the vegetables f obviously is so healthy. >> right half of our plate needs to be fruits and vegetables. this is a great way to build in more veggies and it just blends in with other noodles. >> that's what i got for my birthday was a spirallizer from our executive producer. you feel like you are eating so much health area and i think the taste is better a lot of people don't realize the noodles aren't in their dish.
9:09 am
like i don't know how to prep that. >> super simple. if you have ever done a baked potato a beet is the same way. you cut it off the stem or purchase them without. you put them into aluminum foil just like a baked potato you roast. depending on how large it is you do it longer or shorter. >> do you put anything ton? >> you don't have to put anything on it. take it out the paper towel the it into some salad, local goat cheese scrumptious. >> i love arugula it has that peppery flavor. >> what else do you have for us? >> a different take on ants on a log. instead of just doing peanut butter with ray zins we hav come up two different ideas. one is different types of nut butter.
9:10 am
any kind of dried fruit just a fun taste. >> even dried bananas. >> that would be delicious. >> yeah. [laughter] >> for a savory take we have done cream cheese with a variety of nuts. if you liked chopped almonds or cashews throw those on top. >> anytime you stuff a green pepper i'm in. these look almost more appetizery what are these? >> instead of doing a stuffed bell pepper take for your football parties right arou the corner. you just hole hollow it out anf with your favorite dip whether it is spinach artichoke or rotisserie chicken. >> then you can slice up the peppers after you have had the dip out of them and eat those too. wonderful. i love the turn around you have with getting the fresh fruits and veggies to the grocery store. in terms of shopping
9:11 am
really important to pick n' save especially it's the largest consumer as a grocery store of local produce. >> well pick n' save is a wisconsin company. you know this is where we were born and bred. we want to support our local farmers and our local economy by keeping it all in state or at least very close because, we're all wisconsinites. when it comes down to it we really just want to follow that. >> i love that. i have been so improssed every y time i have met you work with or go over it with you. here's where you can find out more about the effort for locally grown with pick n' save, pick n' save.com/locally grown. hash tag my pick n' save. with more ideas or find out what they are doing in our community to get that home grown to your table. >> love learning how to roast beets thank you so much. we have a whole lot more coming up including the latest

welcome back. the production lady day at emerson's bar and grill captures one of the last performances in the life of jazz and blues fee bluesphenom billie holiday. we're thrilled to welcome alexis rogers to the morning blend. she'll be reprizing her award winning role as billie holiday hamid-royal. he is all set to go over there. great to meet you. >> thanks for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> what a wonderful show. are you excited ? >> i'm very excited. >> a lot of shows each week. >> 8 shows a week. >> crazy. >> indeed. >> what do you love about this music? >> billie holiday always said she couldn't sing anything that was just novelty she always had to sing things that meant
9:16 am
her voice you know it is coming from a real place it is coming from somewhere deep inside it just makes you feel what it is she is trying to convey through this music. >> uh-huh. >> i really appreciate that. yeah. >> what is the show about. it captures one of her last performances? >> set in philadelphia in march of '59 and as you may know, she passed in july of '59. this is like one of the last counts of her performing and the show takes place at emerson's bar and grill a little run down tavern she was singing in and it's a bunch of stories of billie holiday's life and her music. >> is there any story you like in particular that is particularly gripping that really is meaningful to you? >> she tells a story about being a discriminated against when she
9:17 am
and, the account of it is hilarious. she tells it in such a way you almost don't even realize that there is this tension there, but it's there. it's just so funny. so, it's a story about a lady that gave her a little fever when she went into a restaurant there. she was not allowed in arty anywhere she was made to feel as if she was a queen. if she couldn't go in the front door they didn't go in the front door. if she couldn't sit in the kitchen they didn't sit in the kitchen. she really appreciated how kind arty shaw was to her and also talked about in the show as well. >> neat to have behind the scenes stories some of those personal moments of her life. you won an award for portraying her before the jefferson award a huge honor for you.
9:18 am
portraying her? why do you think you embody her so well when on the stage? >> i think we're alike. what i take from billie she didn't take any stuff from anybody. she was strong, she was confident she was very loving, anything i have read from her friends and people who knew her said her heart was huge and that she loved, loved, loved. people loved to be around her. i think i'm like that a little bit. people like to hang with me know and then, i do, i most certainly care what people think and feel, but i am strong, very strong willed minded you know and people are like don't mess with her. [laughter] >> i feel like billie had a little don't mess with her on her too. >> i like the spunk too. do you have a favorite song in the show to perform? >> you know what, it is all so good. >> i know it would be hard to
9:19 am
foot and it's actually, she really -- >> like bessie smith. >> she loved bessie smith. so this is billie singing her rendition of a blues song. that's one of my favorites in the show. >> how are the costumes. are they reminiscent of the clothes she wore? >> most several. i'm going to be so glamorous just wait. you just wait. en seeing it right? >> yeah. >> and how about abdul he is a good director does a great job? >> abdul hamid-royal is amazing as the md of the show. he's incredible to hang with. we have known each other forever. we have known each other like two days. the stage director and manager are like what are we going to do with him. they are like we should give him

home building from graywood floors and standout staircases to super big windows that bring the outside in. and as always, kitchens are still a big focus. >> what are other hot home building trends? rachel schwab is with the equitable bank to tell us more. i think it is so fun to start dreaming about this because i guarantee everybody who owns a home or wants to buy a home, has ideas about at least one room they would like to see. >> absolutely. new homes are just so exciting. i love to look at them and talk about them and all that >> it is great time to buy. it's a great time to build. rates are really low. fantastic news. so sustainable green building this seems like it has been in for a while still in. >> it has been in for a while it's going to continue. you're going to see this evolve even more and more. we were talking about using products that are more sustainable, more renewable, looking for more energy efficiency. >> is that why wood floors are so hot? >> i don't know if that is why
9:27 am
resource, but they are so beautiful and natural and so even in cold climates like wisconsin, wood floors are really big. but you mentioned about gray, gray is a really hot color right now that weathered look for floors. matte finishes are on point right now. >> what about stacases what is it specifically that is the trend? >> they are becoming more of a ghlight a fixture when you walk in the house. you see beautifulan stairway and for the average person we're not building a mansion, but you are still highlighting that staircase. beautiful different materials like glass, and metal or just real ornate balancesters or things like that. >> i le that. >> how about, this kind of blurring the lines between the indoors and outdoors how does that happen in trends? >> that has been going on for a little bit more too. are you seeing more and more of that large windows maybe off of
9:28 am
doors, giant french doors or even like garage like doors people are installing garagelike doors so they can literally open up one whole area of the house. >> my neighbor just did a beautiful kitchen and she put in what looked like barn doors on the big wall. >> i love those. >> those are kind of in right now. that's a great way to dress up a room or open up a room, close off a room you don't always want it opened up too much i think is great. kitchen still a huge focus right? >> it's the heart of the home. big focus. what you are seeing now with those kitchens is a little more streamline. kind of a mid-century modern clean lines not real ornate. simple just and clean. >> okay. >> and how about just in terms of building a new home, is this a good time to do that? >> it is. it is. in the milwaukee area has a lot of quality reputable builders and the equitable bank is

welcome back. there are lots of reasons for us to get dark circles under our eyes. not enough sleep, they can make you look tired and older than your age. treat the dark circles is melinda mckenzie. throughout this discussion, we're going to be seeing a realtime lapse video, untouched and it demonstrates how this new produc calledplex plexaderm wor. >> it has taken the country by storm. it pulls moiure to the surface your skin.in while it tightens that's why those bags instead of covering them up we're getting rid of them. >> it' that puffiness as well as the dark circles.
9:35 am
about, a line, a crease, the bags, the puffiness. it pulls the moisture to the surface while it tightens your skin. you put it on oncen the morning and you're good to go. >> how long does it take before you really see the results of it? >> we have ritchie in this video applying the cream. you put a little dab and dab it under your eye. clean dry no prep work which is something i like. men as well as women nothing to think about put your skin. you will feel it working immediately. i like the time lapse it shows the distinction. his struggle is the undereye bags he has the actual physical bag under his eyes. it is frustrating it doesn't matter how much moisturizer or how much makeup they are still there that's the issue. >> yes. >> the great thing when you asked how quickly it works you can feel it working right away. within a minute you can see you see it decrease. >> for sure. we're a minute and ten seconds
9:36 am
exceptionally different from the eye on the right where you still see large bags. >> it's exciting so we tell people like really ten minutes tops is when the full spectrum happens. put it on your eyes, your creases, dry your hair, brush your teeth do what you need to do. give it about ten minutes on clean dry skin. if are you a guy if you don't want to moisturize don't if you are a women go ahead, but make sure you use a moisturizer without oil. we offer a that in addition you don't have to get it, but just to make sure you use the right moisturizer. >> you can put makeup over it? >> yes because who doesn't want to do that. >> i don't want to get rid of my bags and not wear makeup i don't go to my mailbox without makeup. >> it's at the ten minute mark where it is the full impact of what plexaderm does. it is exciting for men and women
9:37 am
and let it do its thing. >> this could go viral all over the country. people have tried so many different things tea bags or ice to get rid of the bags. one thing i think is really important for us to note, this does not involve a doctor visit, this does not involve an injection of any kind. >> it's very exciting brand-new technology they have been working on this for a while. they actually took some of the ingredients from the shell rock, clay from the shell rock and that's how they and that's how it works. pulling up the moisture which is really important. >> that's why youster the rock there. >> that's the big question they get asked what is the distinction between this product and every other product? being able to pull the moisture to the surface while it tightens. that's why the bags go away we're not covering them up. >> here is the cream right here. we'll explain the serum in a moment. >> exactly. exactly. what i really like about it is
9:38 am
doctors no thinking ahead. they have been working on this for quite a while. it's been taking the country by storm because it works. that's why we like that time lapse video. lines, creases, forehead lines anything you want to fill. >> taking a look at the video you can see up to several minutes it isiminished even more so it looks perfectly healthy. >> i know that's the other thing too. because you're pulling the moisture to the skin that's why not everybody needs lotion. i get the lines and creases my skin is so super dry. we want to pull that to the surface. another thing i want to mention about ritchie he is a friendly guy, but we asked him not to smile. we want to see the face the same as before and after. obviously if you smile it changes the effect. we want you to see it like that how that bag has gone away. it's really important we're not covering anything up we're making that go away.
9:39 am
other demonstrations of this product, plexaderm really working and again this guy huge bags and dark circles. >> that's the important thing, every kind of skin no matter what your issue is remember we're doing the same thing at the same time, pulling the moisture, tightening the skin. that's what you want and you want it done in a natural way. that's what is so exciting. >> can you do it o some people have puffy eyelids too. >> anything that is bothering you you want tightened, play around with it see what works for you. for me the lines right here i don't know why they bother me so much they shouldn't because it shows you smile a lot, but that's my thing. >> do that area. >> this is me this is my thing. this is what i worry about. we all have our thing. i didn't like the big indentation on my face and i just wanted it to beter. sof
9:40 am
hyaluronicacid in it. it doesn't have oils in it. >> that's what we're telling people. make sure to put this on clean dry skin. if you choose to use a moisturizer stay way from the oil we don't want it to dilute the effect of what plexaderm is doing. that's why we offer the serum if you aren't sure what you have start it off right. >> special offer i'm going to get to that. this is exciting. tu getting under the eye bags, crows feet, wrinkles, simply disappear from view is truly remarkable. that's exactly what that does. this morning blend special forplexp plexaderm is hapning rt now. 40% off, plus if you buy two, you get the third for absolutely free. call toll free (800)865-8214 or you can go to plexaderm.com.

my moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis made a simple trip to the grocery store anything but simple. so i had an important conversation with my dermatologist about humira. he explained that humira works inside my body to target and help block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to my symptoms. in clinical trials, most adults taking humira were clear or almost clear, and many saw 75% and even 90% clearance in just 4 mohs. humira can lower your ility to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fung infections are common, and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. ask about humira, the #1 prescribed biologic by dermatologists.
