[ music ] ? ? good morning everybody. tiff just said i don't think i have slept in like five days. >> i'm tired today. you know you have one of those days you got to like pound the coffee. >> you got to slam the coffee and hope can you sleep that night. >> what would you like to tell
9:01 am
about is parenting. >> oh, good. >> because you consider yourself the perfect mom. [laughter] >> right. >> as tiffany is always saying what do you say? you're really my kid's mother. >> i tell her kids i'm their real mother. >> so i took a picture of them altogether. >> these are my children. >> whenever we talk about this we can go to this photo. >> look how pretty they are and handsome joseph. my kids look great. >> here's what is funny it seems like i bet have you a have kids and some who don't. >> most do. >> i try to find more that don't just so i have things to do. [laughter] >> because they can get out of the house. >> because they can go out more, but most of my friends do have children. >> interesting survey from red book magazine that said you are always complaining about how tired they are. >> so tired. >> 64% of moms people with kids admit rolling their eye when is a non-mom friend complains about
9:02 am
all of that. 51% of non-momoms however wish m friends would stop griping about how difficult it is raising kids. >> it is true i think it goes both ways. people get annoyed or want what they don't have. you know what i mean. it kind of goes a little bit of both ways. i'm going give you my best tip for parenting advice. >> i love parenting advice from you. >> it comes from momma o. she always left sweet notes that's not it, but made sure the punishmentit the crime. that was, her biggest thing they always did. >> i think that is really important. what i find sometimes too is that kids will accept the punishment if it is appropriate that way. >> and she always bit you up. never cut you down. constructive criticism. >> that is awesome. love momma o. >> yeah she's good. >> before we tell you a sweet story about a rowdy dog and a
9:03 am
>> this is 7-year-old sam along with 2 1/2-year-old jesse from milwaukee. they are getting their back to school hair cuts. i love hair cuts especially little boys at the barbershop. they are getting their hair cuts at this place that grandpa joe's barbershop. jose's. sorry. grandgrandpa jose's barbershop. you guys should switch places real quick as we're we love sharing those. that's a great picture. >> there we go. >> thank you. >> there we go. >> if there is someone in your life you would like to see featured on tv make them our picture of the day by emailing the photo to pictures@themorningblend.com. first up today, after mel miskimen mother passed away she noticed her normally tough guy father was filled with sadness.
9:04 am
time to train their rowdy dog. >> we're happy to welcome mel miskimen, marc cieslik and their dog shaess. he writes about it how a underachieving lab door won our hearts and brought us together. that's a great picture looking all proud. >> thanks for being here you guys. >> thank you. >> how did shamess feel about being on tv do you thi? >> there will be, but i don't know if it is dog food. >> i don't think he is a kale eater. >> he is very well behaved? >> he was once rowdy? >> he is still rowdy. >> yes the other ladies that with in the room with us was very attached to dogs, sat on the floor had shamess get in her lap and she went bonkers.
9:05 am
anita she can smell an animal from a mile away. how did you or your dad, and your dog shames, you came to find yourself field training in the middle of a wisconsin winter? >> it's always winter in wisconsin. so there was no surprise there. but, it was just that we started training with him in the we kept at it every week on wednesdays right dad? >> yes. >> we would go every wednesday so it was sort of like a tuesday's with maury meets marley and me kind of thing. and i really you know did not want to stand out there in the field and the wind and the rain and the muck, but, um, i had to. >> okay. >> in the early days of training shames what was it you wanted him to do and what was your
9:06 am
do remember? i wanted him to vindicate the family. because, -- [laughter] >> vindicate the family. >> vindication because we had this major debacle at the sports show. oh, my god. >> yeah. >> oh, my gosh. what did you want him to be able to do? >> what was your part in the training? >> my first thought was train the trainer. >> uh-huh. >> and then after that we went to the dog. and mary ellen followed my orde shamess stumbled a little bit we had to get him going. after about three, four sessions everything was starting to fall into place. >> does he sit, does he stay, shake now those kinds of things? >> oh, yes. when we go out to the field and we want to train and have him do retrieving, he sits at her side the dumby is thrown way out and maybe another dumby is thrown to another spot, and then she gives the commands and the dog does
9:07 am
>> if only my kids were like that. >> i'm with you there. >> you're a retired cop? >> yes i am. >> did you feel sort of a softer side of your personality sort of awaken after the passing of your wife? >> it was difficult. i knew my wife since i was 14-year-old, and we were very very companionable to each other. and yes it was difficult and i thank mel for bringing me around. >> oh. >> o >> it is. >> and i think this has got to be a really important thing that you wrote. you have written before about your father says a cop's kid, this is a very different style of memoir and writing you have done. how emotional was it for you to be able to write about your father coming around? >> well it was sort of like this thing that just sort of happened. i would come home from training the dog and i would tell my husband all of the things we did and my husband is like boy you know you should write this stuff
9:08 am
so i started to write it down and it was almost like it wrote, the book wrote itself because i was writing it as it was happening. and, it just, it just all, i mean as a writer i never had a writing block with this book. it was like crazy. >> what is the video we just showed. because you know a lot of people will train a beautiful show dog, and a real show, but he was actually disqualified right? what happened. >> this disqualified in. this is a sports show. this was our triumph. [laughter] >> what happened? >> well the first time we got disqualified see they had it on stage and had like a duck blind like a fake duck pond and all of this i'm like he is a labrador. when he got the dumby he took a route, and he went to the duck pond, w went to the truck it tok him like two minutes to get back
9:09 am
and my father and mother were sitting in the stands and he speaks fluent retriever. [laughter] >> he was like oh, hanging his head like walking out like don't look at me. i thought i need vindication. >> that's what i was going to ask in closing. you said what we wanted was vindication for our family. there is something very special you feel shamess has given your family right? >> yeah i think he was intense ca casm of grief. i think if i wouldn't have trained the dog if we wouldn't have gotten outside i think we would have been wallowing in this quagmire. i think he sort of you know, gave us something to live for i think is what i'm saying. >> that's cute. >> will you both be at the book signing coming up? >> yeah. all three of us. >> you got to come out and can
9:10 am
shamess tonight at boswell book company on downer. you can go to our website for further spelling on that or go to mel miskimen.com. >> thanks so much for sharing. >> loved meeting you both. >> thank you so much. >> he is so good. everybody is going to want it take him home. i love it. thanks guys. we have a lot more coming up on today's show. we'll tell you about a nonsurgical treatment to fix that double chin. and cindyri every program under the sun to lose weight none worked until now. how she lost 28 pounds and kept it off. the song found the milwaukee based band dead horses. their music has been compared to bob dylan, but the group isn't afraid to explore lots of other sounds. >> later in the show which national act they are opening up for at the riverside, but now here they are with kicka poo creek.

9:12 am
9:13 am
9:15 am
9:16 am
welcome back to the morning blend. recently several colleges have closed including itt technical institute, anthem college and the art institute. what happens to those displaced students? >> our next guests are with herzing university. they help displaced students transfer and make life easier by weaponing with credits and providing -- by helping with credits and providing help. i love what people think when they meet you how inviting and how comfortable and instantly friendly and welcoming you guys are. do you find people are feeling more comfortable instantly
9:17 am
students. >> we really try to work on that. it's important that students especially now when displaced have that sense of belonging and support they are going to get especially in a transition like this. that's really difficult for them. >> what happens when a school closes because a lot of them haven't completed the degree or whatever program they are enrolled in. it's suddenly like hey what am i going to do to complete this and hoping a lot of their credits transfer. >> i think the initial r >> right. >> and then you know they kind of start doing their research and work through it a little bit. then once they do they usually give us a call and we'll start the process. let's talk about your credits. let's talk about financial aid all of those different things to start lining up the dots make sure it's a good fit and then you know move forward from there. >> uh-huh. >> how about these credits. i would think a lot of credits from a school closing they are not working with you anymore, so can you transfer most of those
9:18 am
the school that's always the case. this situation with itt they are on quarter credits which are different than semester credit so they don't always match up exactly which is why as we're talking to students and counseling them about what to do we're saying look at multiple school when is go through this process. look at community colleges and other private institutions. it does make a difference. you want as many of those to transfer as you can. really take a look at that. >> in terms of numbers i wonder what kind oef handling it all. in the last week or so how many students would you say you helped ? >> we had over 330 students in wisconsin alone affected by the itt closure. and christy i know you have talked to a number of students along the way. >> we have reached out. we've had quite a few reach in we're reaching out to some as well to offer support resources and then we've had quite a few we started the evaluation process with. we've had a couple start school last week already. >> wow. >> yeah.
9:19 am
they can get started right away and not miss out. because time is of the essence i would think to people who are looking to make a career change or trying to build on the experience they already have. >> exactly. they already started they've been in school, they are in the swing you want to keep that habit going so you don't want to slow down. >> what should someone do if they want to transfer their credits and meet with you guys? >> give us a call. it's very simple we'll invite them in for a campus visit and we'll go through the credits. hand as well. department of ed and the wisconsin educational approval board. there they are. >> i'm glad you mentioned that. specifically too, for itt tech students there are hundreds of them it sounds like. so the wisconsin education approval board that's a good website and phenomenon number for them -- phone number for them to know and the department of he education.
9:20 am
another school or apply for a school discharge program which refunds all of their student loans their federal student loans. >> wow. >> the educational approval board really is going to be their alley in -- ally in helping them go through that process so they can submit that information. >> i didn't even know you could do that. >> would some of those students get a refund and reapply for a new school? >> there is a lot of interesting nuances about that. that's why we spend most of our time talking with those stus >> i bet they are so confused. >> they are still in shock about what is happening and have to figure out what to do next. so, we really spend a lot of time just walking them through a number of questions to really get an idea what is the best answer for them. >> there is still time to enroll? >> absolutely. we can work you through the process very quickly. we've got another start date coming up in a couple weeks so yeah. >> that's wonderful. so people just need to give a call and ask for that campus tour and right now i know if people call and mention the
9:21 am
enrollment fee. be sure to mention the morning blend when you call for that campus tour, herzing university brookfield is located on south executive drive in brookfield. (262)649-1710 or herzing.edu/brookfield. >> great that they have a place to go. >> thank you so much. still ahead on the show we'll tell you about a fun event where you can learn about the latest treatments f skin and wrinkles. this woman is about to have another birthday, but she feels better now than ever before. we're going to tell you about a plan that helped her lose

come on... dogs just won't quit. neither does new frontline gold. its triple action formula is relentless at killing fleas and ticks for a full 30 days. good boy! go for the gold. my moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis
9:23 am
so i had an important conversation with my dermatologist about humira. he explained that humira works inside my body to target and help block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to my symptoms. in clinical trials, most adults taking humira were clear or almost clear, and many saw 75% and even 90% clearance in just 4 months. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, d new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. ask about humira, the #1 prescribed biologic by dermatologists.
9:24 am
welcome back. well cindy took her six months to act after seeing the nutrimost on the morning blend program. it seemed too good to be true now she is 28 pounds lighter. we're happy to welcome cindy miller and jen mccommons her health with 855-burn-fat. i love your story which we'll get to more in a little bit. i love the fact that you say you saw it here on the blend it took six months, i think that is a
9:25 am
they are not ready to act yet or they are thinking, i don't know if it will work for me maybe it's just something that is on tv. >> right. >> and you felt that way. >> i did for six months i kept thinking about it. >> how do you feel now? >> oh, i should have done it six months ago. yeah i should have. >> let's get into your story in a minute. i want people to know how the program works. a lot of people see you on the show they think the same thing that cindy thought and they wonder how does it work? is it going to work for me? does it work for everyone is it too good to be true? >> results. you have seen with all of the people we bring on here. most of them volunteer to be on here. we're look at each individual person. the program is individually set and customized for the person that is doing it. so your program would be different than mine, different than cindy's and the goals are different. some people have a goal of losing 20 pounds some people have a goal of losing 100 pounds. we're going to help get you to whatever your goal is.
9:26 am
someone may say i only want to lose ten pounds. another person has a different number. the cutting edge technology how does it work? >> it works by identifying what is going on with your metabolism to act older or sluggish. we look at a metabolic age. if your metabolism is acting like you're 90 and you're 40 you will have a difficult time losing that weight. we have ways to reset that age to get your body working so it can help weight. there is many of us that eat a thousand calories a day and you know you go up two pounds that doesn't make any sense when your best friend can eat 3,000 calories and doesn't gain an ounce or your husband or whatever the case may be. so we are looking at exactly what is your issue and helping you to fix that. >> think it is so valuable and such important information. for you you who did having a health coach and your relationship with jen help you through the process. i think that support system is
9:27 am
said she started back in november, the day before thanksgiving. and went all the way through the holidays that's when i knew if she could do it i could do it. she has been there, then when i went to the office and she talked to me about the program, she was so motivating and just, i knew that i could do it. >> she's always like this isn't she? >> she is always like this yes. >> it's very true. you wanted to be slimmer by summer so you had a goal and time frame set >> yes. >> what was so important about summer for you? >> i wanted to be able to do things with my children. i wanted to get back into my clothes. i wanted to go water skiing. i had that goal. going to my nephew's cottage i was going to go water skiing with my children and i did. 57 almost 58-years-old and i got up on those skis. that was very exciting. >> that's huge. you lost 28 pounds and think you know for you jen there is like a
9:28 am
to lose it. >> we guarantee we'll work with you to get to the 20 pounds. most people hit that easily. we have a couple people that have more trouble. we don't give up on you. we are going to keep with you and help you to get that. you know when you sign up with us to do the program will you have a minimum of 20 pounds off. >> i think that's incredible. you have tried other weight loss programs before? >> oh, yes just about all of them. this by far was the easiest. the weight just fell off of me. nobody even rli all of the sudden it was gone. >> you lost some serious inches i mean 22 inches. >> 22 inches. >> where do you find when you had to buy new clothes i'm sure you had to buy new clothe where is do you find you lost the most you looked the best that you hasn't seen yourself feel so good in so long. >> the inches came all very equally it was 5, 5, 5, and then a little bit more. , but, i just, i never worn that size of a smaller shirt. i mean my shirts really went
9:29 am
clothes that i have now don't fit me anymore. that's finely give them away. i don't need them. >> wear some short sleeves right. you were biking this summer? >> yes i do love to ride with my friend on his harley and we did a lot of riding. i remember after a certain point he told me he says you know i can really feel the load is lighter back there. [laughter] >> that was pretty funny. >> he doesn't have to lean so much in the turn right? >> exactly. >> and can i get on and off a >> i love it congratulations. you look amazing. i can tell yourself esteem and you're just vibrant. >> i feel wonderful i really do. >> i'm sure you would tell anyone don't wait. >> no don't wait. it was, it was wonderful. it still is. i have kept it off now for it's been over two months, since i hit my goal and it's just, it's just a way of life. it was easy. i know it's hard to believe that's all can i say about it. >> congratulations.

9:35 am
we do rhino plasty. hair restoration. >> one of the things we talked about specifically were injectables botox and fillers. how does somebody know where those should go. how do you know what to do in terms of injectables. a lost people are like i don't know if i need botox i just know i want to look refreshed. >> that's one of make. an example is tybella a product we offer through our medispa. it is an injectable and it takes care of this fat. >> double chin. >> absolutely right under the chin. it essentially is an injection that dissolves the fat away it's permanent. there how many treatments does a person -- wow that is quite a result. that's something a lot of us have and as we age the skin obviously is much looser there. how many treatments would it
9:36 am
results? >> 2 to 4 treatments in studies, but most people have good results after two and some after one. they are spaced out six weeks apart. in the appropriate patient we get a fantastic result as can you see. there are patients who are not great candidates. those are patients with a lot of loose excess skin, banding in the neck. and in those cases it can worsen that appearance. those are patients that might be better candidates for nonsurgical skin tightening or doing a formal neck lift all of those are things we offer at our center. >> so you can help people figure out if this is going to work for them or if they need something more involved ? >> absolutely. and the best thing obviously is to come in and have a full consultation, we see patients usually spend about an hour with them go over all of the treatments, the pros, the cons, the expected results which are important for people to understand and the risks
9:37 am
>> a lot of people are going to say i want to have this done i just don't know if can i afford it, what are you offering that can help people make this a reality? >> we have a really nice new membership program we started. what this offers is a patient pays a one time annual fee of $199, and then with that they are going to get botox for $9 a unit for the whole year which is great price. >> i don't know if i have ever heard it that low. >> three complyman hydrofacial treatments for the skin. they are going to get a complimentary surgical consultation with perform the physicians if interested in cometic surgery that saves them $100 there. then they also get 10% off any other spa treatment we offer. so if they want to try something they may have not been able to before, it's a great way to do it. >> okay so those spa services include a lot of those things that we talked about right? the facials or laser treatments,
9:38 am
right? >> any other kind of injecteddable. filler, laser treatments, hair removal facials anything else we offer. >> we're going to repeat the information so people can understand the spa membership. what it includes for one year people pay a $199 annual spa membership fee what that includes is botox for $9 a unit for the entire year, right so if you have it more than once, just $9 a unit. three complimentary hydrofacials, a comen with one of the physicians and 10% off any spa service for the entire year. >> yup that's it. >> what you need to do is call to register. there is also a lunch and learn all about facial injectables. we talked about botox, fillers, you can find out more about that thursday september 22 from 12:0t the plastic surgery associates.

9:43 am
singing hymns and liturgy i was in a hand bell choir growing up, other choirs as well. >> that is fantastic. did you take guitar lessons. so interesting how many musicians teach themselves. >> i took them for a little bit because hi to. i really didn't like it. i thought i didn't even necessarily like guitar. as soon as i quit i just kept teaching myself how to play and learning songs i like. >> how does the church or growing up in that music still influence what you kind of a message, like, people have called it the dead horse's gospel which isn't religious in any way, but there are certain themes as a song writer that i believe in very very strongly. that i think is conveyed throughout the song. >> how did you three get together to form this trio? >> it was pretty organically actually. just met through friends we were all from the same area. and -- >> and where is home for you?
