3:05 am
here with me is kate coyne, executive editor of "people" magazine, which released the special edition 1976. >> great to see you again. >> it was a great era. >> it was. it sure was. i think great in a way that a lot of people -- you say '70s, and it's like, oh, disco, shag carpet, whatever, but so many great pop culture moments. >> hoda? >> guess who's here, our fan of the week. >> lynette. >> lynnette is here. where are you from? >> ral, >> of course, you are, lynnette. are you ready? here we go. 1976 "rocky" made its writer and star sylvester stallone famous but the studio initially didn't want him on the film. who else was considered? was it burt reynolds, robert de niro or harrison ford? >> harrison ford? >> is she right? >> no. >> so sad. >> wait, no.
3:06 am
>> it was burt reynolds. yeah. even though stallone had written the film he was a total unknown. nobody wanted to buy it if he was going to star. fascinatingly sly stood his ground and said then i'm not selling it. finally two producers said, all right, we'll do it with you, kid. pretty great choice. >> yes. won the academy award for best picture. >> it absolutely did. >> unbelievable. hoda? >> what's your name? >> tina. >> from? >> texas. >> come on, tina from texas, let's play. what were the main characters "charlie's angels"? were they sabrina, jill and kelly, samantha, julie and chris or sofia jennifer and kathy? >> "a," "b" or "c"? >> "a." >> boom! "a." [ cheers and applause ] >> $100. >> america just held its breath when those women came in with the guns. >> they did. the network executives wound
3:07 am
want a lot more money. when she didn't get it she walked. they rewrote the character. so the character of jill was only a one-season wonder for that show. >> cheryl ladd came in. >> cheryl stepped in to play jill's sister kris after that. >> fascinating. >> wt's your name? >> lynn. >> from? >> arkansas! >> i love arkansas. >> all right, lynn. i think we'll be good at this. ready? >> i'm ready. >> in may of 1976 which singer set a new record for the most number one hits by a female vocalist? was it "a," steve nicks, "b," diana ross or "c," barbra streisand. >> "a." >> oh, good news. >> it is actually diana ross. >> the supremes were huge. >> and the solo artist diana ross was queen of the '70s. everything from "touch me in the morning" to "love hangover" to
3:08 am
she had an unbelievable decade. >> yeah, she sure did. >> one more hoda woman. >> dana. >> dana is here from -- >> texas. austin, texas. >> come on, dana. let's play. >> all right. >> what variety show star had the best-selling doll of 1976. was it cr, mar osmond or carol burnett? >> marie osmond. [ buzzer ] >> oh, so -- i mean, yay! >> was that donny and marie's great decade? >> it was a good decade for them but not as good as it was for cher. the answer is cher. the cher doll was a best-seller. i had one that hot pink halter pantsuit. amazing. >> how fun was she to look at? >> incredible. >> she still is. >> she was a real life barbie doll with the long hair, long legs. >> such an original. not that we don't love our marie and our barbra.
3:09 am
>> great to be here. >> a special collectors edition of "people" is on newsstands now. are you drowning in credit card debt? lauren was, too, but got herself afloat and she has great advice for you after this. much, do they? really? i'll take it. sir, your credit... when was the last time you checked? yeah, i'd better check my credit score. here, try credit karma. it's free. all right. no more surprises.
3:12 am
3:13 am
in her new book called "the recovering spender". >> lauren asked you to send out an sos if you needed help in getting back on track. today you are here with answers. this is a good idea. >> i am. i am. we got so many questions. >> let's go with the first one from louanne in morris, illinois. this is her question. what's the best way to pay off credit card debt? >> okay. credit card debt, there is a difference of opinion sometimes when it comes to paying off credit card debt. some people say start with the highest balance first. >> yeah. >> some people say -- or the highest interest rate. some say start with the lowest balance. and in my book i actually show a graph. you can see there is really only a one-month difference if you were to pay off a debt depending which one. but the psychological benefit of paying off the lowest balance first and getting rid of all of these little little credit cards far outweighs -- >> you can chip away at the big one. >> too many cards. >> exactly.
3:14 am
>> how many do you think we should have? >> i think zero. if you do have a credit card, i would say stick with one. >> it's hard to go to the store and they say, do you want to get one for 20% off? and you're like -- >> i hate it when they don't take the one you've got. >> yes, that's true. that's true. >> janet from new york. what does she write? >> i have $10,000 in credit card debt, $58,000 in a home equity loan. i am so lost and scared. i will not share with my family. my husband is not even aware. oh, my. i cannot share this with anyone. so isn't there? >> there is a lot of shame. and that question was very near and dear to my heart because that was me nine years ago. i think the bigger question is why are you spending so much money. >> of course. >> in my book i talked about the psychological things that happen when you're spending money. there is a place in your brain called the insula that doesn't ignite. it is responsible for telling your brain danger, danger, don't do that.
3:15 am
insula is not igniting telling your body no. >> it's a brain thing. >> with her you have to get real with why you are spending money. is it an addiction? it can be like a drug addiction or alcohol addiction so to really address that issue. >> the high from the purchase. >> exactly. >> right. >> physically though right now if she feels buried, what's the first thing? >> she needs to come clean to somebody. whoever it can be. if she sees a financial counselor, a regular counselor, get it out of your body. >> a friend. >> anybody. >> a friend, anybody. then you can start working with, okay, now the next step is to talk to my husband, we need to start getting real with this as a family. >> sounds like she does the finances for the family. >> yeah. >> he's not aware. >> exactly. it is important she talks to somebody. >> what about having a family meeting once a month to go over finances. >> yep, and that's what we do. we call it budget night. we talk about the budget the whole month before it happens. >> here's a question from crystal in north carolina. she says, i have no idea how to
3:16 am
earner. my son is 18 and still studying in school. when he needs something he just goes out and gets it. i have no ideaow to do a budget. we are slowly drowning. and i don't know how to save us. >> how is he getting it without a credit card? >> so, this is the interesting thing about this question is how do i put my husband on a budget. it lhow doou p somebody else on a diet. it doesn't happen. >> especially if he's the sole breadwinner. >> exactly. >> so what they need to do is they have to d values. what are they going to do as a family. that's really, really important. >> like what? what do you mean? >> vacations and -- >> for me, me and my husband have four children. our kids and their college education, that's a value to us. having family together time is a value to us. having financial security is something that's important, a value to us. if you are overspending and spending things that aren't according to those values, get rid of them. because they're not going to help you in your life. >> how is this young boy, 18 years old, able to purchase things --
3:17 am
>> at the doesn't have a job. >> mom and dad gave him a credit card. >> right. >> or he could have applied for one. >> exactly. you can apply for things -- >> that's true. >> without any -- >> yeah. >> i had one. >> my first one was my first week of college. >> i had one in college too. i was like, hmm. they get you. >> it's all great advice. >> terrific. thank you so much. we're proud of you. >> thank you. >> they speak several languages but you only need to understand one. >> the language of love. >> il divo on our stage. >> like never before. >> you will love thi ?? "it's amazing out there" means to me the wonder and the wow of weather. >> everything is amazing. >> it could be the smallest ice crystal, the biggest storm cloud. >> what does "it's amazing out there" mean to me? it means looking up and being inspired, even if it's just straight up blue skies. i mean how beautiful is that,
3:18 am
happens when the sun comes right over the ocean when it comes up in the morning. >> watching lightning streaking across the sky from one side to another. >> the role of thunder, it's just -- it's just one of the most amazing thing. >> that's what "it's amazing out there" is and what it means to you mentally and the memories you take away from that weather and how that absolutely affects our lives, our day-to-day. what's in our stores, what are we going to wear, what are we going to eat, what is everything going to cost? to me all those interactions. the weather has realnf on. that's why "it's amazing out there." >> what it means for me is it lets the world know what's happening at the weather channel. >> i think what makes the weather channel's coverage unique is that we are meteorologists. we know what is going on with the weather and that makes a tremendous difference. >> somebody just walks up to you in the field and says, thanks for being there. we're so glad that you were here to take us through it. >> we have a charge, we have a
