hard to believe thanksgiving is two weeks from today. so let's play a game we call who's at the door. nbc news health and nutrition editor madeleine is here to quiz us on some of the traditional foods someone may be bringing over for the holidays. >> and which is the lower calorie option. >> we're going to have a lot of visitors coming for thanksgiving. when we knock on the door, we're going to see two different dishes and you're going to compete and whoever knows which one has the lowest calories. then you ring it. this is kathie's sound and here's mine, cowbell. >> what that has to do with thanksgiving, i don't know. >> we're ready. >> oh, look, we have aunt sally who has mixed nuts, half a cup, or cheese and calories. >> which one is lower in calories? >> definitely the cheese and crackers. >> you would be right.
3:22 am
>> 400 versus about 300. >> let's see who's up next. >> is that the doorbell? >> oh, there's our neighbor down street genine who's got a dinner roll for us and a piece of cornbread. which one is lower in calories? >> dinner roll. >> you would be right. even though it's a white roll, about 130 calories versus 200 for cornbread. >> cornbread is also dense. >> i love it. >> cut down your portion and you can enjoy everything. no deprivation. >> come in. >> here's davey and he's got some mashed potatoes and he's got mashed butternut squash both made with milk and margarine. which one is going to be lower? >> i'm going to go with the orange dish. what is it, squash? >> butternut squash. the orange dish would be correct. >> i was right. >> 170 calories versus 240. both of them are starches. the butternut squash is less starchy so enjoy them all. you want to trim the calories, cut it in half.
3:23 am
>> not yet. >> does anyone care if i -- i know it's going to be a crappy prize. >> here's lesley with some wine. and some beer. so for five ounce glass of wine, red or white, or 12 ounces of beer, which one is lower? >> beer. >> you would be wrong because there's about 150 in a regular beer and 120 in a glass of wine. >> oh, 30 calories. >> who is it? some bread stuffing and some macaroni. >> looks like my brother. >> red stuffing. vegetables and macaroni and cheese. >> you guess. >> i would say the bread stuffing because the cheese and macaroni and all the pasta. >> macaroni and cheese has about 100 calories less. >> really? >> i still want that. >> in a one cup serving.
