9:35 am
treatment and cure has doubled over the last 50 years which is a wonderful statistic. super impose that by cardiovascular disease which effects one in three people in the united states. that's not uncommon that people who are surviving cancer may wind up having cardiovascular disease. it's more than just a coincidence. there is a real association between the two and there are specific drugs that may in low frequencies cause heart issues, but if whether it is a low frequency, 2 or 3%, for them it's 100%. our program what our program is really designed to do is to maximize the effects of the chemotherapy on the cancer cells and minimize the chemotherapy on the heart and please vessels. >> is it just chemotherapy or is radiation sometimes a risk for having heart problems? >> both and sometimes actually in combination the risk is actually higher.
9:36 am
exemplifies that risk. when karen was in her 20s she had l lymphoma she was cured of the cancer after having radiation therapy and chemotherapy. 20 years later she had a heart condition. they lived 8 years with that issue and she passed away. her husband became concerned that there needs to be more awareness of this issue. he aurora healthcare to set up the center for cardio oncology. >> who should be interested in this program? >> i think all parents who have had chemotherapy and patients at risk of heart disease, those individuals should ask their healthcare providers what is your plan for me? what is your plan for my heart and screening my heart? at our program, what we do is we take patients whether they are about to receive chemotherapy or have received chemotherapy or
9:37 am
those patients in a very programmatic behavior. ultrasounds, blood work, examinations, through their chemotherapy and shortly after. even years after their chemotherapy because some of these effects can occur later on. >> with the heart disease just because i know you said if there is a connection or family history, could it develop if there is no family history? >> i will give you statistics it's an interestingst when we took a look at patients or children who are survivors of cancer and asked the question do they develop cardiovascular disease they are an 8 fold increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease. if you talk about adult who is have survived their cancer and received chemotherapy or radiation therapy they are at 25% increase it doubles with every decade after the age of 60. it's more than just a
9:38 am
it really does need to be followed. >> i'm thinking about people that are watching they are saying i completed cancer treatment, maybe i had radiation or chemotherapy or both or i love somebody who has had one or both. what should they do if they want to understand better their risk or want to be checked. >> the first thing to do is that those with shortness of exist discomfort. seek attention from the primary provider. offer a referral from a cardio vas vascular specialist. more importantly what the program is set up to do in the future is try to prevent that from happening. try to prevent the issues of symptomatic heart disease. if we can start medical therapy before patients become symptomatic we will delay that
9:39 am
happening down the road. >> sounds like you are doing amazing work. >> we have amazing patients. people who are survivors of cancer some of their stories and i shared this with my colleagues and we're all inspired every single day. >> i love that attitude that hey they is survived cancer already been through a lot let's try to do what we can to minimize any other additional problems they might have with their heart as a result. thank you for being here and sharing this information. you have a great websi information. a lot of people have questions after hearing this information. might be new to a lot of people. you can call (414)646-2662 or you can go to this website aurora .org/cardio -- oncology. thank you so much for being here we appreciate it. still ahead celebrity chef shares tips for adding something

welcome back. americans will eat about 46 million turkeys this thanksgiving. >> the trimming. celebrity chef alex guarnaschelli joins us live with a few tricks and tips to add to your holiday menu. good morning chef. >> good morning. >> hi chef alex. let's talk about your number one tip. i want to know right off the about bat how do we make it a memorable holiday meal? >> hmm that's a great question. i'm actually going to say my number one tip is about pies. i feel like pies are a topic that come up every year during
9:51 am
and whatever else as well. it feels like everybody gets a little pie amnesia. they remember how to make it, but the next year comes and they say, how did i do that? so, for a classic pecan pie, i just chop some extra pecans, and sprinkle them over the cooked part shell and mix the whole pecans and filling together, pour it over that and bake it. what happens is that little layer of chopped pecans serves as a ins congratulator between that little extra texture on the crust and it also enriches because it has a little more pecan flavor in the filling and on top when all of the pecans rise and kind ever get brown and candies and crunchy. so good. >> so good. you are making my mouth water it's so true. every single year i forget how to make the pecan pie i have to look it back up. very true. let's talk recipes too. how else do you suggest that we add more flavor, texture

recipes for the season? >> well, one thing i really love is i have a lot of friend who is avoid dairy or they are vegetarian, this nut milk it's just simply made by soaking whole almonds in cold water over night and blending it. you can blend it until it is slightly textured or blend it further and it is smooth. you can whisk that into for example, a thanksgiving gravy, or sauce instead of using butter or flour or cornstarch or something that is definitely less healthy. that's one way i like to hash tag think fisher. this is my 5th year in partnership with fisher nuts. the bag and the nuts are all that it offers no preservetifics non-gmo, another great way to add nuts to savory dishes equal parts lemon juice, olive oil and walnuts and just pulse it up in the blender until it is smooth. you have a great savory dressing
9:53 am
iceberg wedge. you can mix a cob salad, toss it as a first course for thanksgiving as an example or use it to drizzle over your turkey o over a roast chicken or over a pork loin. it's just a great way to add body with nuts nuts instead of h other things like flour or cornstarch and a great way to add full flavor and richness. when i use walnuts this way there is a satisfaction with the dish. feel deprived, i'm not hungry at least for half an hour. but also i just, i feel for the walnut. you know? [laughter] >> the pecan has its pie, you know what i'm saying, but walnuts they are not just for brownies they blog in savory dish -- belong in savory dishes too they need love. >> i think you're right they need reassurance they are valued as well. >> yes.
