stressed out with a lot of people around. the number one pet we keep in our homes is? >> rabbits. >> no i thought it was going to be rabbits too it's dogs then cats. cats are number two. then fish. the most popular if you think of sheer numbers because people don't generally have just one fish they have several swimmers. birds are fourth which surprise me. they beat out even rabbits and hamsters which are tied for 5th place. >> we had a parakeet growing up. >> you >> we had a parakeet, a cat and fish. the parakeet would mimic the cat meow, but the cat made the sound that sounded like one of the kids yelling. my mom wears two hearing aids, whenever the cat would meow it sounded like us yelling mom so my mom would always say what back to the cat then she would wonder what the cat wanted when the bird was chirping because it would meow. >> that's fantastic. >> it was the funniest household
9:03 am
>> that is hilarious. i love it. sometimes you have to have a sense of humor about that hearing thing. >> we would die laughing when my mom would respond to the cat and say what. we were like mom it's the cat. >> it's not us it's the cat. problem, but offering something as a suggestion for improvement. >> holiday prep and d?cor? >> oh, my gosh we have so many holiday stories i love the holidays. we have this beautiful story on how to decorate your holiday table. it's sort of a little bit offbeat it uses a lot of flowers and greenery, and an unusual pallet and it's just gorgeous. we have where to go to shop for handy crafts all of the little fairs around town. we have the best lot of decorations or maybe there is a fireplace. >> oh, fun. >> just so many different things for the holidays. we also have story about a couple who has a christmas free farm and you can go -- christmas tree and you can go and get a shot and kiss under the mistletoe it just sounds great. >> that's atorable. adorable. this is a perfect time of year you make a point this is a great

9:19 am
sweetness from oranges and unsweetened apple sauce. >> do you use the zest as well? >> yes. that adds a lot of flavor. >> that can really brighten it up. >> exactly. just some natural oj cook it down if you need or want you can add some honey to it. as a natural sweetener, but keep in mind this is in the as sweet as your normal. but you are going to get -- >> i like it if it is a little more tart. cranberries are great. >> i love it. and the cranberry and it's not just a sugar bomb. >> and it has texture to it. that's really good i like that better actually. >> really really good. >> thank you. >> that's fantastic. we talked about baking supplies, but you also have pies and people aren't up to baking along with everything else. >> we know how strapped we are for time. something like this cranberry you can make ahead of time the day before. say we're rushing around didn't have time to make the homemade
9:20 am

9:23 am
welcome back everybody. hearing loss is a problem that can effect the whole family and it can make it difficult to be at work and can create issues in relationships. >> that's right most people with hearing loss even significant hearing loss wait 7 years on average before seeking help. dr. gwen kandula is a board certified doctor of audiology with advent.
9:24 am
common problem. good to have you guys here. there thank you. >> this is great let's talk about this. this is a program you have been doing for a while the gift of hearing. i joked during the break you are like the oprah of hearing you are giving the gift of hearing. >> tada. >> yes you are giving me ideas here. [laughter] >> i know. have you to let them hear the first time awooo. [laughter] ago as we first started our practice and we're so lucky we get to see the benefits of better hearing. and we really hoped we could find a way to ship help share tt with more and more people. we know it can be a hard thing with some families especially this time of the year with holidays. we always try to time it here before the holidays so people by christmas time, really would be able to have that first christmas hearing their family better and just having better communication in general.
9:25 am
people can submit either online or write to you we're going to share the information in a second. they just share a little bit about their story and why either they or someone in their lives needs the gift of hearing. >> absolutely. this year on our website we have an icon and it is called gift of hearing it's little gift watched up. if you press on that it will take you to a submission page. it will go through information about you and you could write really your essay or the reasons you wanted to nominate that person. >> i love that. >> taken the first step to get help for themselves it may be difficult as a family member to approach the topic. do you have ways you suggest someone start a conversation with someone that might need to check their hearing or look into something like this? >> yeah you just start gently usually and be nice about it. it's one of those things that takes a long time to build up steam and oftentimes most of the time the folks around the person who has the issue are the ones to know first. and so, you know just because you know first doesn't mean you
9:26 am
it can be frustrating. put yourself in their shoes and think about how you would feel. it's a medical issue. you wouldn't bash somebody because they have heart disease. it's to figure out how we can get things back up and running and figure out what is an easy way to get help. the easiest thing is gently grab somebody by the hand and get a hearing test. it's a medical issue. it's a simple thing to have done once we know what is going on then we can figure out what can we do about it and we c for folks. >> i'm interested to know in your professional experience the statistic is always shocking i thinkgpeople wait on average 7 years even if they have significant hearing loss to seek help. why do you think people wait? >> i think because it usually happens so gradually and you make adjustments as you go on. so, i say if that would happen over night to somebody, they would be in our office the next day ready to make that change.
9:27 am
i guess one of the things though that is often missed with hearing loss is there is so many other medical consequences to that untreated hearing loss. we have studies now that show by not treating hearing loss people are more likely to have dimension and alzheimer's early -- dementia and alzheimer's earlier on. you're not keeping your brain as stimulated as it is used to being.?? when you start out talking to somebody we start gently and say gosh i have noticed you're having trouble. there is a lot more that goes along with it other than the communication problem. getting that hearing test is really an easy kind of non-threatening way to get started. >> uh-huh. >> i think your whole gift of hearing program is so great. for so many people they can't afford hearing aids or if they have a h hearing impairment this is a really nice gift and way to introduce it to them. you have seen it a million times
9:28 am
a game changer for people when they can hear. what kinds of things do you hear from people once they are able to experience life. there usually why did i wait so long to do this. that's always the number one thing. why did i wait so long? they usually have more energy from not straining so hard and really feel like themselves again. that's the biggest thing just feeling like you're a whole person. not that hearing loss wouldn't make you that way, but think when you are missing out on anything it doesn't feel so good. there heari l a part of aging. i wonder if people are hearing this and wondering is this program the gift of hearing just for older people? >> absolutely not. we have worked with people of every age through this program. we have got young mom who is have just had babies, teachers, people that are still working, and older people. so it's really been a vast range. we really like the stories of people that are you know in the community, and are doing good. and we kind of like to pay it forward and as they can do more
9:29 am
that story. >> that's great. you have free educational programs do you to help people become aware of all options available whether it is hearing, breathing or sleep related. here's how you contact advent. here's the information for the gift of hearing program. >> that's right it has to be submitted by november 30 to advent. can you go online to make your submission it is advent.md. you can also write to advent attention the gift of hearing wauwatosa. 53222. can you find them at one of their two locations and ask about a hearing test that's often the first step in figuring out how severe the hearing loss is. they have a location in wauwatosa, a north mayfair road and mequon north port washington road. advent.md. great to see you guys thank you so much. up next if are you traveling with your pet for the holidays we're going to have help to make

from haws is jen smieja with her little pup, magnus. does he get anxious around people? >> he is anxious ought the time. he is doing a very good job of playing the role of nervous pet today. >> okay that's his part. >> he looked really calm, but i think once you know your pet you understand when they are uncomfortable or anxious right? >> exactly. those are the things you need it key into on the holidays and when you are going to be in different situations. others are not necessarily going pet out or those stress actions, but we definitely are going to know those things. >> uh-huh. >> i think it's great to communicate that. as you said, he doesn't like it when you do that or whatever it may be, think that sort of helps. what are some behaviors you can find from a dog or cat when anxious or uncomfortable. >> magnus throws out a couple stress signals or calming
9:34 am
yawning. he can be warm, but also a stress pant is a anxious elevated breathing rapid breathing so the stress pant. he was trying to hide behind jen at one point. so you know when you know your dog and you can tell they are more anxious the important rule of thumb i think is to make sure you understand whole heartedly your dog doesn't need to be friends with every guest. sometimes they are most of thible put away where the guests aren't going to go in >> especially when there are small kids coming at them right? >> yes. what about things like he has a kong there. let's start with here with the baby gate. is that good idea to use those to give them a safe place away from people. >> i think that communicates what it is. it is busy he is occupying himself with a puzzle toy or stuffed kong. it indicates to guests this is a pet only area.
9:35 am
>> look at the cat taunting the dog. >> it can separate animals from other guests dogs that are there for the holiday. >> being crated sometimes is good and having their favorite toy that keeps them occupied right? >> and also a rule of thumb for children at party the pet is in their safe spot we don't bother the pet when they are there. you can keep both the children and pet safe. >>ft or put your pet in another room they become very vocal. it is hard as a pet parent to cure that and not want to go tend to it. what do you suggest? >> that's very true. that might happen. that might realistically happen for a lot of families, but you can't be playing hostess really well at the same time you with playing pet parent. >> so it's okay to let them be vocal? >> yes and know. we want to make sure you are meeting your pets needs before
9:36 am
if they can't handle the household of guests and are going to be barking the whole time. i'm not here it say that should be ratcheted the whole day just for the sake of being put away, can they go to grandma and grandpa's? can a neighbor take them? you want to stick to that plan to benefit the animal. >> what about being tethered to someone to prevent, because i noticed that. she's got the leash in hand and it's like a safety net for her pet. >> magnus and he does really well with mom. it's like if you are going to bring your pet to the holidays or if you are the one hosting and your pet is anxious without you have to realize you have to cater to your animal if you're going to do that. it's either bring them and have this be your plan or leave them at home if it's going to be too much of a burden to have them tethered. >> little pets sometimes can get stepped on by drunk uncle. >> oh. [laughter] >> should you consider putting them away just because of size?
9:37 am
>> [laughter] >> they are both like yes. >> yes and exercise pen, a different room. >> yes. [laughter] >> all good stuff. >> there is other reasons they don't just have to be anxious it can be drunk uncle. [laughter] >> i liked her idea about exercising the dog before the festivities begin. this is a great thing to keep kids and other people occupied. take the dog for a walk or run or out to play or something. so they have that under their belt before everybody comes over. the dog. >> when everybody says walk her ears are like whoop. >> she's like yes. did you see that yes. walk. >> when is that happening? [laughter] >> yes. >> and have a plan and stick-to-it too. >> if you can communicate with all of the members of the family or even as many of the guests as possible, beforehand, to discuss who is bringing which pet, who doesn't need to bring a pet, what are we going to do if such and such happens?
9:38 am
together before we all go inside. all of this preplanning anything you can do ahead of time just to make sure everybody is on the same page as to how this is going to work out. everyone will be more relaxed. >> yeah. >> so great. >> great advice. >> right now you're having your 6th annual winter symposium january 14. in the new year which is really exciting. this symposium is an educational experience you're going to focus on alternate approaches to comp management of them. the training your keynote speaker is going to be dr. sue powell from standard process talking about the benefits of this cracks me up bone broth for your pets and people too. which he love. we have done a segment on bone broth here on the show which is great. a lot of health benefits. for details on registering you can go to haws pets .org or call the phone number on the screen. great to see you guys. there thank you. happy holidays. >> same to you. still ahead we're giving

ryan is here to help us take years off of us. >> it's a nice german name. we are talking about looking younger. obviously molly you don't need it, but -- >> oh, yeah thank you. >> i could use all of the help i could get. so that's why today, i wanted to bring in power swabs it's a really cool revolutionary new product that can help you achieve just that. >> the truth is, and i think this is amazing how people perceive someone who has a white bright smile. they look younger. and this example, this side by side isre >> look at, that is a beautiful woman there, but they did do a survey and when they talked to people they found that the, they saw the people with the whiter brighter smile and people guessed that person was up to 13 years younger, i mean like i said i could use all of the help you can get. you can see that woman on the screen, she just, not only does she look healthier, but she just looks happier when you greet somebody with that whiter, brighter smile it can really just change your day and it can change other peoples days too. >> absolutely.
9:43 am
incredible. no fillers, no injections no surgery. >> you can still get those too, but we want to start with the teeth and work your way up, go to the gym do all of those other fun things. >> a lot of people are going to say okay i like my coffee, i like my tea i like my red wine. can i still have white teeth? >> yes. i call this like a parental survival kit. you have your wine, your coffee, your chocolate. all of those things we love and we need, those things in moderation, but yes, with power swabs you can do just that. power your teeth on average of two shades in five minutes and six shades in seven days those results are going to last up to six months depending on how much wine and how much coffee with just a little bit of maintenance. >> i love that. to think that it can happen so quickly, as we take a look at these before and after pictures i think a lot of people are thinking i have to wait for a long time for results how long is it going to take? it makes sense to try something that will allow us to keep those results and something that
9:44 am
get up to six shades whiter in seven days. >> the first thing is only five minutes it's an easy process. you are going it start off with a stainout swab. it's really just a really cool product. it is a swab. you know, you just give it a little pinch you will start out with the stain out swab. it's going to lift the stains not only off your teeth. you can see the demo here for the young lady. you can see look how easy that is how gentl gentle on her teeth gentle on her gum. that process is hydrating the enamel. you're going to lift the stains off then hit it with the sweetening swab you're going to clean them up be ready for whatever comes your way. >> you mentioned it is hydrating. that's the thing that a lot of people don't like with whether trays or strips it hurts to whiten your teeth. >> it dries out your gums and it
9:45 am
getting that painful sensitivity. with power swabs there is minimal sensitivity and it takes five minutes so you can do it on the go. you ever see someone driving down the road with trays or strips, no you can't do that. with power swabs you can do it right before your meeting and you're good to go. >> we mentioned strips and trays things like that, but people wonder what makes this different. i think one of the things is that it has very minimal sensitivity. >> those other products can cost a lot of money. if you go to the dentist that is anywhere between 500 and $1,000 i have done it. and didn't even see the results i see with power swabs. so, you know it saves some bucks go with power swabs it's an easier option, you don't have to wait in the waiting room you don't have to drive t to the dentist it takes five minutes. >> what about somebody that had a tooth knocked out when they were little.
9:46 am
the other things don't work on those. >> people like us i have crowns as well. i knocked mine out when i was a kid. we should probably apologize to our parents now. sorry mom and dad. that's the great thing it will help lift the stains off the crowns and veneers any other dental work get them back to the way they looked when the dentist put them on. >> i know you travel with the quick stick that's something that is a quick boo boost in between. >> i love this. the green room i hit my teeth before i came in. it's just a great product. the stain out swab it's something you can take to work or to the gym. it's a must have it's one of the easiest things you can do to improve your appearance. >> if you call right now and mention the morning blend when you do it you can take advantage of this amazing 60% off deal, with buy two get one free special which comes with three
