9:02 am
this. instead of getting five great scarfs for five great friends, all the same getting one same friends at one store you go all over town finding and individual gift for each one to make them feel special. they call it over individualation. don't for cuss on variety with gifts focus on how much they would like it. that type of shopping when you go all over town. >> you who hang out in the same circle the same scarf. >> no, but you could get it in a different color. >> yeah. >> that wouldn't bother me at all. >> you get one in red, one in black totally different. >> if you love it they say buy it for somebody. buy a bunch and give them to everybody on your list. otherwise that type of shopping creates you spend more money, more time. >> and stress right? >> we're giving you permission
9:03 am
>> burglary. people get nervous about that this time of year. they have done their shopping. people need money. people get a little more aware of what they are leaving on their car or kitchen counter in plain sight right? >> or people have packages delivered. this i find offensive people stealing packages from other peoples front stoops. that's just, i mean, of all of the burglary and thefts that's just so wrong. i can't stand that. i find that extra offensive. >> i true you think that's a place you are tg you're trying to give people trust by getting packages delivered. >> right. this is a list how to attract a burglar don't attract these things. written in men in jail for robbery. >> you like to hear it from them. >> they say here are tipoffs to an empty house. if you leave the porch light on, but all of the window blinds are closed we know you're not home. >> i don't see that. >> a lot of people thinkly leave the garage light or porch light
9:04 am
closed you're not home. >> early morning or early afternoons are prime time. by 2:30 p.m. anyone home for lunch should be gone and most kids should be in school so 2:30 is their time. >> that is a safe time right in the middle of the afternoon. >> this one you would think is counterintuitive, but it attracts them, an nra bumper sticker signals to robbers you have guns inside and they would like to get them. >> i'm going to bumper. >> no they want that they are going to break in and try to steal your guns. these things they want you to do. >> i'm going to find a sign that says beware of vicious dog. >> that may help. they say the only deal breakers for burglars are hearing a radio or tv on, or hearing a very large breed of dog. >> yeah. >> make a recording and just play it on loop. >> that's the only deal breaker. >> vicious dogs or hearing sounds. >> tv, radio. >> i like that.
9:05 am
if anyone was home. if someone answered they pretended like they were doing a survey and leave. >> there you go your tip for the day. before we make one of my favorite holiday dishes we want to share a sweet story for our picture of the day this is a cute one. >> viewer sharon says her four grandchildren are her shining stores. in 2014 she was diagnosed with leukemia. hospital, but her spirits were lifted when they came to visit her with their smiles. they helped her through that journey and today she is a year and a half cancer free. >> fantastic story. they are beautiful. grandkids love that. if there is someone special in your life and you want to see them on tv. email their story to pictures@themorningblend.com. >> love that. first up today we're in the

9:08 am
is going to help to give it a little depth of flavor too. >> is that easy to find? >> it's easy to find if you know the right people like i do. you can get it in one pound packages with just the tail meat. >> if you didn't want that is that something you can sub? >> you can leave that out or you can use scallops. if you really wanted to do something extra special you could do lobster tail meat or soth >> we've got our shrimp. crawfish, mushrooms sizzling along there. you may have seen me add some cajun seasoning. cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, onion powder all mixed together. if you were making this at home you could leave that out if that wasn't your thing. onto that we're going to add cheese sauce. >> that looks like the hard part because getting cheese sauce to
9:09 am
have you to make a roux first. then you add heavy cream and cheese to it after you get it the consistency you want. >> shredded? >> shredded is usually the way to go. usually if you add a little american cheese because it melts so well. or if you wanted to you could use velveeta because we all know that is fantastic. why just stay away from mozzarella, prove loan little stringy. >> what did you use? >> american and cheddar. we let that come together. add a little splash of cherry sy wine. >> i want to ask you while you're doing that, if people call the restaurant right now what should they do if they want to book a bigger group. they have coworkers. they have friends and family they want to get together whether it is open dining or by the fireplace or whatever.
9:10 am

9:12 am
9:13 am
9:14 am
welcome back to the morning blend. this skincare line is called the multipurpose product. it's designed to rejuvenate and revitalize aging skin and addresses specific skin problems and areas damaged by the sun. it's a powerful organic green tea developed by a dermatologist
9:15 am
faces in her practice. >> welcome dr. anne riordan a board certified dermatologist and creator of the azfasst skincare line. >> hi ladies. >> we're both using this line now. absolutely love it. >> you guys look terrific. your skin is just glowing. >> thank you. >> you have to say that. [laughter] >> no. [laughter] >> this time of year is so crazy with hustle and bustle of the holidays and getting ready i mean who has time? >> and the change of the weather. >> that's really harsh on the great thing about the azfasst skincare line because it does have the base of the organic green tea which has so many different wonderful properties. it's an antioxidant, great for healing, helps with redness and dryness. all of our products contain that ingredient too which is just wonderful. >> yeah. when did you develop azfasst and what brought to you decide to do this instead of just run your practice? >> you know what happened, ten years ago, i had been in
9:16 am
years and so many of my patients were asking me about what to use on their skin. there are so many different complicated product is out there at the department stores, pharmacies, drug stores people didn't know what to use. i decided to put together a skincare line that was easy, effective, affordable and worked with multiple skin types. >> i'm glad you brought that up. for people with sensitive skin in particular this is just one example of something you do to specifically address sensitive >> that's exactly right that's my patient population. a lot of people go to a dermatologist because they have sensitive skin. i developed a sensitive skin facial gel which is wonderful. it does have that organic green tea product, but also has the milder acid lacktic acid which helps to exfoliate and lighten those brown spots even out your skin tone. give you a glow. and we sell that individually as well as with the gift set here
9:17 am
also, eye cream is tricky because eye cream a lot of eye creams because they are the delicate skin around the eye people get irritated easily. this is a wonderful cream because it is very rich, but it is also light. it addresses those dark circles. the crow's feet, the puffiness that people get lack of sleep around the holidays. we all know about that. >> exactly. >> what else do you think really makes this unique? >> i like it because it's easy. that's the other thing too. so many of us the rushing around so many different products out there have six, seven, eight steps. >> you can get a draw full of products. >> this is really nice because you not only have the cleanser, but you have the facial gel and the moisturizer. then you're done. then you can put your makeup on you're on your way. >> we're showing a lot of different products here. some for sensitive skin. some are multiples. the key you need to understand it's that simple. there is the cleanser, the
9:18 am
the sensitive area around the eyes. just that three steps. something else i want to address is the problem areas as we mentioned. we've got pictures before and after to demonstrate some of these specific things. so starting with sun spots something that treats those brown spots the sun damage, signs of aging that people will often see. >> and that's, this is a great example of that. this is one of my patients who is very outdoories she likes to cycle, she likes to jog. she did not like the of the brown spots she was get on her cheeks, but she also has sensitive skin. those photos are about a month apart. this is a big problem for a lot of people. these photos are only a month apart. she used the eye cream loved it what a dramatic change as can you see. >> a lost people have lip lines too. >> one of my own par patiented d
9:19 am
i said sure why not. loved it about 50% improved. there is nothing on the market for lip lines women hate that. their lipstick runs up in the lip lines. >> what about handses those show aging too. >> this is very dramatic. as far as aging our hands are on the steering wheel you get that excessive sun over time. the facial gel was placed on the backs of the hands of this woman a month later dramatic the brown spots she was thrilled. >> i love that. i always after i use it on my face i always approximate it on my hands. >> that's smart. >> a lot of times you have extra. >> then there is no waste. you can put it right on there there is no waste. >> where do people find this this is not in drug stores right? >> no you can get it online azfasst.com and we're also running a great deal. >> let's put that up.

jon batiste has mastered new ways to play old classics. with chase atms, he can master new ways to deposit checks too. easy to use chase technology
9:23 am
welcome back to the morning blend. darcy johnson is just 43-years-old. recently she got a wakeup call for severe migraines and found out she has sleep apnea which can be a dangerous condition. her doctor said she should lose 60 pounds in order to avoid using a c pap machine. today she is well on her way lost 40 pounds in two rounds with the nutrimost program. she's here along with her health coach from 855-burn-fat, jen
9:24 am
great to see you ladies. congratulations can't wait to talk about your story especially because a lot of people identify with the fact have you a very sedentary job and a long commute. we'll get to that in a second. jen first explain why you think, this is you know will surprise people. you think the holidays are great time to start this program. >> it absolutely is because think about how many times you feel out of control during the holidays. when you start doing a lifestyle modification like a program like this, you're able to get in control, you don't gain that 10 the holidays and when everybody else is talking about their new year's resolution january 1 you have already started it. >> even just not gaining would be huge for a lot of people. 20-pound guarantee is what you promised with 855-burn-fat and nutrimost. sounded great to you right doory? you sat at a desk all day. you work in the financial industry. so you really don't have a job where you are very active. >> no. sit in meetings a lot.
9:25 am
>> so two hours a day you ride in your car. >> yes. >> so talk a little bit about what happened to you. what happened at the doctor's office? >> well what i did go in for is a snoring problem. she said we're going to test you for sleep apnea and i kind of laughed and said there is no way i have it. she said let's just do the study. she said you actually have severe sleep apnea. apnea i said i don't want a c pap machine. >> that's what you broughtn >> she said in order to see a significant change have you to lose 60 pounds. that was a wakeup call. i don't want to sleep with that every night. i want to be there for my children and so, what can i do and i called jen's office and i was off and running. >> i said hey i got to do something to change. have you tried other weight loss programs? >> i have tried a lot from the shakes and the pills and the different stuff nothing ever worked because it wasn't real
9:26 am
there that's the thing jen always says it's real food and you are not taking drugs and not doing hormones. let's talk about the two rounds. we have this side by side before and after picture which i think is fantastic. this is fun for you to look at too. feeling better too which is great. 40 pounds later. two rounds explain how that worked for you. >> they do have a 20-pound guarantee first round i lost 20 i was so excited and i said i can do this. and i had the 40. >> what about the support you got from people like jen at the 855-burn-fat office? >> between jen and becky at the office, i mean i could text and call i could even email. they were just amazing. i mean becky will pick up the phone almost anytime except for when i'm driving at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. she will pick up the phone she will text me back.
9:27 am
that was a huge piece of it as well. >> how is this possible that people are able to lose this kind of weight in such a short amount of time without exercise? >> we're able to use 21st century techniques to identify what is going on with your individual body. it's a program that is made for you. it's not going to be the same cookie cutter program you get with every program you know and ten other people are doing the same thing or hundreds of people. you are actually going to have a program for you. so we're able to look at what is going on wit learn how to fix that metabolism. we identify what foods work for your body to help you to be able to be in a fat burning state and what food you are needing nutritionally. you're able to do all of these things and make your body work the way it's supposed to be instead of working like you're 30, 40 years older than what your metabolism should be. >> the education is probably key right doory? darcy. >> that was the biggest thing
9:28 am
the program too? >> i did. i talked to my friend al may who was on the show. i talked to al about it he said wow what are you doing. i told him i said have you to call becky. please call the office and he did. >> we said to al you can see this before and after we are like you lost the gut. >> he did that's the first thing i said when i saw him too. >> that's so great. >> where is your belly. >> he felt so good about the program which is awesome. great t success improved your health. lost a lot of weight and told other people about it. jen you have a christmas and new year's special right? >> i believe we do yes. we are doing we want to get people in there. don't wait until the end of the year come in now. and get started so you are able to be successful. >> that is so awesome. it's a free consultation too to the first 25 callers which is awesome that you are doing that. thank you so much. what jen is saying don't wait.
9:29 am
instead of gaining that typical 10 to 20 or even more weight. so call now because the first 25 only get that free consultation where they do the body scan, they will tell you about your metabolism. customize a plan for you. you can even get started the same day you visit them. the phone number is (414)269-5683 or go to 855-burn-fat.com. they have a beautiful new office located on west north avenue in wauwatosa. great time again to start this program. congrala >> thank you. >> it's great. thanks jen always great to see you. up next changes to medicare they can be confusing. how do you know if they apply to you? after the break what you need to do before enrollment ends next week. still ahead how a family bounced back after their son needed several brain surgeries.
9:30 am
9:31 am
9:32 am
medicare enrollment ends one week from too. you still have time. class is in session it's insurance 101 with sovereign select. listen to this. just this enrollment period alone sovereign select has saved their customers a combined $50,000. i'm here with ceo of sovereign
9:33 am
little quiz to see how up to date you are and if you need to get in to see him before the end of next week. good to see you tommy. >> they have to get in to see us. >> $50,000 you saved your customers. >> and it keeps growing. it probably is higher than that i think i gave that number last week. >> there is a list of changes we have a graphic we'll show you why it is important and where people are saving money in a little bit. we've got a little quiz right? >> you know what is interesting, most people are actually saving a lot of money on their prescrip d reviewing their prescription drug plan, i have had people that save 3, $4,000 for the year just by looking over what medications they take verses what plan they are on. >> it's interesting i was actually at the pharmacist the other day, and i saw a bunch of medications just sitting there and the pharmacist said you people left them because their plans changed and they couldn't afford the new price so they left their prescriptions. >> we change their plan over and
9:34 am
let's see how smart you are. let's start with some of these quizes. the first one is the open enrollment plan started october 15 and will end decembet wednesday, true or false? >> big time true. that's a big source of confusion. sometimes get a lot of calls in mid-december, saying oh, i know i'm late for the game i need to review my med occasion advantagr prescription drug plan and we have to let them know it's over. >> too late people can'tet late. >> unless they have some sort of special circumstance like they just moved to the area or their plan is leaving the market, but other than that if they are already on medicare, and looking to change or review their medicare advantage or prescription drug plan, decembeg right now, is really, what they need to do. >> necessary. i think it's such a weird date to remember. that's why people get confused, but that's next wednesday,
9:35 am
to actually end december 31. so people who have been on medicare for quite a while i could see how they would think, it's december 31 and the market has been really stable for many years actually already. this year, insurance companies are really shaking it up and there is brand-new plans and we're noticing that people are saving more this year than any year within the last probably ten years. >> so important to call you. medicare is question number two, medicare advantage and part prescription drug plans never change their benefits or costs from year to year it is false. >> big time false. we notice that a lot of people have a hard time with change. especially when they are on medicare. if i were retired which i'm clearly not, i would definitely want to just be like you know what everything is in place. i'm going to go have fun and enjoy my retirement.
9:36 am
they like changing the copays and deductibles and premiums and sometimes introduce brand-new plans that were never there before. what is beautiful about working with sovereign select we're always the proactive ones. so if they are in our system we're going to let them know there are things we should look at or you know, do the review automatically for them. >> yeah. and we were just taking a look at some of the changes that are important of what saves people so much money. these are changes in the medicare advantage effects the every day medicare consumer right? things like -- >> so, the premiums deductibles and copays like i mentioned the drugs they might change. that's a huge thing. there is a list of covered drugs insurance companies sell on their prescription drug or medicare advantage plans. those change every year. and that's a big reason why we're seeing people that are saving thousands of dollars every year, just by reviewing their plan and maybe making a
9:37 am
>> they might have one plan or one medication on there that hey, the insurance company is not covering next year anymore. and they might not know it unless they be proactive call sovereign select and do the review. we carry basically all of the plans on the market so we can review the plans and give an unbiased suggestion. if they are calling just a specific insurance company directly they are only going to get the plans from that insurance company. they would have to call you know all of the insurance carry all of them so they can call us one call, -- >> and get your money back hopefully. >> and get all of the plans right in one spot. >> huge broker. i want to make sure everybody has the information on the educational meetings every friday at 10:00 a.m. educational only. tomorrow december 1 at 11:00 a.m. you have group immediatings. meetings.
9:38 am
enrollment materials. no cost, but you should reserve your cost because seating is limited. make sure that you call sovereign select, there is no cost consultation, if you mention the morning blend right now, you can also get a free golf towel for your winter vacations. >> there you go. >> i for got to bring one on, but they are pretty cool. >> pretty sweet i like it. >> that meeting is the last meeting of the ope open enrollm. >>ha >> thank you. up next the rare condition that made this 8-year-old collapse on the playground at school.
9:39 am
9:40 am
9:41 am
welcome back. in january of this year, 7-year-old mj collapsed on the he was rushed to children's hospital of wisconsin where they found he had a rare condition that deprived parts of the brain from oxygen. no parent ever wants to get a call like that. we're lucky to have a world class facility like children's to provide the highest level of care. >> mj is here with us we're happy to say along with his mom and dad, we have opal and his father michael here with us on the morning blend. >> you look so cute. >> you're darking. dashing.
9:42 am
you're 8-years-old now you're in third grade? do you remember last year when you were 7 and collapsed on the playground? >> yes. >> do you remember that day can you tell me anything that happened or anything you remember? >> um, my legs felt numb and my arms and i couldn't feel it. i was like where was my arm? >> like it fell asleep? >> yeah. >> what was the first call you guys got? what >> i got the first call and at the time i was working all the way in racine so, i was just hysterical. i had just dropped him off and like about an hour or two after that i'm getting a call that my son is laying in the playground and motionless. >> yeah. >> i'm like no. it can't be real.
9:43 am
she was at the house and we were like two minutes away from the school. >> uh-huh. >> so she's like oh, my god and she just rushed right over there. >> were there other times you had had things fallen asleep like your arm or leg or is that the first time you remembered that happening? there first time. >> there were no symptoms at all. he never complained of a headache or anything abnormal. he is an active child. he does tae kwon do, swimming, and all. so we got the phone call, i got to school, and they would raise his left hand and it was just fall lifeless. i asked him to smile he would just smile on one side. the symptoms of somebody that had a stroke. the entire left side just went dead. so great response team the fire team came by and they took him they asked children's, they said
9:44 am
this was about 1:00ish, and they were going to observe to see what was going on because they weren't sure what was causing it. >> was he awake at this time? >> he was alert, but losing consciousness. that's when we knew the brain was getting you know, the doctors said we'll watch him and see if he is going to get worse and they met and they said they couldn't wait any longer by 4:30 they were whisking him up t emergency room they had to have emergency surgery done to remove well they found there was fluid blood. he had a vessel, it's avm. a malformation of the vein and arteries put together. it ruptured. so that's what caused the bleeding in the brain. it started clotting and causing the pressure to go up on the right side of the brain which controlled the left side of the brain. that's where the whole thing started happening. when they went to the emergency
9:45 am
pulled the blood that was there, -- >> causing the pressure. >> because it really created this rare disorder where it deprived part of the brain of the oxygen causing that whole side of his body to go limp. >> uh-huh. >> so, the acronym is avm. it's a very small rare condition. what i was reading it occurs in less than 1% of the population which is incredible and estimated at only 200 people may even have this. this isn't something that you would ever think of, could happen. how is he doing now? he had multiple surgeries on his brain right? >> he had the first one on the 25th and then august 8 he had another one. they removed the avm itself, that was caused the issue because they said it had potential to grow and possibly you know, rupture again so they
9:46 am
altogether, but, with a lot of work with children's team, all of the doctors therapy and everything he is way beyond you know recovery. i mean at this point. >> that's amazing. >> it's a good thing you have such good hair. >> yeah. [laughter] >> you feel good? >> yes. >> you should have seen him after his first surgery. >> we thought he was going to be swollen. >> you have cool scars? >> it always goes back he said. [laughter] >> you have really cool scars? >> dr. kaufman gave him a real good hair cut. >> yeah. i bet they had to probably shave your head. it's a good thing you have great hair. we're glad to know you are doing so well. i know the people at children's hospital of wisconsin took wonderful care of you and the experts there to be able to do brain surgery is pretty incredible. that's the place to be when somebody happens and so right
9:47 am
