have to wait in line? >> i was also wondering how you buy your meat if you go to the deli. is there someone there to slice it? >> i think they've got some employees, no checkout counters. >> so many questions. i want to start with breaking news in los angeles. an anonymous tip about an imminent terror attack that has federal and local officials ramping up security this morning. pete williams is nbc's justice correspondent, pete, what can you tell us? normally respond to threats like this to telephone threats. it was call from a pay phone in a western country, but because it came with little time to check it out, they decided to go public with it. this morning riders on the los angeles commuter rail system are urged to be vigilant. fbi and local authorities say they received an imminent, but unconfirmed threat against the subway station in universal city. officials say the threat came

line. something would happen today at the station across the street from universal studios which is owned by nbc's parent company. authorities called the threat very specific. >> because of the specificity and the imminence of the threat, we felt it was important that we provide this information to the public. >> reporter: the fbi declined to specify which country it came from, but says it was delivered in english. >> we are right now looking at the credibility of the threat. we're continuing to work this in along with our local partners here in los angeles. with our international partners who provided the initial information. >> reporter: officials are urging the public to use caution, but go about or normal day. >> i mean, there'll always just be a lingering feeling of fear, but i got to go to work. >> this could be real, it could be a hoax, but we must remain calm and vigilant. we're asking the public to take the same precautions you take on any other day. >> reporter: riders will see

undercover officers will also be on the job. the fbi is working to learn more about the source of the information. >> justice correspondent pete williams, thank you very much. also this morning, new developments in the investigation of that deadly warehouse near oakland, california. last night an emotional vigil was held for the victims. we'll talk to the man who ran that warehouse in a moment. more at the scene. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, with most of the building clear, the death toll now stands at 36 and we are told by the sheriff's department they're optimistic no more bodies will be covered. this is now a criminal investigation. many are looking for answers, but are also grieving. overnight, hundreds paying their respects. unlit candles and flashlights, a flameless symbol of solidarity for so many lives lost. many victims in the 20s and 30s.

fire quickly spread during a late night party. derick almena leased the warehouse. calling it an artist collective. >> everyone knew that we lived there. >> reporter: he and his family as well as dozens of others have lived there for the past three years. >> this is basically renting it to be a school. dance culture. visuals. that i build to suit. as is to city standard. >> reporter: but the city says this warehouse was, which fire officials say was jammed with flammable materials was never up to standard. or zoned for residential living. documents obtained by nbc news show a history of complaints for garbage piling up and illegal interior building structure. the owner has not responded to requests for comment, but her

it was leased as a studio space, not a dwelling. >> i raised my children there, yeah. >> reporter: over the years, he was forced to make improvements. installing and electrical panel and a hot water heater. he's spoken to investigators, but not been charged with any crime. so you say the building wasn't up to code, did you make modifications that maybe shouldn't have been done? >> thiss >> we can't talk about that. you can't say that kind of stuff right now. >> reporter: his partner wanted to stop our interview. mica alison. but almena wanted to go on. >> did we modify? that's the question. did we make changes? i would like to say we made improvements. >> reporter: allison says the family did the best they could.

official death toll remains a the 36. the sheriff's department tells us they are cautiously optimistic that number will not rise. the investigation going on inside the warehouse behind me is now a criminal investigation. no charges have been filed. no one faces any criminal charges a this the hour. the district attorney's office saying they are simply watching this case very closely. the man who leased this property, derick almena sat down with us late last night and talked with matt and earlier today. here's some of what he had to say. >> i'm only here to say one thing, i am incredibly sorry. and that everything that i did was to make this a stronger, more beautiful community. and to bring people together. people didn't want walk through those doors because it was a horrible place. did i know there was going to be a fire? did i remove my children from the space and get a hotel? because i wanted to avoid this? because i wanted to cast blame on other people? no, because i wanted to get a

children. >> almena's emotions ran the gamut, he also cast other blame. he also was angry. and he also was very remorseful for the lives lost. almena said he had lived here at this property for roughly three years. he started this warehouse as an artist collective and over time he tells us, other artists began to live here and pay rent. the lease here costs $5,000 a month according to almena. he says that money was raised by the 20 to 25 artists that they paid different rent. he also says while his name was the leaseholder here, that everyone shared the responsibility for collective living. that investigation still continuing here. again, matt, it's unclear if anyone will face criminal charges, matt. >> miguel, thank you so much. security has been ramped up across los angeles transit system after authorities got a tip about an imminent bombing a the a subway station there. the fbi and local law enforcement agencies say they are not taking any chances.

like a mother/son relationship with an actor you don't know that well? >> it's a great question. i was a little nervous. i didn't know this kid. i didn't know what it was going to be like. he is a phenomenal human being. he's bright, grounded, comes from the chicago area. so he hasn't done a lot of work, but he -- and mike also creates this. we did a lot of exercises. we danced together. we improvod. >> why the dancing? >> in the movie there's everyone up and sort of getting us -- it's, it's like an ice breaker. >> isn't what they tell us back in acting school. if you're willing to appear -- >> foolish. >> foolish, then it breaks down barriers. >> that's exactly right. >> does it work? >> it does work. and it somehow -- i don't know, it was just right for the movie. also mike has, mike mills, the director, he has specific ideas about music. there's a lot of music in the story. music is a part of it as well as

pepper and it will look good during the entire meal. >> i smell brownies. >> this is a very easy little hack. you make your brownies, line the pan, and then you use a business ket or cookie cutter press that in it comes out. out. and then i made a -- you can't use regular whipped cream because it'll follow apart. this is just an italian cream cheese, and then just do a dollop. do you want to do on i cut the brownies out. >> pipe a little thing on. if you have a plastic bag, that'll work too if you take the tip and add a whole strawberry to the top, rest it on there and cap it off with a little santa hat. >> that's nice. >> super easy and great -- >> strawberry and chocolate. >> so this is just a fun way to zip up a solo cup. basically red solo cups or

buckles that you can find at stationary stores. and they're usually used for wedding invitations and use like a little bit of tape and just like double stick tape and tape it on there and make a santa belt. now i'm going advice you, do not use a hot glue gun, it will melt the plast pick. >> good idea. got some wine glasses that you've made fancy for the holidays. >> well, it's more you know how you forget what drink is yours. you pick -- these are window clings, and they just cling to glas take it off, and it's great for kids too if you want to put those on and pick whichever, i think you're probably a burgundy drinker or red wine. >> red wine at this time of year. >> you stick that on and remember what your glass is. cool, very nice. >> finally we're going to make this very beautiful -- i mean this is a super festive thing to do. you basically take a bucket, like -- >> nice bucket. >> you can use two liter plastic, you know, like a soda bot physical you cut the top
