near a college campus in georgia. jody smith was a public safety officer at georgia southwestern state university. he was childhood friends and went to the police academy with officer nicholas smar who was also shot and killed in that incident. their shootings sparked a massive manhunt for the gunman. officials say that gunman apparently took his own life when authorities arrived at a home where he was hiding. the life and accomplishmen this morning. glenn died thursday at the age of 95. he became an american hero in 1962 when he became the first american to orbit the earth. he would go on to serve 24 years on capitol hill as a u.s. senator. another remarkable moment in glenn's life came in 1998 when he became the oldest man to go into space. i sat down with him and his wife, annie, shortly before that mission. >> let me just start with as
