good afternoon. thank you for joining us. i'm ian reitz. we are going to start with a weather alert. tonight will bring the coldest weather of the year so far. if you went out this morning you know layers are the best option. temperatures are headed down. freeze warnings for several areas is in effect. let's get over to meteorologist ashley batey. she is tracking these temperatures tonight. how cold are we talking?

many areas are under a freeze warning. that is going to be our areas north of tampa bay. as of right now, quite chilly. we don't expect to warm up much. even though we have lots of sun in the forecast. 53 tampa. 52 st. pete. we are still seeing a couple 40s on our maps. 45 new port richey. citrus, hernando and pasco county you are under a freeze warning from 1:00 a.m. through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. bring the plants in and bring the pets inside. take precautions as we'll see temperatures drop below 32 degrees tonight. we are expecting a warm up in the middle of the week. after that we have a round of strong thunderstorms coming up. if you thought it was cold

cold weather shelters across the bay area will be opened this evening. family ministries on washington street will open up at 6:00 for individuals. in holiday metropolitan ministry will open up tonight at 6:00 for families. boys and girls club opens between 6:00 and 6:30. these are a few shelters opened tonight. if you need to find one closer to you or if you know someone who needs a warm place to stay we have that information at wtsp.com. emergency warning that came too late for two people in duet can serve as a warning for you and your family. >> reporter: it pulls at your heart strings to look at this damage and know that a family once live here. now you can see their shoes and children's toys that are all over this field.

(beeping). >> reporter: that's the sound you should hear if severe weather is headed your way. sunday morning some people in duet did not get the alert until a tornado tore through their areas and killed two people. in places with spotty cell service the messages don't always come through. in storms the cell towers can be wiped out all together. >> we had a little one. it is better than none. we got in the closet. that's the most helpless feeling in the world. >> reporter: the best thing do is buy a weather radio. they use a digital signal and are more are liable.

phone, go into settings into notifications. scroll to the bottom. make sure that emergency alert is turned on green. that means families will get an alert when a storm is headed your way. >> you can also find out when severe weather is heading our way. we have a great source for you if you lose power. you can take your phone with you to your safe place, download our free app to your smart phone or tablet. search for wtsp in the app store. we have breaking news in st. petersburg where a pedestrian has been hit in front of st. pete city hall and 2nd avenue. the person was crossing the street when they were hit. if you are heading down in that area you'll want to avoid it for the time being. second avenue north is closed between 4th and 5th street. it was a city employee hit. that person has life- threatening injuries.

information on this story and we'll have an update when we learn more. two people are dead after a greyhound bus overturned this morning in california. this accident happened after 7:00 california time. it was on highway 101 outside of san jose. on its side. the bus driver fell asleep. at the time of the accident it slick. the supreme court is jumping in the immigration battle. the justices agreed to review the president's executive order allowing illegal immigrants to come out of the shadows to work legally in the united states. the case could be decided a month before the convention. david jolly wants his colleagues to get back to work and fundraising training. he is introducing a bill called

it would ban members of congress from directly soliciting campaign donations. he wants lawmakers to work a full-time job. >> this is about a reform that says get back to work. stop spending 30 hours of your week outside of your office asking people for money. >> 30 states including florida bans judicial canidates from personally soliciting campaign contributions. it is two weeks before the iowa caucuses. two leading canidates are taking aim at each other. craig boswell has more from washington, d.c. >> reporter: donald trump and ted cruz attack one another with each claiming the other is tainting. trump tweeting cruz is a nervous wreck. this response from cruz. >> donald.

hitting the campaign trail hard. trump making three stops in iowa. cruz has six stops in new hampshire where he is trailing trump in the polls. cruz used the granite state to open up a new line of attack on trump saying the businessman was mia during the 2013 senate debate on immigration form. >> when that fight was being fought donald was nowhere to be found. >> one of the folks said we'll build a wall. i said what? >> reporter: it is not just trump firing shots at cruz. marco rubio is taking aim at the texan accusing him of being a flip-flopper. a pact supporting marco rubio just released this ad. marco rubio is third in the polls in iowa and new hampshire. craig boswell cbs news washington.

the music world suffered another big loss. glen frey died yesterday at the age of 67. >> you can't hide your lying eyes. >> he cofounded the eagles albums. he wrote or cowrote hotel california and sang the lead on lying eyes, take it easy and he died from arthritis and pneumonia. in this season of cold, coughs and sore throats new recommendations are reminding doctors to cut down on prescribing antibiotics.

overnight. we'll see a lot of subfreezing counties. we may see a couple upper 20s. >> that is pretty chilly. >> absolutely. make sure you are taking all the precautions. sensitive plants. tonight will be the night they'll be struggling more. we have a lot of high cloud cover. it is not super thick. a lot of the sunshine is getting through. but this is going to clear out overnight. that really does allow for the really cold temperatures overnight tonight before we do start a warm up as we head toward the middle and end of the week. 53 tampa. 58 apollo beach. 57 sarasota. overnight we'll see wide-spread 30s and upper 20s in the nature coast. we have citrus county, hernando county and parts of pasco east of highway 19, you are under a

effect at 1:00 a.m. and it will expire at 9:00 a.m. those temperatures will be dropping quickly as soon as we lose the sunset. we go from mid to upper 50s this afternoon. we lose that sun and then those temperatures just drop. it will be around 40 degrees tonight around the bay area. as soon as you get east of i-75 you'll notice the numbers coming down. still seeing a northeast breeze. the chilly temperatures heading out the door tomorrow morning around 40 degrees. it is going to be a cold one. from there we'll be able to warm up more. because of the lack of cloud cover and because of the lighter winds, we'll see those temperatures recovering in the 60s beginning tomorrow. through the overnight hours here we go. we get chilly, chilly temperatures. clear and cold heading home from the lightning game tonight. you'll be in the chilly arena and it will factor into the outdoors, as well.

-- handy. it will be cold tonight. we are tracking a storm system that is bringing cool air behind it ahead of the warm up. it is bringing in a threat of stronger storms. that does not look like it will be a wide-spread severe weather event. we'll see a couple storms bringing gusty winds as well as heavy rain with it. be on the look out for that. we are going to see the biggest threat with that is heavy rain and lightning. then some strong, gusty winds. that hail threat and tornado threat is very low this time around. here's what you can expect. upper 30s around the bay area tonight. we'll see 60s in the mix tomorrow. then as we head into thursday it is a picture perfect day. temperatures in the 70s. then we see the storm followed by the cooler air moving in for the weekend. you can get the forecast any time. download other 10 news app. it could have been one of
